Video: Japanese Pig Rodeo
And now for a pig rodeo!
(I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan, and really love the country and the people. However, no one can deny that in some ways, the Japanese are a little … odd. And I mean that as a compliment.)

Went to a rodeo just last Saturday, saw little children ride bucking mutton...I'm not kidding (no pun intended).
They called 'em mutton busters. The winner was a girl who kept holding on past the buzzer and rode the sheep 1/4 way 'round the ring.
Both of the boy contestants chickened out.

I know that the Japanese have a reputation for being obsessed with cleanliness, but couldn't they grease up the pigs just a LITTLE, to make it more sporting?
(That way they could even get rodeo sponsorship from detergent companies: "Observe how Mr. Sparkle with Color-Safe Bleach thoroughly cleans this soiled buronko-basteru rodeo shirt, sending pig bowel movements AND axle grease to the land of wind and ghosts!")

The real war on science is that being waged by the AGW religious zealots, hucksters and profiteers in thir attempt to silence dissent, pretend it doesn't existor (like you) "discredit" (i.e. slander) the many, many dedicated and often cases eminent scientists who are not buying the AGW scam.
Now, how does one even hope to reason with someone like that?

Half time report...I'm going on the record right now...The defense of the Giants are not only...Really big guys...They are faster than f*ck...I am stunned folks...6 weeks from now and everybody can't beleive how good NY is..Remember this...They are big and faster than hell...jeez..
The speed on the offensive side is amazing...The Giant backfield is fast and punishing...But crap the line is big and really fast..It's early in the season...But so far...Don't bet against the Giants...Just let it ride for a month or so. They are really athletic...

1. My gas-guzzling clunker is not on the approved CFC trade-in list.
2. I could not afford to buy a new car even with the $4500 CFC rebate.

I guess when you have 500 people standing at an intersection and not one of them dares step onto the roadway until the light gives them the OK to do so, that some smothered angst has to be let loose in other ways. Hence, pig rodeo, and well, we won't get into some of the more truly *ahem* sexual stuff involving human waste and such.

Well a start might be not putting scare quotes around save the planet. A little more might be getting real about the situation. You want to do something cheap and efficient, how about buying more energy efficient lights and turning them off when not using them?
Here's another one, how about you buy less crap from Chinese sweat Shops?
Here's a third, how about getting really educated about AGW, enough that you could make a sound scientific argument for why the Cap and Trade bill won't do the right things - and suggest something better to your congress-critters like going nuclear and deploying better batteries so that we could have more solar power?

I lived there for 5 years total - it takes a while to get your mind around the country and the people. It was very enlightening, but there are many times where I just couldn't figure out the reason for certain things.
One thing I remember was a promotion in the A&W Restaurants that had someone singing, "Hello! Tokyo girl!" repeatedly, only changing the musical style every now and then.
Then there was the Shakey's Pizza with toppings such as - potatoes, tuna, squid, corn - you name any ingredient that doesn't fit with pizza, it was there.
Another restaurant had a menu in English with a featured special - "Fresh Canadian Horse".

Really? mmm...Cato?
In respect to their ladylike used of the f-bomb, yes. But gentile Alouette has far to go before she dare compare herself to mannerly Mindy.

Speaking of pig rodeos... It is posts like this that cause me to get snippy.
I had said...
"We actually care about bigger issues like preventing an ecological catastrophe that will kill millions of people."
To which I got...
Now, how does one even hope to reason with someone like that?
You can't. You're a Luddite? You call for more nuclear power generation. You call for more technology to address our energy requirements ongoing. You accept the fact that extractive industries must, by definition, at some point have nothing to extract.
You are sage, they are fools.
You are being batted around because you believe in science.

I'll have the personal squid and octopus pizza, red sauce, please, with extra potatos. (With apologies to Dan Quayle)

I don't know that movie, but all I can say is that Japanese culture, in an outsider's eye, is so exuberantly other I can only say - hmm. I love it.

"..no one can deny that in some ways, the Japanese are a little ... odd."
Whoa..no kidding - have you seen the one where a whole bunch of Japanese ride a huge log down a hill?

In one of my first trips to the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, the neighborhood I ended up living in for three years, I asked a waitress which part of the Tuna I was eating since it was so chewy and bloody tasting. "The raw horse jaw part," she answered.

Charles,
I, too, have spent a lot of time in Japan. I've gone on average twice a year for the last 9 years, at least two to three weeks at a whack per visit.
I love Tsukigi, onsens, isukiya, Shinjuki, Roppongi and a host of other places and things. I have to say even though I'm comfortable making my way around, I do scratch my head at least once per trip. Yes, the Japanese are odd, in a good way.
