Boehner told reporters that the president has not invited House GOP leaders to the White House for meetings on healthcare reform since the end of April.
Earlier this year, GOP leaders sent a letter to the president in May stating that they would like to work with the administration to find “common ground” on healthcare reform.
But the administration responded with a tersely worded letter indicating that they had healthcare reform under control.

“The issue with the public option is not whether you’d be required to give up your plan but whether private employers would dump their plans and private insurers would be driven from the marketplace, thereby herding the vast majority of us into a public plan. Also, the House plan itself makes clear what constitutes “coverage,” and if your plan doesn’t meet those requirements, you or your employer on your behalf will have to switch your plan. In short, this is hugely dishonest.”

There are several 2008 predictions on US and European medical tourism that still get repeated at conferences and in articles, without the speaker or writer bothering to find out the true current situation. The big prediction last year from Deloitte was that it expected 6 million US outbound medical tourists by 2010. Paul Keckley, director of Deloitte Center for Health Solutions recently drastically revised that projection to 1.6 million people. That compares to the estimated 750,000 Americans who travelled abroad in 2007 for treatment. The far higher predictions for 2012 and 2015 have been scrapped as healthcare reform and domestic medical tourism make it virtually impossible to make accurate predictions that far ahead.

And you believe that?
366 | lawhawk Wed, Sep 9, 2009 5:32:50pm |
First, if you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, Medicare, Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have. Let me repeat this: nothing in our plan requires you to change what you have. What this plan will do is to make the insurance you have work better for you. Under this plan, it will be against the law for insurance companies to deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition. As soon as I sign this bill, it will be against the law for insurance companies to drop your coverage when you get sick or water it down when you need it most. They will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or a lifetime. We will place a limit on how much you can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses, because in the United States of America, no one should go broke because they get sick. And insurance companies will be required to cover, with no extra charge, routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms and colonoscopies – because there’s no reason we shouldn’t be catching diseases like breast cancer and colon cancer before they get worse. That makes sense, it saves money, and it saves lives.
That’s what Americans who have health insurance can expect from this plan – more security and stability.
Now, if you’re one of the tens of millions of Americans who don’t currently have health insurance, the second part of this plan will finally offer you quality, affordable choices. If you lose your job or change your job, you will be able to get coverage. If you strike out on your own and start a small business, you will be able to get coverage. We will do this by creating a new insurance exchange – a marketplace where individuals and small businesses will be able to shop for health insurance at competitive prices. Insurance companies will have an incentive to participate in this exchange because it lets them compete for millions of new customers. As one big group, these customers will have greater leverage to bargain with the insurance companies for better prices and quality coverage. This is how large companies and government employees get affordable insurance. It’s how everyone in this Congress gets affordable insurance. And it’s time to give every American the same opportunity that we’ve given ourselves.
Arbitrary caps will be a thing of the past? How does that save costs?
No one should go broke because they get sick. Great. Who’s going to pay for that?
Preventative care isn’t going to save money as several studies have shown. If you have unfettered access to health care, you’re more likely to use it, meaning that the overall cost will go up, even if your own costs might go down (counterintuitive, I know).

“If you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who have insurance … nothing in this plan will require you to change what you have.”
In this plan? Which plan would that be? Obama’s plan? Baucus’ plan? HR3200? I’m curious, because the HR3200 did have a phase out plan that shifted people from nonqualified plans into the government proposal when those plans are reevaluated.
Moreover, he’s admitting that there are hundreds of millions who already have insurance. Again, if this is a crisis (and we have 300 million in the country), how and why exactly are we going to pursue a plan that provides such wholesale changes to health care delivery to increase coverage to a few million (out of the hundreds of millions that have care - his words, not mine).

It’s a market based solution that demands actual responsibility to do what is right.

Every independent and Dem in America just laughed at the GOP.

No, people do it for treatment of real medical problems too.
People do medical tourism within the US too. They go to NYC to Memorial Sloan Kettering for cancer care or Johns Hopkins or Mayo Clinic, or any number of major medical centers around the country that provide better care than they might receive back home - even if the care back home is top-notch.

People do medical tourism within the US too. They go to NYC to Memorial Sloan Kettering for cancer care or Johns Hopkins or Mayo Clinic, or any number of major medical centers around the country that provide better care than they might receive back home - even if the care back home is top-notch.
After all, Sen. Kennedy went to NC to go seek medical attention there, rather than Mass. Gen, which is one of the top hospitals in Mass.
True, but people are not going to Central America for dental care because of the innovative treatment available there.

Charles,
Your improvements on the site over the past several months have paid off. This thread and all the activity would have locked up earlier this year. Nice job, it’s smoking fast.
I remember the days when the server would have crashed in the first five minutes of the speech.
It took a lot of time and money, but things are really working better now.

This is a hail Mary speech for Obama. He was on the ropes, I suspect that this will succeed in getting him off.
He’s moved to the middle rhetorically - will still winking at the far left. Obama is a master at rhetorical jump rope.
How many times did Obama say “public option” in his last speech? - many.
How many times has Obama said “public option” this speech? - zero.

re: #792 LudwigVanQuixote
And he just talked about having actual doctors look into cleaning it up.
Actual doctors don’t need to clean it up - law enforcement putting away the doctors and others who are defrauding taxpayers to the tune of billions is what’s needed. Miami has Medicaid fraud to the tune of $1 billion a year. AG Cuomo in NY has found hundreds of millions in fraud in just the past few months.
Improving reimbursements to doctors would help keep doctors in the Medicare/Medicaid system. Better accounting and audit procedures would limit the fraud and waste. Those don’t take doctors.
Also, if you’re increasing the number of people utilizing health care professionals, that means you need more doctors to provide that care, unless you want to cut the amount of time that those professionals spend per patient. I’m not sure that you want that situation…

Except that he is not a tyrant. He is so very clearly not one. I may not agree with all he says, but he is not some evil monster like the jacket.
Come on, Obama wants to do something good for people - it may or may not come out right, and his ideas may or may not be the best, I don’t know, I need to see and think about the actual bill, but call him a tyrant for wanting social justice and fair health care?
I agree, he is not a tyrant, but I can also see that the permanently paranoid are seeing parallels. I think the fear of the whacko’s (right, left and jihadis) is our greatest threat right now.
I do have to disagree that he wants to do something “good for people”. I think he is a politician and wants to do good for himself—he wants a flame burning over his grave at Arlington and monuments built to his memory. I have issues with any politician wants to “provide” or “give” me anything. I want government to get out the way and let me make my own way.
I have no great objections to Obama that I dont’ have to any politician of any party.

THis is one of the reason I think individuals should be responsible. A 300M payer system, not a single payer system. Less hands in the pie —let individuals negotiate for their heatlh insurance, submit their own claims, we will have a lot less corruption — and better paper trails for the corrution that does happen. IMHO

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Thomas Jefferson.
That’s a quote that’s been tossed around the last 2 months - What Thomas Jefferson was referring to was an actual tree in a Boston commons before the Revolution began. It was a place that American patriots against the English would meet out in the open. People could chat under the shade of the tree about their plans for the next protest, etc., without being noticed. These patriots were Samuel Adams and over 300 others who moved the country forward towards revolution…The Sons of Liberty. The point is: be brave enough to stand up for what is right, even if it was risky. I think the quote has been misunderstood recently.
