OT, but has there been a significant increase in earthquake activity around the Pacific ring of fire, or is it just the news coverage thereof that has increased. Just saw an alert on a modest 6.1 quake in Taiwan.

Absolutely brilliant.

Nobody does satire and parodies American life like The Onion. Even Jon Stewart pales in comparison. =)

Nice generalization/ slur, even if it’s not true. If every college kid who has a fake ID and gets nailed trying to buy a margarita for their friends at a bar is a drunk,
we’re way worse off than Russia.

I agree for the most part. But a lot of people like him and say otherwise. He has done some really funny stuff, though. Then again, I only watch him when people post clips. =)

What I was referring to, though, was that brand of satire on TV as news. There aren’t that many that do it. Colbert, Stewart, and The Onion are the only few that come to mind. The Onion is definitely the best. Colbert has his moments. Stewart a bit less, but he does get it right from time to time. =)

Okay, I was young too. But my dad was not the president of the US. I know they were young but even then they should have realized their father was not Joe Average. Every (mis-)step they made was bound to be fudder for the press.

Yea, I read in a long article about their new “TV Casting” that they require everyone to read it as if it were real news. I emailed Bobbi Battista about it when she first was on and she told me what a blast it was and she will do as many as they want her to do. =)

SNL does it sometimes, but that isn’t their core activity. Agree with you that the other examples you give are more or less fake “newscasts” . And sometimes, or many times (differs from which perspective you watch) they make more sense than the mainstream media.

Colbert is way better than Stewart, but still too partisan.

Hitchens has an interesting take on these guys (doesn’t mention Onion), even though I think he infairly lumps Colbert together with Stewart.

On this topic, I do wonder just how wretchedly miserable everybody in this country seems to think everybody else is? I notice that folk will tell you all’s well with them and theirs, and then go on to say that everybody else, though, is having a hard time of it. maybe it’s a cheap form of superiority disguised as concern for others.

Then you weren’t that drunk. I recall the time, at a party, where I just sorta crumpled. Folk helped themselves to my Dunhills, and one thoughtful passerby loosened my tie a bit, but I was left alone until some pre-med kids came by.

“Dude! he’s cold!” (checks my pulse in the wrong frigging place) “Dude! He’s dead!”

One takes my hands, one takes my feet, and they were carrying me out to the back stairs, to deposit me in the snowbank outside before one of my friends noticed me missing and intervened.

re: #41 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

I would wager there are a lot of people who avoid public office for just that reason.

I saw a news story the other day - the President and Mrs. Obama had a photo taken with Spain’s Prime Minister Zapatero and his family, and published it.

Apparently in Spain, photos of the children are never published. There was a bit of an “oops” moment, and a bit of snickering, when it was noticed that the Prime Minister’s two daughters were clothed and made up in a most unattractive “goth” style.

As far as I’m concerrned - how the Prime Minister and his wife raise their kids is their business, and if they are allowing their kids the luxury of taking part in whatever style is “in” right now, then I don’t understand what the big deal is. It’s got to be hard as heck to be the private family of a public person.

OT: My Life This Weekend

My wife went with the MIL down to San Diego to visit a cousin for the weekend.

Great for me, because I have some cues I need to finish for a Sunday night review so I can work undisturbed… that is except for my two little girls (chihuahua and Toy Manchester) who are no problem at all.

Mother-in-Law gets here last night. Turns out she brings her male min-pin (Mr. Burns) with her. Wants to know if I can watch the dog until her son picks him up this afternoon. What do you say, he’s already here, right? So..yeah…fine.

Wife and MIL leave early this morning. Dogs are out at 7:00 and 11:00. I’m chugging along… things are going great - but I’m getting tired so I decided to take an hour-long nap. Phone rings about an hour. Son is on his way up from Long Beach to pick up Mr. Burns - will be here in an hour or so. I get up, go to use the restroom, and Mr. Burns is spreading diarrhea all around the bathroom floor. Every piece of carpet, mat, has something on it. I’m a little annoyed. Clean up what I can and gingerly take an armful down the hall to the washer/dryer in our building. Come back and…no Mr. Burns. I’m legally blind and miss a lot of things, so he must have snuck out the door somehow.

I find him at the far end of the building around a couple of corners. People are ticked. Turns out he’s pissed little squirts on everyone’s door. Back to get cleaning stuff. I go door to door cleaning. Finish up and get back to the washer and move the stuff to the dryer. Son-in-law is here and takes the dog. I’m thinking thank God that’s over. Go to use the bathroom and he left a new pee puddle on the bathroom floor. Clean that up and go to the bedroom to change my shirt. Piles of Mr. Burns diarrhea in the bedroom. Parting gifts, I guess.

It never ends. Ever have one of those days?

Oh, sorry!
Yes, I’ve had several of those days.
Usually, it would start as soon as I got up at 5 a.m. and would be faced with a scenario like the one you described. Before having to leave for school carpool and then work.

You’re not alone. Some days are just not worth getting up for.

Did you put a little oil in the pan, melt down a tablet of Abuelita’s chocolate, then dump in the mole itself to saute, thinned a bit with chicken stock? Right outta the jar, it’s all nasty stuff. Think of it like jarred pasta sauce - it’s just a base.

OT, but has there been a significant increase in earthquake activity around the Pacific ring of fire, or is it just the news coverage thereof that has increased. Just saw an alert on a modest 6.1 quake in Taiwan.

Scientists Say Oldest Human Ancestor Had Sex With Intern

Just days after discovering a skeleton that belonged to the oldest human ancestor, paleoanthropologists say they now believe that this early human had the first recorded affair with an intern.

“This is an amazing discovery,” said Professor Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota. “It suggests that having sex with interns goes back a lot further than any of us thought.”

I am assigned to engage the services of Dr. Benway for Islam, Inc.

Dr. Benway had been called in as advisor to the Freeland Republic, a place given over to free love and continual bathing. The citizens are well adjusted, co-operative, honest, tolerant and above all clean. But the invoking of Benway indicates all is not well behind that hygienic facade: Benway is a manipulator and coordinator of symbol systems, an expert on all phases of interrogation, brainwashing, and control. I have not seen Benway since his precipitate departure from Annexia, where his assignment had been T.D. — Total Demoralization. Benway’s first act was to abolish concentration camps, mass arrest, and, except under certain limited and special circumstances, the use of torture.

“I deplore brutality,” he said. “It’s not efficient. On the other hand, prolonged mistreatment, short of physical violence, gives rise, when skillfully applied, to anxiety and a feeling of special guilt. A few rules or rather guiding principles are to be borne in mind. The subject must not realize that the mistreatment is a deliberate attack of an anti-human enemy on his personal identity. He must be made to feel that he deserves any treatment he receives because there is something (never specified) horribly wrong with him. The naked need of the control addicts must be decently covered by an arbitrary and intricate bureaucracy so that the subject cannot contact his enemy direct.”

Every citizen of Annexia was required to apply for and carry on his person at all times a whole portfolio of documents. Citizens were subject to be stopped in the street at any time; and the Examiner, who might be in plain clothes, often in a bathing suit or pyjamas, sometimes sometimes stark naked except for a badge pinned to his left nipple, after checking each paper would stamp it. […CUT…]
Documents issued in vanishing ink faded into old pawn tickets. New documents were constantly required. The citizens rushed from one bureau to another in a frenzied attempt to meet impossible deadlines.
All benches were removed from the city, all fountains turned off, all flowers and trees destroyed. Huge electric buzzers on top of every apartment house (everyone lived in apartments) rang the quarter hour. Often the vibrations would throw people out of bed. Searchlights played over the town all night (no one was permitted to use curtains, shutters or blinds). […CUT…]
After a few months of this the citizens cowered in corners like neurotic cats.

I don’t agree with everything he says, but I have to admit, the more I get to know Whole Foods’ CEO John Mackey, the more I like him:

I ask Mr. Mackey why he doesn’t collect a paycheck. “I’m an owner. I have the exact same motivation any shareholder would have in the Whole Foods Market because I’m not drawing a salary from the company. How much money does anybody need?” More to the point, he says, “If the business prospers, I prosper. If the business struggles, I struggle. It’s good for morale.” He hastens to add that “I’m not saying anybody else should do what I do.”

[Link: online.wsj.com…]

He took a lot of shit for his medical care op-ed, and yet, he stuck to his guns. Good for him. And he’s right; health savings accounts work well and are a wonderful tool for reforming what’s wrong with our medical care system (which, notwithstanding claims to the contrary, isn’t a “crisis”).

Ah! Came from an orchestrated Rolling Stones record (I think George Martin or Andrew Oldham produced it, though I could be mistaken). “The Last Time” I think?

Yes - I was wrong about the string melody though, apprantly that was Ashcrofts - buliding on the chord progression from the Rolling Stones song you mentioned:

Song credits

Although the song’s lyrics were written by Verve vocalist Richard Ashcroft, it has been credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger after charges by the original copyright owners that the song was plagiarized from the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of The Rolling Stones’ 1965 song “The Last Time”.

Originally, The Verve had negotiated a licence to use a sample from the Oldham recording, but it was successfully argued that the Verve had used ‘too much’ of the sample.[5] Despite having original lyrics, the music of “Bitter Sweet Symphony” is partially based on the Oldham track (the song uses the sample as its foundation and builds layers upon it, though the prominent violin melody is Ashcroft’s creation),[citation needed] which led to a lawsuit with ABKCO Records, Allen Klein’s company that owns the rights to the Rolling Stones material of the 1960s. The matter was eventually settled, with copyright of the song reverting to ABKCO and songwriting credits to Jagger and Richards.

“We were told it was going to be a 50/50 split, and then they saw how well the record was doing,” says band member Simon Jones. “They rung up and said ‘we want 100 per cent or take it out of the shops’, you don’t have much choice.”[6]

After losing the composer credits to the song, Richard Ashcroft commented, “This is the best song Jagger and Richards have written in 20 years.”[7]

Wow. I never knew that. I figured it had to be that melody. And they got songwriting credit for backing strings? Well played, Allen Klein. your reputation was well deserved.

re: #50 reine.de.tout

Very true. Think how hard it would have been if Chelsea Clinton had decided to go goth, or punk, or something. I think it’s going to be very hard for Sasha and Malia, especially if their dad serves a second term. All it’s going to take is Malia trying to look a little bit hip-hop in her teens, and there’s going to be a mad feeding frenzy.

Luckily, the Obamas are doing pretty good keeping the kids out of the way, but boy, I would not want my teen years in the public eye.

Not sure that such an individual could be a great leader. Who among our great leaders ranked high on family life?

Washington?

‘Debutaunt’ apologized to me for her behavior in that thread.

But I do think it might be a good idea to also apologize to the people you were fighting with, that caused you to be banned, Debutaunt. Just to clear the air.

I agree Charles. Is this the proper place to do it?

I would like to address an issue that came up late last Saturday afternoon. A number of lizards were offended and angered by what they saw as my laughter at and seeming agreement with what another lizard said. I refer to a now banned lizard who wrote with a humorous, heavy Russian accent. I came into a thread without knowing what had preceded and I laughed at the way this lizard said things and didn’t even notice what he was talking about. I laughed and shut down my computer to have dinner and enjoy the evening.

On the next day I was unable to log in and discovered my account had been blocked. I looked back to see that had happened and discovered that I had been accused of agreeing and laughing about the idea of shooting other lizards. This just isn’t true. I laughed at the way he said things. I’m sorry that people believed I would agree to anything like that and want everyone to know I never would do that. I regret any troll-like comments I have made. Please accept my apology.
