+1 for creativity, even if it is a bit out there. Her less-than-stellar record is definitely going to bite her on the backside, but whoever she hired for PR is a flippin' genius.

Aside from the uniquely bizarre imagery, there is the underlying appeal: we replace this fellow with a non-politician whose only track record is in the private sector, generating profit for herself and her clientele.

If she can sell that as the better alternative, more power to her.

The 'furry' vote may be pretty big in California. I didn't even know there was such a thing as those people until I saw a CSI episode about them killing each other at a furry convention. Is the word 'pervert' still allowed for furries?

Okay innovative images. Points for that, and a blunt view. Points for that.

But wait. Hmm. Lets see if I understood...Tom Campbell makes the budget? That directorship is not an oversight role but a actual spending role? Not the Legislature?!... not existing law that mandates mammoth education spending, fixed benefit pensions for state workers? And facing red ink to the horizon caved on taxes and revenue increases.

Anyone remember Bush 42 and the tax increase coupled with spending limits? The later surplus was strictly a coincidence. Really.

Hey, wasn't Carly part of McCain's campaign and helped crap out HP? Yeah, great credentials there.

This video? Too weird by half for me...

Yeah, Carly was the one responsible for the HP/Compaq trainwreck, and was one of the biggest proponents of outsourcing technology jobs overseas (primarily to India), which alienated her from a huge number of professionals in the IT sector.

Very few people on the planet have taken a formerly successful company and run it into the ground the way she did. She's in elite company. C Michael Armstrong at AT&T and Al Dunlap at Sunbeam come to mind... along with the folks at Chrysler and GM who have overseen their corporate disintegrations...

But not just once - DEC
Not just twice - COMPAQ
But three times - HP - a corporate destroyer.

And the time at Lucent wasn't exactly stellar either.

She is absolute disaster for any company she touches.

Next in Line for a Bailout: Social Security

Don't look now. But even as the bank bailout is winding down, another huge bailout is starting, this time for the Social Security system.

A report from the Congressional Budget Office shows that for the first time in 25 years, Social Security is taking in less in taxes than it is spending on benefits.

up or down investor confidence is always the cause.

Hi brooklyred! I agree. And investor confidence is usually caused by uncertainty. Unexpected unemployment numbers, news about the Social Security status, legislation status (think health and cap-and-trade), the proposed budget (along with the attending shortfalls and discussions on raising the debt ceiling), the debt itself. along with other factors too numerous to cite here. When the market is uncertain, confidence drops, and we see things like what's happening today.

California's taxophobia is what put it in the mire. Not taxes; the pathological aversion to them. The refusal to pay for the services you demand.

Americans in general want everything taxes can provide except when it comes time to pay them.

The decline and fall of my old empire took centuries. I didn't live to enjoy or bewail the outcome.

Something tells me this time I'm going to get to see it all for myself.

251 Stanghazi  Thu, Feb 4, 2010 1:06:19pm
A new Rasmussen poll supplies a very interesting data point in the ongoing debate about the budget deficit: As it turns out, Republican voters would prefer having a deficit if it meant they can get more tax cuts, instead of raising taxes in order to balance the budget.

Another Rasmussen number finds that only a very small minority knew the correct answer to this one: "Is the following statement true or false? Most federal spending is spent on only three programs--Social Security, Medicare and national defense." The correct answer is "True," but only 35% answered that way, with a 44% plurality saying false.

"These figures highlight a massive failure of leadership from both Republicans and Democrats among the nation's political elite," Scott Rasmussen wrote in the analysis. "Given the amount of political chatter about the budget in recent years, it is almost beyond comprehension that neither party has seen fit to highlight the basics so that the American people can make reasoned choices on the fundamental issues before them."

It appears that we're going to be spending even more:

House Votes to Hike Debt Limit

This increase is needed now, to cover existing programs! We've got to get this under control. As everyone here knows, government can only raise the funds to cover this increase three ways:

Tax
Borrow
Print

None of these options are good options in a sagging economy.

If we can't somehow address spending - brutally if need be - we're done.

Pelosi Party Planes?

According to the documents, which we obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the Speaker’s military travel cost the Air Force $2,100,744.59 over a two-year period — $101,429.14 for in-flight expenses, including food and alcohol. (Lots and lots of alcohol.)

Speaker Pelosi used Air Force aircraft to travel back to her district at an average cost of $28,210.51 per flight. The average cost of an international congressional delegation (CODEL) is $228,563.33. Of the 103 Pelosi-led CODELs, 31 trips included members of the House Speaker’s family.

One CODEL traveling from Washington, D.C. through Tel Aviv, Israel to Baghdad, Iraq from May 15-20, 2008, “to discuss matters of mutual concern with government leaders” included members of Congress and their spouses and cost $17,931 per hour in aircraft alone. Purchases for the CODEL included: Johnny Walker Red scotch, Grey Goose vodka, E&J brandy, Bailey’s Irish Crème, Maker’s Mark whiskey, Courvoisier cognac, Bacardi Light rum, Jim Beam whiskey, Beefeater gin, Dewars scotch, Bombay Sapphire gin, Jack Daniels whiskey, Corona beer and several bottles of wine.

According to a “Memo for Record” from a CODEL March 29 – April 7, 2007, that involved a stop in Israel, “CODEL could only bring Kosher items into the Hotel. Kosher alcohol for mixing beverages in the Delegation room was purchased on the local economy i.e. Bourbon, Whiskey, Scotch, Vodka, Gin, Triple Sec, Tequila, etc.”

The Department of Defense advanced a CODEL of 56 members of Congress and staff $60,000 to travel to Louisiana and Mississippi July 19-22, 2008, to “view flood relief advances from Hurricane Katrina.” The three-day trip cost the U.S. Air Force $65,505.46, exceeding authorized funding by $5,505.46.

Bosom bombers: Women have explosive breast implants

Agents for Britain's MI5 intelligence service have discovered that Muslim doctors trained at some of Britain's leading teaching hospitals have returned to their own countries to fit surgical implants filled with explosives, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

Women suicide bombers recruited by al-Qaida are known to have had the explosives inserted in their breasts under techniques similar to breast enhancing surgery. The lethal explosives – usually PETN (pentaerythritol Tetrabitrate) – are inserted during the operation inside the plastic shapes. The breast is then sewn up.

Similar surgery has been performed on male suicide bombers. In their cases, the explosives are inserted in the appendix area or in a buttock.

U.S. stock market pummeled by credit issues overseas

"Manufacturing orders in Germany were much weaker than expected, and that has shaken the market up, so it's not just the fiscal situation with Club Mediterranean countries in the Euro zone," said John Brady, senior vice president in the interest-rate products group at MF Global.

Investors already worried about the large deficits in countries including Portugal, Italy, Spain and Greece are now worried that "global economies may not see the V-shape recovery that we have witnessed in the global equity markets," Brady said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was lately off 228.99 points, or 2.2%, at 10,041.56, with aluminum giant Alcoa Inc. /quotes/comstock/13*!aa/quotes/nls/aa (AA 12.91, -0.58, -4.30%) weighing the most on the blue chips, late off 4%.

Hmmm....
Loan repurchases are a $10 billion problem for big banks

just when they thought the worst of the mortgage crisis was behind them, billions of dollars in bad loans from the debacle may be rising from the dead and creeping back on the balance sheets of the largest U.S. banks.
....
The trend is also pitting big lenders, insurers and mortgage-finance institutions against each other. That's a big change from the previous decade, when they worked together to fuel the housing boom by originating, insuring and securitizing mortgages in record amounts.

Christopher Whalen, managing director of research firm Institutional Risk Analytics, offered up a colorful metaphor for the unfolding situation.

"The wave of loan repurchase demands on securitization sponsors is the next area of fun in the zombie dance party, namely the part where different zombies start to eat each other," Whalen wrote in a note to clients Tuesday.

That doesn't sound good.

Wrong. Do you know what the prop system did to the legislature's ability to govern? How much of the budget is required to go to this and that, chosen by the people in a bare 50% +1 vote and then unable to be overridden? Try balancing your checkbook when the neighbors get to decide what 1/3 of your money goes to.

Which part of the CA budget would you cut? We already know what the governor pushed through - cuts to education and medicine, but a nice hard line on prisons and non-violent offenders - it's more important to keep pot smokers in jail than provide aid to the sick and elderly. Argh.

Seized North Korea arms cache still a mystery
Los Angeles Times 02/04/2010
Author: Mark Magnier
Copyright 2010 The Los Angeles Times

"Nearly two months after the seizure here of a charter plane carrying 35 tons of weapons shipped from North Korea, the mystery remains as to where the rockets and other armaments were headed."

"North Korean sales of missiles, missile parts and other arms to countries such as Iran, Syria and Myanmar are believed to contribute hundreds of millions of dollars annually to Pyongyang's hard-currency earnings. While the sale of such relatively routine weapons would normally not be illegal, in this case it violates the ban imposed under a U.N. resolution of June 2009 designed to punish North Korea after it fired a long-range missile and mounted a second nuclear test."

Half of the 1.3 trillion was the bailout, so including it in the figure is marginally sensible at best since it's not "annual spending" as Obama implies. Of that half, half again wasn't used. Furries largely vote along party lines, rather than for the politician with the best animal costume themed ad.

And the CSI episode wasn't all that realistic.

I dunno. Do you call foot fetishists perverts? It's just a fetish. Harmless one. We may have more furries in CA than in some places, but they're not exactly a focus group.

We have our share of weird unusual in NYC, but I think the furrie population is between 3 & 5, they are not allowed to leave the campus & their is absolutely no danger of them breeding.

re: #361 cliffster

I like the "I inherited a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit" line from Obama. Half of the 1.3 trillion was the bailout, so including it in the figure is marginally sensible at best since it's not "annual spending" as Obama implies. Of that half, half again wasn't used. Obama is trying to funnel it into other programs. So it'll reduce his perceived deficit, while incorrectly applying it to Bush.

And, of the part that WAS used, much of it was paid back.

And how much of the projected deficit is accountable to stopping the accounting gimmicks the Bush admin used to hide the cost of the wars from the bottom line? Part of the budget explosion is because we're actually counting the cost of little things like two-front wars. One of my big respects for Obama is how he's willing to take the political hit on simply acting like a grown-up and not pretending like if you hide the war cost in another ledger, it doesn't count. Someone had to count that stuff eventually.

What did they think... "Well, if his momma is still alive, he'll still have a better life... so, maybe she'll think he died anyway.".

I just think it was an idea consumed by an eagerness to do something good, clouded with stupidity.

Still a legal issue though.

376 cliffster  Thu, Feb 4, 2010 1:54:34pm

re: #364 torrentprime

I repeat - what was the money spent on? You cannot simply compare one money stack to another. If the 94 - 08 crowd spent it on green lantern rings (Iraq), and the Ds spent it on infrastructure and health care reform, which will help stop the runaway spending on health care - how is that bad? I'm not saying it can't be proven, but "you spent more than me" doesn't mean anything. It's like saying someone's $10,000 401k investment was more "wasteful" than someone's $3,000 bar tab because it cost more.

Health Care Reform will not stop runaway spending, it will just force the country into bankruptcy quicker as DC pays for 35% of peoples' runaway spending. And make the insurance companies even richer. If you haven't yet realized that Congress does much of what it does to make their rich buddies even richer, you would be well served in understanding that.

Ben, I thought his point was perfectly reasonable. One of my biggest problems with the way people talk about government spending is that $500,00 spent to clean up some toxic crap that'll kill people and $500,000 used to refurbish someone's office are often treated the same. If we're concerned about government waste, the question of 'what was the spending for', as well as 'what did the spending achieve' should always be a primary question.

Why do you say the loans wouldn't have happened on their own? The vast majority of the loans had absolutely nothing to do with any government program.

So didn't they happen on their own? What do you mean by 'happen on their own'?

Regulations encouraging and requiring loans to people who clearly cannot repay said loans. Fannie Mae standing by to buy the loans and thus absolve the banks giving risky loans from suffering the natural consequences.

Subject: Logo Design

Hello David,

I would like to catch up as I am working on a really exciting project at the moment and need a logo designed. Basically something representing peer to peer networking. I have to have something to show prospective clients this week so would you be able to pull something together in the next few days? I will also need a couple of pie charts done for a 1 page website. If deal goes ahead there will be some good money in it for you.

Dear Simon,

Disregarding the fact that you have still not paid me for work I completed earlier this year despite several assertions that you would do so, I would be delighted to spend my free time creating logos and pie charts for you based on further vague promises of future possible payment. Please find attached pie chart as requested and let me know of any changes required.

Regards, David.

NINJA loans were required by the government? I don't think that's true.

As I see it, the subprime loan crisis was exacerbated because the people SELLING the loans were not the people who held the paper. So there was no barrier, no interest in the part of the person who signed you up for the paper, to make sure you could pay it back. Because they weren't the people who helpd the paper! They got their commission, who cares if it's an adjustable rate loan for a $350,000 house, and the borrower only made $35K a year?

You're blaming it on government, i'm blaming it on lack of government oversight. Ahh, politics.

My all-time claw-my-eyes-out PowerPoint moments are those where the author tosses something like the full text of the Magna Carta on a single slide - and then starts reading it verbatim. Then does it again, and again, and again, for a solid monotone hour.

Presentation Rule: never leave the same slide up for more then five seconds. Half of you remaining audience will fall asleep for every second thereafter.

Presentation Rule: don't read your own damn slides. If that's all you're going to do, I don't need you here - you could have just emailed me the damn presentation, and I could have quietly deleted it. Talk to me, and amplify your bullet points.

Worst presentation ever: the presenter tossed up a slide that was a scan of an encyclopedia page, then sat down. Facing the screen. With his back to the audience. And started reading it. I swear to God this really happened. My eyes start to bleed just thinking about it.

Sorry, I don't think it does depend on who you listen to; I think that there is an objective reality, and that, from every serious study and examation I've seen, that the lenders were overlending and packaging the loans in complex packages that hid the risk from investors who blithely assumed the risk assessment had already been done. I have not seen any credible reports that say that the CRA loans were a signfiicant driver.

Stuff like this:

Researchers compared the default rate (90-day delinquency) within two years of origination. Borrowers with comparable characteristics who had subprime loans were three to five times as likely to go into default as those with CAP loans, the study found.

I'll actually claim ignorance on this one; I didn't "hear" the "we" that way when I composed, nor did I realize it was so offensive. We are certainly not arguing different things for the most part. The house of cards originated on risky loans that were rolled together with the risks obfuscated. I just don't think the loans would have happened to begin with without outside influences. Like Fannie's willingness to take stupid loans off the offending banks' books. And yes, CRA, which we will just have to agree to disagree on.

He's saying if you look at the opinions expressed in the thread, already, that they're inching away from Fox News lies, and towards the truth as accepted by experts.

And then you wildly misrepresented what he said.

I think they were the chairmen of their respective banking committees, or something.

Let's get this clear. I TOTALLY blame Democrats as well as Republicans for this mess. This problem is too big to just gve it over to the same old, same old, D versus R NFL game

But I want actual tight regulation in the housing markets, and on loans. And I want this shell-game of moving mortgage notes and hiding them to investors to end forever. I want all these shady adjustable rate mortgages to be outlawed, because unstable loans that are sold to unwitting people who have a hard time doing the math required to understand what happens if their ARM adjusts when they're underwater and not paying back the principal, they're bad for the country. We have so many people underwater on their loans because of this crap, it's horrifying, and it happened because the bubble was allowed to grow unchecked, due to lack of regulation.

At the end of the day, I want regulation that works. Whether that's Rs doing it, Ds doing it, or green dudes in flying saucers doing it.

Overseeing a failure of regulation.

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

Significant details must still be worked out before Congress can approve a bill. Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.

''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''

No, SS was not designed to force people to set aside money. It was designed to pay out a certain amount of money to people in their old age, after they were past the point of working, to prevent lots of old age poverty.

The funding for SS happens to be tied to taxation that then links to the amount of money people can draw out of it, to a certain extent. But SS could exist as a payout only without a dedicated tax.

One of the problems of SS is that the tax and the payouts are conflated when they don't really have to be.

You are right that it's designed to give the illusion that you're setting aside money.

And the government shouldn't dip into the SS fund because the continued operation of SS is absolutely vital. But that's yet another issue.

re: #577 Obdicut

There is actually a "trust fund", and the idea is indeed to set aside money. For a time, the money taken for social security was placed into this fund and couldn't be spent on other things. Laws were passed somewhere along the line which took away this requirement somewhat - we are now allowed to keep the "trust fund" alive with government securities. So in that sense, it is very much an illusion; essentially we have an account funded with IOU's - from ourselves.

I know there is. That wasn't the point I was making.

Do you understand what I mean about social security payouts being not necessarily tied to the funding of specific SS taxes?

We could get rid of social security taxes and pay for it out of the general fund, and it'd still be social security. There's nothing about the specific funding mechanism that 'really' sets the money aside.

I agree that the money should be safeguarded, but it's not forcing individuals to save. Social security is a program paid for by a dedicated tax. It needs a trust fund to get through periods where receipts are lower than payouts.

But it is not forcing people to save. It's forcing people to pay a tax to pay for social security payments.

Getting through the baby boom doesn't fix anything, the problem is still, you're spending all the money you're supposed to be setting aside.

Who's this 'you' Cliff?
I think it is every politician that bought votes with that trust fund.

Indeed, the language "forcing people to set aside" is overly simplistic and I thought about not saying it - just making a point. gg, we can chat about it more later but again I think we largely agree.

re: #560 cliffster

I find it interesting that whenever you point out corruption and hypocrisy done by democrats, and the reaction from liberals is, "eh, y'know, politicians - they're corrupt and hypocritical".

I like it when people point out all corruption and hypocrisy by all politicians. There are plenty of Democrats I hate, and there are moderate Republicans I like.

But I still vote for Democrats, because at the end of the day, they vote the way I want them to vote. And Republicans on average vote the way I do not want them to vote.

The tribalism gets us nowhere. I vote Democrat because I pay attention to voting records and party platform. That's all. They vote how I want them to vote on average, so i would rather they represent me. That's how simple it is. I applaud Republicans who do things I like. like Mitt Romney!

You seem extremely concerned about the horse race between Republicans and Democrats, Conservatives and Liberals. I'm concerned about policy. Policy isn't a zero-sum game. Many bipartisan efforts have led to great policy, and shitty policy. For example, Ted Kennedy helped author No Child Left behind. No Child Left Behind I think is horrible hideous policy.

That seems to be a trend - on left and right side blogs. I can now see why Obama has told us all to log off and go do something in the meat world.

Another bit from your link:

Hewlett-Packard Held $14 Billion In Profit Overseas To Avoid Paying Taxes. The Washington Post reported, "By the end of its 2003 fiscal year, Hewlett-Packard Co. had 'indefinitely' deferred taxation on $14.4 billion of foreign earnings, according to SEC filings, a move that helped lower its effective tax rate from the statutory corporate income tax rate of 35 percent to 12 percent." In a very simplistic way, this is where classifying the corp as an individual who can fund political advertising will get sticky. They can claim foreign earnings to avoid taxes, but will qualify as domestic corps to fund election campaigns?

Ehh...get used to it, we will all be seeing dozens of corporately funded attack ads later this year thanks to the new Supreme court ruling. As if the lobbyists didn't already have too much power, now instead of just helping the campaigns of the candidates willing to be bought they can also actively campaign against the ones who will not play their game.

The voice of "the average American voter" just got a whole lot fainter than it already was. God help us...

I'm not sure I agree with that analysis. Corporate politicking is certainly nothing new, and I doubt the amount of money spent by corporations on promoting their political agendas will change much at all. What will change is transparency. Rather than having their sponsorship obscured behind layers upon layers of PACs and various front organizations, it's more likely to be up front an obvious that, say, Bank of America is producing a series of ads. Or the Teamsters Union, to which the ruling also applies.
