I get more and more impressed with her. I think she's going to be a hell of a scientist, as well as a popularizer of science.

She certainly has command of her subject. She's obviously very energized and happy when talking about science. It's cool. It gives me hope for the future.

The only problem with the Big Bang is the never-to-be-answered question of "where did the singularity come from?"

And that, my friends, is where God still has room to exist. Like it or not.

Otherwise, it's turtles all the way down, a recursive absurdity, a ridiculous answer to a remarkable question.

Or is it only half-remarkable?

Welcome to the Ekpyrotic Universe. This is one of those times when I, as a goy, find Shabbos inconvenient, because Ludwig isn't here and my M.S. coursework just isn't going to help me explain shit.

Well, it appears that the stupid Texas School Board won't have as much influence on the rest of the country as would have been possible in the past...

The board, whose members are elected, has influence beyond Texas because the state is one of the largest buyers of textbooks. In the digital age, however, that influence has diminished as technological advances have made it possible for publishers to tailor books to individual states.

Thank goodness for small favors... I guess.

80 TedStriker  Fri, Mar 12, 2010 9:59:11pm

Simon Singh, the author of "Big Bang (which Criss is holding in the opening), is having to fight a libel suit against a British chiropractic group that took great exception to him writing an article in (his now former employer) The Guardian that called "bogus" their claims that chiropractic treatments could "help treat children with colic, sleeping and feeding problems, frequent ear infections, asthma and prolonged crying". He's had to devote some much time to his legal defense, he felt it necessary to resign from his science column at The Guardian...bunch of f**king legal bullshit, if you ask me.

It's enough to have caught Congress' attention, according to Wikipedia's quote of a WSJ Europe story:

As a consequence, the U.S. Congress is considering a bill that would make British libel judgments unenforceable in the U.S. ... Mr. Singh is unlikely to be the last victim of Britain's libel laws. Settling scientific and political disputes through lawsuits, though, runs counter the very principles that have made Western progress possible. "The aim of science is not to open the door to infinite wisdom, but to set a limit to infinite error," Bertolt Brecht wrote in The Life of Galileo. It is time British politicians restrain the law so that wisdom prevails in the land, and not errors."

Since this is a Science & Civilization thread...

Poignant book review: The Empathic Civilization: The Race to Global Consciousness in a World in Crisis by Jeremy Rifkin

Whoever hacked into the emails at the University of East Anglia fired the opening salvo in a new kind of dirty war. The Copenhagen conference met on the basis that dealing with global warming was in everyone's interest. The idea that nearly 200 countries could reach meaningful decisions was always unreal, but the meeting's collapse reflected a more fundamental reality.

Environmentalists have always assumed that the threat of disaster will bring about an era of global cooperation. In reality, climate change is triggering another round of geopolitical conflict. Limiting the use of fossil fuels may be essential if disaster is to be avoided, but countries that in different ways rely heavily on these fuels for their prosperity – such as Russia and Saudi Arabia, China and the US – were never going to accept the strict carbon curbs that the EU and others demanded. How much the leaked emails contributed to the breakdown of the summit is unclear, but the effect has been to let those countries, along with the rest of the world, off the hook. The undermining effect on climate science looks like being long-lasting and profound.

"Climategate" was an exercise in postmodern cyber-warfare – a move in a larger conflict that environmentalists show little sign of understanding.
In The Empathic Civilization, Jeremy Rifkin suggests that the whole of history is a struggle between the polar forces of empathy and entropy.

[...]

For all its inordinate length, The Empathic Civilization fails to substantiate its central thesis. The innate sociability of human beings is a fact, but it does not follow that they are likely to cooperate in dealing with environmental crisis. The impact of climate change is rather to intensify human conflict. As global warming accelerates, natural resources such as arable land and water become scarcer, and competition to control them will be acute and pervasive. At the same time, those whose power and wealth come from fossil fuels will do anything they can to promote "climate scepticism".

This is where the leaked emails come in. With global warming fuelling a resurgence of geopolitical tensions, climate science has become a weapon in a war of disinformation. Whatever lapses in intellectual probity they might reveal, the messages are being used to obscure a mass of evidence showing that anthropogenic climate change is real, and may be occurring more rapidly than previously believed. It is still possible to frame an intelligent response to the threat, but first we need to recognise that the climate has become a battleground. Empathy won't save us.

As SattTV shows, this whole conflict is about alot more than a stupid icon, no matter how awful (altho that's a subject worth tackling on its own anyways).

Its about certain peoples sense of ownership of the blog. I mean once people dared challenge them, all kinds of misbehavior show up.. and not just in the current example.

Dude, the Avatar, really. Please don't. People pissing on my constitution get my dander up. That *is* the US. Not the flag. Not the pledge. As a young 2nd Lt., I didn't vow to support any political party, the President, or any branch of Congress. I vowed to protect and defend the Constitution against any enemy, foreign or domestic. Please get rid of that shit.

The context of Cato's avatar is in response to the insanity that took place at the Texas Board of Education today. In this case, it's not Cato that's peeing on the Constitution but the Texas Board of Education.

I think Cato's description in his avatar makes it perfectly clear who he's mocking-- the people who genuinely are pissing on the Constitution. And the Declaration.

I also think that Cato's avatar is probably going to change the same day, if not hour, that Mandy's changes.

I don't disagree, but you have to be a Lizard to view it!

I hope it's not the latter...I do like Mandy and I hope she won't leave/be tossed over a damn avatar.

There is no reason for her to leave, or be tossed. If she leaves it will be because she wanted to.
There is also no reason for her to keep that avatar now, especially now that she knows charles also has an issue with it, and it's being used to smear him and LGF.

Of course, as Charles also pointed out, he was hoping she'd figure it out on her own that it would be a good idea to change it.

Maybe all the people bitching about those of us who find the avatar offense should bear that in mind too.

I'd prefer a Bull Mastiff.

Sorry, I was thinking English Mastiff...

The body is massive with great depth and breadth, especially between the forelegs, causing these to be set wide apart. The AKC standard height (per their website) for this breed is 30 inches (76 cm) at the shoulder for males and 27.5 inches (70 cm) (minimum) at the shoulder for females. A typical male can weigh 150–250 pounds (68–110 kg), a typical female can weigh 120–200 pounds (54–91 kg).

Today I went to the clinic to have my hand checked out (not broken just sprained) and in walks this kid in black. Several ex Navy ladies sitting behind me immediately notice he's wearing a belt made out of bullets...real ones. "That's not allowed here is it?" They are asking me because I am in uniform. I didn't know as I am only a student here. One of them asks if the bullets are real...yes but demilitarized. All good, none of my business if somebody's kid chooses to dress like a bad 80s video extra. Handcuffs hanging off his shoulder, heavy metal band on his jacket, studs everywhere etc. But then he turns around and we see on his boots the Nazi swastika and some hate speech. Technically, still none of my business but offensive. There's a guy with a young kid sitting right in front of me and he's staring at the dude...his yound son's mouth is hanging open. Then I hear the tech call the dude by his rank. Yep, he's a Soldier. I wanted to speak to him about the violation of regs but he left by a side exit before I could. Later mentioning him in class I learn that the instructor and a fellow student had also seen him. Neither had confronted the kid because they were afraid they would get in trouble. Ok. So now I'm wondering what I will do if I see this kid again in the PX, at the clinic, schoolhouse... I know my job and my duty is to inform him he is in violation. I also know in the climate of today's Army, that could well be career suicide. Is it worth it?

The climate with respect to this kind of issue must surely have changed after everybody concluded that reporting Major Hasan would be career suicide.

Mistake. Big, big mistake.

With that example whispering loudly in every upper officer's ear, those who report violations worthy of reporting will be tolerated. At a minimum.

he is both right and wrong. He's talking about performing prog rock live, which you hve to be straight to do. And Zappa isn't fucking around, that is true. He wants his musicians sharp.

But coming up with the IDEAS in many bands, is completely different. Nobody can tell me Brent Hinds isn't a master of prog-metal, and the guy smokes a ton of weed while writing. He just doesn't play live while high. Your experiences and decisions affect your choices in music. Some people get ripped or high and come up with stuff, some don't. it's all good.

right...you could go on and on and on...maybe write a book!...I don't give a damn about what you find offensive, it's the relentless whining...on and on

And no-one gives a damn about your relentless whining! Seriously- every day it's the same thing over and over, anytime anyone is trying to make a point about something :

"Oh get over it...it's nothing...you people all blah blah...no fun...who cares...i'm not interested...so what...I dont look at that stuff...you all think too much...grumble grumble "

Steve and I get along just fine now, but in truth it's because I get him now -- and he rags on others. (newer).

Also, I like him despite his best efforts.

re: #48 daddylawbucks

What happens to kids brought up in that slanted school system when they go out into the world, perhaps in a college class, and begin to see the bias of the teaching they got? Does that prime a generation of kids to believe their government lied to them?

But this will happen in any event, that the schools lie. How much, and about what, is the only issue. The truth about history is just so ugly, cruel, and demoralizing that it's bound to be sugar coated some.

Instance: The real story of the bridge on the river Kwai You can't tell this to children. You just can't.

The holocaust museum in DC has a children's wing. The real thing just won't do.

As kids grow to maturity, they learn a lot about the adult world which they didn't need to know as little ones and weren't ready for. As they discover that their social studies class gave muted coverage of some of America's historical sins, while playing up the better parts, they'll cope.

But have some sense. Don't edit out major characters (e.g. Thomas Jefferson) in favor of minor ones. And, on the other hand, don't limit your coverage of Jefferson in history to Sally Hemmings.

And now, back on topic, ZomGits is a genius. Very good stuff, nicely presented.

Some Scottish people take it personally when someone spells 'whisky' with an 'e'. You'd think someone had proposed adding coca cola, ice cream and sprinkles to the finest single malt as an idea for a summer refreshment, the way they go on. ;-)

273 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Fri, Mar 12, 2010 11:48:35pm

Back on topic, but just barely...

There is one person that I speak with often, and on the subject of the study of cosmology/space exploration their comment is always (boiled down to) "What for? Why bother?"

No answer that I can come up with is satisfactory, this person sees no value in the efforts to reach beyond our cradle for information that can be gained from The Great Unknown, The Big Black.

WUB-- just so you know, I just explained to Jimmah that you're a beer person. So to speak. :)
Also, 'imperial pint' isn't known to people in the UK-- they just think of a pint as a pint. They don't know the measurement or that it's larger than a US 'pint'-- (glass of beer).

Assume, for a moment, all of this true ...

1) The universe we exist in is infinity old [and other clusters of galaxies exist in it that are too far away for their light to be either discernible or have reached us yet ... and there an infinite number of such clusters].

2) There are an infinite number of universes [a multiverse].

3) Universes come into existence at an infinite rate.

4) All universes will last infinitely long and are infinitely old.

---------------------------------------------------------
Is there a God in all this that man can imagine and construct dogma regarding?

IMHO, there are probably "gods" somewhere in this infinity.

Did any of these "gods" nurture any of this real-estate in the last 14 billion yrs for one species on one planet in one solar system in one galaxy, amongst billions?

Probably not? ... that said, given the sublime perfection of the universe we reside in, who knows.

BTW, regarding the 3rd point ... it may be far-fetched [personally, I can not wrap my mind around a universe, having just come into existence, also being infinitely old ... that said, it does not appear to be impossible].
