True eloquence, indeed, does not consist in speech. It cannot be brought from far. Labor and learning may toil for it, but they will toil in vain. Words and phrases may be marshalled in every way, but they cannot compass it. It must exist in the man, in the subject, and in the occasion.

For the ease and repose of Lizards everywhere - hippy-dippy song about life, the universe, and everything.

“Maya” = the veil of the world beyond which to pass leads to enlightenment. I haven’t made it yet.

In time
Her hair
Grew long and swept the ground.
And seven blackbirds carried it out behind.
It bore the holy imprint of her mind,
As greenfoot slow
She move
Among the seasons.

This is one of my favorite Phil Hendrie bits ever. For the uninitiated, Phil hendrie is playing both himself as the host as well as his character, David Hall. The premise is Hall is Hendrie’s boss and wants to force him to support Kerry on-air (Hendrie supported Bush) during the 2004 election. And then it just becomes almost cosmically hilarious.

Liked Webster on Eloquence.

I must admit that the people who’ve influencedme most on Christianity are not the ones who preach it full in my face and force it on me but the ones who quietly live a Christian life and invite me to take part.

I wonder if some of it doesn’t have to do with Old Europe and its crowded cities where people whent to church to find some peace and quiet and a chance to look within and meditate on the mysteries of God vs. America with its isolated settlements where people came to church to interact and express themselves. Often as loudly as boisterously as possible.

There’s something much deeper at work here, something far more complex.

I get the feeling that Walmart is about to find themselves on the losing end of a wrongful termination lawsuit, not to mention being in violation of state law.

Walmart fires Michigan man for using medical marijuana

In 2008, Casias was the Associate Of The Year at the WalMart store in Battle Creek, despite suffering from sinus cancer and an inoperable brain tumor.

At his doctor’s recommendation, Casias says he legally uses medical marijuana to ease his pain.

“It helps tremendously,” he says. “I only use it to stop the pain. To make me feel more comfortable and active as a person.”

During his five years at WalMart, Casias says he went to work every day, determined to be the best.

“I gave them everything,” he says. “110 percent every day. Anything they asked me to do I did. More than they asked me to do. 12 to 14 hours a day.”

But last November, Casias sprained his knee at work. Marijuana was detected in his system during the routine drug screening that follows all workplace injuries. Casias showed WalMart managers his state medical marijuana card, but he was fired anyway.

“I was told they do not accept or honor my medical marijuana card,” says Casias.

Here’s the relevant section of the Michigan statute for reference:

Section 333.26424 - MICHIGAN MEDICAL MARIHUANA ACT

4. Protections for the Medical Use of Marihuana.

Sec. 4. (a) A qualifying patient who has been issued and possesses a registry identification card shall not be subject to arrest, prosecution, or penalty in any manner, or denied any right or privilege, including but not limited to civil penalty or disciplinary action by a business or occupational or professional licensing board or bureau, for the medical use of marihuana in accordance with this act, provided that the qualifying patient possesses an amount of marihuana that does not exceed 2.5 ounces of usable marihuana, and, if the qualifying patient has not specified that a primary caregiver will be allowed under state law to cultivate marihuana for the qualifying patient, 12 marihuana plants kept in an enclosed, locked facility. Any incidental amount of seeds, stalks, and unusable roots shall also be allowed under state law and shall not be included in this amount.

Would you not agree that one of our deep-seated psychological needs which is going largely unfulfilled these days is the need to regain a sense of some semblance of control over the multitude of forces which affect our own lives? America has lost much of its economic preeminence; American military supremacy is under challenge; the MSM lacks decency and ethics; many American politicians seem to be a bunch of crooked, self-serving, immoral liars; society’s thirst for cheap energy and cheap goods has cost America much of its manufacturing base and hi-tech jobs; and many people are out of work and many have lost their homes. The future is uncertain.
The separation of Church and State is under siege partly as a result of peoples’ difficulty in handling the terrible mess they are in. Many are so desperate for answers that they are vulnerable to being sucked in by the facile explanations and promises of the religious extremists.
This is the context in which I view this rise in religious extremism.

Typical of workers comp insurers (Wal-Mart self insures). If you get hurt at work you have to submit to a drug test. Someone in the Wal-Mart command chain should have known he was using what Michigan considers a legal drug.

They don’t care. Company policy overrides State law (or so they believe).

“In an e-mail from headquarters, WalMart spokesman Greg Rossiter explained the company policy. It states: “In states, such as Michigan, where prescriptions for marijuana can be obtained, an employer can still enforce a policy that requires termination of employment following a positive drug screen. We believe our policy complies with the law and we support decisions based on the policy.”

I don’t know that was ever the case but if it was it changed long before he died. When I got out of the Army I went to work for a company that did all their business with Wal-Mart. I don’t think people realize how many American millionaires Wal-mart has created including my former boss and the majority of his VP’s. 10 years before that job I hadn’t even heard of Wal-Mart.

re: #51 Bubblehead II

There’s no way they can win. If it’s a legal prescription in the state of MI then he can’t be fired for using a legal drug. They must be afraid it will set a standard.

Yesterday we were talking about unemployment laws. Wal-Mart paid for a massive mgmt seminar I went through in Charlotte NC. They brought in a law firm from texas that specialized in employment law. They made a point to let us know if it’s a protected activity by the feds or the state then the company could do nothing about it. The example was peyote and some indian tribe out west and the only reason I remember is because I got into a minor argument with one of the senior VP’s when the lawyer asked the question. I was right and the VP was irritable.

That was also the week they made us all take a drug test and I told my VP he could suck my balls.

54 Bubblehead II  Mar 13, 2010 4:48:00am

One of the comments referenced a recent SCOTUS decision that basically said that the Federal Drug Laws were meant to combat recreational drug use and dealing, not to regulate medicine.

U.S. Supreme Court:

FEDERAL LAW DOES NOT TRUMP STATE LAWS ON MEDICAL MARIJUANA

by Steve Kubby (he’s a libertarian btw)

Last Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court Monday quietly, but overwhelmingly destroyed the allegations by state law enforcement that, “Federal law trumps state laws on medical marijuana.”

The Supremes declined to review a lower court decision that ordered Garden Grove, California, police to return marijuana seized from a medical marijuana patient. In November 2007, the California Fourth District Court of Appeal had ordered the marijuana returned, finding that “it is not the job of local police to enforce federal drug laws.”

This was the fourth shot the Supremes had at bringing down Prop. 215 and, instead, the high court handed us a silent, but deadly victory.

Here is how the three Appeals Court judges put it:

“Congress enacted the CSA to combat recreational drug abuse and curb drug trafficking. Gonzales v. Oregon, supra, 546 U.S. at p. 271; Gonzales v. Raich, supra, 545 U.S. at pp. 10-13.) Its goal was not to regulate the practice of medicine, a task that falls within the traditional powers of the states. (Gonzales v. Oregon, supra, 546 U.S. at p. 269.) Speaking for the majority in Gonzales v. Oregon, Justice Kennedy explained, “The [CSA] and our case law amply support the conclusion that Congress regulates medical practice insofar as it bars doctors from using their prescription-writing powers as a means to engage in illicit drug dealing and trafficking as conventionally understood. Beyond this, however, the statute manifests no intent to regulate the practice of medicine generally.” (Ibid.)”

The California Supreme Court refused to review the case in March.

Now, the U.S. Supreme Court has followed suit. The refusals to hear the appeal means the two high courts have accepted the state appeals court’s reasoning that California’s medical marijuana law is not preempted by f”

Looks like he got cut off at the end. I haven’t been able to find a link to that decision yet though. Will try looking at the NORML site and see if they have anything on it.

I had just left the military, single, loved to travel and didn’t mind living out of a hotel for years. Plus, I had two different districts in a part of the country no one else wanted (the Dakotas) and both of my districts were in the top 10 in sales and employee retention. I worked almost 80 hours a week, every week. I was on the road working from 6am until 9pm. I told him what I did on what little free time I had was my own business and if they could find someone to do the job I was doing then go ahead and fire me but I smoke and I’m not going to apologize to anyone. My test disappeared.

I also told him my test was going to come back so hot the technician could get a contact buzz by smelling my sample. I knew before I flew in they were going to test us (it was supposed to be a secret) and I still smoked it before I got on that little ass plane in the middle of nebraska, in the middle of winter, and brought some with me.

Yep. That’s why my employer went “drug free”. It cut down on their workmans comp insurance premiums. Until then, if you came in sober, they didn’t give a damn.

Occasionally I will have a customer require that I have a company drug/alcohol policy that includes random testing before I can show up at their site. They never ask to see the policy and have specifically told me they do not want to see the test results. I have always thought that strange. I’ll bet some lawyers are involved.

I took that political test to see where I fit in on their scale and ended up almost dead middle. I think it’s because half my views would be considered very liberal and the other half very conservative. I’m an extremist.

There is a large drug manufacturer in Indy that is like that. If you do any work with them at all, even just manufacturing push carts, they want a very specific policy and they want the right to come in and inspect your facility.

re: #77 RogueOne

Most of my employees smoke and I know they smoke. They’ve all been told I don’t care what they do on their own time but if I get the idea they’re smoking before/during work they’re fired. You can’t do our kind of work high, it’s dangerous enough sober. The problem is if they get hurt at work my insurance company insists they take a test and if it comes back positive their claims will definitely be denied.

Morning lizards!

My ex was an alcoholic, a very responsible one. Never drank on the job. He was a truck driver, but I always thought it was still dangerous when he’d go to work seriously hung over. Pot doesn’t do that, of course.

I have a friend who actually jumped off a bridge and broke his arm because someone laced a joint and didn’t warn him. Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The US is busy hyperventilating over Israel’s decision to build housing. Again.

Even though everyone with a functioning neuron should know that housing isn’t an impediment to peace or even a threat to the peace process because you can always transfer housing once it is built. It’s been done before and it will likely happen again, even as the real impediment to peace are the terrorist groups representing the Palestinian people - Hamas and Fatah. They haven’t changed their charters calling for Israel’s destruction, they haven’t taken any confidence building measures like releasing Gilad Shalit or ending the Friday sermons calling for violence against Israel - the incitements to violence that were supposed to end after the signing and implementation of Olso.

Let us see some tangible evidence that the Palestinians want peace - rather than Israel in pieces.

re: #157 lawhawk

Well, if you’re Obama hyperventilating over homes being built in the West Bank is easier than trying to wrestle with Fatah and Hamas. It lets him seem ‘evenhanded’ to his base, and lets him look like he’s pushing for peace in the eyes of the MSM. Its a bullshit, but like the GOP the Dems sometimes have to focus on throwing meat to the base rather than actually trying to address the problem.

I love the way the Obama administration sends the senile coot Biden to get all pissed off at Israel and to posture and whine and bitch until the Israelis are seen to be intimidated into putting a temporary freeze on the EJ building which wasn’t going to happen for 2 years in any event.
Meanwhile the Islamofascists in Gaza and the West Bank can just sit back and wait for The Islamic Republic of Iran to test a nuke, secure in the knowledge that the West is too weak and cowardly to stop them even as the Islamist regime publicly predicts the annihilation of Israel.
It sure is great theater…too bad it’s such a tragedy.

I guess the same could be said about chocolate, alcohol and a whole host of other things…

There is nothing in Judaism about keeping kosher in Heaven. I figure if you can make it up there then it should finally be open season!

I can’t remember book, chapter or verse, but there is a passage in the Bible where Peter is dreaming. This big sheet comes down from heaven and God says “Hey, Peter, you look hungry, have some lunch.” And Peter replies “No way, Lord! Some of these animals aren’t on the approved list!” God tells him “Now Peter, I made all of these animals, you trying to tell me I messed up?!?!”

Thankfully (for him) Peter doesn’t go there.

During the Great Depression there was some radicalism and extremism and disillusionment, but by and large it seems to me like Americans stuck to their core values and principles, believing that the economic conditions were temporary and not worth giving up on what had clearly been proven to work over the long term.

Unfortunately most Americans today have no concept of the long term.

re: #34 Spare O’Lake

(*Repost of my late response from previous dead thread*)

Good Morning LGF

UKIP, darling of the “counterjihad” movement, calls for ethnic cleansing of the UK…..
Ethnically Cleansing the English (via google)
by Paul Weston

The anger amongst the indigenous working classes is palpable, and it is growing. As the working class EDL take to the streets stentoriously chanting “We want our country back, we want our culture back” and the middle class socialist students who joined the Islamist-infiltrated UAF — as a sop to their inability to score with either a football or a member of the opposite sex — respond with girlishly high pitched squeals of “Nazi scum off our streets”, then I see no reason to defer my prediction of European civil war by 2025.

British Home Secretary Alan Johnson does not share my apocalyptic vision of potential civil unrest, claiming he did not lie awake at night worrying about the prospect of a 70 million British population and that he enjoyed living in a multicultural society; but now we know this is just a lie to facilitate a far greater evil.

Liberals tell us colonialism was evil, so why is the colonisation of white countries by non-white peoples — in far greater numbers than whites were ever sent to non-white countries — a matter of celebration? In 2050 the streets of Pakistani and Bangladeshi cities will be thronged with Pakistanis and Bangladeshis; there will be no white people there, just as there will be no white people on the streets of London, Luton, Paris, Rotterdam, Brussels, Malmö, etc. etc.

The Jean Raspail quote at the beginning of this article should not be taken lightly. Whites made up almost 30% of the global population in 1950, but by 2050 they will be down to single digits, and producing just 5% of the new-born. For a race of people with such a tenuous grasp of life on this unfriendly planet, to be forced into a minority within your own homeland, which is your only point of defence, is an act of criminality without precedence.

My son who turned 21 recently will be joining me from the Bay area while he’s on spring break. First time road trip for the two of us being able to legally share a beverage in public. The agenda will be Blue Man Group and any other live music to be had, golf, poker and hanging out in the Sports Book. The Paris will be our base of operations.

Originally my wife was going to be along but last month made the decision to let the boys hang out on their own, and told the Man-Cub to enjoy his time with his Dad. What a Gal.

The University of Maryland has a contract with the NIH to do the pre-clinical trials (Safety tests) on Ventricular Assist Devices for children. A Ventricular Assist Device (VAD, sometimes called a LVAD because a great majority of them are attached to the left ventricle) is a tiny “engine” that can be attached to a weak heart and reduce its workload. It can help a heart survive longer to better the chances of finding a transplant; and in some case can even take over enough of the workload to let the heart rest and repair itself.

Page down to the bottom of this link and check out how small some of these things are!

Newsweek:

The press finally falls out of love with Obama

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, was 50 minutes late for his briefing, apparently a record for tardiness, but few reporters in the White House press room bothered to feign outrage; they didn’t seem all that eager to ask him questions anyway. When his boss flew to Missouri to give another of his “high octane” (The New York Times), “impassioned” (The Washington Post) health-care speeches, no cable channel covered the event. If you are president, the only thing worse than criticism is not being covered. And the truth is, we in the press are bored with Barack.

The “mainstream media” are losing patience with, and even interest in, their erstwhile hero. President Barack Obama never had a chance with the Ailes-Murdoch crowd, of course, and it didn’t take the president long to offend the fierce left wing of the blogosphere. But now, finally, the MSM, which views itself as ideologically neutral, has found ideologically neutral reasons to lose patience with him: that he may be ineffectual; that he doesn’t know how to play the game; that he can’t get anything done. Exhibit A: the health-care bill. The Times’s Frank Rich, the astute dean of the commentariat, wrote recently that Obama has failed to “communicate a compelling narrative” in office and, as a result, “could be toast if he doesn’t make good on a year’s worth of false starts.”

You can add Sean Penn to the long list of people who have been called out by Ozzie Guillen.

The outspoken White Sox manager called Penn a “payaso” (clown) and “izquierdista estupido” (stupid leftist) on Twitter Friday for his praise of controversial Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.

“Oh my God, Sean Penn defended our President Hugo Chavez,” Guillen, a Venezuela native, tweeted. “That’s easy when you [don’t] live in Venezuela and have money. LOL…shame on [you].”

Hi Cato - I just noticed that Irish Rose has gone full mental stalker tonight on Charles and LGF over on her grief hole of a blog. As expected.

Well, she agrees with the stalkers about a lot of things now.

It’s a shame, really. There are a lot of us out here who agree with Charles politically – we just can’t stomach or support what the site is becoming under his angry, knee-jerk reactionism and the tender ministrations of registrants like Cato, Iceweasel, and Jimmah.

Evil trio alert!

Rose, since you’re having a conversation all by yourself over there (one post and three comments, all by you), let me point out what you’ve always been too thick to grasp: the line between sycophant and stalker is a fine one. Neither contributes anything to a blog discussion. The one just praises and expects pats on the head, while the other gets angry without proper care and attention. They can morph back and forth into each other. Which you have now done.

On Sept. 11, she suddenly left Leadville, Colo., a small town in the Rocky Mountains, for Denver, then for New York, to meet and marry a Muslim man she connected with online, her family says. Ms. Paulin-Ramirez, who is 5-foot-11 and blonde, phoned her mother and stepfather in Leadville, providing them with an address in Waterford, Ireland, they say.

Looks like it was at least the fourth marriage for her.

By signing off his Israel visit with an Al Jazeera interview, Joe Biden made it perfectly clear exactly how he feels about the Jewish state.

‘They Just Want This Over’

Sitting in an airport, on his way home to Michigan, Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life Democrat, is chagrined. “They’re ignoring me,” he says, in a phone interview with National Review Online. “That’s their strategy now. The House Democratic leaders think they have the votes to pass the Senate’s health-care bill without us. At this point, there is no doubt that they’ve been able to peel off one or two of my twelve. And even if they don’t have the votes, it’s been made clear to us that they won’t insert our language on the abortion issue.”

According to Stupak, that group of twelve pro-life House Democrats — the “Stupak dozen” — has privately agreed for months to vote ‘no’ on the Senate’s health-care bill if federal funding for abortion is included in the final legislative language. Now, in the debate’s final hours, Stupak says the other eleven are coming under “enormous” political pressure from both the White House and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.). “I am a definite ‘no’ vote,” he says. “I didn’t cave. The others are having both of their arms twisted, and we’re all getting pounded by our traditional Democratic supporters, like unions.”

Stupak notes that his negotiations with House Democratic leaders in recent days have been revealing. “I really believe that the Democratic leadership is simply unwilling to change its stance,” he says. “Their position says that women, especially those without means available, should have their abortions covered.” The arguments they have made to him in recent deliberations, he adds, “are a pretty sad commentary on the state of the Democratic party.”

What are Democratic leaders saying? “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. That’s one of the arguments I’ve been hearing,” Stupak says. “Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life we’re talking about.”

WTF???

Good morning lizards. I saw Hillary on my TV this morning scolding the Israelis about building a few apartments. Don’t ya love the outrage from this administration over that while Iran’s Manhattan Project continues to move forward with no outrage.

One of the main reasons the Vice President was in Israel to was to reaffirm our special relationship and to coordinate sanctions / strategy with respect to the Iranian nuclear program. Instead, what should have been a love-fest between the two countries, and it was shaping up that way with Biden offering glowing praise of Prime Minister Netanyahu, was turned on it’s head.

I’ve seen it argued that the US, Quartet and international response has been overblown, but I don’t have a tremendous amount of sympathy for the Prime Minister, whose Interior Minister pointlessly upended a strategically and diplomatically important high-level visit.

WTF???

Stupak is desperate. And lying, of course.

March 6th

Arguably the single biggest threat to health care reform is Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and his dozen Democratic allies, who are threatening to kill the legislation over indirect, circuitous funding of abortion.

Efforts to work with Stupak are ongoing, but it’s worth emphasizing a relevant detail: Stupak is just wrong about the underlying policy dispute. Whether he knows he’s wrong, and he’s just hoping to kill health care reform, is unclear. But the accuracy of Stupak’s claims aren’t in dispute: the facts aren’t on his side.

Since then he’s losing some of the people he counted on. Good.

PATIENT’S ORDEAL AS BODIES ARE LEFT ON WARD FOR HOURS

A HOSPITAL patient told yesterday of her “eight hours of horror” after the bodies of three dead people were left in their beds – with one not taken out until the ward was full of visitors.

Sarah Stevenson was undergoing treatment at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham when three patients on her ward died in the same afternoon.

The grandmother was appalled when the body of the first patient, who died around 1pm, was left in bed for more than four hours, allowing a stench to spread through the ward.

Although this patient was finally moved, two more patients died and the final body was not removed until 8.30pm when the ward was full of families visiting relatives.

The hospital said it was not able to remove the first body for hours because specialist equipment was needed and staff had to contact the family.

Mrs Stevenson, 64, a lung patient, blamed the pressure placed on over-worked nurses. “There were three people who died on the same day in that ward and one of the bodies was in a bed opposite me, a patient who died at 1pm. Another one died at around 2pm and the third a while later.

“The stench was horrendous. The porters finally turned up to take the last away during visiting hours nearly eight hours later when the ward was full of families.

“It was appalling and it should never take that long. The nurses were pushed to the limit and couldn’t control a lot of what was going on.”

But a hospital spokeswoman said the patient whose body had been left for four hours was not moved for specific clinical reasons which were “too sensitive” to release.

Nurses’ union: Care does not include sex

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – A union representing Dutch nurses will launch a national campaign Friday against demands for sexual services by patients who claim it should be part of their standard care.

The union, NU’91, is calling the campaign “I Draw The Line Here,” with an advert that features a young woman covering her face with crossed hands.

The union said in a statement Thursday that the campaign follows a complaint it had received in the last week from a 24-year-old woman who said a 42-year-old disabled man asked her to provide sexual services as part of his care at home.

The young woman witnessed some of the man’s other nurses offering him sexual gratification, the union said. When she refused to do the same, he tried to dismiss her on the grounds that she was unfit to provide care.

“This type of action is not part of the job responsibilities of carers and nurses,” NU’91 said.

The case has been reported to police, the union added.

re: #385 MandyManners

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) says it is shocked by the harsh public criticism recently directed at Israel by the US Administration.

ADL’s Abraham Foxman, who is offering the criticisms in the above article, wrote this on Thursday:
huffingtonpost.com

The stage was set therefore for the most successful effort for strengthening U.S.-Israel relations since the new administration entered office. And then came the announcement of plans for building 1,200 new apartments in East Jerusalem.

One doesn’t have to accept the most cynical interpretation of that announcement, and I surely don’t, that the prime minister knew about it, to recognize what a disaster it was. Whatever the motivation and whoever the responsible party, it is the government of Israel that justifiably is held accountable for converting an optimal moment in U.S.-Israel relations into a moment of crisis. The crucial point is that the government had an obligation to anticipate what might go wrong during the vice president’s visit and to give firm instruction to all cabinet members about avoiding such pitfalls, particularly on the subjects of settlements and East Jerusalem.

That the administration was angry was not surprising. First was the sense of personal embarrassment to Mr. Biden, especially since part of his mission was to enhance the relationship. Second was the need to separate itself from the Israeli actions, lest it be perceived that the coincidence of the Biden presence and the building announcement be linked in the minds of the Palestinians and Arab world. And third, with the proximity talks in the works, the administration undoubtedly saw a vociferous reaction as necessary to mitigate Palestinian anger so that the talks would proceed.

While much of this is understandable, there needs to be some stepping back so that there are no long-term deleterious results from this contretemps. The vice president’s comments in his Tel Aviv University address softening the U.S. response was helpful. Less helpful were his comments that Israel’s announcement on building in East Jerusalem was endangering American troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Interior Minister is from the very right Orthodox party - some are reading this as a dig at Netanyahu, meant to embarrass him.

re: #421 Obdicut

Why do you place any credibility in that statement, Mandy?

Not sure what could have given us the idea he might be telling the truth. It might have something to do with this:

thehill.com

Hardly any Democrat running for Congress seems to want to talk about healthcare.

Of the 26 leading Democratic House candidates contacted by The Hill, only one would commit to voting for the Senate healthcare bill if and when it comes to the House floor.

Out of the more than two dozen Democratic challengers and open-seat House candidates, only 10 commented for this story. Eight outright declined to comment.

Eight more didn’t respond to several days’ worth of requests via phone and e-mail.

or maybe this:
politico.com

In addition, it looks like House Democrats won’t have to vote directly on a Senate bill they really don’t like. The speaker hasn’t made a final decision, but she told her rank-and-file during the meeting that the plan now is to craft a rule that would “deem” the Senate bill passed once they approve the package of fixes.

That means they would vote on the rule and the so-called reconciliation package, which would make changes to the Senate bill and only requires 51 votes to pass in the Upper Chamber.

It’s so popular they don’t want to vote or talk about it.

Bollocks. None of that has anythng to do with Stupak, btw, or his bullshit on HCR.
It does have something to do with the article I linked upthread though, about the PsyOps.

Check out this Yglesias piece too, which imo nails it:

I don’t think the arguments mounted by Pat Caddell and Douglas Schoen that Democrats will face political disaster if they pass health reform hold water. Or, rather, I think they disingenuously fail to consider the alternative. If reform passes, Democrats will almost certainly lose a whole bunch of seats in November. But if reform fails, Democrats will also almost certainly lose a whole bunch of seats in November. At the margin, passing reform helps the party’s prospects in the midterms in my view, but the midterms outlook is just bad and there’s nothing to be done health care-wise at this point to change that.

[…]
The takeaway:

Which is just to say that nobody lasts in office forever, no congressional majority lasts forever, and no party controls the White House forever. But the measure of a political coalition isn’t how long it lasted, but what it achieved. From the tone of a lot of present-day political commentary you’d think that the big mistake Lyndon Johnson made during his tenure in the White House was that by passing the Civil Rights Act he wound up damaging the Democratic Party politically by opening the South up to the GOP. Back on planet normal, that’s the crowning achievement of his presidency.

With the link drop this a.m., this one hasn’t appeared:

Vice President Joe Biden left Israel with an apology from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the diplomatic uproar that overshadowed his visit and further encumbered a U.S. peace initiative.

Near the beginning of his visit on Tuesday, Israel’s Interior Ministry publicized its approval of a plan to build 1,600 homes in east Jerusalem—territory claimed by Palestinians.

A statement from the prime minister’s office Thursday expressed “regret over the unfortunate timing” and declared that ground wouldn’t be broken on the project for several years. It also pledged to ensure similar “incidents” wouldn’t recur.

re: #452 Charles

No politician would say that. Stupak is a religious fanatic member of The Family, and he’s simply lying.

He’s also working closely with some of the more politically active pro-life catholic bishops:

(Newsweek) When Bishops Play Politics

Now a new generation of bishops, appointed by Pope John Paul II and activist especially on life issues, sees the opportunity to affect abortion policy. They’ve seized, in particular, on the Democrats’ lack of unity on the choice issue, and they’ve stepped into that gap by articulating a firm and uncompromising anti-abortion stance.

These new bishops are freelancers, comfortable speaking in public and making their own connections with politicians.

This strategy has worked, to a point. I spoke last week to Rep. Bart Stupak, the Catholic Democrat from Michigan who, at the 11th hour, attached an amendment to the House health-care bill restricting the use of government funds to any health-care plan that includes abortion. The bishops, he says, were “very, very, very engaged” in the framing of the amendment. Through last summer and fall, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops “was working with my staff.” But as the House headed toward a vote, “I asked them to come by, to make sure we were on the same page. After that first meeting, I said, ‘I’m not moving forward until you know what I’m doing.’ We had to coordinate forces. They’d ask us about members. I’d say, ‘I’ve talked to this one but not to that one.’ ” The bishops, in other words, were counting votes.

It’s a pretty transparent gimmick, Massa did the same thing. Dems in trouble have learned that all they have to do is to invent some outrageous outrage and Republicans will immediately jump to their aid. It doesn’t have to be even close to being true, the more outrageous the lie the better. A few Dems have just learned to exploit the easily outraged wingnuts.

re: #486 RogueOne

What are you talking about, dude?

I’m saying: The people opposed to the bill staunchly are opposed to the Democrats trying to pass it in the first place. They’re not going to ‘forgive’ them if the Democrats fail to pass it and go, “oh, wait, these Democrats aren’t so bad, I’ll vote for one!”

The people mildly opposed to the bill are going to start thinking about other things after its passed, and the Democrats need to get the attention off the bill— by passing it— in order to start getting them on board.

The people who are apathetic right now towards the Democrats since they can’t seem to do anything will get energized by the passage of the bill, which will transform into support for the Democrats.

I don’t get this idea that the opposition to the bill means that the Democrats should fold, politically. It doesn’t add up, to me.

In every case in the past where the GOP has tried to sink a social program like this, it has killed them in the end politically. Every time. The only exception I can think of is ERA, which I think isn’t really comparable.

Yep. I still wonder, who in the hell can they run in 2012?

If the economy continues to recover, we get out of Afghanistan and Iraq, jobs return, and people start getting decent health care, the GOP will invest about 7 million dollars in 2012, and spend that money on clothes for their candidate and her kids. An anti-peace and prosperity ticket isn’t going to do well.

I think he’s living in a fantasy land. Everyone knows this is hugely unpopular right now, if it weren’t they wouldn’t have to try to find ways around normal parliamentary procedure so they can try to claim they didn’t actually vote for it. Even in a decent economy they still were going to lose seats, by passing this in way they can they’re setting themselves up to take a beating. I’m not being a concern troll, I’m just saying.

And if they don’t pass it they will loose seats too.

Polls now show a slight uptick in the approval ratings and when you look at the polls basically half of us approve and half of us don’t. I am more annoyed that the House has not just passed the damn Senate bill, gotten it signed and moved on to change that which should be changed.
And before anyone says that means the bill sucks…wrong, most large legislation ends up needing tweaks.
(and I am tired of the house whining about not trusting the Senate or worrying about their seats. Their job is to do what they think is best for the country not what will get them re-elected.)

We only have every poll, NJ, VA, the kennedy seat, all the payoffs, and the attempt to bypass normal procedure as evidence. Stay alert, stay alive.

Polls say half want it, half do not (give or take a few points) and when asked about the parts people support it even more.
NJ and VA had nothing to do with HCR and polling in MA polls have shown that HCR had nothing to do with Brown winning.
There is no “attempt to bypass normal procedure” either.
This is a narrative that is not based in reality.

A little more on poor, poor Stupak:
Hoyer: I’m Not Negotiating On Abortion Provisions in Health Care Bill

TPM’s Brian Beutler reports from Capitol Hill that House Democrats are moving forward on health care with or without prolife Rep. Bart Stupak and the dozen lawmakers he might get to attempt to block the bill.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters this morning that Democrats “have not discussed a third way” and that when he spoke with Stupak (D-MI) about the abortion provisions he wants in the measure, “I made it clear that I wasn’t negotiating.”

“We don’t want to go without their votes, but we do want to forge ahead, and as you know Mr. Stupak has made it very very clear that he’s very strongly in favor of achieving health care in this Congress. And I think that a lot of his colleagues feel the same way,” Hoyer said.

That’s why he’s off whining to NRO, btw. No one wants to play with him any more.

Union thugs threaten Democrats…

SEIU Warns Dems: If You Don’t Back Reform, We Won’t Back You

Hardball time.

In what seems intended as a shot across the bow of House Dems wavering on health reform, top officials with the labor powerhouse SEIU have bluntly told a Democratic member that they will pull their support for him — and will likely field a challenger against him — if he votes No on the Senate bill.

Dem Rep Mike McMahon of New York met yesterday with a top SEIU official and told him he’s likely to vote No, the official tells me. The official: Mike Fishman, president of SEIU 32bj, the largest property workers union in the country, with 120,000 members in eight states.

Fishman told McMahon that the union would not support him if he voted No — and suggested the hunt for a primary or third-party challenger would follow.

“He let us know he’s not supportive of the health care plan,” Fishman says. “We’ve let him know that we can’t support somebody who doesn’t support it.”

“We are going to begin talking to other unions about finding someone else for that seat,” Fishman continued.

McMahon enjoyed heavy labor backing when he was elected to his conservative Staten Island district in 2008. He voted No on the bill last time but was said to be undecided on the Senate bill, and labor had hoped to win his support for the crucial final vote.

Fishman said SEIU officials were intent on sending a message to other House Dems that they risk losing the union’s support if they don’t vote for the bill — and said the union’s rank and file membership strongly wanted reform to pass.

The Dems are going to lose seats in November. Possibly the House. That’s just always the way for a midterm esp when you have both the executive and the legislative under one party. The major issue is and will be the economy— that is also always the best predictor of incumbents losing.
People will try to spin it as a rejection of the Dems or a rejection of Obama, but it’s going to be anti-incumbent sentiment.

Police investigating union worker fight at hospital

GARDEN GROVE – A 31-year-old union employee could face misdemeanor assault charges after she pushed another union worker who was meeting with employees at Garden Grove Hospital’s cafeteria, police said.

The incident, caught on video and posted on YouTube, shows a woman talking to a hospital employee in a high-pitched, emotional voice. Then the man holding the camera remarks: “Blame it on the members, blame your incompetence…” At that point, the woman charges toward the camera mouthing obscenities at the man and knocks the camera out of his hands, the video shows.

Police responded to the incident, which occurred at about 10:05 p.m. Feb. 23, said Garden Grove police Lt. Travis Whitman. Police were called to the same location about 8:30 p.m. for a “disturbance.” Whitman said there were no incidents or arrests during the earlier call.

He said the woman in the video has been identified as 31-year-old Liz Castillo, a member of the local SEIU United Healthcare Workers West Chapter. Whitman said the man who was hit was not injured. “We’re waiting to talk to (Castillo),” he said.

I know. Which is why I’m far more concerned with the quality of the people the GOP is putting up in those places I think the Democrats will lose. I really don’t mind Democrats losing seats— most of them aren’t worth a damn. But I do mind if they’re replaced by an AGW-denying Paulian Theocrat nutjob.

Sadly, the chances of the GOP halting in its mad rush towards total political insanity before the elections seems very low.

And the chances of the AGW-denying Paulian Theocrat nut jobs getting elected is probably very high.

Bloody Thursday - 1934
3 Killed, 31 Shot in Widespread Rioting
SCORES INJURED, GASSED AS POLICE BATTLE MOBS; CARGO MOVING CONTINUES

The National Guard was ordered to San Francisco’s waterfront by Gov. Merriam today as riot after riot swept the Embarcadero, swirled around the Ferry Building and gripped the downtown industrial area and Rincon Hill.

Two men were killed by bullets, another by injuries, 31 others were shot and an untold number, including police, were clubbed, gassed, beaten and stoned.

One of the reasons I’m learning to love this blog is just how quickly Charles does reply to stuff. Not sure it’s always the best plan, but it sure drives conversation.

I enjoy watching to a point, but then I find it gets boring after a while. I enjoy the way threads here stay on topic for a hundred comments or so, but then evolve into branches of open topics. Charles’ beef with the right, or more accurately, the right’s beef with Charles, is always something I pay little attention to, though it is interesting to see how he responds at times. Mostly, I think he enjoys the barrage and mocking their e-threats for what they are…pissy tirades.

Charges filed in Carnahan health care forum fight

Three months after the punches were thrown, a prosecutor in St. Louis County has filed charges against six people in connection with fights outside a congressional forum on health care.

It happened outside a Russ Carnahan town hall meeting, on an August night when the national debate over health care reform was rising like a heat wave before a thunderstorm. Members of the Service Employees International Union clashed with members of the Tea Party.

Now, St. Louis County Counselor Patricia Redington has issued a total of ten charges spread out among six people.

Reached by phone after she left the office for the Thanksgiving holiday, Redington spoke from memory in general terms about the case.

Among those charged, two accused of assault in connection with the beating of Tea Party activist Kenneth Gladney. Gladney had claimed that two men wearing SEIU shirts attacked him as he sat at a table giving away tea party buttons.

Redington could not immediately provide the names of those charged, and she said she did not know whether those charged are members of SEIU.

State Worker Beat Up At SEIU Meeting

A state worker is recovering after a bloody brawl at a union hall. He says members of the local SEIU 1000 beat him up and sent him to the hospital all because he wanted to expose alleged corruption within the union.

Ken Hamidi is a state worker at the California Franchise Tax Board. Last night he walked into a union hall in Sacramento for an SEIU local 1000 meeting.

“We had every right to be here, very simple; it wasn’t anything private or anything exclusive,” said Hamidi.

But Hamidi says the union members did not want him there.

“Three, four people jumped at me, wrestled with me, then did all that,” said Hamidi. “I was covered in blood and then over to the emergency room.”

Controversial Overtime Rules Take Effect
By STEVEN GREENHOUSE
Published: August 23, 2004

The Bush administration’s new overtime rules go into effect today, but the Kerry campaign has already begun attacking the overhauled regulations, saying they will hurt millions of American workers.

Urging President Bush to scrap the rules, the Kerry campaign and organized labor say the regulations will exempt up to six million additional workers from receiving overtime pay by redefining which workers qualify for time-and-a-half pay when they work more than 40 hours. But the administration asserts that no more than 107,000 workers will lose their eligibility, while 1.3 million workers will gain the right to overtime.

In essence, the hundreds of pages of new rules redefine the criteria for which administrative, professional and managerial workers qualify for overtime, among them nurses, chefs, pharmacists, funeral directors, claims adjusters and restaurant managers.

Conservative Lawmakers Shaft Mine Safety

31 coal miners have died on job this year, compared with 22 deaths in all of 2005. The House is set to take up the Senate-passed mine safety bill, but conservative lawmakers are resisting inserting three amendments offered by Rep. George Miller (D-CA) that would strengthen workplace safety for miners:

– Require the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration to randomly check self-rescuer devices upon which miners’ lives depend in an emergency to ensure they are in working order;

– Provide that the air stored underground for trapped miners under the Senate legislation last for a minimum of 48 hours through a chamber or cache; and

– Provide that communication and tracking devices required under the Senate legislation be required in 15 months rather than the 3 years specified.

Labor Lobby Melee

Up to six busloads of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) organizers and members started a scrum inside the lobby of a hotel holding the Labor Notes Conference in Dearborn, Mich., on April 12. Labor Notes is a monthly progressive and union democracy journal. The SEIU group wanted to disrupt the banquet hall dinner where California Nurses Association (CNA) leaders, who SEIU accuses of busting an Ohio union drive, addressed 800 conference participants from various unions.

“They [SEIU protestors] were banging on the doors like a marching band base drum. Real quick they rushed through the door,” said Roland Day, a unionized dockworker from Baltimore.

In the lobby, Day said that he and dozens of other conference participants formed a human chain in the attempt to stop the SEIU rush, but ended up clashing with organizers Frank Hornick and Rachel Holland who were accompanied by a horde, hundreds thick, of purple t-shirt-clad SEIU protestors.

“I tried to stop the big guy and was holding him back with all I had,” Day said.

Hornick, the 6’4” son of miner, said he had worked on the three-year campaign to organize more than 8,000 healthcare workers at Ohio based Catholic Healthcare Partners (CHP) facilities. He explained how CNA organizers had descended on the campaign’s March 2008 culmination to encourage nurses and other workers to vote against affiliating with the SEIU. The election was cancelled before going to a vote. The CNA has begun to organize nurses nationally, competing with SEIU for members.

“Our intent was to educate the conference; they knew what we were there for,” Hornick said. Holland, a petit 5’4”, told The Indypendent she sustained hand cuts and was “football tackled” by a conference participant and that SEIU’s goal was to “draw to light union-busting by unions.”

Things quickly got out of control in the lobby, as fliers spilled to the floor and a cacophony of chants, noisemakers and screams ensued from the SEIU group’s push towards the banquet doors.

“SEIU should hold their head in shame. Some of their people had purple bandanas over their face like the anarchists at WTO protests,” said Frank Halstead, a California Teamster.

In the midst of the donnybrook, retired union member Dianne Feeley was shoved to the floor by a SEIU member and hit her head on a the end of a table requiring stitches.

“I don’t feel the person did it on purpose,” Feeley said. Feeley commented she didn’t think many in the SEIU crowd knew they were protesting at a labor solidarity conference.

A little more bad news for Stupak:

According to the National Catholic Reporter, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, a Washington-based advocacy group, sent a letter to members of Congress on Friday urging support for the Senate-passed health care bill and expressing its view that the bill contains sufficient provisions to prevent the use of federal money to pay for insurance coverage of abortions.

Indeed, there’s a lot of this going around.

Twenty-five evangelical and Catholic leaders wrote members of Congress March 11 urging them not to let a dispute over abortion derail passage of health-care reform.
Some pro-life Democrats have said they will vote against President Obama’s proposed overhaul of health care unless language restricting the use of federal dollars for abortion is strengthened.
The religious readers, however, said they believe the legislation not only maintains long-standing restrictions on federal funding of abortion, but also provides new support for vulnerable pregnant women that could actually reduce the number of abortions.
“As Christians committed to a consistent ethic of life and deeply concerned with the health and well-being of all people, we want to see health-care reform enacted,” the leaders said.

Semi-related: two good pieces on conservatism today as the politics of ressentiment.

yglesias.thinkprogress.org

trueslant.com

from the top one:

The central thing here isn’t the vanishing of truth as a criteria so much as it is the disappearance of any kind of meaningful political agenda at all. Instead there’s this love of Palin as a kind of martyr/tormentor figure who exists to drive liberals batty and be the subject of our putatively unfair persecution, with nonsensical defenses of her becoming all the more meritorious for the fact that they drive liberals even battier.

This is actually just what makes it so hard to take a lot of conservative opposition to the health care bill seriously. You get the sense that if President Mitt Romney were poised to sign a bill agreed to by Chuck Grassley and Max Baucus to provide tax credits to subsidize the purchase of private health insurance, while Bernie Sanders complained about the lack of public option that Palin fans would be hailing Romney—he may not be very conservative, but he sure knows how to make Jane Hamsher’s head explode!

He had refused to surrender when summoned to do so. Under the rules concerning forts, that made him liable to be killed out of hand. Actually, at one time that rule had extended to everyone within the fort, though by the time of the Alamo it had been updated to exclude women and children as liable to death.

The True Slant article is called, The Politics of Ressentiment. There’s a very good line from the Wiki entry on ressentiment:

The ego creates an enemy in order to insulate itself from culpability.

That whole paragraph in wiki is pretty great:

Ressentiment is a sense of resentment and hostility directed at that which one identifies as the cause of one’s frustration, an assignation of blame for one’s frustration. The sense of weakness or inferiority and perhaps jealousy in the face of the “cause” generates a rejecting/justifying value system, or morality, which attacks or denies the perceived source of one’s frustration. The ego creates an enemy in order to insulate itself from culpability.

I thought the Sanchez article in T/S was great. I didn’t realise he wrote there. One of his undergrad majors was philosophy, so he knows the deal.

re: #629 swamprat

They can mention bowie, but they want to leave out the “tejanos”. That is the “point”.
Bowie= “leader” and therefore worthy of mention.
Tejanos= zip

right..I’m looking at the total picture, picking and choosing…it really sucks

Evil trio alert!

Rose, since you’re having a conversation all by yourself over there (one post and three comments, all by you), let me point out what you’ve always been too thick to grasp: the line between sycophant and stalker is a fine one. Neither contributes anything to a blog discussion. The one just praises and expects pats on the head, while the other gets angry without proper care and attention. They can morph back and forth into each other. Which you have now done.

You would know that if you had more self-awareness and intellectual penetration than a stick of butter trying to carve itself into a knife…

Rose is an attention seeker. The only thing she seemed to post about here was herself - all her ‘battles with stalkers’ - ostensibly about defending LGF - were in the end just an attempt to create a ‘role’ for herself that was ‘important’. Anyone who happened to be getting more attention than she did became her ‘enemy’. And when her demands to have her ‘enemies’ banned from the site were ignored, she went into full meltdown mode.

re: #618 Obdicut

That the Tejanos weren’t ‘considered’ leaders seems kind of besides the historical point of their presence there.

What’s particularly galling about the omission isn’t just that.

José Antonio Navarro, who was one of the Tejanos that died, was also one of the three Tejanos that signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Ignoring him entirely is retarded.

This shouldn’t even be an issue. They were there. They died defending the Alamo. They should be recognized. Period.

Sadly, the Democrats around here suck. I have some small hope for Bill White, but my guess is that Perry will be in office until he retires or resigns. *sigh*

Bill White seems intelligent and honest, and therefore has no place in modern Texas politics.

All our energy problems would be solved if they’d somehow thought to bury Stephen F. Austin wrapped in copper and surrounded by magnets.

re: #631 Dark_Falcon

He had refused to surrender when summoned to do so. Under the rules concerning forts, that made him liable to be killed out of hand. Actually, at one time that rule had extended to everyone within the fort, though by the time of the Alamo it had been updated to exclude women and children as liable to death.

Santa Anna made his own rules…not sure I understand what you are getting at…he posted the red flag in the church bell tower…no prisoners…and it is widely excepted that there were indeed a few survivors, 8 or 12?…they were summarily executed as well….there was never any question of surrender

José Antonio Navarro, who was one of the Tejanos that died, was also one of the three Tejanos that signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

But he wasn’t a “leader”.

It is starting to become obvious that they really mean “Anglo”.

Once again Beck proves he is a moron:

I’ve changed my mind. Beck is indeed a constant source of entertainment.

Ha. The “Frank Says” Zappa quote widget is currently showing me:

Let’s just admit that public education is mediocre at best.

re: #521 Charles

That’s pretty sad. She’s actually whining about having her account blocked — after the kinds of things she’s been posting about me? What planet do these people live on, where they can say the most vicious things, send hate mail, accuse me publicly of all kinds of nastiness — and then expect me to leave their accounts open?

Pathetic.

Not only that, but her account of her issues with LGF makes no sense whatsoever. She is now trying to say that she only disagreed with a few bannings - yet on the strength of that she calls this site an ‘asylum’, and you ‘delusional’?

As I recall, the banning she was most upset about was that of bs monkey. Yep - that’s her idea of someone who ‘treated LGF with kindness and respect’. And she thinks of herself as a ‘moderate’ - what a joke.

Ain’t that the truth.

All our energy problems would be solved if they’d somehow thought to bury Stephen F. Austin wrapped in copper and surrounded by magnets.

Or if we used Rick Perry’s hair products and sleaze as energy sources. =P

Upding for having the brass balls to keep your Allah-piss avatar. The stalkers over at the BBC heart you, too!

Did it ever occur to you just to change the word to “Hamas” or somehin’?

I want one with the two guys pissing on each other. Not that I’m into that sort of thing, but I’ll call one ‘Mandy’ and the other ‘Cato’.

(My Photoshop skills are nil, so if anyone who wants to ‘steal’ the idea, you’re welcome to it.)
