Shocka! Ron Paul Doesn’t Win Poll!

Politics • Views: 2,604

Ron Paul’s legions of devoted followers are slipping. They used to be the champions of poll spamming. Mitt Romney Wins GOP Presidential Straw Poll.

NEW ORLEANS — By a single vote, Mitt Romney won the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership conference here Saturday in a victory that will be taken as a sign of the former Massachusetts governor’s strength as a 2012 presidential candidate. That’s because the 2008 GOP presidential hopeful elected to skip the conference to continue his book tour.

Romney just triumphed over Ron Paul, who took second place, 439 votes to 438. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich essentially tied for third with 18 percent of the vote each.

Mitt Romney didn’t even speak at this Conference — he was on a book tour. Has the Romney machine coopted the Paulian poll spamming technique?

I'd like to hope that this is more than the last hopeless thrashing of drowning sanity within the Republican Party....

I mean Mitt Romney is the sanest guy they have running at the moment isn't he?

Maybe they actually want to win the next presidential election?

One vote... Paul's Kingdom - just one vote shy of another victory.

Perhaps the Paulians ought to plant a Victory Garden with their NON-HYBRID SEEDS?

Just an FYI, Romney is know to buy these straw polls. He usually wins at CPAC--which is not known as a moderate gathering.

Wait... I didn't even realize Huckabee was in the poll at first. Did he do something to piss people off lately?

Releasing a guy from jail who went on to murder some more people might have done it...

The article states that Mitt's group bought 200 tickets for him, and Ron Paul's group paid for 600 discounted tickets for their supporters.

He is indeed. I'm going to take this as good news and leave it at that.

The blogoshpere reaction doesn't indicate much support for Mitt. He's the architect of Obamacare and there's no way the Tea Party base or Fox news are going to support him.

no way Fox news are going to support him.

I think what gave it away was that he doesn't have his own show.............

I heard several "heresy" reports that Romney supporters were paying peoples way to this conference, or at least paying for the tickets as long as they agreed to vote for Romney in this poll. Considering that I first heard about this two days ago it isn't just a "sour grapes" campaign by the Luap Nor supporters, they couldn't have known.

I'll wait for more info obviously and first hand reports, just saying I kinda have doubts about this being anything like an "honest" vote.

I'm going ahead and pre-emptively not support Mitt, since there is an outside chance he has a boyfriend somewhere...all these politicians are alike

Click on the link to the article. He paid for 200 tickets. Ron Paul's group subsidized 600 tickets.

Still, the grassroots is not the only thing when it comes to presidential elections. The "Invisible Primary" of fund-raising and gaining elite support matters as well and Romney likely has the inside track on that.

Mitt's pretty good about Spamming my email address.
I get a monthly newsletter, and some other thing quarterly.
Yes, I sent him $10 for the last election.
I still like him.

You know, ironically, the first place I saw you-must-buy-insurance was at BYU.

They were having problems with people running up medical bills, and then having to drop back to part-time to get a job to pay for those bills. This lead to people taking years to graduate, and BYU has too many kids that want to attend there to have slots taken up for 8 years. Hence, enforced insurance.

(Because of the high level of married students, the parents' insurance cover a smaller percentage of students than at other schools.)

I'll repeat my take on this from the Mockton thread, with additional elaboration bolded (as per NJhockeyfan's point):

He's still the only potential 2012 GOP candidate (with the possible exception of Newt) that I would feel comfortable about having control of our nuclear weapons codes. Not that this makes up for him being a Blatantly Obvious flip-flopping, pandering, phony. He's certainly worse than most politicians in this fault. How do you hide all his reversals of policy in the face of the GOP nomination process? At least someone like Huckabee isn't lying when they say they oppose gay rights and universal healthcare. Romney was all for these things before he was against them.

Which isn't even 100% true. I'm fairly sure the Massachusetts legislature had some input on the matter.

Won by 1 vote? I call shenanigans. Sounds more like they didnt want Ron winning like he did at CPAC. They dont want the media going on and on about a candidate that has no chance of getting the nod. Hell, even Fox tried to discount the CPAC poll. Any bets on if they tout this one up?

22 _RememberTonyC  Sat, Apr 10, 2010 7:00:28pm

I like Romney. I would like to think he is trying to distance himself from the crazies and that is why he chose not to show up.

23 sandbox  Sat, Apr 10, 2010 7:15:25pm

I like Romney too. Ron Paul annoys me, he may go third party in 2012.
