Ron Paul Springs to Son’s Defense

Politics • Views: 2,971

Not surprising, since Ron’s views on the Civil Rights Act are (at least publicly) even more extreme than Rand’s: Ron Paul Rises to Son’s Defense in Civil Rights Dust-Up.

It’s a conspiracy by the left, of course. Default wingnut response to setbacks.

Rep. Ron Paul said Thursday the criticism of his son Rand Paul’s comments regarding the 1964 Civil Rights Act is “unfair” and dismissed the fracas as an attempt by the left to hurt his son’s Senate campaign.

“I think it’s contrived because he’s done so well and the left has to knock him down,” the Texas Republican said.

Rand Paul, the GOP nominee in the Kentucky Senate race, ignited a political firestorm this week by suggesting he disagrees with the landmark civil rights law’s prohibition on segregation at privately owned facilities open to the public.

It’s not fair,” Ron Paul said, adding that as a parent it was hard to see his son pilloried on the national stage and to see his libertarian views characterized as racist.

I agree, it’s not fair. Especially when you consider that Ron Paul got all the way to the Presidential primary without the media noticing his extreme views on little things like civil rights, or his connections to the John Birch Society, etc, etc, ad nauseam. It’s really not fair that his son gets the third degree before he does.

Ron’s feeling pretty cocky these days, though, because he knows his GOP star is ascendant.

Ron Paul, who ran for president in 2008, dismissed the notion that Rand Paul’s controversial comments would cost him votes in the general election.

“My views tend to be controversial and my support continues to grow,” he said.

Heh. The lefties rejoice.

You have to give Rand Paul credit for one thing, unlike his father, he didn't have Lew Rockwell ghost writing racist and anti-Semitic newsletters

I agree with Rand Paul.

Restaurants should be able to discriminate....

Provided that they are not aided by the federal government in any way.

So just as soon as a restaurant opens that does not use federal roads (or state, if the state isn't inclined to allow it), rely on government assistance for security (i.e. police), use public currency (which requires relying on the stability of the US economy), or get food items from subsidized farmers, they can discriminate.

No one in American political life can possibly expect any sympathy for the whine that "it's not fair"...I mean, come on, how lame is that?

Nor and Dnar are whingin' bints.

Okay...it's been two days...where's Sarah Palin's big statement of victory from Tuesday? Huh? Someone take the feed-bag off her head and let her speak. Inquiring minds want to know where she stands on Civil Rights (Why, that was the year I was born!)

10 recusancy  Thu, May 20, 2010 5:59:07pm

DougJ, over at Balloon Juice, has a very good post about Rand and not caring whether he personally is a racist because you'll lose that battle.

Once things become personal, Republicans can wriggle off the hook. It’s just too easy to trot out black friends or at least stories about black friends and say “see, Rand Paul is not a racist, next question.” The last 40 years of American politics haven’t been destroyed by a bunch of dumb, racist crackers, they’ve been destroyed by cynical conservatives who were all too willing to manipulate dumb, racist crackers for political gain.

Here's a comment she made that I agree with:

"For years, I've felt that the relationship between Ron Paul supporters and establishment conservatism is one of the most interesting, relatively unexplored dynamics in modern U.S. politics," Maddow continued. "I intend to keep covering it, and I hope that Rand Paul and Congressman Ron Paul and members of the movement they've inspired will continue to be willing to participate in the conversation."

22 Cato the Elder  Thu, May 20, 2010 6:05:10pm

Reposted, this time as a challenge. Won't some Lizard with mad video skillz give it a try?

I honestly don't see how Paul fils can win, when all his opponent needs to do is pull a few honest-to-God Luap supporters' rants off of YouTube, excerpt them in a string of five- to ten-second clips, and show them after an image of Rand Paul sitting in a Fox News studio without his pants on while a doomy voice intones, "This is what Rand Paul and his father's supporters believe."

Supporter Number 1: "Yeah, like, I first heard about his dad when I was a sophomore, dude, and he wants to make pot legal, so he's got my vote..."

Supporter Number 2: "Abortion is wrong under any circumstances, and Rand Paul will make it illegal..."

Supporter Number 3: "No one has the right to tell me I have to serve n***ers in my lunchroom..."

Supporter Number 4: "Gold! Gold! Gold!..."

Close with an image of the American flag with the doomy voiceover saying, "Sane Americans disagree."

Problem go 'way.

Please?

Too much of the "right" (or "true conservatives" as the like to call themselves) have enveloped their xenophobia/racism in so much psuedo-intellectual chatter (e.g., Luap Dnar) that their consciences don't have to worry about being challenged.

I guess I'm trying to think of any candidate or intellectual leader whose ideas were benign, but who for some reason became the figurehead or preferred philosopher of truly despicable people, and right now my head is too clogged to immediately think of some examples.

The problem with libertarian fundamentalism is that it is merely a mental escape from facing the real problems in the real world.

Even if someone who voted against the CRA had the best intentions in their own mind, in the real world it took a governing policy that translated into the force of law in order to stop the wrong.

Um, the left isn't knocking your son down numb nuts. He's knocking himself down. Yeah yeah, it sucks that Maddow, NPR and the Courier-Journal committed journalism instead of playing softball. Maybe your son should have thought about that possibility and just stuck with talk radio and Fock Snooze to spew his shit. Like Saint Reagan said, "Facts are stupid things."

I've been struggling lately with the idea that it's fair to repudiate someone because of the scum that celebrate him or his ideas. Obviously, there are many, many reasons to dismiss the Pauls other than the vermin that follow them. I'm just thinking about it from a purely intellectual standpoint - wondering if it's sufficient argument to simply say, 'these scum cheer for this man'.

I guess I'm trying to think of any candidate or intellectual leader whose ideas were benign, but who for some reason became the figurehead or preferred philosopher of truly despicable people, and right now my head is too clogged to immediately think of some examples.

if i may suggest a difference: if i were running for something, and heard that Stormfront or someone of their ilk were cheering me on, i'd be in front of a podium denouncing them faster than a rat on a cheeto.

it's not the preference of despicable people, IMHO...it's the open arms with which their preference is received.

Holy hell and damnation!

The UNSOURCED and UNLIKELY claim that the West Memphis police killers were Mexican illegals has gone totally viral in the wingnut-o-sphere.

"Lets see what the Mexican President and Traitor Obama have to say about our Law enforcment officers being killed by illegal immigrants? Crickets."

"Are the Democrats going to applaud this too?"

"Oy, now the law suits from the perps. As illegal aliens their rights were violated."

"He would probably say the police acted stupidly in spanish."

"Yeah, the rest of the country will find out how many good officers you lose when nobody enforces the immigration laws. I can’t even count the number we have lost here in Phoenix."

"It’s heartbreaking.hey, Calderon—these thugs were “your people.” Please keep the rest of them HOME—in Mexico!"

All of this appears to be based on a single post by one person who said he was listening on his scanner and heard police say they were looking for a suspect who might be Hispanic on foot near the shooting scene. That report, like many made in the heat of the moment, was later determined to be false, since both shooters were killed in the van at the Wal-Mart. After a few hours, we have gone from that to Santa Ana's army battering down the gates.

One wonders - if the State of Louisiana were to sponsor a way to collect all that oil and sell it to recoup the costs of the disaster. I mean, once it's out and all over the Gulf, surely BP no longer has the rights to it.

My tadpole situation probably isn't as bad as I thought it was last night. They're still in their little protected area. Not sure how many of the original 20 are still alive but I've noticed that they hide in the plants and under rocks when it gets cold. I ran out this afternoon to hold a tarp over them in a hail storm. The weather should warm up next week and I'll know how many made it.

"I can still recall old Mister Barnslow getting out every morning and nailing a fresh load of tadpoles to the old board of his. Then he'd spin it round and round, like a wheel of fortune, and no matter where it stopped he'd yell out, 'Tadpoles! Tadpoles is a winner!' We all thought he was crazy. But then, we had some growing up to do." - Jack Handey

OK Everyone -

HERE IS - HOW IT IS - Rand Paul will be the David Duke of Kentucky Politics -
Unless and Until He Gets His ACT Together, VERY RAPIDLY. As of Today I wish Kentuckians had Voted for "RU-PAUL."
Sen. Barry Goldwater saw the error of his ways as regards the 1964 Civil Rights Act in his later years. Rand - NOT SO MUCH - YET!!
A Human Being - THE RACE, that I admitted to on my Census 2010 Form, CAN NOT chose his/her Parents. Some of us are "Pink" - Some "Black" - as in REALLY DARK BROWN, Variations in Between, "Yellow" - "Red" and variations between "Pink" - "Black" - "Yellow" - "Brown" - and "Red." ALL of "us'all" in the "T.R." sense of the word - ARE AMERICANS - Rightly and By Right SO.
As so MANY OTHER THINGS - it revolves around the "Commerce Clause." Basically, one cannot pick their customers by parentage and PRETEND to be OPEN to the PUBLIC. That POOP ALMOST went out in the 1870's - and But For Plessy v. Ferguson WOULD HAVE!
If "The RAND" hasn't absorbed this - Get a "Scoop Jacksonian" Democrat to run against him - and I will contribute to him/her. RAND! Get with the Program - De Jure SEGREGATION - is OVER - Like in O, V, E, R! - Has Been for about the Last 50 YEARS!

He gets a police scanner and hears these two guys arguing over like "Its not a code 329 if he's wearing a codpiece" and then when he's dating a cop and he's going for a ride along with her, and they're listening and they hear the same two guys arguing the above statement leading to Drew making the second quoted quip....

Obama upstaged by rodent, experts consulted

In the midst of his battle with the titans of Wall Street, President Barack Obama was nearly upstaged by a rodent. Obama had just begun a Rose Garden statement lauding the end of a Senate filibuster on his financial overhaul when some kind of rodent dashed out of the bushes to his right, just outside the Oval Office.

As photographers snapped away in the sun-drenched garden, the critter scurried straight past the gray podium with the presidential seal and made a bee-line for another set of bushes to Obama's left.

It's not clear if the president could even see the streaker, but he didn't show any reaction. And he concluded his statement minutes later, returning to his office without answering a few shouted questions on other topics.

Once he was safely inside the Oval Office, a fierce debate erupted among the photographers and reporters who'd witnessed the dash. Was it a rat or a mouse? Or maybe a mole, or some other kind of related creature.

Before long, experts had joined the fray.

''I would partially rule out rat,'' said Russell Link, a wildlife biologist who works for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. ''That's due to the lack of a tail that is typically equal to body length.''

After viewing a photograph of the surprising scurry, Link said, ''My suspicion is it's a vole, commonly called a 'meadow mouse' out our way.''

In fact, this wasn't the first time a rodent's been spied in the White House, or even the Rose Garden.

Just last week, as camera crews set up for an Obama statement on the Gulf oil spill, what's believed to have been the same rodent made a dash across the famous garden.
.......................
Moreover, rodents of all kinds are pretty common in Washington.

Well, obviously.

How sad...

Gulf oil spill: Flow was underestimated

BP said Thursday that it is collecting 5,000 barrels of oil a day from one of the leaking pipes in the Deepwater Horizon disaster, a statement that proves the spill is larger than the publicly released government and company estimate. The total flow had consistently been pegged at 5,000 barrels a day.

But since oil continues to pour into the ocean despite the capture of that same amount by a tube inserted into the leaking riser pipe, those estimates are clearly too low. “Now we’re reporting up to 5,000 barrels of oil and up to 15 million cubic feet of gas a day” are being sucked from the pipe into a ship, said BP spokesman Mark Proegler. “There’s still oil leaking there. We’re not saying otherwise.”

After BP released a video of the gushing leak last week, independent scientists estimated the flow of oil could be 14 times greater than the 5,000 barrel figure. “From the beginning we’ve been working with the [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] and the Coast Guard, and they are the source, using visual observations, of the size of the leak,” Proegler said. “We have asserted that there’s no way of accurately measuring from the end of the flow pipe. Others are taking issue with that, and that’s fine.”

Pressured by members of Congress, BP on Thursday also released a live video feed of the leak. "What you see are real-time images of a real world disaster unfolding 5,000 feet below the surface of the gulf," said Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) at a Capitol Hill news conference announcing "spillcam," the live feed now available on both House and Senate websites.

All in bright red.

Something definitely to look out for. Could be used for great good or bad. What happens when we create something synthetic enough that there is no other organism that keeps it in check? Most life is so similar, that when populations get out of balance, over time populations adapt and can keep things more or less in check. Some fear the "gray goo" scenario with nanotechnology. I think this has more "gray goo" potential.

I'm sure the notion of artificial life scares them to no end for many reasons. As we get more information from experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider and research into the Higgs boson particle they'll be speechless.

Of course even after we do gather more scientific evidence on the origins of life there will still be the McLeroy's of the world demanding that Bronze Age mythology be given equal footing in science classes.

Red meat for the science Luddites.

I thought the angle may have been to rile up the creationists.

Just got a phone call from some conservative group called "Citizens United" asking me to take a one-question survey regarding Barack Obama...but first, I needed to listen to a recorded message from their leader who was pitching his new book, "2010 - Take Back Our Country" or something like that. Stupid fuck used 'death panels' as an example of the 'socialist programs' from our president. When I finally got a live operator back I asked her, "Death panels? Seriously?" and she said, "Yes, there are death panels in President Obama's health care bill and they will decide what medical care you get." I told her that health insurance and death panels weren't the same thing, and that it was also about protecting her when she loses that shitty job. She answered by saying her husband worked and she was on his insurance. So I said, "Yes, and if he loses his job it will protect him too. This is about you, not about death panels...that's just something Sarah Palin made up because she's too stupid to understand legislation for what it is." Then I said I couldn't believe they were stupid enough to think that I'm a conservative. Then she thanked me for my time.

As I've written several times, in an attempt (no matter how futile) to fill in for SJ:

It is Kentucky, after all, home of the Creation Museum.

In defense of my Old Kentucky Home, the GOP has frequently nominated extremists who have been trounced in the general elections. Jack Conway is telegenic, smart and came from way behind Dan Mongiardo to win the primary. There are 60% more registered Democrats than Republicans in Kentucky, and while they are conservative Democrats, they're not crazy. That Rasmussen poll, six months before election day, is meaningless-Conway was nearly that far behind Dan Mongiardo in the early polling for the Democratic primary.

Ok. I've been thinking about this for about an hour but I'm no constitutional scholar so help me out.

How is the civil rights act in any way unconstitutional? Even to a strict reading of the 14th amendment, you enjoy equal protection under the law. So discrimination on creed, color, or sex is verboten by the government. Jim crow, mandated segregation, all of it, completely unconstitutional. The federal government makes a law that seeks to enforce the 14th amendment to the constitution by superseding state law. It also prohibits the private enterprise, open to the general public, from discriminating based on race. Since, obviously, the police would have to be called to enforce discrimination in the case of an altercation, which would be in direct violation of the 14th amendment. Still completely constitutional, right?

Private business not open the public, including Rand's country club, are free to discriminate based on color, since they aren't open to the public, and instead are private clubs with members, and any club may discriminate based on whatever criteria they would like. Since the police would only be summoned to remove the non-member, not necessarily the black non-member.

Are there any libertarians left here? Where is the error in my non-constitutional lawerly reasoning.

Northern Mexico shootouts kill 2 police, 7 gunmen

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Mexico (AP) - Gunbattles between security forces and armed attackers have killed nine people in two states along the U.S. border, Mexican authorities said Thursday.

The Navy says four attackers died in a gunbattle between marines and members of the Zetas drug gang in the town of San Carlos, in the border state of Tamaulipas. The Navy said in a press statement that a convoy of vehicles opened fire on a marine patrol.

Marines detained four suspected gunmen - three of them Guatemalan citizens - and seized 14 rifles and over 3,600 weapons after the clash.

And in the state of Coahuila, two police officers and three gunmen are dead in a shootout in Torreon, prosecutors said.

Yeah, but that article says that started in 2007. Looks to me like part of a continuing trend with some slight upward movement.

It has been trending that way. Medicare reimbursements are not keeping up with doctors' costs. Cutting them recently only puts more pressure on the doctors.

Yep, this is from the article:

The growth in Texas Medicare opt-outs began in earnest in 2007, when 70 doctors notified Trailblazer Health Enterprises, the state's Medicare carrier, they would no longer participate, up from seven in 2006. The numbers jumped to 151 in 2008, fell back to 135 in 2009 and are on pace for 200 in 2010. From 1998 to 2002, by contrast, no more than three a year opted out.

I'd say "fix it!" but this being the USA and all. That would mean cranking up another Chinese fire drill where nothing gets done.

Problem is, it's expensive to give good health care, and nobody wants to settle for less than the best in care. I don't see the costs being addressed until we're in the same position Greece is. Considering our budget situation, we may not have to wait too long for that.

Um, if you are in the uncontrolled anarchic/free enterprise camp, yes. If you believe it was legitimate for Goldman Sachs to sell derivatives for huge profits to gullible Employee Retirement Funds when they were shorting the same instruments because they knew they were going down the shitter, then yes. Virginia executes inmate who killed 2 men

JARRATT, Va. (AP) - A Virginia inmate who killed two Richmond men in separate shootings has been executed.

Thirty-seven-year-old Darick Demorris Walker died by injection at 9:24 p.m. Thursday at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt.

Walker was convicted of killing Stanley Beale in 1996 and Clarence Elwood Threat in 1997. Virginia law allows the death penalty for anyone who commits two premeditated murders within three years.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to block Walker's execution Thursday, days after Gov. Bob McDonnell said he found no compelling reason to commute the sentence to life.

Walker was the 107th inmate put to death in Virginia since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976. Only Texas has executed more prisoners.

Lesson: Don't commit murder in Virginia.

NASA's MISR Provides Unique Views of Gulf Oil Slick

These unique images of the Deepwater Horizon oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico were obtained by the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument aboard NASA's Terra spacecraft on May 17, 2010, at around 16:40 UTC (11:40 a.m. CDT). The top panel is a false-color image created by combining data from the red band of the 26-degree forward-viewing camera (where the oil appears dark) with the blue and green bands of the nadir (vertical-viewing) camera (where the oil appears bright). The result causes the oil spill to stand out dramatically in shades of cyan, while other features like clouds and land appear close to their natural color. The Mississippi River Delta is visible in the upper left portion of the image. The red symbol represents the former location of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform. The image dimensions are 346 by 258 kilometers (215 by 160 miles), and north is toward the top of the image.

Cool medical fact: We are all born with two heart defects that allow our hearts to work and blood to circulate before we are born without the lungs being involved. When you take your first breath, those defects aren't needed and they repair themselves!

The Foramen Ovale is one of these defects, ("Patent" means "open" hence PFO when one occurs) a very small hole between the upper chambers of the heart. It's really just two overlapping flaps of tissue, and after birth the flaps are supposed to lay flat and then the tissue grows together. Sometime that doesn't happen, and there's your PFO.

8 times out of 10 you never even know you have it. Sometimes they find it by accident and you get it fixed. But occasionally - very occasionally - it can generate a blood clot. Then there can be trouble.

Report: Airport watchers miss 16 linked to terror

WASHINGTON (AP) - At least 16 people later linked to terror plots passed through U.S. airports undetected by federal officials who were on duty to spot suspicious behavior, according to a government report.

The airport-based officials were part of a federal behavior detection program designed to spot potential terrorists and others who pose a threat to aviation. The program, started in 2003, is one of 20 layers built into the nation's aviation security system.

The Government Accountability Office questioned the scientific basis of the entire program in a report released Thursday. The program is dubbed SPOT - Screening Passengers by Observation Techniques. It was instituted by the Transportation Security Administration "without first validating the scientific basis for identifying passengers in an airport environment," the GAO said.

Well, more accurately, a PFO allows passage of blood (and clots) from right to left in the heart without going through the pulmonary system. Which means that a patient with a clotting predisposition, such as, say, a guy who's been in hospital following a subarachnoid haemorrhage who would have been put on prothrombic medication to stop his bleeding, could then develop a peripheral venous clot like a DVT. And while this would normally go up and into the right heart and then into the lungs to make a pulmonary embolism (which is very bad), someone with a PFO can have that clot pass through the hole into the left heart, where it goes to the general system and ends up causing a stroke or MI.

FACT CHECK: Tax cut math doesn't add up for some

WASHINGTON – Zach Hoffman was confident his small business would qualify for a new tax cut in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law.

But when he ran the numbers, Hoffman discovered that his office furniture company wouldn't get any assistance with the $79,200 it pays annually in premiums for its 24 employees. "It leaves you with this feeling of a bait-and-switch," he said.

When the administration unveiled the small business tax credit earlier this week, officials touted its "broad eligibility" for companies with fewer than 25 workers and average annual wages under $50,000 that provide health coverage. Hoffman's workers earn an average of $35,000 a year, which makes it all the more difficult to understand why his company didn't qualify.

Lost in the fine print: The credit drops off sharply once a company gets above 10 workers and $25,000 average annual wages.

It's an example of how the early provisions of the health care law can create winners and losers among groups lawmakers intended to help — people with health problems, families with young adult children and small businesses. Because of the law's complexity, not everyone in a broadly similar situation will benefit.

Hope & Change = Bait & Switch

And there's the key - the lungs don't get a chance to intercept any clots coming off of a PFO. They head straight into the body.

Does anyone happen to have a hypothesis (no matter how skeletal) or even a vaguely penciled-in rant to explain the phenomenon whereby fervent Palinites, Paulians, et al insist that the only reason anyone would criticize or oppose them in any way is because the would-be critics are all a-tremble in pants-shitting mortal fear?

I mean, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard some neckstump say, "hurr hurr, them libs are just scared to death of Sarah Palin", I would have quite a few nickles. I admit, I am slightly scared of Sarah Palin, primarily because she seems to have a disconcertingly large following despite the fact that her speech patterns are not terribly unlike what you get if you use Google Translate and mutate English into Cantonese, then to Spanish, then back to English again.

But some people seem to think that Palin, Beck, Paul, etc. emanate supernatural, inescapable waves of TROOF that are just so blindingly pure that detractors dare not look directly into it, lest their faces be melted like the Nazis in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

What's the deal, anyway? If Mattlock was still in wide syndication, would we be having this discussion?

re: #374 austin_blue

Do you really believe that those GS actions are legitimate? Or are you just being contrary to point out the immorality of the banks? If so, I can respect that.

Of course they are legitimate, they were in fact prudent.

If a bank takes on, say $100 million of risk in mortgage backed securities, in return for a percentage yield, they must then decide how much of that $100 million they want to insure with default swaps, which are a type of insurance.

The prudent banker (or fund manager) is hedged, and essentially market neutral picking up a small return. The gambling banker is going to go for the maximum return and forgo the insurance. In a normal year, the gambling banker makes more money, but he gets wiped out when there is a default event.

In this case, GS made a sensible decision and modified it according to the market conditions, they survived while the less prudent went bankrupt.

Look at the Lehmans case, when the net net was calculated, most of the banks with exposure were essentially even, having properly hedged their risk. Only a small bit of the final amount was a direct loss, most parties lost an equal amount that they gained.

There's no trap or conspiracy on the left. Rand is simply being asked why he can't say "yes" to a simple question when every other member of Congress (except his father) can say "yes."

Even Robert Byrd, who voted against the 1964 Act, gets a partial pass because he voted FOR the 1968 Civil Rights Act, which was an extension of the original.

I don't think either Paul is necessarily a racist. They are just so wedded to their ideology of property rights that they won't let a little thing like human rights get in the way.

By a vote of 59-39 tonight, the Senate passed sweeping legislation to tighten the rules governing the U.S. financial system.

Four Republicans -- Sens. Scott Brown (R-MA), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Susan Collins (R-ME) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) -- joined with all but two Democrats(...) In the weeks ahead, House and Senate negotiators will meet in a formal conference committee to iron out the differences between this package, and the broadly similar bill the House adopted late last year. The Senate is expected to name their negotiators on Monday.

North Korea, for its part, spoke of war for a second straight day, while U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was on the way to the region and tensions on the Korean peninsula were expected to dominate her agenda.

I don't know what to tell you here, or what you were "sold". I doubt most people were sold on, or even aware, of the values of subsidies for specific income brackets.

More to the point, more generous subsidies would translate into a more expensive bill - something like the House version of the bill instead of the final bill (mostly written by the Senate) . And guess who opposed that...

The financial system did not "collapse" it had what is called a crash but is actually a pull-back to earlier levels. The market reaction was secondary to the actual defaults, and many times their dollar amount.

A better question is, why are you OK with the mutual fund/pension fund industry which suffered trillions of dollars in losses for its investors? An amount far greater than any banks lost on the swaps? Exactly what they did wrong is they didn't buy any insurance on their massive stock positions. Now Goldman Sacks did the sensible thing in buying insurance and you are angry with them for surviving.

DeMint's Twitter from 5/18:
Congratulations to @DrRandPaul! His message of less spending and less debt is resonating with voters across Kentucky.

hahahahahahaha

This is interesting:

Federal Tax Burdens and Expenditures: Kentucky is a Beneficiary State Kentucky taxpayers receive more federal funding per dollar of federal taxes paid than the average state. Per dollar of federal tax collected in 2005, Kentucky citizens received approximately $1.51 in the way of federal spending. This ranks the state 9th highest nationally and represents a rise from 1995 when Kentucky received $1.28 per dollar of taxes in federal spending (ranked 13th nationally). Neighboring states and the federal spending received per dollar of federal taxes collected were: Illinois ($0.75), Indiana ($1.05), Ohio ($1.05), West Virginia ($1.76), Virginia ($1.51), Tennessee ($1.27), and Missouri ($1.32).

Kentucky is a beneficiary state. That means they get more in Federal funding than the Federal government generate in tax revenues.

The RoK investigators have concluded it was a Nork-made torpedo. The South has officially blamed the North. This could get very ugly, very quickly. Hopefully, Hillary has some good ideas how to resolve this.

I feel bad I've never owned a cookbook nor contributed a single recipe. So, by way of penance, I'm going to buy my first cook-book - the LGF one - and post the recipe to tonight's dinner at the secret bat cave.

* * * *
Bagua's Bangers:

Place three Italian sausages in a frying pan with olive oil and fry covered until a while.

Put mushrooms and butter in a pot and simmer at the same time.

When everything looks over cooked, combine mushrooms and bangers in fry pan and cover with slices of Swiss and extra-sharp Cheddar cheese.

Get distracted writing a long post to AbuSteve and, when you smell and see the smoke, rush into the kitchen to save your dinner. Your dinner is now ready!

Well, I don't know about coke. Coke is famous for turning people into assholes while using. The point is that he was a party boy so he shouldn't be calling Scott Brown's daughter a slut when he was probably a slut himself.

This is why I drink Pepsi.

You know, I'm going to go farther than that. No pundit has any business calling a politician's relative a slut. None of his damn business what Miss Brown does, or with whom she does it. Unless it takes on a legitimate public aspect in some way, stay away from it.

re: #530 Bagua

I feel bad I've never owned a cookbook nor contributed a single recipe. So, by way of penance, I'm going to buy my first cook-book - the LGF one - and post the recipe to tonight's dinner at the secret bat cave.

* * * *

Delicious.

I grabbed it, e-mailed it to myself and will keep in a Volume 3 folder, just in case.

my brother's GF just gave me a bottle of Tabasco. 1/8 OZ. Cool.

This stuff is indescribably good.

[Link: www.spiceplace.com...]

The price in that link is ridiculous, however. It's $1 or less per 12oz bottle at every outlet in my area (DFW).

It has a sort of tart flavor, with a slow, citrusy habanero-type burn. Not bad at all for less than $1 per bottle.

I know. I'll give everyone in the family the benefit of the doubt regarding that. I'm sure there was a large measure of trust like there is with all families. That trust was broken when he turned around and used the information he gained through that bond of trust to hit the talk show circuit and make money. That's not very ethical IMO.

Iran allows temporary family reunion for U.S. hikers jailed for 'spying' after mothers beg in Muslim dress

Dressed in black Islamic headscarves and long traditional robes, these three Americans pass for any Muslim woman going about everyday life in Iran.

But unlike their local counterparts, Laura Fattal, Nora Shourd, and Cindy Hickey are desperate to secure the release of their three children, who were arrested by Iranian authorities ten months ago for alleged spying.

Strange ad for a roomate.

$850 Looking for new Roommate

I have a bedroom (12 x 14ft) available starting on June 1st (1 year lease) for a male or female roommate. My previous roommate just moved out since his work (for the federal government) took him to another city. We'll be sharing a bathroom, kitchen, and living room. The apartment is spacious and well lit by natural light.

A little about myself:

I work at the Department of Defense as a researcher and I'm also pursuing a Master's Degree at Georgetown. I really enjoy reading, hiking, playing kickball with my friends, and drinking good beer :) I go out a lot on the weekends but once in a while I stay home and just watch a movie. If you're interested please contact me by email and tell me a little about yourself.

One more thing, please read this so we don't waste each others' time! On our bathroom door is a checklist. I like to keep a record of my bowel movements and I expect you to do the same. It's a just a simple checklist with each day of the month, simply place a check on the day if you have a bowel movement. It's no big deal and you needn't worry about replacing the list, I'll take care of everything. Hope to hear from you!

Yeah, he's gonna get a lot of responses.

Here's what I said:
"Between Scott Brown's voting record and Glenn Beck practically calling his daughter a slut..." - witch refers to Glenn Beck going apeshit over "Ayla is available" comment.

When commenters took this a bit too literally for comfort, I clarified what I meant and posted Beck's video.

So watch the video, make up your own mind, and quit bitching.

Ron’s feeling pretty cocky these days, though, because he knows his GOP star is ascendant.

The GOP is all about putting lipstick on a pig these days. No one too crazy, too stupid, too radical, too hateful - it's the big tent of crazy. I keep waiting for a closeted gay Grand Wizard that runs a bible camp that screwed one of Tiger's mistresses to run on the GOP ticket, and I the tragic thing is - I may not have to wait much longer.

These people make Obama look like a conservative. I wonder if they see the irony in that.

re: #279 dugmartsch

Ok. I've been thinking about this for about an hour but I'm no constitutional scholar so help me out.

How is the civil rights act in any way unconstitutional? ((snipped))

Are there any libertarians left here? Where is the error in my non-constitutional lawerly reasoning.

To play devil's advocate, the theory would be that private property is private, period. That businesses can declare themselves open, not to the public, but to such fractions of the public as they may specify. That a business, being the property of the owner or owners, can conduct business with anyone it likes and refuse business to anyone else.

Suppose, for instance, e-harmony knows a whole lot about heterosexual couples, what works, what doesn't. They've built this expertise over a long time, and they've got their questions and it's all validated. They're in a position to promise you, a hetero looking for another hetero, fairly good odds if you're reasonably eligible. They don't know anything about gay marriage. They don't have the experts, they don't have validated questions, and they'd really rather not ruin their reputation by being forced to suggest matches in which they cannot possibly have any grounds for confidence.

But under the civil rights law, as it is written and enforced, they must make up questions, sort answers, and attempt to match up gays looking for a gay spouse. When they fail, as fail they must, they can be sued for discrimination, because they don't do as good a job with gay matches. And those failures must be folded into their stats, where they down-ding their ratings.

The thing about constitutional reasoning is that it knows no limits of plausibility or common sense. Once the law takes effect, it takes effect without any exceptions whatever. Constitutional reasoning is all or nothing. Too bad for e-harmony.

The liberal view of the law is that don't be silly, nothing ridiculous will ever be enforced. Trust us, there are no constitutional limits anywhere, Congress can write any law it likes on any matter and that's that. There's no such thing as unconstitutional in an abstract sense. The only thing that's unconstitutional is measures that the SC doesn't LIKE.

And under that view, indeed, no law can possibly be unconstitutional if it's passed by a Congress which leans left.

On the other hand, if the constitution itself, as written, is an absolute constraint on the power of Congress, then other parts of the Constitution become themselves unconstitutional. Long honored forms of spending, such as the National Science Foundation, cannot be permitted. In fact, the Constitution won't stand up under this kind of theoretical scrutiny. The whole thing is self-contradictory if pure logic, without any admixture of common sense or deep-seated wisdom, is the only standard.

Too bad for e-harmony, but that's one overshoot of a basically sensible application of Congress' power. How, after all, can a man go about any part of succeeding in life if he can't eat in restaurants, ride in buses or planes, stay in motels? It's a blockade on his life chances. There's other ways to strangle a man than with a noose, and economic lynching just has to be something that Congress can outlaw.

Has anyone happens to have a hypothesis (no matter how skeletal) or have even a vague pencil explain to rant in the phenomenon that there are glowing Palinites, Paulians, et al that the only reason to criticize someone or reject it would in any way, because the would-be critics are trembling in pants-shitting fear of death?
