BP oil spill
Top hat idea is all wrong.
You are not going to stop that pressure and volume, nor should you even try.
pull away all the stuff on the TopHat, but leave it sitting there like a diffuser.
Giant (50 feet?) dome or cylinder with many 4inch flex hoses coming out of it with quick-connect couplings on the ends.
Set it over the mess and let them blow.
Start lowering submersible pumps down to the hoses and hook them up using the ROVs
Stuff is a mile down. Asking it to utilize its own pressure is a little presumptuous.
Have a mess of hoses means you can still put in the chemical break-down agents.
Coming up with a quick-connect that a ROV can use should be possible.
You can quick-connect hose blocks to the unused hoses, or not.

We made some really great "pizzas" last weekend. A piece of pita bread, brushed lightly with olive oil, with a thin smear of plain hummus spread right to the edge got topped with a mix of zucchini, onion, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and mint that had been tossed with olive oil, lemon juice, sumac and sesame seeds (zataar) and some feta cheese, then blasted at 500 F degrees for about five minutes. Gotta try it with real thin crust pizza dough next, but I count this experiment as a success already.

The top hat is not meant as a permanent solution, and has never been promoted as one. It allows the recovery of roughly 90% of the oil, mitigating the spill until the permanent solution - a relief well - can be put in place.
What you're describing here is enormously complex and unworkable on several fronts. In particular, it would be plagued by the same problem that doomed the first top hat attempt - all those small diameter hoses would be instantly clogged by hydrates. The small amount of "leakiness" specifically permitted by the current top hat is deliberate, and is part of an effort to limit hydrate formation so that flow can be maintained.

Well said:
53 | Bagua Thu, Jun 10, 2010 12:01:51am |
And note the flow Top Hat is being steadily increased as additional processing capacity is added.
The present Top Hat will also be supplemented by reversing the 3" Choke and Kill lines that were used to inject mud, to flowing additional oil and gas to the surface.
A bit further on, the Top Hat itself will be replaced with another Top Hat that will make a better attempt at a seal, and capture still more oil and gas. It will also allow for a rapid disconnection and reconnection during storms.
Each day they have increased the flow to capture the oil. Right now in the top right spill cam, one can see almost the entire width of the fin that it is zoomed in on. This is visual confirmation that more and more oil is being recovered..

re: #51 SixDegrees
90 percent?
Wow. That's great!
Any size hose. 4 inch is just the size I am familiar with. The concept I am touting is to have multiple pumps, not try to hold in the pressure, and pump up more than the well is putting out so you get all the oil, plus some seawater. Trying to seal this beast is a waste of time. The size of the pumps is relatively unimportant.
But thanks for the uplifting news! 90 percent!
I feel better.
Good night. I shall sleep a little better.

Which "measures"?
BP's attempts to cap the well/ capture the leaking oil?
Obamas attempt to put pressure on BP to do the right things (i.e. compensations, clean up costs, etc)
OR ,, the unintended consequences that will occur if BP is forced into chapter 11 and all other oil/ drilling companies are not allowed to continue offshore exploration and drilling?

We are seeing the old conundrum of government and industry: there is a lot of populist and lobbyist pressure to deregulate and "let the market rule", but when deregulated private industries screw up, there is at once populist pressure to intervene and simultaneously complaints about excessive government intereference.
We saw that in the financial markets as well.

Hard turn into non sequitur... brace for impact...
If it is so important to some that one must first have children of their own before they are allowed to have or express an opinion regarding the raising and treatment of children, must one first be a mother or father before offering an opinion on child abuse? Or one on molestation?
If the answer is no, then why can not one without children of their own offer opinions on more benign subjects regarding children?

Of course the primary win of Meg Whitman has caused quite a stir. That even includes some rumblings about an anti-labor remark from Robert Gibbs. I do think the limit is when you try and tell parents how to raise their kids unless their manner of raising the kids represents a violation of the law or a threat to public health or safety.
Every parent and every child is different, and parenting is not an exact science or something that can be reduced to a formula of "if parent does x, then child will do y".

Oh, i don't tell parents they're DOING IT WRONG, I just sometimes offer my observations because I SEE them doing it wrong. Not in the "my little kid acted out in public" sort of way, more in the "I'm yelling at my kid and tearing down his self esteem because he'd rather read about the Ming Dynasty and learn how to program in C++ than waste his time being screamed at by a track coach" sort of way.

One example - dialogue between John Matrix and the main antagonist near the end of the movie.
Matrix: “You can beat me… You want to put a knife in me. Look me in the eyes. See what’s going on in there while you turn it. That’s what you want to do to me, right? Come on, let the girl go. You and me. Don’t deprive yourself of some pleasure. Come on Bennett; let’s party.”

Exactly,
I had some pretty stupid ideas about child rearing that were rapidly modified by my first child.
The basics of child rearing are fairly apparent to anyone with half a brain, but there is a lot you have to experience first hand to appreciate.

Yeah. It makes me mad, it's like a silly rhetorical bludgeon for people who do not want to hear a thing about a thing they are emotionally very invested in. I think the part that is frustrating for parents is when those who do not have kids try to tell us how we are doing it wrong. Not for obvious stuff like abuse, more like the idiots who say "If I had a child, he would never act out in public".
That sort of thing is pretty dickish and condescending. Parents have a right to get pissed at that sort of thing.

Depriving a kid from learning object-oriented programming should qualify as child abuse. Just sayin'

Lots of interesting things falling out of the Primaries. The Tea Partiers are going gaga over their choice for Senator in NV. In Maine one of the creationists won the nod for Governor - he is also a flat-taxer. At least in Iowa the theocrat didn't win the GOP nod, though he came close enough; in that particular race the former IA governor had so much name recognition that I think he was able to fend off the ultra-right candidate.

Exactly,
I had some pretty stupid ideas about child rearing that were rapidly modified by my first child.
The basics of child rearing are fairly apparent to anyone with half a brain, but there is a lot you have to experience first hand to appreciate.
I never read many of the childrearing books my wife tried to get me to read, but one passage really stuck with me: "parenting is a two-way street. Be prepared to learn things from your child".
I must admit that rather blew my mind at the time, but the more I learn from my kids, the better a parent I have become.

I guess so. Only in a few counties or congressional districts could I conceive of that happening. Most of California has been gerrymandered just right so that each party has optimized the number of seats they can get, which means that neither party put all their eggs in just a handful of baskets.
I know that in my congressional district the Hunter family name will carry on until somebody gets indicted and convicted, so it will always be an (R) district.

I wouldn't like my state to adopt it. I think there should be separate "primary" and "general" elections. The way I read Prop 14, what you'll basically have is 2 "general" elections, one to narrow the field down from many to two
here in Georgia and in South Carolina, two places I own property what it would come down to is two republicans domination and facing each other in November. Out in California and up in Massachusetts, where I also have property it would (just about) always be two Dems
Again, I think the "primary" should allow each party to pick their "best", then let THEM face off in the general

Again, each party should have their own primary to put forth their "best" and let them go at it in the general. In a state like SC or GA, dominated by the Repubs, or a state like Mass dominated by Dems you would get a steady stream of that party being #1 and 2 in the primary

They should retain party primaries, just relax the restrictions on changing party registration: voters should be able to choose immediately up to (and including) election day which party primary they wish to vote in, the only restriction being that they can only vote in one primary in any given election.

Glad to hear that somebody has a line on relity. But we are getting to a key bit of Tea Party symbolism: the original Tea party was directed against an unelected government across the Atlantic ocean.
The current TP is railing against a democratically and legally elected American government. that means that they´are in fact against the expressed political will of a majority of the American electorate.
But they still like to imply that this government is somehow illegitimate and in need of overthrow.

That wasn't the claim. I don't particularly care for what I consider "party partisans". People, from both parties, who basically make stuff up to make their political opponents look as badly as possible. Personally I think both sides are full of fuckin' nuts therefore I don't see the need to make shit up to make them look bad when they do a fine enough job on their own.

Yes, read AT very carefully. Note that in supposedly dismissing the rumors the writer (and editor) leaves just enough room for doubt... which is all that is needed for the readers. If you doubt me, look at the comments for that story. It's a way to lead your audience while providing deniability. Ask yourself why that story even exists there at AT, and why it is absent from legitimate news outlets.

Perhaps because there were rumors in comments at AT therefore the writer felt compelled to squash them by writing an article dismissing them

An article to dismiss them would only need one very short sentence: "The rumors are idiotic."
That AT now provides an article in which even more idiotic rumors get floated and promoted in the comments is par for the course over there.
Again, I repeat myself, that AT even decides to run such an article says volumes. It means the entire AT environment is nuts.

Obviously it would take some effort when a coach jumps from college to pro, but that doesn't happen near as often as coaches jumping from college to college, so I would start there.
And no, the NFL (nor any league) "loves it when teams cheat". Leagues are all about image. What hurt the NBA in years past was incidents like the Pacers going into the stands. The Patriots (NFL) are STILL paying the PR price for 'cheating'. Only a small percentage of MLB players have been implicated in steroids yet there is a suspicion over the entire league

Blast Tears Through Afghan Wedding Celebration
KABUL, Afghanistan — A huge explosion tore through the wedding celebration of a local man who had joined an anti-Taliban militia in rural Kandahar Province late Wednesday, killing at least 39, according to provincial government officials.
The blast occurred in the courtyard of a family compound where hundreds of guests had gathered and came about 9:30 p.m., shortly after dark, adding to the sense of terror and confusion. In the smoke and fire, guests ran out of the house into the neighboring orchards where people grow pomegranates and have grape arbors.
“I saw the dead bodies all around me, lying like slaughtered animals,” said Noor al-Haq, 22 as he sat waiting for treatment at Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar.

I'm not arguing that point. AT may well be a "shithole" for all I know. My point is there is enough real craziness to make fun of without resorting to misrepresentation. After the way I was pounded a few weeks ago I'm going to make sure to point out blatant hypocrisy, historical revisionism, and outright misrepresentation. When I see someone putting party above principle I'm going to make sure I give that person a hard time about it. For instance, ignoring the Soros ideology (and the fact that he's a dirtbag) while jumping all over Pat Robertson and Koch is going to get people called out for putting partisanship above reason. One more pet peeve, pointing out the craziness of O'reilly and beck while maintaining Ed Shultz and Rachel Maddow are real news reporters is goofy and completely partisan. All Rachel is missing is a chalkboard and fake tears and she would be Beck and Ed wants to be Rush Limbaugh so badly he's intentionally gaining weight.

It's an interesting feature of Judaism that confers the status of Jew on anyone whose mother was Jewish. According to Hitchens he never even knew he was a Jew until his maternal grandmother let out the secret upon learning that his brother had just gotten engaged to marry a Jewish woman.
I always find these stories interesting, and it makes me think of how Hitler and the Nazis routinely traced maternal lineages looking for Jewish blood in people who were not practising Jews, in their pathalogical quest to better cleanse the master race.

By Wednesday morning, the flood of opposition research on Angle had burst wide open. Prior to that, The Plum Line's Greg Sargent pointed to an interview that Angle gave to Liberty Watch magazine in February 2010, in which she suggested support for making alcohol consumption illegal. Reid's campaign, Sargent added, was planning to paint Angle as, essentially, crazy.

FBI: Mexican soldiers used rifles to chase off U.S. Border Patrol
[Link: www.foxnews.com...]
"CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — Pointing their rifles, Mexican security forces chased away U.S. authorities investigating the shooting of a 15-year-old Mexican by a U.S. Border Patrol agent on the banks of the Rio Grande, the FBI and witnesses told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The killing of the Mexican by U.S. authorities — the second in less than two weeks — has exposed the distrust between the two countries that lies just below the surface, and has enraged Mexicans who see the death of the boy on Mexican soil as an act of murder.
Shortly after the boy was shot, Mexican soldiers arrived at the scene and pointed their guns at the Border Patrol agents across the riverbank while bystanders screamed insults and hurled rocks and firecrackers, FBI spokeswoman Andrea Simmons said. She said the agents were forced to withdraw.
"It pretty quickly got very intense over on the Mexican side," she said, adding that FBI agents showed up later and resumed the investigation, even as Mexican authorities pointed guns at them from across the river.
A relative of the dead boy who had been playing with him told the AP that the Mexicans — who he described as federal police, not soldiers — pointed their guns only when the Americans waded into the mud in an apparent attempt to cross into Mexico.
The Mexican authorities accused the Americans of trying to recover evidence from Mexican soil and threatened to kill them if they crossed the border, prompting both sides to draw their guns, said the 16-year-old boy who asked not to be further identified for fear of reprisal.
........"
Unless Obama and Calderon (who is really fanning the flames of late) hold some high-level discussions soon to defuse this tension, there will be an "incident".
I seem to remember reading right here at LGF articles posted in several cases where armed uniformed men have ventured across the border - at times with vehicles or helicopters - from Mexico.
This is not to say that all instances are the Mexican Army involved - could also be other security organizations or even those in the employment of the drug cartels.
Could be a hot summer indeed.

The ethnic cleansing of the red states begins....
Hispanics flee Arizona ahead of immigration law
Though no one has precise figures, reports from school officials, businesses and individuals indicate worried Hispanics — both legal and illegal — are leaving the state in anticipation of the law, which will go into effect July 29.
Schools in Hispanic areas report unusual drops in enrollment. The Balsz Elementary School District is 75% Hispanic, and within a month of the law's passage, the parents of 70 students pulled them out of school, said District Superintendent Jeffrey Smith. The district lost seven students over the same one-month period last year, and parents tell Smith the Arizona law is the reason for leaving.
"They're leaving to another state where they feel more welcome," he said.

Clyburn says S.C. Dem Senate candidate is a 'plant,' calls for probe
The man nominated as Democrats' candidate for Senate in South Carolina might have been a "plant," a high-ranking Democrat suggested Thursday.House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) called on the U.S. Attorney's office in South Carolina to investigate the circumstances that led to Alvin Greene winning the Democratic primary for Senate in the state earlier this week.
"There were some real shenanigans going on in the South Carolina primary," Clyburn said during an appearance on the liberal Bill Press radio show. "I don't know if he was a Republican plant; he was someone's plant." The third-ranking House Democrat said he found it strange that Greene, a relative unknown prior to Tuesday, was able to produce the money to register and run for Senate, despite being unemployed. Greene allegedly tried to pay in cash, and Clyburn said he wondered whether or not an outside party might have funded that and Greene's campaign, in violation of federal campaign finance laws.

'Follow the Islamic way to save the world,' Prince Charles urges environmentalists
Prince Charles yesterday urged the world to follow Islamic 'spiritual principles' in order to protect the environment.
In an hour-long speech, the heir to the throne argued that man's destruction of the world was contrary to the scriptures of all religions - but particularly those of Islam.
He said the current 'division' between man and nature had been caused not just by industrialisation, but also by our attitude to the environment - which goes against the grain of 'sacred traditions'.
Charles, who is a practising Christian and will become the head of the Church of England when he succeeds to the throne, spoke in depth about his own study of the Koran which, he said, tells its followers that there is 'no separation between man and nature' and says we must always live within our environment's limits.

A friend of mine runs a PR firm that does publicity for a venture capital group that funds high-tech startups. They hold a 'gathering of the CEOs' every year, and this year they were in Pheonix. It's a way for a lot of really smart people to get together, swap ideas, sometimes even merge companies or create strategic partnerships. Cool deal.
The Mayor of Pheonix made a special appearance at the conference, bluntly pleading with them to keep having conferences in Pheonix. He's said that they are bleeding shitloads of money because the relatives of the (perfectly legal) students are not coming up to the US for graduation ceremonies, birthday parties, christenings, first communion-- much less simple vacations-- and that this is hurting Pheonix's economy badly.
He likewise reminded these guys that the boycott of Arizona hurts a lot if Hispanic workers, as well, especially in the hospitality industry. He pleaded with them to let the law work its way out, said that sometimes bad laws get passed and need to be amended, but that economic action is not the solution.
A lot of the CEOs still told him, bluntly, that if the conference scheduling date had been after the law had passed, they wouldn't have come there, because it felt disrespectful to their Hispanic workers. They also said they don't think any company that has Hispanic workers would feel comfortable scheduling the conference there. They accepted the validity of his economic argument, but they didn't feel that 'help the poor busboys' was going to be able to overcome the animus of the law.
It does go to prove what a monstrosity the government can be, and how deeply you can fuck things up with a single law.

No, it doesn't. The federal law does not mandate that the feds verify the citizenship status at every 'stop', just on arrest. It also does not provide a mechanism for the feds to be sued if citizens think they're not prioritizing illegal-busting highly enough.
Neither does the state law. They must have a reason to suspect they are illegal before they ask for proof. All the people saying the cops are going to randomly go up to anyone who looks Hispanic and ask for their papers is lying.

You're overlooking the difference I'm pointing out. The federal law does not mandate that they have to verify if they have any reasonable doubt on any stop. It does not provide a mechanism for citizens to sue law enforcement if they feel that law enforcement has its priorities wrong; I'm really not in favor of second-guessing law-enforcement like that. Not with lawsuits, anyway.

EXCLUSIVE: Hundreds of Non Citizens Have Registered to Vote in Bexar County
That's a really weird report.
First:
Hundreds of non citizens, most of whom are believed to be illegal immigrants, have registered to vote in Bexar County in recent years and dozens of them have actually cast ballots, canceling out the votes of U.S. citizens, 1200 WOAI news will report Thursday morning.
Why are most believed to be illegal immigrants?
Further, in another story from the same station, the same person, Jackie Callahan, is said to dispute the figures:
[Link: radio.woai.com...]
She furthermore said that the previous registration forms didn't actually note that you had to be an America citizen, which seems like an insane oversight, but one that could lead to confusion on the part of immigrants.
It just doesn't make any sense. Illegal immigrants do everything they can do to keep their head down. I can't find any backup for this story, anything to indicate it was anything other than a local problem with voter registration, and nothing that confirms that the ballots were counted after having been cast. It seems like it was a problem with the voter verification system that has now been fixed.
This systemic report, done by the Bush Justice Department, found scant evidence of any sort of voter fraud-- which would include voting by illegal aliens.
[Link: www.nytimes.com...]
It seems a lot more credible than that story.

A group of German teenagers were stunned when English students from their 'twin town' school greeted them with with the Nazi salute.

Last week's jobs report tanked the stock market; the president took weeks to assert control of the oil spill that threatens doom on the Gulf Coast -- but at the White House the Gatsby-like parties roll on as if happy days were here again.
Just yesterday, President Obama held another fun-filled White House event, a picnic for Congress members, complete with hot dogs, cold beverages and a fire pit.
All told, during the last seven weeks of spewing oil and rampant unemployment, he has frolicked and danced through three major White House music parties:
* The black-tie tent bash on the White House South Lawn after the state dinner for Mexico's President Felipe Calderón, which featured singer Beyoncé.
* The Paul McCartney hootenanny -- a night of tributes to the former Beatle, which featured the president himself scooting onto the dance floor to join the Jonas Brothers in the long "la-la-la" closing refrain of "Hey Jude." (Plus, of course, McCartney serenading the first lady with "Michelle.")
* The Ford Theater event -- in which the president, taking a break from "kicking ass" on the oil spill, kicked back and relaxed to the song stylings of one-time "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson, among other B-listers.
It was one thing when the president launched his White House days with a round of Martini Wednesdays, Stevie Wonder concerts, conga-line dancing and Super Bowl parties. That was before the gushing oil and before the employment picture defied the Obama hope-and-change cures.
Now it's different. Now the president's fascination with fun and parties in the midst of crisis has not only reinforced a feeling he's out of touch, but has migrated down the chain of command.

Genetic study sheds light on Jewish diaspora
Scientists have shed light on Jewish history with an in-depth genetic study.
The researchers analysed genetic samples from 14 Jewish communities across the world and compared them with those from 69 non-Jewish populations.
Their study, published in Nature, revealed that most Jewish populations were "genetically closer" to each other than to their non-Jewish neighbours.
It also revealed genetic ties between globally dispersed Jews and non-Jewish populations in the Middle East.
This fits with the idea that most contemporary Jews descended from ancient Hebrew and Israelite residents in the Middle Eastern region known as the Levant. It provides a trace of the Jewish diaspora.

Read this:
Illegal Immigrants Are Voting in American Elections
In 2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that up to 3 percent of the 30,000 individuals called for jury duty from voter registration rolls over a two-year period in just one U.S. district court were not U.S. citizens. While that may not seem like many, just 3 percent of registered voters would have been more than enough to provide the winning presidential vote margin in Florida in 2000. Indeed, the Census Bureau estimates that there are over a million illegal aliens in Florida, and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has prosecuted more non-citizen voting cases in Florida than in any other state.
Florida is not unique. Thousands of non-citizens are registered to vote in some states, and tens if not hundreds of thousands in total may be present on the voter rolls nationwide. These numbers are significant: Local elections are often decided by only a handful of votes, and even national elections have likely been within the margin of the number of non-citizens illegally registered to vote.
Yet there is no reliable method to determine the number of non-citizens registered or actually voting because most laws to ensure that only citizens vote are ignored, are inadequate, or are systematically undermined by government officials. Those who ignore the implications of non-citizen registration and voting either are willfully blind to the problem or may actually favor this form of illegal voting.
Americans may disagree on many areas of immigration policy, but not on the basic principle that only citizens—and not non-citizens, whether legally present or not—should be able to vote in elections. Unless and until immigrants become citizens, they must respect the laws that bar non-citizen voting. To keep non-citizens from diluting citizens' votes, immigration and election officials must cooperate far more effectively than they have to date, and state and federal officials must increase their efforts to enforce the laws against non-citizen voting that are already on the books.
[snip]
We don't know how many illegals are voting because we don't want to know. Nobody is checking.

Here's my offering for the morning break from seriousness. From yesterday's The Writer's Almanac.
Mexico
by Robert Hass
I have just crossed the Rio Grande,
And by a string of clever switchbacks
Have, for the moment, outwitted the posse.
Ahead lie the ghosts of Sierra Madre.
Behind, I have nothing but sun,
While the condor's shadow circles over my bones.
Though the mountains are steep, my horse doesn't falter,
And now I know why starving bandoleros
Will never shoot their animals for food.
Beyond my mirage, I see the white adobe—
Yes, the one with the red-tiled roof—
Which one afternoon I will lean against, with my hat down
And knees up, after a bottle of tequila.
In that siesta, I am sure to dream
Of the lovely senorita
Who has stolen away from her father
To meet me in the orchard.
But enough of that. There is work to be done.
I have cattle to rustle and horses to steal
Before the posse picks up my trail.
(In a poem of Mexico, it would be unwise
For a poet to mention the posse is his wife.)
So, mi amigo, if you find her
Prowling my mountains
With a wooden spoon in her hand,
Tell her I am not here.
Tell her I have run off
With Cormac McCarthy and Louis L'Amour,
That I ride like the wind
To join up with the great Pancho Villa.

Parties Clash as Albany Edges Closer to Shutdown
Without the ability to pay workers or even guarantee their salaries in the future, officials said, they could be forced to close down state agencies immediately after the last emergency bill expires on Monday. Administration officials said they were still searching for a legal mechanism to continue financing essential public safety services, like prisons and the State Police. But courtrooms, parks, highway rest stops and even the state terrorism hot line could all close. A shutdown could also affect some county and local workers, like those who administer Medicaid benefits. Though such workers are employed by the counties, they must gain access to state computer systems to process claims.

Explain why you think this, and in light of the answer pending to B, why I should care.
Your original question may have been about the reliability of AT, it wasn't mine. I've said at least twice that I'm not denying/verifying their reliability or general level of craziness. My contention is that the article mentioned doesn't say what the person suggested it did. He answered my question, I disagreed, we moved-on™.
You can't seriously argue that MM and Move-On aren't soros backed, can you? If Koch gives money to group A and group A then gives money to Group B that's close enough to taint group B isn't it? That's what happened with both Move On and MM. He's entitled to give to whom he chooses and those groups are entitled to argue whatever positions they choose but I happen to prefer to take a groups ideology into consideration when reading/listening to their analysis.
Lastly, I'm not sure why you care nor do I care if you care./ You were the one who engaged me, not the other way around.

Okay this is a sensitive topic for many. I happen to believe that some undocumented immigrants get registered at drives and vote.
Given the lax level of enforcement, a lack of anything like voter ID how can we be so sure those reports of illegals voting are all wrong? One asy to find example-
Task force Chairman Vernon J. Ehlers, R-Mich., said investigators had found concrete evidence of 748 illegal votes by non-citizens, not enough to throw Sanchez's victory into doubt. He and other Republicans said the results nonetheless show that Dornan's challenge was not frivolous and that the GOP was not unfairly targeting Hispanic voters.

China's housing bubble risky: Economist
The high prices of China's urban properties must be controlled, if the country wants to avoid a 2008-09 America-style crisis, and continues to solidify its growth by expanding urbanization, said a leading economist.
Li Daokui, a professor at Tsinghua University and a member of the Chinese central bank's monetary policy committee, told the British Financial Times in an interview that recent Beijing measures to cool off the property frenzy needed to be part of a long-term push to bring housing prices under control.
Li said that the problems in China's housing market are more severe than those in the U.S. before the financial crisis because they combine a potential bubble with the risk of social discontent, the FT report said.
The economist said that there were still signs that China's economy, which accelerated from 10.7 percent in October-December to 11.9 percent in the first quarter this year, was overheating and recommended modest increases in interest rates and a gradual appreciation of the currency, the yuan.
"The housing market problem in China is actually much, much more fundamental, much bigger than the housing market problem in the US and UK before your financial crisis," he said in the FT interview. "It is more than [just] a bubble problem."

Not your fault, but I getting sick to death of the phrase 'true colors'.
Best (saddest) quote from that article:
"It's not a question of building a mosque. It's where they're building it," said Glenn Corbett, a former Waldwick deputy fire chief.
Then it is a question of building a mosque.
And this is just shitty crap:
At one point, a portion of the crowd menacingly surrounded two Egyptian men who were speaking Arabic and were thought to be Muslims.
"Go home," several shouted from the crowd.
"Get out," others shouted.
In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry — were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called "The Way." Both said they had come to protest the mosque.
"I'm a Christian," Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.
But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.

The killing of the Mexican by U.S. authorities — the second in less than two weeks — has exposed the distrust between the two countries that lies just below the surface, and has enraged Mexicans who see the death of the boy on Mexican soil as an act of murder.
Mexican authorities would know about acts of murder.
A relative of the dead boy who had been playing with him told the AP that the Mexicans — who he described as federal police, not soldiers — pointed their guns only when the Americans waded into the mud in an apparent attempt to cross into Mexico.
Looks like Mexicans treat the border as a real border only when folks are crossing into Mexico...too bad they don't point guns at people crossing the other way.

No, I agree with you (about the right to vote). But the conversation was kicked off by the more specific fear that illegal immigrants were voting (I think), and people seem to be using reports of non-citizens voting (possibly due to confusion over eligibility) to imply that illegal immigrants are voting.
Just as an aside, I know that it is possible for non-citizens of some European countries to vote in local elections, which may be one explanation of the confusion (i.e., people assume that the system here is similar to "back home", when it isn't).

You seem to have decided that it's happening, it's a problem, so I'm not sure what there is to talk about.
Are you convinced it is not happening at all?
No. I am convinced that most of it, as the Justice Department probe found, are errors of understanding. I am very convinced that the number of illegal immigrants voting is tiny, since illegal immigrants go out of their way to keep their heads down.

re: #429 reine.de.tout
Insufficient numbers to overturn the result. Sanchez won by a margin beyond the problem votes. But it seemed to prove hundreds of votes from undocumented immigrants. Thats my point-Its there but hyperbole and advocacy drive us away from a simple conclusion. Its there but no big deal in election results.
Post hanging chads-close elections matter. That's where we have trouble, the error factor is way too high in the system from all these issues combined.

White supremacists and racists did not trick the people of AZ into writing this law. This has been a continual problem for decades. I lived near Nogales in the early 90's and immigration was also a big issue then. Nine days until my wedding. I'm a weird person in that I never look forwards to anything, I don't really anticipate things. But the whole process is fun; everything is falling into place. Suits have been purchased, shoes (nice black wingtips) too. Guests are confirmed. Equipment rented. Vows are being written-- I really like the phrase "cleave to", so I'm putting that in.
It's going to be one hell of a party.

Because some on the right spun the comment that some that helped write the law were racists to everyone that supported the law were.
Just like some ex-military militia members are a domestic threat, spun to all military.

White supremacists and racists did not trick the people of AZ into writing this law. This has been a continual problem for decades. I lived near Nogales in the early 90's and immigration was also a big issue then. Lastly, if we're only allowed to support measures that aren't also supported by people we don't approve of, we aren't going to get a whole lot accomplished.
From FAIR's website:
"...FAIR's legal affiliate, the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) assisted Senator Pearce in drafting the language of SB1070..."

You should read up on it. The White Supremacists were responsible for putting the law together. It's not under dispute, it's a fact.
I realize illegal immigration is a problem but passing laws from White Supremacists is very a bad idea.
I guess I probably have to preface my stance by reminding people I've said before that I'm not an "open-borders" type but I am for a more open immigration policy in this country and I'm also against this particular law, but...
It's also hugely popular within the state. Basing our beliefs/political stances on who else supports a measure is a mistake. It doesn't matter to me if people I don't like agree with my political views. The ACLU defended Nazi's in IL, that doesn't make them supporters of fascism does it?

Bullets Shatter Glass at BP Gas Station
Windows at the BP Gas Station on Highway 51 at Custer Drive were shot out overnight. Folks who work at the store believe the suspects were expressing anger over BP and how it's handling the oil spill.
"I believe that would be the reason," said Alex Saleh. "We don't have any enemies." He said nothing was taken from the store after the windows were destroyed.
Incidents of anger spilling over at locally owned BP gas stations have been reported in several areas. In New York City several BP signs have been vandalized. Owners there believe vandals are filling balloons with dirt then throwing them at the signs.
Stanley Morton posted several clips on YouTube, where he's seen driving to a BP station, then dumping yard waste on the property. He jokingly throws a hat over the waste as a solution to cleaning up the mess.
According to CBS News, BP gas is sold at nearly 12,000 stations in the United States. BP actually owns just a small number of those stations. Most are owned by small business owners.

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia — Russia has uncovered at least 495 skeletons, many with head gunshot wounds, in a mass grave probably dating back to purges under Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in the 1930s, municipal authorities said on Wednesday. At least 3.5 tonnes of bones were extracted from the site on the outskirts of the Pacific Ocean port of Vladivostok after it was discovered by workmen building a road, the city government said in a statement.

It might well have been a mistake. Then he realized that he could get some mileage by airbrushing Charles out of the credit picture. Should Sick Baby Have Been 'Seized' for Spinal Tap?
[Link: www.onpointnews.com...]
After nearly six years of litigation, an Idaho jury will now hear a high-stakes case that pits child protection laws against the right of a couple to decide whether their infant daughter should have a spinal tap test for meningitis. The long-awaited trial will focus on a critical five-hour period which began when Corissa Mueller brought her daughter Taige to the emergency room of a Boise hospital with flu-like symptoms and ended when Dr. Richard MacDonald — over her vehement objections — performed the “lumbar puncture” procedure.
After consulting with MacDonald, Boise Police Detective Dale Rogers had authorized the procedure under a child protection law that allows police to “seize” a minor without a court order when “necessary to prevent serious physical or mental injury to the child.”
Mueller and her husband Eric sued MacDonald, the city of Boise, and state social workers in August 2004. “The Mueller case could spell out the federal constitutional limits on the authority of state officials to interfere with family decisions about medical, educational or other difficult issues,” says the Center for Individual Rights in Washington, D.C., which is representing the couple.

Honestly; it seems that it would behoove him to check LGF with this stuff, and give credit right up front. He knows LGF is at the forefront on these things.
Well, at least he didn't try to BS his way out when caught.

You could have made your point without jumping all over Ace. I actually agree with you. Republicans spent like money like drunken sailors but that doesn't excuse the dems for doubling, actually tripling, down on the stupid.

it should change right now. it's just not all Obama's fault. learning about the past does not mean that you are wrong about the present.

Rabbi Receives Death Threats Over Helen Thomas Video
[Link: www.foxnews.com...]
Guy's a class act, too....but not as classy as the guy from the "We con the world" video who put on blackface and sang "I hate the jews" dressed as President Obama to the tune of "I did it my way."
Yes, Helen's comment was reprehensible.
Yes, death threats are wrong.
Yes, even those people who many see as heroic can act like assholes themselves from time to time.

The Thomas screed was unmitigated anti-Semitic hate speech.
Why bitch and whine about the person to whom she issued the diatribe? Isn't that kind of a lame attempt to discredit the truth by shooting the messenger?

I didn't discredit anything, nor did I shoot the messenger. Just because the guy himself can be a dick is irrelevant, but it doesn't change the fact that he can be a dick. You don't see a problem with accusing someone (like President Obama) of being an anti-semite when they're not? I find that inconsistency in outrage interesting.

I retract nothing.
I have explained myself.
I do hope that the only people who vote are citizens.
I think that's a quite sensible thing to hope for.I have not seen anything credible that illegals are voting, or voting in numbers that disrupt our election process.
These views do not negate each other.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Hey, Reine - I sure hope the Pope doesn't slip unnoticed into voting booths in countries he is visiting to illegally vote.
Of course there is no evidence that anything of the sort has been happening. Nevertheless I take nothing back - I stand by my original statement. Goddamn those imaginary illegally voting Popes!11!
Just who do they think they are to go trampling over our rights like that? Gaah!

I don't know how the Pope got involved in this.
The rest of it is garbled gobbledy-gook that I never said. So, I'm not sure why you're addressing me with it.

Yes, Reine - the analogy is beyond your comprehension. You really have no idea what the connection between that and what you said was.
You really didn't get that it's odd to make a point of saying "I really do hope X doesn't happen" while fully admitting that X is not happening and is never likely to. Sure!

In #277, Killgore quoted a report, which said in part (and this was quoted by Killgore):
Though no one has precise figures, reports from school officials, businesses and individuals indicate worried Hispanics — both legal and illegal — are leaving the state in anticipation of the law, which will go into effect July 29.
Notice the report mentions people here legally and illegally.
Killgore then makes this comment:
re: #309 Killgore Trout
Sorry but the report is that hispanics are leaving because they fear persecution. The law was written by real white supremacists and creating fear among ethnic minorities was an intended consequence. They'll move somewhere else and they'll vote Dem.
And since the report he's referring to mentioned legal and illegal, I responded with:
re: #310 reine.de.tout
I hope the only ones voting will be those who are citizens, not the ones here illegally.
I've explained it and explained it, but it seems neither you nor Iceweasel want to accept the explanation or, really, engage in a discussion of this.
Iceweasel several times mentioned things I was "worried" about I never used the term "worry" or "worried". Those were her words, not mine.
Now you pop up and post some weird stuff that I never said.
Instead of accepting what I say or what I say I meant, you both seem intent on telling me what it is I meant. Well - yes, your rewriting of what I said is beyond my comprehension, I don't get it, nor can I figure out why you're doing it.
But carry on.

You didn't explain anything there. You just recapped some of what I've already read. I'm perfectly aware of what you said, when you said it, and who to, etc.
It just seemed odd that you would make a point of raising what you admit is a non-issue. I think that's pretty reasonable.
It seems even more odd for you to insist that no-one could possibly think so.
