Okay, storytime...
Eshu's Hat
There were once two farmers who had adjoining plots of land. All of their lives they had been the best of friends and had made a pact never to argue with each other.
One day Eshu decided to play a trick on them. He put on a tall hat which was black on one side and white on the other, then proceeded to walk down the path that divided the two farms. As he sauntered between the fields he made a point of exchanging pleasantries with each of the men. Later, when it time for Eshu to walk back down the path in the opposite direction, he turned the hat around front to back and went back the way he had come, again passing both men in their fields.
Later that day the friends got to talking about the man with the hat. Each insisted that, since he had seen BOTH sides of the hat, he was 100% certain that he was correct and that the other was either blind, lying, or just plain crazy. The quarrel became so violently out of proportion that the king eventually heard about it and had all of the parties summoned.
Upon their arrival at the palace Eshu informed the king that neither man was a liar, but that both were fools. He removed his hat and showed the former friends each side, explaining how he had tricked them. He then turned the hat inside-out and showed them that it was actually red.

Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother:
The first said, "I built a big house for our mother."
The second said, "I sent her a camel with a driver."
The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You remember how Mom enjoyed reading the Divan-e Hafez? And you know she can't see very well. So I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Divan. It took elders of the town 19 years to teach him. He's one of a kind. Mama just has to name the Ghazal number, and the parrot recites it."
Soon thereafter, mom sent out her letters of thanks:
"Ali," she wrote one son, "The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house.
"Reza," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the camel. And the driver is so rude!"

The Old Woman Who Wanted to Buy Joseph
It is said that when they sold Joseph to the Egyptians the latter treated him kindly. There were many buyers so the merchants priced him at from five to ten times his weight in musk. Meanwhile, in a state of agitation, an old woman ran up, and going among the buyers said to an Egyptian: "Let me buy the Canaanite, for I long to possess that young man. I have spun ten spools of thread to pay for him so take them and give me Joseph and say no more about it."
The merchants smiled and said: "Your simplicity has misled you. This unique pearl is not for you; they have already offered a hundred treasures for him. How can you bid against them with your spools of thread?" The old woman, looking into their faces, said: "I know very well that you will not sell him for so little, but it is enough for me that my friends and enemies will say, 'this old woman has been among those who wished to buy Joseph'."
He who is without aspiration will never reach the boundless kingdom. Possessed of this lofty ambition a great prince regarded his worldly kingdom as ashes. When he realized the emptiness of temporal royalty, he decided that spiritual royalty was worth a thousand kingdoms of the world.

Good morning to anyone out there. I'm not usually up at 2:44 am (time here) but it was enjoyable day and expecting more a little later.
Storms in the mid-west. I remember them well and enjoyed each one. Especially when the thunder sounds like it's in the room with you.
Starbucks is just down the street but too early for them. Making coffee in a hotel room never turned out well so won't even try that one.

Do we not see the injustice of it all, of holding a green Mr. Obama culpable for either the blowout or the tardy and insufficient efforts at clean-up? Does Obama appoint another “czar?” Does he do to BP what he did to Las Vegas, the saw-happy surgeons, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News? Is the spill to oil companies what the 2008 panic was to GM? Is there some sort of cash-for-clunkers PR fix? A Bush memo to be found ordering drilling from a zillion feet?
What to do? Where to turn? Whom to blame? Who unfairly established this strange post-Katrina precedent that the president of all people — not the mayor, not the governor, not private enterprise — is ultimately responsible?
We can all question that unfair premise, and did so in 2005, but critics like Obama himself made the federal response to Katrina a campaign issue. And so here we are with him hoisted with his own petard.

Gus or Freetoken (don't remember which) questioned if it was a Rass poll but I couldn't remember where I had seen it. Luckily someone posted a story about it yesterday which reminded me of the conversation.
All five of the possible GOP contenders lead Obama with independents, but Paul does so by the widest margin at 46-28.

the govt can tax the shit out of it, guarantee good quality, and it would STILL cost less than buying it from dealers on the street. I think of it like alcohol when it comes to vices. Have a minimum age for buying it. It may be unhealthy, but so are many other things like cigarettes, booze, and certain foods. Sometimes you gotta think out of the box when looking at the big picture. And the revenue generated, plus the decreased street drug activity make this a win/win.

Karlton Stephenson never thought he find himself on the other side of the law. The 16-year-old is part of a program for teens interested in law enforcement. But on Tuesday night he was a suspect.
"About the time I got about right here, he said hey son! Put your hands up! Next thing I know he drew his gun," said Stephenson.
Just minutes prior, Houston police dispatched a call of a suspicious person carrying a gun. The suspect's clothing description matched Stephenson.
"He was like this over me, like this with his gun drawn on me, and my dog was right here. I was like can I get my dog! Can I get my dog!" he said.
Stephenson said he was laying face down on the ground and tried to calm his three-year-old boxer, Bush, who became excited during the commotion and confusion.
"My dog, he was like, he jumped up and looked at him. And (the officer) said dog! Boom!" Stephenson said, demonstrating how the officer shot and killed the dog.

A. I was just pointing out that it didn't take a whole lot of detective skills to know it was an old story.
and B. Why is it a stupid story? There has been story after story about the possibility of replacing the dollar as the worlds currency. The Euro is in trouble, China thinks the Yen should be the new standard, the UN said last year there should be a new currency. It's an ongoing story but I don't see anyone, other than the NWO fanatics, in a panic.

I just tried to find a link to a SWAT incident. Can't find it. Too many years ago. In short-Meth lab raid, 4 man stack enters, #1 man gets bit badly by a pit bull just inside. A fighting dog. The cop tries to fend off the dog, winds up shooting himself, the men behind him get all bunched up with the injured officer... Anyway several cops wind up wounded and the dog dead. Part of the issue was his gun was too long to engage the dog, which had him by the crotch and the big inner thigh tendon. The case is famous in cop training circles. As a warning.

What was supposed to be a honeymoon and week of vacation has turned into a nightmare for a couple who work at Erlanger Medical Center.Eric Wright was arrested by a Chattanooga Police officer when he rushed his wife Aline to the emergency room at Erlanger with stroke symptoms.
The couple married this last Sunday and were taking their only vacation allowed for the year at Erlanger when Aline got very sick Wednesday night. Her face was drooping and her speech was slurred. Eric is a medic and served tours with the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan, while Aline is a registered nurse. Both knew they had to get to an emergency room fast.
"I would like an apology from the officer because he indeed delayed my care," Aline Wright said.

They always shoot the dog. It happens often enough that you have to question if it's rule #1 or #2.

A video showing LaGrange police officers shooting a dog is creating an Internet sensation and drawing the ire of some city residents.City residents said the owner of the dog, Marcus Mays, was ticketed for not keeping it on a leash or in a pen. The LaGrange city clerk confirmed Mays has a city court appearance for the city ticket today in LaGrange.
The nearly 10-minute video, shot from a camera apparently located inside a police vehicle, is posted on YouTube and shows the dog standing in front of a mobile home, tied to the home with a chain or rope. The dog, which appears to be a bulldog, does not offer any resistance and allows an officer to put a leash on it.
The next part of the video shows the dog, tied with a chain to the back of a vehicle, calmly lying down on the street as two officers talk on cell phones, one with a Taser drawn.
The street signs at the intersection are visible but unreadable.
When one of the officers attempts to use a long catch pole to collar the dog, it begins to react and furiously bark at the officers, rearing up on its hind legs and lunging toward them.
The dog is put on the pole and guided to the side of the road. One of the officers then draws his gun and shoots the dog, dropping it to the ground.

Pittsburgh police said a Sheraden woman has surrendered on charges that she killed her two dogs and tried to pin their deaths on her son and another man.Deborah Kyles, 52, surrendered Friday morning, a day after police charged her with two counts of animal cruelty and one count of filing false police reports.
Police said Kyles bound, suffocated and injected a Chihuahua with antifreeze in April. Investigators said Kyles told them she found the dog in the back of her daughter's boyfriend's truck.
A second dog was discovered May 4 in her back yard after a neighbor called police. The Pomeranian had been stabbed, its head covered in a plastic bag and its legs bound.
"The crimes are premeditated. Deborah Kyles not only killed her dogs, she tortured her dogs," said Pittsburgh Police Officer Christine Luffey.

The redoubtable Fareed Zakaria has a good column in the current Newsweek regarding coverage of the oil spill. He certainly does not spare Obama, but he makes the following point:
I can't argue with that. It is one of the disappointments I have with Obama is that he does listen too much to the wingnuts when they demand he meet with BP executives, make speeches and show up for photo ops on the beeches. These are pretty pointless and I doubt he'd be doing them if he wasn't listening to the wingnuts too much. He should just ignore them.

Get rid of the pads and helmets, and there will be fewer injuries. Look at rugby...just as violent, if not more so, than football, and fewer injuries. Also, the fact that the players have to keep running the whole time weeds out the big fuckers with exoskeletons strapped to their bodies. Those big linemen with the braces around their legs, whiplash pads behind their helmets, etc. are worthless.

While I cannot argue with anyone who has found large swaths of the current World Cup boring, I have to take issue with these two suggestions in particular.
1) The 45 minutes of non-stop play per half is one of the things that (IMO) makes soccer superior to other sports. It also means that when you attend a match you don't have to deal with the constant parade of idiots trying to get around you so they can make a concession run every 5 minutes like at virtually any other sporting event. Admittedly, this does lead to heavy congestion at the beer stand and restrooms at halftime.
2) MLS matches are almost always played on a smaller surface and this doesn't lead to significantly more goalmouth action. I would also point out that arena football itself is nearly dead.

The reason we need to break the game down to four 15 minute quarters with three time-outs per team (plus a couple of TV time-outs) is that Americans by and large are incapable of paying attention for 45 minutes at a stretch. Oh, and American soccer would also require unlimited substitutions. Can't have our players getting tired.
Imagine if we had professional cricket in the US. "What the fuck do you mean, a five day match ends in a tie?" Hell, even the one-day internationals would be too much for people to handle...and those are exciting (limited to 50 overs per side)

I am not a fan of the Dutch, but I spent many years living about 50 miles from that country and attended their national team's first game of the 2000 European Championship at Amsterdam ArenA. I am quite sure that anyone who experiences even a smidgen of the intensity for the sport in that country (as you did) would have the open-minded attitude toward it that you display.

Obama has shown great interest. I like that but also agree some of it may be unnecessarily so driven by the wingnuts.
I'm concerned with the blowout itself and what seems to me, at least sometimes, our attitude toward it. We have such technology at our disposal and such great confidence in our abilities to do something that's never been done before, at least to my knowledge. I think we're sitting on Day 52? What if it exists on Day 152? Or, maybe even Day 752? I'm confident too but just want to see it capped and controlled. Additional proof that yes, we can do anything.

Spokeswoman Sheila Williams said Hayward took a break from overseeing BP efforts to stem the undersea gusher in Gulf of Mexico to watch his boat "Bob" participate in the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.
The one-day yacht race is one of the world's largest, attracting hundreds of boats and thousands of sailors.
In a statement, BP described Hayward's day off as "a rare moment of private time" and said that "no matter where he is, he is always in touch with what is happening within BP" and can direct recovery operations if required.

I understand Fareed's point but I don't see it as a very valid comparison. The amount of oil pouring into the gulf is roughly equivelant to a new valdez accident every 10 days and it has been going on for months. Also, not only has the "news" business changed a lot during the last 20 years but the Valdez happened in a fairly remote area while the current spill is happening live on camera right off the shore. The valdez spill could only be as large as the amount of oil the tanker held while we don't see an end to the current problem until august with no one knowing how much will be pouring in and where it will end up. Lastly, you're going to have a hard time making the argument in November that the administration has handled the spill in a coherent and effective manner.
I was flipping through the Slate 'toons earlier and the president is getting hammered.

This is pretty much true. The endless stop-start of American sports is a huge turn-off, even in NFL football, which I like. The constant timeouts and endless focus on the coach, rather than the players, is an even bigger turn-off. The coach should be more or less superfluous to the game - players should be making most, if not all, the decisions. That's a big part of what makes sport interesting.
Soccer is a more or less interesting sport, but the lack of scoring makes it a game mostly about passing. And fundamentally, that isn't very exciting. Other than changes in the officiating, such as more transparency from the refs, there don't need to be too many huge changes, I think. Personally, I would either double the size of the goal and retain the keeper, or halve the size and lose the keeper. That, or any other change that would increase the scoring in soccer to something roughly around the level of hockey, would be fine.

I need to get up. I'm still in bed...nekkid, of course, but I know you all prefer me that way. Though I did take a nasty fall down the steps on the deck last night around 2am (again, nekkid). Dog got locked on the bottom yard so I went to open the gate for him and slipped about half-way down the steps. Hurt my ass, elbow(big time) and pride mostly...but I was writhing around in bed like a soccer player after getting tripped, according to my wife...she took care of me though...frozen veggies for the elbow, ibuprofen, and of course a kiss to make it all better. Fuck that hurt. Next time I wear slippers when I go outside.

Lakeview Gusher
The Lakeview Gusher Number One was an immense out-of-control pressurized oil well resulting in what is regarded as the largest oil spill in history, lasting 18 months and releasing 9 million barrels (1.4×106 m3) of crude oil. Pressure in what was one of the largest oil reserves in America, in Kern County, California built to an extreme due to the quantity of crude oil and geothermal activity in the area.
When drilling in the area began, primarily by the Lakeview Oil Company, it was intended only to discover natural gas and a small amount of crude oil; but the drilling hit the massive oil reserve resulting in an overload of storage tanks and the eruption of the entire reserve.[1]
The geyser of congealed crude oil amounted to nearly 9 million barrels (1.4×106 m3) of oil, or more than 1.2 million U.S. tons, far more than any other on land or water, flooding the entire valley and destroying the entire reserve and drilling area. The site of the Lakeview oil geyser is located about a half-mile east of the Taft-Maricopa Highway, State Route 33, in the Midway-Sunset Oil Field in Kern County, California. The site is marked by a Caltrans guide sign and a bronze plaque, and is designated as California Historical Landmark number 485.

Drilling at Lakeview Number One well was started by the Lakeview Oil Company on January 1, 1909. As the drilling continued and only natural gas was found, the Lakeview company partnered with Union Oil Company which wanted to build storage tanks on Lakeview property.[2]
While modern well-drilling techniques have advanced safety features such as blowout preventers that reduce the chances of a gusher, early twentieth-century drilling technology could not contain the high pressures encountered at Lakeview. The gusher began on March 14, 1910, as the drill bit reached 2,440 ft (740 m).[3]
The well casing is a steel pipe-liner that contains oil as it is pumped from the depths. During drilling, the casing also guides the drill bit and drive shaft in a roughly straight line. Pressure blew at least part of the casing out, along with an estimated 9 million barrels (1.4×106 m3) of oil, before the gusher was brought under control 18 months later in September 1911.[4]
Deepwater Horizon could give this one a run for the money. Not unheard of for a well to blow off pressure for months.
