American Spectator Publishes Another Dishonest Sherrod Hit Piece

Wingnuts • Views: 3,722

It should be no surprise to find American Spectator, the magazine that plays host to white supremacist blogger Robert Stacy McCain, running an absolutely vile 4000-word attack piece on Shirley Sherrod today.

Jeffrey Lord says Sherrod lied in her speech to the NAACP when she talked about the murder of a black man by a white sheriff, because she called it a “lynching.” Lord says this murder could not have been a lynching because the black man wasn’t hanged from a tree. Yes, really; that’s his disgusting point: The American Spectator : Sherrod Story False.

Last week after this story broke, I predicted that the right would now redouble their efforts to smear Sherrod. But this takes the nastiness to a whole new level. The American Spectator should be embarrassed to publish such a naked piece of race-baiting ugliness, but I know they are not.

And for the record, they also have no problem when one of their writers publicly labels Mexicans as “beaners.”

UPDATE at 7/26/10 10:44:45 am:

Some of the other writers for American Spectator are slightly uncomfortable with this approach.

Apparently the poor man was beaten to death on the courthouse steps while handcuffed.

Nowhere does the ugly term "lynching", by the way, imply that the victim must be hanged. Stoning by an angry mob would qualify, too.

I am going to steal Jeffrey Lord's lynch money.

It seems odd to me that this bogus story about an obscure relatively low level USDA employee has opened the floodgates. I guess this is as good as anything.

So morally repugnant I cannot stand it.

BTW, they're wrong about the definition of lynching in any case:

A lynching is an extrajudicial mob killing. No one who worked to document the practice of lynching in the South limited the definition of the term to solely include those lynchings that occurred using a rope. Don't believe me? Here's the definition of lynching as described in the 1922 anti-lynching bill introduced by Republican Rep. L.C. Dyer that Lord pretends to know something about:

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the phrase "mob or riotous assemblage," when used in this act, shall mean an assemblage composed of three or more persons acting in concert for the purpose of depriving any person of his life without authority of law as a punishment for or to prevent the commission of some actual or supposed public offense.

So Lord concocts a definition of lynching that would only include a narrow number of lynchings, which is a bit like setting the threshold for racism so high that nothing short of having a closet full of white sheets would make you a racist.

Source: Adam Serwer, Defining Lynching Down-- terrific piece, I recommend it all:

Now does three guys beating someone to death sound like an extrajudicial mob killing to you? Well Lord thinks it's merely "brutal fisticuffs" because under the definition of lynching he just made up, you need a rope to make it official -- I mean they didn't even set the guy on fire for crying out loud! It's almost as if instead of being a Southerner tortured by the knowledge of past racial injustice, he's someone who didn't know very much about lynching or segregation before he decided to call Shirley Sherrod a liar without bothering to use Google first. What's sad is that when the generation that actually remembers what living under segregation was like is gone, this kind of historical revisionism is just going to get 10 times worse.

Finally, how many times are conservatives going to try to smear this woman before some sense of shame or decency kicks in?

5 mikefromArlington  Mon, Jul 26, 2010 10:18:05am

When will the race baiting effort of the right be the story?

Do you think this is the intention? Purposely make it the story so then in 2012 they can turn around and say see, this is what Obama has brought you? American's attacking American's for being racist?

I wouldn't put it past them. I imagine Fox and the rest of the hate mongers love when the discussion turns to race as it tears into Obama's whole "there is only the United States of America" branding.

He should tell that man's family he wasn't lynched. Lynchings come in all forms. I was out of town on vacation when the Sherrod story broke and man I feel so bad for this woman. The actual family that she talked of credits her with saving their farm but these assholes don't care about that. All they care about is smearing her and the NAACP because the NAACP asked their precious Tea Baggers to call out the racism that exists in their movement. I feel so bad for Sherrod.

But clearly, the team mentality is rooted in a disgusting basic difference in world view. I knew racism was still alive and well in America. I just didn't realize how far up the food chain it goes.

The Right won't let this go until they have destroyed the Sherrods. Riehl World View has a very long piece on Charles Sherrod's racism today, complete with video clips and lots of dark, dark hints about why the Sherrods might have named their daughter "Russia" in the 1960s. This entire family will be vilified until Breitbart is seen as having been fundamentally justified even if he did edit the clip. The impression will be that the Sherrods are Marxist, racist liars whom Breitbarth was right to expose, whatever tactics he "had to" use. Everything decent they ever did will be hauled out and used against them.

Precisely. At the end of the day, it's about saving the "credibility" they have deluded themselves into believing they possess, about saving Breitbart's ass, and doing so in a manner that hurts Obama and Democrats as a whole. They won't simply settle for dragging Shirley Sherrod's name through the mud anymore, now they want to destroy not simply her, but her family as a whole. Mark my words, before this is over, the Right will have found some way to even accuse her father of having put himself in front of that white man's bullet, instigating his own murder in order to further the drive for "reparations" or whatever sick shit they claim all blacks are after.

25 JamesWI  Mon, Jul 26, 2010 10:36:48am

I wonder if American Spectator would have called out Clarence Thomas back during his confirmation hearings.

"And from my standpoint, as a black American, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate rather than hung from a tree."

So remember kids, black man beaten to death while handcuffed on the courthouse steps, by a white mob = not a lynching, Sherrod is a liar. Being asked questions about sexual harassment/assault allegations = lynching. Got it? Good.

BUT that is the idea.
That is what this is really all about.
Now AB may have done it to get back at the NAACP, but whoever paid him and gave him that tape wanted the Sherrods to be ruined because of the Pigford lawsuit against the USDA in which they were the lead plaintiffs (other black farmers were allowed to join later) that they won and which has not been paid out yet because the Senate can seem to approve the funding.
This is a judgment that has not be paid out yet.
Funding was included in the war supplemental bill last week but that has gone on (last I saw) to be filibustered.

Now they can talk about how she is taking the gov. for millions and they can yell about reparations and all other racist bull shit.

It is not a coincidence that they went after a relatively obscure individual in the first place. They learned from anti-communist hysteria of the 50's. You go after writers and minor actors, they get blacklisted and their lives are ruined. You go after a big name star and suddenly the studios/networks stand up and demand evidence. This whole thing started to play the same way, but then the script changed on them. Apparently the wingnuts haven't caught onto that yet and are simply trying more of the same.
I trust the sane folks of the world will stick with it. And oh yeah, we (as in the government) should pay the settlement in the Pigford case too.

"Listen, and understand. That Andynator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until your life is utterly ruined."

Is this as good as it gets for the so-called loyal opposition in America?

Because once you've stooped to this level, with no major refudiation repudiation in sight from major members of the GOP, I can't honestly see how they're going to claw their way back out of the racist, nativist, religionist hole.

At least not before November.

It's a witch hunt....

The night is black
Without a moon.
The air is thick and still.
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torchlit hill.

Features distorted in the flickering light,
The faces are twisted and grotesque.
Silent and stern in the sweltering night,
The mob moves like demons possesed.
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right,
Confident their ways are best.

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will.
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill.

They say there are strangers who threaten us,
are immigrants and infidels.
They say there is strangeness too dangerous
In our theaters and bookstore shelves.
Those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.

Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand...

Riehl will go after son Kenyatta next.
Under British rule, Jomo Kenyatta, later first president of Kenya, had been tried and convicted of being a leader of the Mau-Mau. Kenyatta always denied involvement with the group, even many years later when there was nothing to lose by confessing. There is good evidence that the testimony against him was perjured.
White supremacists in this country are aware of this connection and have used this against black Americans who use the name, including Medgar Evers's son, Darrell Kenyatta Evers.

It seems odd to me that this bogus story about an obscure relatively low level USDA employee has opened the floodgates. I guess this is as good as anything.

Seriously, what if he were right? What if Shirley Sherrod were a horrible, horrible racist?

What would that prove, exactly?

re: #4 iceweasel

So morally repugnant I cannot stand it.

BTW, they're wrong about the definition of lynching in any case:

Emmett Till wasn't hanged.

re: #7 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

"Jeffrey Lord says Sherrod lied in her speech to the NAACP when she talked about the murder of a black man by a white sheriff, because she called it a “lynching.” Lord says this murder could not have been a lynching because the black man wasn’t hanged from a tree."

Jeffrey Lord, Motherfucker.

Though I will admit I have no evidence he fucked his mother

I had a college fencing coach named Jef Lord. I hope to God this is not the career he went on to.

The GOP's leadership seems to have come to the consensus that it's time to start assimilating the third parties into the Big Tent, if only to pick up more votes for November. Problem is, in doing so, they're creating the perfect environment for a very painful and very public schism in the future, very likely in the run-up to 2012. Either that or a wholesale exodus of liberal and moderate Republicans from the party, leaving it a withered husk that will go the way of the Whigs.

re: #35 calochortus

Interestingly, the same thing happened in the Salem Witch Trials. The world never changes much.

re: #60 calochortus

Do I understand correctly that the problem with Sherrod's daughter is that they named her "Russia" back in the 60's? Seems to me that means they actually support the Imperial government rather than the USSR.
OMG, they're secret Right Wingers!!!1!!1

Are they entirely sure that's not a tribute to Rush Limbaugh?

I am confused too as an 8 year old! I truly don't know how to define the difference. What is a good resource to learn the nuances? I cannot debate anyone unless feel strong in my facts, and I am not strong on the definitions that are thrown around so casually lately. I need clear, distinct, definitions that really demonstrate the difference. I know the terms are not interchangeable, but people seem to do it all the time. I do not want to be like that.

So much disinformation, so little time, and the truth can be found......?

Because we all know no one gave their kids wacked out names back in the 60s.

I went to pre-school with a kid named 'Lichen'.

I had a student named Geoff a few years ago. That's not unusual, except that he and presumably his parents insisted on pronouncing it "Jee-off" rather than "Jeff."

No chrysalis stage in between?
It's a miracle, I tell you!

A chrysalis is just a butterfly pupa. You're confusing larvae and pupae, I suspect.

If you're looking for an analogy without a pupal stage, it's hard to go past maggot to blowfly.

95 Mentis Fugit  Mon, Jul 26, 2010 3:16:11pm

Curse my faulty memory - there is a pupal stage.

Cockroaches, on the other hand...
