Quite so. Sad thing is everything he covers is done better than the MSM. “Drive by Media” is a phrase coined by a jerk. But even that jerk can clearly see the lack of depth in coverage.

The time/content thing is not coincidental. If you’re doing 24 hour news, you need a lot of filler, and outrageous outrage fits the bill nicely.

Using data from an experiment (N = 332), we found that individual-level political ideology significantly predicted perceptions of Colbert’s political ideology. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the groups in thinking Colbert was funny, but conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements.
Do not misunderestimate them.

I remember when the Monsignior came to visit the class and our teacher got down on her knees to kiss his ring.
There was something about it that rankled my notions of what America and Democrracy were all about at the tender age of eight, and I was never able to resolve that Church’s hierarchy with my views of how we are supposed to treat each other.

Holy over-analysis, Batman!
Communal reinforcement is the process by which a claim becomes a strong belief through repeated assertion by members of a community. The process is independent of whether the claim has been properly researched or is supported by empirical data significant enough to warrant belief by reasonable people. Often, the mass media contribute to the process by uncritically supporting the claims. More often, however, the mass media provide tacit support for untested and unsupported claims by saying nothing skeptical about even the most outlandish of claims.
Communal reinforcement explains how entire nations can pass on ineffable gibberish from generation to generation. It also explains how testimonials reinforced by other testimonials within the community of therapists, sociologists, psychologists, theologians, politicians, talk show hosts, etc., can supplant and be more powerful than scientific studies or accurate gathering of data by disinterested parties.
Communal reinforcement explains, in part, why about half of all American adults deny evolution occurred and believe that God created the universe in six days,* made the first man and woman out of clay, and a snake talked the woman into disobeying an order from God thereby causing all our problems. It also explains how otherwise rational and intelligent people can be persuaded to accept such stories as true when they are provided by a comforting community in a time of great emotional need. Every cult leader knows the value of communal reinforcement combined with isolating cult members from contrary ideas.

OT: Been staying down in Newcastle, Australia for a week. Coincedentally I finished Climate Cover Up while I was here: read it 2/3 through 3 months ago and never finished it, restarted from the beginning.
There is a major coal seam inland in the Hunter Valley, supposedly 300 years worth of coal. On a high day, when I visited downtown Newcastle, the coal ships run thirty deep waiting to load up. Yesterday I only saw 10. I love big ships and think that part of it is cool. Thinking about all that stored up carbon being released tempers that. From the research I’ve looked at most of this coal goes to the China steel industry who have long range contracts.
Caught between the depressing feeling we’re screwed and the anger of the wholesale scam perpetuated upon us by the denial lobby, my wife told me she wants to have children. Our future weights heavily on whether I have children, I am worried that they will see war and a much different world if I don’t in my waning years.

Seriously: we have one hundred thousand or so news outlets putting on the “I’m a serious person, and this is the news” face on a 24-hour basis, yet the only ones who get to the heart of the matter are the comedians.

Been having some computer problems so I only have infrequent access.
I’m sorry I missed the Ken Mehlman thread, but I wanted to post this in his honor.
Many years ago, my supervisor called me into her office. We were actually personal friends (and oddly enough, she’s gay), but anyway, when I got there, she said to me, “I want you to read this e-mail and tell me if you think it’s for real.”
It was from Ken Mehlman’s office. The night before, Whoopi Goldberg said something publicly against Bush. I don’t remember if it was an award’s show or something, but there was some scuttlebutt about it that morning. Anyway, the e-mail referred to Whoopi’s statement and said that anyone making any statements against President Bush would be subject to fine or imprisonment or both and that it was against the law to speak against the president. The e-mail was extremely threatening. I shit you not.
I told her it must be a scam. That no one politically connected in any way would say something so stupid. Even Bush’s people had to know that. I suggested forwarding the email to our IT guy and see if he could track the headers. “He’ll know where it came from,” I told her.
It came from Mehlman’s campaign office. Mehlman’s signature was on that e-mail. I never forgot that about him.

I’ve got a neighbor who’s my age (mid-fifties); her husband is 35.
She catches hell from one of the other ladies in the neighborhood, who is SHOCKED at the cradle-robbing.
More power to ‘em, I say. Their marriage ain’t nobody’s freaking business but their own.

How about maybe, just maybe, they are in love? (I know, strange concept, I love how money or looks HAS to be behind a relationship that doesn’t fit the Hollywood norm).

He’s very quiet, serious - she’s actually older in age, but he acts like the paw-paw. And they seem to be crazy about each other.

My mom’s having this problem. She’s looking for an eligible senior (over 65) but they all want 50 year olds. And they get them. It’s a double standard for men and I think it sucks.

Women live longer than men, so if a woman marries someone younger, you’ll have better luck staying together longer.
Makes more sense biologically really.

Let us now go back in time, to the days of yore, when synagogues were viewed with no little suspicion whenever a gaggle of Jews wanted to build a new one in, say, Sheboygan.
Jewish interviewer, addressing the Spokesjew for the proposed new synagogue and community center and school on the hallowed ground of Wisconsin: “So, you’re saying that the kitchen will not include facilities for making Christian children into matzoh-ball soup? Tee-hee, tell me another one.”
Spokesjew: “What in the name of gehennah are you talking about?”
Interviewer: “Oh, come on. You and I should not pretend we don’t know about the seekrit laws of the Talmud.”
Spokesjew: “I’m sorry, why do you keep winking and nudging me? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Interviewer: “You know, a few good Jews like you could really spoil things for the rest of us. This is the worst synagogue I’ve ever seen in my whole life!”

Takes two to tango. Why don’t the hot 50 year-old women hook up with 50-year old men?
Highbrow magazine personal ads are full of “50 yr old vivacious blonde seeks financially comfortable older man”.

Been having some computer problems so I only have infrequent access.
I’m sorry I missed the Ken Mehlman thread, but I wanted to post this in his honor.
[Video]Many years ago, my supervisor called me into her office. We were actually personal friends (and oddly enough, she’s gay), but anyway, when I got there, she said to me, “I want you to read this e-mail and tell me if you think it’s for real.”It was from Ken Mehlman’s office. A couple who are friends of mine and my parents, they’re great because they’re precisely in between my scene and my parents’ scene, I can joke with them about cartoons and internet memes, and my parents play cards with them and go out a lot, the lady is late 50’s, the guy is my age (mid 30s) and they’re just so precisely matched it’s uncanny.
