I have never understood protests. With all of the communication venues and government resources we have to express our opinions, select representatives, enact and change laws... why just march around with a placard showing people how badly you can draw and spell?
Pep rallies are one thing, but protests? It used to be you could count on the Libs to be the ones stewing in the heat with funny hats. Now we have Cons doing the same thing?
Huh?

We (America) lost a great opportunity to show we support moderate Islam and do not bow down to radicals when we balked at the Park51 Mosque. Instead we gave the radicals (those who would kill us and the moderate Muslims) more ammo for their war on the West.

The Islamics blew up the WTC, and now they want to build a Sharia Victory mosque.
Just like those Christians who shoot doctors, bomb abortion clinics, whose priests raped little kids, and who kill kids for witchcraft, and they still want to build churches all over the place.
The Protestors seem to like a broad brush, might as well use it on them as well.

The KKK is an explicitly Christian organization. You can't even join unless you profess a strong and abiding Christian faith. Why do moderate Christians insist on building churches in black neighborhoods, given the nature of the horrible crimes committed in the name of the Christian God during our history? Why can't they just restrict themselves to white neighborhoods?
(If you think this argument is incredibly stupid, sabra412, then you are one small step away from understanding that you are a flaming bigot, and possibly doing something to change that.)

But the throngs included an ample number of 9/11 mourners, too, who joined the anti-mosque crowd of about 1,500 after attending the ground zero memorial ceremony.
Elizabeth Meehan, 51, was among about 2,000 rallying to support the mosque. Meehan, who rode a bus to the rally from her home in Saratoga, N.Y., about 180 miles away, said she is an observant Christian and felt it was important for Christians to speak in favor of religious freedom.

That only makes sense if the people doing it were doing it as representatives of all Islam.
Do priest-molesters do that as representatives of all Catholicism?
You do not get to hold the actions of a small group of people (the 9/11 terrorists) against Rauf unless you can demonstrate that they are, in fact, connected. That they are of the same religion is not good enough, unless you agree that the principle holds for all.

Colbert Hints At Rally Again As 'Truthiness' Movement Donates $100K To Charity
Last night on "The Report," Stephen Colbert continued to taunt his fans with hints at a future "Truthiness" rally to counteract Glenn Beck's at the Lincoln Memorial. Since the Internet has been petitioning him to hold a rally for the last two weeks, Colbert and Jon Stewart have acknowledged the request, and have since battled with each other over who will make an announcement first. Colbert says he won't budge until Stewart makes a move.
Still, Colbert seemed happy that the subject of the rally was last week's biggest Internet meme, proving what he's always known, that "meme means 'Me! Me!'" He also reminded us that like Glenn Beck's rally, it can only happen if God or a prophetic goose tells Colbert to do it. Due to this, people keep sending stuffed geese to him in the mail, and members of the Colbert Nation even went so far as to release doves into the air outside Colbert's studio, sending a message that he "should hold a rally or at least bring a shotgun to work."

re: #57 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)
One thing Colbert did not mention, but likely will tomorrow, is that Reddit, the social network responsible for the rally idea, have been working hard to prove they are serious. According to Time.com, in just one day alone, "the Restoring Truthiness movement has donated $100,000 and counting to educational charities through DonorsChoose.org, an organization of which Colbert is a board member."
Nice to see someone doing something positive with money instead of holding pointless rallies to feed egos and fighting for tax breaks for the wealthy.

This video demonstrates what really irritated me about how the press covered this event. For example on CNN they would frequently summarize the positions of the pro- and anti-Park 51 demonstrations and for the anti- it would always be something like, "while they believe Imam Rauf has the absolute right to build it, they feel proceeding would be disrespectful to the victims of 9/11 and therefore Rauf should choose not to exercise his right." That's of course a way too charitable and moderate paraphrasing of their position.
These folks are in fact terrified of Islam and Muslims. All the propaganda on the topic they consume make them see Muslims as a dangerous, conspiratorial, monolithic group that secretly intends them harm. Many, if they could, would support denying Muslims constitutionally protected rights.

Wow! In retrospect he was probably trying to walk a fine line between supporting the movement he recorded and keeping "radicals" from taking over. Of course I cannot know what was going on in his head at the time. Those were wierd times to begin with and J. Edgar Hoover wasn't helping.
I suppose someone asked to monitor the activities of the Tea Partiers (or any other political movement) for the FBI today would be in a similar situation. Lots of "not much to report" punctuated by a few radical wannabees.
Today most of the FBI/GBI operatives I knew/know are mostly interested in keeping drugs off the street and kids safe from exploitation.

Home of "Ice Giants" thaws, shows pre-Viking hunts
JUVFONNA, Norway (Reuters) – Climate change is exposing reindeer hunting gear used by the Vikings' ancestors faster than archaeologists can collect it from ice thawing in northern Europe's highest mountains.
"It's like a time machine...the ice has not been this small for many, many centuries," said Lars Piloe, a Danish scientist heading a team of "snow patch archaeologists" on newly bare ground 1,850 meters (6,070 ft) above sea level in mid-Norway.
Specialized hunting sticks, bows and arrows and even a 3,400-year-old leather shoe have been among finds since 2006 from a melt in the Jotunheimen mountains, the home of the "Ice Giants" of Norse mythology.

Which is beyond stupid, really. In order for Sharia law to be imposed on the US, we'd literally have to give up our entire system of government. Not happening. Ever.
But the people protesting this have no faith at all in our system of government. They distrust it, they don't understand how it works, and they suspect that it goes against God's law. How can they trust it to protect them from Creeping Sharia?

His followers build their god's churches in and around Aztec's holy grounds, and have been, and are still having all sorts of festivals, and celebrations stamping all over Aztec's hollow-grounds.
I wish one of the interviewers would mention this, it would be funny to see confusion, or plain ignorance on these people's faces.

The TIE Fighter Pilot Who Saved The Day in 'Star Wars'
In the original Star Wars movie, the Rebels almost didn't make it. Despite the fact that Han and Luke saved Leia, they stupidly led the Empire right to the rebel's doorstep. But they saved the day, right? Luke blows up the Death Star mere moments before it ends the rebellion in a single shot of sweet lasery explosiveness.
But if it weren't for one random imperial TIE fighter pilot, evil would have won the day.

I just had to pop in here because there was a really interesting interview on NPR's Fresh Air yesterday. Apparently "they" did go elsewhere in great numbers during "the great migration" despite laws to prevent it-Blacks were prevented from boarding trains for the north and some states passed laws in the 1910s mandating $25,000 "permits" to recruit Black workers to the north.

I'd bet the Tea Party and OathKeepers are a couple of the most infiltrated organizations in FBI history.
Hopefully they've gotten better at it than in the days when they were monitoring women's lib groups in Berkeley and opened a file on 'Elizabeth Katie Stanton', a leader who was referred to frequently in speeches.

Good news! That should knock him down a few points in the polls.
Bad news! She'll be only two hours from me. I can feel the pain and impending death of some of my brain.
Then again, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. I survived 14 years with Boehner as my Representative, so perhaps I've developed some immunity to Teh Stupid.

"Tricerahops"--makes me think of a drunken dinosaur stumbling around, shouting, "Where's the frigging bathroom in this place?"
