There is a global right wing movement ascendant, and pushing toward fascism.
This always fucking happens when the economy is doing very badly. there must be some kind of "mistrust and paranoia" gene that gets turned on when people are under high amounts of stress, and makes us kill each other in huge numbers.
Humans are so fucking stupid, I am sometimes ashamed to be one. My cat might lick his asshole, but he doesn't blame random group X for random problem Y, so I think he compares favorably to the average human.

re: #4 Idle Drifter

I tend to agree in principle. However, it would seem to be the case that when large numbers of bigots speak up at once, crazy and often very bad things happen.
I mean, sure, I like to know where everybody really stands, but when destructive behaviors are openly displayed for prolonged periods, it has a way of breaking down the hard-won social taboos about racism developed in the western world over the past 40 years or so. Those taboos serve a valuable purpose, and were won at no small cost.
Now it is starting to seem that it was a temporary gain. Two steps, forward, on back, is the best we can really hope for over the long haul anyway. We still have a long way to go.

In case anyone had any illusions left about who the Sweden Democrats are...
from the earlier LGF posting,
The History of the Sweden Democrats
The Sweden Democrats formed a youth group, SDU, Sweden Democratic Youth. The first chairman was Robert Vesterlund. Today, he is more known as the leading figure in the network behind the Nazi homepage Info-14 (Truumax note: One of the most vile swedish neo-nazi homepages in existence).
The Info-14 site (Google cache linked) is currently running a story entitled: "A Hero Has Passed Away, Rest in Peace Bruce Pierce", honoring the 1984 assassin of Alan Berg, and founder of The Order, who died in August.
More about Pierce from the SPLC:

More bad news from Sweden...
Swedish Neo-Nazi Party Wins Local Seat
In the shadow of the Sweden Democrats' highly publicized electoral success last night, Expo have learned that the neo-Nazi party Svenskarnas parti (The Swedes' Party) have won a seat in the Grästorp municipality in western Sweden. The party, founded in 1994 under the name Nationalsocialistisk front, has thus won its first local mandate.
Party leader Daniel Höglund has accomplished what no one thought possible: making room for a neo-Nazi party in a democratically elected assembly. But when the Swedish Election Authority presented its final tally of Grästorp, it was revealed that Svenskarnas parti had indeed won 2,8 percent of the vote. The 102 votes were enough to secure one mandate for the party. The chairwoman of the local electoral board, Agnetha Wallander, confirms the result.
Two years ago, the party was known under the name Nationalsocialistisk front. It was dismantled and relaunched under a new name, Folkfronten (The People's Front), in November 2008. The purpose of this makeover was to appeal to a broader range of prospective voters. The vulgar anti-Semitism was toned down, the annual celebration of Adolf Hitler's birthday scrapped and the Nazi symbols removed. Instead, the party began to focus on criticizing multiculturalism, portraying themselves as a radical alternative to the Sweden Democrats.
This is the first time since the 1940's that Sweden has seen a Nazi party in a democratically elected assembly.
This is becoming a very popular formula for Nazi parties all over Europe.

Yep hiding the outright Nazi rhetoric seems to allow them to mainstream themselves more easier. Did anyone see gosh I want to say it was a BBC documentary called Young, Nazi, and Proud. British journalist whom is Jewish followed the BNP's youth leader, Mark something other there around and at the very end of the documentary casually revealed that he was Jewish. Nuts and bolts politics here...
Sweden's ruling coalition heads for minority government
However, Reinfeldt's majority was undermined by the far right, who have sought to harness anti-immigrant sentiment in a country where one in seven residents is foreign-born.The strong performance by the Sweden Democrats and the prospect of a hung parliament looked likely to trigger a fall in the krona against the euro and volatility on the Stockholm financial markets.
The governing coalition and the centre-left opposition bloc have pledged not to join forces with the Sweden Democrats.
The rise of the far-right party, which has moved away from its skinhead roots under a youthful leadership and the slogan "Tradition and Security", reflects a wider anti-immigrant backlash across Europe, as recession and budget cuts take hold. In their campaign, the Sweden Democrats raised the spectre of creeping Islamicisation of society and promised to crack down on immigration.
It would not be the first time that an anti-immigrant grouping has entered Sweden's parliament. A short-lived rightwing protest won nearly 7% of the vote in 1991.

Sweden remained a major trading partner with Germany during the 2nd World War, supplying iron ore the Germans used to build the panzers, rifles and artillery that killed so many Americans. It kills me. Turned into the fine art of frame flipping:
From Ta-Nehisi Coates
But like all bigotry, the most potent component of racism is frame-flipping--positioning the bigot as the actual victim. So the gay do not simply want to marry, they want to convert our children into sin. The Jews do not merely want to be left in peace, they actually are plotting world take-over. And the blacks are not actually victims of American power, but beneficiaries of the war against hard-working whites. This is a respectable, more sensible, bigotry, one that does not seek to name-call, preferring instead change the subject and strawman. Thus segregation wasn't necessary to keep the n*****s in line, it was necessary to protect the honor of white women

In Bangkok the late Johan Winlöf was for 15 years known as a well liked, successful businessman and creative entrepreneur. Only a few knew that the Swede was covering up a much darker past. For years he was the leader of Sweden's Neo-Nazis and had several convictions for violent behaviour.

It's intended to be a mark of distinction. When Charles bans the troll, the troll registers on the Stalker Blog or Correspondence Committee and posts the comment as a statement of how it "brought the truth to the Progressive Den of Thieves that LFG has become". Then it spews about how Charles is a "tyrant". It's both sad and lame at the same time.

Florida Dems send mailer with GOP candidate's Social Security number
The campaign of Republican Allen West is fuming over a negative mailer sent by the Florida Democratic Party revealing West's Social Security number.
West, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, poses a much tougher challenge to Rep. Ron Klein (D-Fla.) this fall after losing to him by a 10-point margin in 2008.
The mailer highlighted an old tax lien against West, but the accompanying documentation included in the mailer failed to black out West's Social Security number and the employer identification number for his wife's business.
The state Democratic Party has called the error "an inadvertent mistake," but West pinned the blame on his Democratic opponent in a statement.
"Ron Klein has clearly crossed a line," West said. "I'm not yet sure the potential damage that might come to my wife and me, and it makes me sick to think of what could happen to my daughters. My entire family is at risk of identity theft."

What may have some of the pundits and bloggers on the right a bit jittery is that the xenophobes in Sweden (and elsewhere) are being (quite rightly) labeled "far right", which strengthens the idea that "far right"=xenophobe/racist.
The wingnut crowd has no where to go other than: (1) into neo-fascism, or (2) to actually moderate and become sane again.
That fork in the road has been reached by a few and we see the choices they are making.

I have a shredder and use it. I just brought up the point that ID theft is like being mugged. It happens, it's traumatic, but an industry has been built on something that most likely will not happen to you. And the fear ! !
I have personally known one person to have their identity "stolen", and it was my deceased grandmother, because one of her less scrupulous caregivers had enough of her personal info to open card accounts in her name posthumously
Stanley is right in that there's a ton of id theft industry that purposefully scares the Christ out of people, makes people believe that oh shit they're all coming to get you

Hey, Bristol outscored The Hoff:
Bristol Palin Not So Modest for "Dancing" Debut
Bristol Palin said that she would be the most modestly dressed contestant on the season premiere of "Dancing With the Stars," but she had a surprise for viewers Monday night. The daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin started her routine wearing an outfit that covered most of her body but soon ripped it off to reveal a short, fringed red dress. The judges said she had good hip action and footwork but that she needs to loosen up.
Her famous mother was supposed to be in the audience, but she did not appear to be present. Bristol Palin said that she hoped not to embarrass her mother. She received 18 of 30 points from the judges.
[...]
Comedian Margaret Cho, reality star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and actor-singer David Hasselhoff tied for last place with 15 points each.

This is just one item from 2004 --[Link: www.fbi.gov...] It began with a crooked "insider" who had access to a nearly unending supply of personal consumer information.
It ended up the largest case of identity theft ever investigated and prosecuted in the U.S.--with 30,000 victims across the U.S. and Canada and millions of dollars in losses.
It's also a cautionary tale for you--the consumer.
First, the crime. The "insider" was Philip Cummings, a help desk employee with a Long Island, NY, company that provided special software to its client companies--like banks and other financial institutions--allowing them to download consumer credit reports from the three major commercial credit reporting agencies.
Cummings had access to his clients' codes and passwords, which meant he could download virtually all the consumer credit reports he wanted. And he did, after being approached by a ring of Nigerian nationals who offered to pay for copies. Even after leaving the company, Cummings continued using his inside knowledge to download and sell credit reports to this identity theft ring for another two years.
The damage. Considerable. Thousands of personal savings accounts were looted. Fake charges were racked up on credit cards. Addresses on bank accounts were changed so that new credit, check, and ATM cards were mailed directly to the thieves.

DoJ Charges 53 In NJ In Identity-Theft, Fraud Takedown
The Department of Justice on Thursday charged 53 individuals in New Jersey for allegedly selling identity documents that were used to commit various acts of fraud, including opening lines of credit.
In addition to the 43 individuals charged in a single conspiracy, six other criminal complaints charge 10 additional individuals with identity theft and fraud offenses. The Justice Department said 47 defendants were arrested Thursday morning, while one is in state custody on unrelated charges and five remain at large.
"The activity in this instance was a virtual crime superstore, with one-stop shopping for a variety of criminal needs," according to FBI agent Michael B. Ward. "The criminal activity was sophisticated, and the extent of the fraud committed by this group is believed to be substantial, if not staggering."
... The group also allegedly built up credit scores associated with the IDs. By attaching the IDs to the credit-card accounts of various co-conspirators, the team was able to increase the credit scores associated with the Chinese IDs to between 700 and 800. The highest score possible is 850.
They then allegedly conspired to use the fraudulent IDs with good credit scores to open and obtain bank accounts, credit cards, lines of credit and loans--including loans guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

A national crime symposium focusing on identity theft gets underway in Brisbane today.Fraud experts say one in five Australians have fallen victim to identity theft and it is costing Australia around $3 billion a year.
It is one of the fastest growing criminal industries and local and international fraud experts will spend the next three days in Brisbane sharing ideas on how to stop it.
The conference will investigate the sharp rise of internet hacking, romance and email scams, credit card skimming.
Professor Jonathan Rusch from the United States Department of Justice is expected to present international statistics showing identity theft is becoming the fastest growing segment of criminal activity in the world.

Jimmy Carter: My role is 'superior' to those of the other ex-presidents
During an interview set to air tonight on NBC, former President Jimmy Carter tells Brian Williams that he feels his role as an an activist in troubled parts of the world is "superior" to those of other former presidents. Carter was responding to a question about the now-famous photo of President Obama with the four living ex-presidents -- Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Carter -- in which Carter appeared alone and off to the side while the others seemed to converse collegially.

Carter's comments validate my mom's assertion that Carter was the best president ever. He rationale was that he built homes for the homeless. I pointed out to her that he did that after he was president but she said that proves he was a good man, therefore the best president.

Jimmy Carter's friends post a foul disgusting video on YouTube...
Schalit family attacks Hamas posting of new Youtube clip
Hamas posted a video of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit on Youtube on Monday, suggesting he would be killed if a deal was not soon reached.
In the animated video, two masked men are shown standing on either side of Gilad Schalit in a dark room, with one of them holding an AK-47 assualt rifle.
At the end of the 24-second video, gun shots are heard as the movie goes black and the words "Is the mission completed?" are seen written in Arabic.
In response the video, the Schalit family released a statement saying that, "The Schalit family is troubled that instead of worrying about the hundreds of Palestinian prisoners jailed in Israel, some of which could have been at home long ago, Hamas leaders have chosen to continue holding Gilad, our son, captive as a hostage for their political aspirations, an act which is an ongoing war crime according to international law." The statement continued, "In addition, Hamas leaders in Gaza and Damascus are not hesitant to add, and even take a new approach, to the psychological warfare of the lowest level against the Schalit family, instead of respecting international law and conventions."

I checked and Nordland was the Scandinavian SS division. The Dutch division was Nederland and the French one Charlemange.
I have major interest in WWII history so accuracy is important to me.
There was also an SS Wallonia division, which from its name must have hailed from the French-speaking part of Belgium.
SS Charlemagne was one of the key formations defending Berlin at the end of the war. Talk about damned. They can't surrender. The Russians will kill them if they do, and if the Russians don't, they'll be in the dock for treason in their home countries. So they get a foretaste of hell in the Stalingrad-like rubble of Berlin. Shells fall everywhere, in an iron rain. The Russians stream everywhere, dying in droves because the rain falls on the Reds and the SS alike. But no matter, as always, Russian numbers are inexhaustible. Sooner or later, some tommy-gunner shoots a round with your number on it, and you're dispatched from the foretaste direct to the real thing.
And on top of all that, nobody's sorry for you. SS is bad enough. SS traitors is worse. SS traitors fighting on when the war is over, it just doesn't get any more inexcusable.

Report: Hamas Selling Humanitarian Aid for Profit
A journalist who visited Gaza found that Hamas is confiscating humanitarian goods donated by the international community and forcing Gaza Arabs to pay for them. The journalist, Mitchell Prothero, wrote an article about attitudes towards Hamas for the UAE paper The National.
Prothero spoke to a commander in the Islamic Jihad terrorist group, who complained about being forced to purchase medicine for his son when the medicine, donated by Norway, was clearly labeled “Not for resale.”
“I had to go to a Hamas pharmacy to make sure the pills weren't fake or made from poor materials in Egypt,” he explained. “If you want real medicine, you have to buy the aid Europe sends us.”
A Gaza businessman said, “If you're not in Hamas, you get nothing.”
This should be brought up at the UN meetings this week.

Terrorist arrested in Chicago...
Lebanese immigrant charged in Wrigleyville bomb plot
Sami Samir Hassoun carried what he thought was a bomb — fashioned from a paint can and hidden inside a shopping bag — on a street near Wrigley Field more crowded than usual Saturday night after a festive concert by the Dave Matthews Band, authorities say.
Moments before, the Lebanese immigrant had allegedly instructed his cohort to dial down the timer to detonate in 20 minutes, saying half an hour was too long.
Hassoun dropped the device in a trash can just feet from one of the neighborhood's popular bars, turned and headed back toward the vehicle when a swarm of FBI agents and Chicago police arrested him.
In the months before, authorities charged, Hassoun had plans ranging from the grandiose to the more simple, but his goal was chilling: inject terror into the hearts of Chicagoans and undermine city government with repeated attacks.
He talked of tainting the water supply, assassinating Mayor Richard Daley and attacking the city's hot spots downtown and on the North Side, according to a federal complaint filed Monday. And to rattle the city's nerves, he'd explode or ignite car bombs over and over, authorities said.
"You park the car and let it boom," the 22-year-old is alleged to have said to an informant.

Continuing the quote:
Authorities said Hassoun wasn't motivated by religious or political views but rather by a bizarre desire to undermine the mayor's political support and allow an associate to take control of the city. He also hoped to profit from the scheme by being paid for his terrorism work by supporters, the charges alleged.

It's not surface temperatures that drive hurricanes, it's temperature differentials. Jupiter has storms, though it's frigid.
Here on earth, as AGW continues apace, the heating is more intense in the Arctic than anywhere else. This might lead to reduced temperature differentials and fewer or less intense hurricanes. AGW is real and we're in for all sorts of trouble as a consequence, but the jury isn't in on how things will go with hurricanes.

Please don't try to deflect like that. You don't like it when others do it. Doesn't matter if Allan West is an asshole (I'm not saying he is, BTW), its still wrong to send out mailers containing his SSN.
Of course it is.
But what is the upside in doing it intentionally? What does it get his campaign?
Be smart: it was a mistake.
This isn't like SC push polls where the "mistake" leads to an obvious political benefit. It's a screw up, unless you can demonstrate the good that comes to West's campaign for doing this.
So if you want to crap on the guy's campaign for being careless and sloppy, that's fair. But this "what a low blow" nonsense is cheap posturing.
