The debt? Failed spending bills?
The debt was primarily created under Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2. Look at the numbers!
Lost jobs? Excuse me? The GOP killed the Jobs bill!
Special interests? Since when is the religious right not a special interest?!?

Cultural dependency?
Tax cuts for the rich are small businesses? Are you serious?

She's lying.
The taxes on a business are not on the "before they pay their employees" gross revenue. That's utter bullshit.

re: #24 Varek Raith
Lol.
Okay, I'll admit that Rash is wrong on global warming. But he gets a lot of other issues right.
Same-Sex Marriage:
I will not be part of any effort to deny any American the pursuit of happiness. What part of the Constitution gives the government the right to decide who can be married and who can’t? Marriage licenses need to be eliminated. George and Martha Washington didn’t have one.
Americans who wanted to get married weren't required to be licensed until the time of the War for Southern Independence (aka Civil War) when the government would not allow blacks and whites to intermarry. Now they’re being used to discriminate against gays.
Discrimination by the government is not only unconstitutional, it’s reprehensible.
The War on Drugs:
Drug laws must be approached sensibly. If there is not a victim, there is not a crime.Plants such as marijuana (cannabanoids) should be removed from the Controlled Substances Schedule immediately.
Currently, the government is focused on arresting the user and cutting off the supplier’s down line. Targeting smugglers, instead, seems appropriate.
I would never advocate a minor smoking pot, but jail certainly isn’t the place a teenager belongs for getting caught with a joint. And, if a full grown adult chooses to use marijuana, he/she should enjoy their right to do just that.
The government has no authority to control what a person puts in his or her body. Since it took a constitutional amendment to make alcohol illegal, shouldn’t it have taken a constitutional amendment to enact the prohibition of drugs?
Illegal Immigration:
... Unquestionably, there are people who have been in this country illegally for 20 years or more. Many of them were children when their parents chose to violate our immigration laws. Those children grew up here and only know the United States as their home. I would like to think that more than not have become productive members of our society. I see no reason to disallow citizenship to those brought here illegally as children.

re: #42 Varek Raith
Yeah, but, an alarming number of Libertarians are anti science.
Why?
Much of the denial comes from a skeptical analysis of many of the proposed policies to combat climate change. Consider what environmentalist Bjorn Lomborg said:
What is your position on global warming?
Global warming is real - it is man-made and it is an important problem. But it is not the end of the world. You have been branded a climate-change denier. Have you changed your mind?
No, I haven't changed my mind, but the global warming debate is so polarised that there is space for only two possible viewpoints: either it's the end of the world, or you think it is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated. Because I dared to be sceptical, a lot of people pushed me into the deniers' camp. Are you still sceptical?
I have been sceptical all along, but about the solution. Our current solution - the Kyoto approach - doesn't work. What's not working?
The UN summits are PR vehicles for politicians so they can all get together and look like they're doing something. What's your view of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?
I would say 90 per cent of what the panel tells us is right, which is pretty good for a very complex subject. But the UN-led policy solutions are incredibly poor.So what's your solution?
We need to invest dramatically in green energy, making solar panels so cheap that everybody wants them. Nobody wanted to buy a computer in 1950, but once they got cheap, everyone bought them.

All I hear from her is the hastily memorized talking points from 3 X 5 cards given to her during a marathon sessions with Luntz and Associations debate coaching at $5,000 an hour. All she is doing is stringing together pre-digested phrases that there is NO WAY she wrote. She can't even pronounce some of the big words correctly and clearly does not understand the underlying issues she is talking about. Does this sound like a person that knows any thing at all about economics, national security, or creating political partnerships???

In case someone has missed it:
Atul Gawande's comparison of vastly different health care costs in two areas of Texas under the same regulatory environment, after tort reform had passed:
[Link: www.newyorker.com...]
Doctors order unnecessary tests just to protect themselves, he said. Everyone thought the lawyers here were worse than elsewhere.
That explanation puzzled me. Several years ago, Texas passed a tough malpractice law that capped pain-and-suffering awards at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Didn’t lawsuits go down?
“Practically to zero,” the cardiologist admitted.
Did not bring down medical costs one whit.

In other news, for those that want to get scientific.
The post about thermo that covers entropy is up. It also debunks multiple common wingnut canards.
[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
For example:
And here we come to the part where we nail the evolution deniers hard. DNA is nothing more than a coded string with many bits of data. We have really good cellular mechanisms for copying it from one generation to the next. But what is a mutation if not a change in the DNA? Eventually over time, all sorts of errors will creep in. If those “errors” end up being beneficial, then they get copied to the next generation that makes more babies. If not, they die off. In fact, on the level of encoded information, evolution is exactly an example of entropy increasing.
For those that wish to dig deeper, I invite you to go into Shannon’s Law.

Christine O'Donnell Says U.S. Hasn't Finished Job Of Fighting 'Soviets' In Afghanistan (VIDEO)
Well if you remember when we were fighting the Soviets over there in Afghanistan in the '80s and '90s, we did not finish the job, so now we have a responsibility to finish the job and if you are gonna make these politically correct statements that it's costing us too much money, you are threatening the security of our homeland.

We weren't fighting the Soviets, the mujahadeen was... Pakistan was...
We slipped the Mooj a twenty and some beer now and then. Well, not the beer, but you get my point.
I have gone in my lifetime (and I'm not forty yet) from hearing people say "Mujahedin" reverentially to saying "Jihadist" as a cuss. The same people, mind you.
As a bissel linguistics fan, I find this entertaining.

Eeevilution!
Some of my SCA pals say that occasionally they run across someone who tries to explain that the Middle Ages were BAD, on account of they were before the Reformation restored the One True Church (theirs), and this is why the period is called Mid-EVIL.
Sometimes folk etymology blows your mind.

She might have said "graduate studies" instead of "graduate degree". In any case it wasn't graduate anything.
She did an ever better job of parsing and has come up with a new phrase to describe it - "graduate fellowship" sounds all important, huh? Is it an actual degree in anything at all?.
Nope.

I didn't catch the exact quote. But she did say the word "graduate" and it wasn't even a graduate program. Just some dumb week long "fellowship".
Friend of mine used to send her kids to this school program that was designed to encourage African-American kids from the inner city to seek academic achievement. They made a big deal out graduations. She had pictures on her desk at work of both her boys in formal caps and gowns, being given diplomas for kindergarten graduation.
Perhaps this fellowship had a similar idea.

Right-Wing Radicals. I didn't realize it was also Reagan's initials until I started using it. It's my way of defining people who are, well, right-wing and radical, without using vaguer terms like 'conservative' that sane people might still be using.

Actually, that was the better part of the medical establishment in the early going. Dr. Ignaz Semmelweiss, (yes, Jewish) was kvetching about how puerperal fever seemed to be transmitted by doctors, and how they should wash up between patients.
It took a long time for his point to be granted and acted on. Even today, many hospitals could do a better job at keeping stuff clean, and the cost of doing so would be well justified by the improvements that could be expected in patient outcomes.
There has been substantial improvement on this score over the past decade.

Surely it depends on the risk involved? I may be on the banks of an icy river, and someone dying of hypothermia out in the river. I could go and try my hand at rescue. But how good am I at withstanding the cold? There is nothing admirable in suicide by fame-seeking. I might try it. But only if I thought I had some sort of chance to bring it off, and even then, probably not unless I thought I had some sort of chance to live through the effort.

Well. They were fortunate. But then I guess I could be seen as promoting an idea of good fortune. The geology and circumstances allowed for them to attain a survivable situation. The mine itself was built and designed around survivability even though it failed. So there again I would say if it wasn't for the good works of man they wouldn't have survived. Today the Washington Post's gay kapo Jonathan Capehart shares a video interview he conducted on Monday with senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett. She clearly states a belief that Minnesota gay teen Justin Aarberg, who committed suicide in July after being bullied, made a "lifestyle choice."
...What an outrage to claim that the 15-year-old Aarberg made a choice to be gay, and that sexual orientation is a lifestyle. Did she get her talking points from Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council? It's doubly offensive that Capehart makes no effort to point out how dangerous Jarrett's thinking is.
If Capehart were willing to risk his White House access to events like a Latina Fiesta night, he might have taken his tongue off Jarrett and Obama's posteriors and challenged her employment of "lifestyle choice" in speaking about the support of the Aarberg family for their gay son and brother.
With friends like Jarrett and gay reporters such as Capehart, why worry about our enemies at the Family Research Council, National Organization for Marriage and the Mormon Church?

Obama doesn't think illegal aliens should be deported?
Since when?
Since he won't allow Arizona to even identify them? Since he won't build the fence? Since everything. Obama doesn't want to rock the boat. The trend is his friend, and the trend will be allowed to run its course uninterrupted. Bush, before him, didn't much want to rock the boat either. U.S. policy, on both sides of the aisle, is to allow a considerable amount of "illegal" immigration.

I don't think the law demands suicide...Most of us would dial 911..
To ignore those in an accident without acting in a humane way would be negligent and inhumane and below our best instincts...
I believe some places have what is called a good Samaritan act...Like real humans would need that law

I went digging online for some stuff we talked about the other day. I'm trying to find the academic basis to define "age appropriate" for sex education. How did education choose the timing? It's your field, any hints? What with all the noise about abstinence vs the rest it's tough to find.
The earlier the better, basically. The biggest benefit is that the earlier you educate kids about sex, the more of the depressingly large number of them who are being sexually abused will actually report it.
The timing is chosen based on politics, on when parents will agree to it. Not on any sort of science.

That's hilarious.
I was a state gov't employee.
In certain years, we had a candidate running for gov (and he won, 4 times actually, but is now in prison) - anyhooo - state employees ALWAYS got a pay raise every year of each of his 4 terms.
I never voted for him. I thought he was a crook, he WAS a crook as his current prison sentence shows - and I never voted for him, though I knew it would mean money in my pocket.
If Pat Sajak or anybody else thinks that government employees are complete idiots and totally selfish people who can't think beyond their own pocketbooks - well, then, THEY are the idiots.

There is also such a thing as being age appropriate. When a three year old asks why mommy's belly is getting big and how they know there is going to be a new brother or sister, it is quite fine to say that grown up men and women make babies together and shift the conversation to how the baby is growing in the mother.
As they get older, information can be parceled out as it is appropriate. Certainly, an understanding (a theoretical one) of the whole works needs to be in place by puberty, because that is when kids can start reproducing themselves.

Many times others aren't as fortunate.

I'm a supporter of the right of people to vote and have their votes count. If AZ wants this law, and NV wants that law, etc., then even though the laws may specify completely opposite policies, provided they're constitutional, I support their right to make the decision and see how they like the consequences.
We shall see, eventually, whether the AZ law is constitutional. I don't know. If it's unconstitutional, it should be struck down. If it is constitutional, then AZ will find out whether they like the consequences or not.

I don't think we need the courts to tell us if a law that allowed cops to force people to prove they were citizens without the people in question having committed any crimes is constitutional or not.
Of course said law has since had the offending aspects of it filed off luckily...

Sure. But that proves that 2 days of food and water can be used to hydrate and sustain 33 men for 17 days in an emergency. The survivability was due to the nature and science of human biology and the ability of the human brain to provide coping mechanisms through adjustments in typical behavior.

re: #485 LudwigVanQuixote
Shifting the conversation, though, is only for the sake of the adults. There is no harm to kids in explaining what sex is when they're young. Until puberty hits, it's going to be of very mild interest to them-- educating them about it doesn't lead to prepubescent sexual activity.
There is a very small correlation between sexual education and earlier sexual experimentation (post-pubescent); there is a much stronger correlation between sexual education and safe sex and fewer risky sexual behaviors.
That being said, you're totally right that there isn't a need to educating kids on the mechanics of sex before puberty, but they do need to know, explicitly, that there are adults who will force children to have sex with them and that this is wrong and they should never feel that it is their fault and that they should tell someone whenever it happens. We dance around that issue far too much; protecting their sense of innocence leaves them vulnerable to actual harm.

How fucked up is this?
Military ballots may not count in Illinois
The U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether the state of Illinois missed the deadline for mailing absentee ballots to members of the military and other overseas American voters as part of a new federal overseas voting law.
Cris Cray, Director of Legislation at the Illinois State Board of Elections, says not all of Illinois' 110 jurisdictions were compliant with the 2009 Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act (MOVE).
The law requires every state to mail their absentee ballots 45 days prior to Election Day to overseas troops, government employees and other Americans who want to vote from abroad.
Cray says she is currently compiling data from each of Illinois' jurisdictions to determine which were compliant and which were delinquent. Cray said it's possible the ballots may not be counted because the state was tardy in sending them out.

Agree with you.
My kid didn't let me dance around, she knew I was not answering her questions to the fullest extent, and wouldn't let go of the question. She was six.
Fortunately - there a lot of good books that help parents with these conversations, in age appropriate ways, and I suggest every parent have one or two of these books on hand by the time your children or 3 or so, because you never know when the topic is going to come up, and your kid is going to insist on an answer.
We have in town here, the Woman's Hospital, which is where babies are born (also caters to women's health in other ways, as well). They have regular series of classes for parents and their daughters (or sons) to explain the differences between boys and girls, puberty, changes, etc. These are an excellent starting point for conversations with your kid about sex.

Things like this are awful, but they need to be talked about. The rates of incidence are so depressingly high. I think a large part of it is because our society places so little trust in kids and teenagers; there's such a burden of shame attached to abuse that it means that they generally won't reveal it. Sometimes they will, if they have someone they really trust, but shame is a hell of a silencer.
I think it helps to reduce the shame for kids for them to hear that other people have had this happen, and come out the other side of it.

re: #507 Obdicut
I'm really sorry to hear that. I myself was raped at the age of eight, repeatedly; at least please know that such an incident doesn't doom the child to a lifetime of misery and rage. I'm a really happy guy, married to a wonderful girl, and my life is full of joys. I'm sure you'll be there for your foster-daughter and her daughter; that's what's needed more than anything else. The shame is the most dangerous part.
And I just don't get how anyone can see children as sexual objects. Didn't make sense to me then, doesn't make sense to me now.
Gawd, that's awful.
You are absolutely right that there is no shame in being a victim of that kind of thing. I once had a student who'd been put through a humdinger of an ordeal, kidnapped, raped, the whole nine yards. She got away and managed to call down the law on the bad guys. It was in our papers, but they didn't say who it was, so I didn't know---except she needed an excused absence so she could testify at the trial.
I told her we were all as proud as could be of her.
They were convicted and sent off to long, long prison terms.
I deliberately forgot her name.

Seriously fucked up. I smell the Dem Machine up to its tricks. Thankfully, Bill Brady's campaign and the Chicago Tribune will do their level best to see those votes counted. I even expect Pat Quinn to make an effort to get the ballots counted (he is an honest man, just not the right man for the job). Our troops deserve nothing less.

That is very kind of you to share. I hope the youngster can do as well. Mom is a woman on a mission. To get her kids back from the state, since the now imprisoned hubby claimed she was complicit. We talk often. Help as we can. I want to just bring her "home" and hold her like back when.
Those who see children as sex objects must get help. Or a good tall bridge with a diving board. I'm fine either way.

Reads like a minor screw up:
St. Clair County Clerk Bob Delaney said 1,297 overseas military ballots — many of them connected with Scott Air Force Base — didn’t get sent out until Oct. 4, primarily because he was waiting for a decision on whether the Constitution Party would be allowed on the ballot.
So we're talking 1,297 votes and the Feds are looking into it. I'm willing to bet the Feds will give a green light considering the politically charged nature of military votes.

re: #518 jamesfirecat
Just to show no hards feelings and that in point of fact I am open to debate, let me hear your sugestions for what we can do to identify and deport illegal immgrants without hassling our native population and legal ones and I'll tell you if I support them or not.
That said I do consider the "border fence" a pathetic dream that will never work. Even if we built a million miles high, illegals would just sail across the Gulf of Mexico to get to the USA.
We could arrange that drivers licenses be given security features so strong that forgery was effectively impossible. Next, make it an option that anyone who has a passport, or can qualify for one, can get their drivers license have built into the security features a citizenship/legal resident code. Authorized law enforcement personnel, when "swiping" the card to see if it's real and not fake, would learn, en passant, that the person is definitely a citizen/legal resident.
If you want the citizenship feature on the DL but don't want to pay the passport fee, just "qualify" and you'd get your DL-citizen card for no additional charge.
Similar features could be built into almost any official ID.
If the law never brings up citizenship except in connection with a stop where they'd have to ask for that kind of ID anyhow, and if the law tapes all stops so the evidence that the stop was justified (or not, as may be) is right there, then a legal resident/citizen is not likely to face any extra hassle as a result of looking or dressing a lot like many illegal immigrants.
Of course, hiking north through the border areas of the desert at night might get you hassled, but ordinary daily life would proceed seamlessly and hassle free. Those who lacked such ID would mostly be illegals, but when a citizen/legal resident was stopped and the matter had to be looked into further, they could be issued such an ID the moment the matter was resolved, so that it would never happen again.
And indemnified for the inconvenience.

Honestly, Kirk and Brady need to win by a bigger margin than 1297. If that was their margin in the actual vote, then the Dems might well win by fraud. Pat Quinn, like Obama, is clean. But Chicago is quite corrupt, and 'finding' 200 thousand graveyard voters is something that has happened before.

That makes sense, given the overall differences in age (and likely ethnicity) between officers and enlisted men.
There's also a growing strain of evangelicalism in the career military. Remember General Numbnuts proclamation back in 2002 that we would win because "our God is better than theirs." He and his ilk aren't likely Dem voters.

They would spray it to show off the laser lights between detonator and explosives. Then the IEDs became more sophisticated, with $ from who knows where, and they found they needed amour on the vehicles.
But the sophistication didn't really cost much. Just wiring and ordinary electronics and a cell phone. Rather inexpensive.

Fair enough... but I still think they were foolish bordering upon possibly out and out incompetent to not have even more forces waiting in the wings and ready to roll out as needed.
Also the fact that we totally fumbled the entire WMD thing, was just ASKING for it to turn into another Vietnam where lack of motivation turns the home front against the war.

The solution to the hedgerows was in fact field-machined steel welded to the front of the tanks. It was called the Cullen Hedgerow Cutter, after the sergeant who devised it.

It wasn't just Death becoming the Hogfather, I distinctly recall that the UU had a bunch of weird folk creatures that previously had only existed in stories showed up as well.
So clearly a lack of belief in something bi means that for a while less beliefe is needed to catapult a being into existence.

I love Condi. Of course, my loving Condi goes back to when she was a big Soviet Jewry movement suporter back in the day.
Condi story: She was once in, I think Moscow, with some coworkers. This would have been the eighties sometime. They were speaking English, talking something over. A nearby Russian man pointed them out to his son, and said, "Look, those are Americans. At home, in their own country, black and white Americans wouldn't be able to work together and be friends like that."
Condi turned to him and said, in perfect Russian, "Sir, why are you telling your child misinformation like that?"
Floored him.
Not to one up or anything but:
At my son's wedding last year, the Russian wait staff was saying unkind things about some of the wedding guests. My 8-year-old granddaughter, who was raised in Moscow, said to them "I know what you're saying and if you don't bring me ice cream with extra chocolate sauce I'll tell those people what you said about them."
She got her ice cream sundae.

While we indulge in our fine political snits in the USA, blowing democratic and republican snot alternately out of each national nostril by plugging up the other and heaving the diaphragm;
the Iranians are every day one day closer to building the bomb, which they will use first chance they get.
Good Night.
Will they? Iran as a culture has endured conquest by Alexander, conquest by the armies of Muhammad, conquest by the Mongols, conquest by the Turks, and conquest of sorts by the British. They're still there. This is a people who somehow or other find a way to survive.
In this day and age, one key to survival is to not start a nuclear war with one or two warheads when the other side has hundreds. Iran is not like Iraq, subject to the rule of one bellicose madman. While a nuclear Iran will be a turn for the worse in the world, and it is much to be hoped that by fair means or foul they can be stopped, if they do somehow get themselves an arsenal, they will probably come to the realization that the things can't be used except in self defense, and even then they're high-risk toys.

The problem was that we didn't think we'd be facing a protracted war. The Bush Administration thought it would be a Short, Victorious War. That did not happen.
Only a fool believes in "short victorious wars." There's always something--collateral damage or blowback or unintended consequences--to prevent a war from being either short or victorious. Even the relative success of our first Iraq War involved plenty of blowback and unforeseen consequences.
Funny thing about war: it stubbornly refuses to conform to the plans drawn up on maps by politicians and military strategists.

I give you reconstructed German longsword techniques of the 15th and 16th century.
There are many who have a notion, due mostly to Hollywood, that only the Asians developed a high degree of martial arts. The reality is that of course there were great Western masters of Fence and they left many books on how to go about it.
Those who practice things like Kendo and Jujitsu will at once notice a certain familiarity of the moves and of course, major differences in philosophy and the physics required by the type of blades used.

It's not so bad. The short of it is that many blame Bush and Rice for the PA elections that led to Hamas coming into power. My take on it is that it was really a zero sum gain since the PA was and still remains under the control of extremists. We gave them the chance to make the right choice and failed. They constantly make the wrong decisions regardless of what we and Israel do. Bibi offers concessions to the PA even last week. Right before the peace talks those bastards in Gaza went ahead in murdered that Israeli family. It's almost like they want to fail.

That Vanity Fair article? I thought I saw it in Slate? Someone here put it up, but it brought all the pieces together.
Hamas basically were the guys who were against Arafat. After Arafat's death, Hamas pretty much seized on Abbas, being a much weaker fellow - less charismatic. And then the division happened and the fighting between them. 2006 it was? I'd have to go back to see the details. Hamas ended up taking Gaza.

Hi Kids! Long time no type too! Hows it shaking? Not going to stay long, I'm tired, just got home from a long day with my parents. I took Mommy Dearest to the pacemaker cardiologist guy who did the surgery for a follow up today and according the the little micro chip in her pacemaker she's been having short bursts of Ventricular Tachycardia which means she has a small blockage and they have to do some tests to find out where. Man I'll tell you the hoops they make you jump through to get in to see a doctor if you have HMO Health Insurance! Jeeze! All in all, she'll be okay. the doctor seemed real confident that all will be well after the next visit to her regular cardiologist. Seems she's getting a pacemaker monitor to hook up to her phone next the the nightstand so that every time she walks to within ten feet of it , it will automatically send a report via internet phone connection to the pacemaker monitoring center. Huh, who knew they even did things like that?
So hows life with all you Lizards out there? ;-)

I'll give you that and raise you one. When Deep Impact came out, (1998), it featured a black President of The United States. So being the smart ass i can be I said "Oh great the one thing less likely than an asteroid hit-A black President". Whoa. Gut check. Had that all wrong.
I had the same experience with '24'. The only thing less likely than Kiefer Sutherland saving America singlehandedly in every episode was the election of a black president. Or so I thought.

The PA, though, was not in control of Hamas, which was the problem. If so, they would have killed their leaders. Hamas had their elections and Bush proudly pointed at their democracy. But as we all know, democratic vote without a free society is rather futile. In the meanwhile, Bush was funding Fatah. Makes ya kinda go hmmmm....

From what I understand the hedgerows lead to a great big stalemate on both sides, which in turn gave us a chance to let loose with some MAJOR tactical air power...
I had the chance to visit the place not too long ago. Every little lane is a "sunken lane" in the spirit of some civil war battlefield (I can't place which one). Fields of fire stretch only a short distance, and tanks can hardly fit down the road, much less deploy to advantage.
The fighting came down to small unit tactics and heavy-handed artillery barrages. Little by little, we won, if only because we had enough ammo we could just annihilate any particular little plot if we wanted it badly enough.
The Germans put up a hell of a fight. Their "panzerfaust" (an early model RPG, basically) was deadly against tanks at close quarters. Their small unit leadership was better than ours; their small arms better, their training, better. (Our airborne and Ranger forces being the exception to that.)
It was not enough. We had more of everything, and better artillery command and control and observation systems. Command of the skies was not used to best advantage, because we were just beginning to implement some of the revolutionary ideas of Air Force general Pete Quesada [air power on tap, with a forward air controller riding with the command tank in every U.S. armored formation], but it still helped some.

As far as western cinema sword fights, it is lots and lots of fun. Of course, I am actually left handed...
But seriously, real sword fights are over in seconds, not minutes. Someone makes an error or gets a shot in, and that is that.
Also, if it does go for a while, it is exhausting on an unbelievably draining level because of the very intense concentration and footwork involved. It really is a total body workout.
All in all, despite its over theatrics, this is probably the best rapier dueling in western movies.

Sounds fairly reasonable, think it can over come the ZOOMYGODTHEFEDSAREPUTTINGCOMPUTERCHIPSINOURWALLETS TOKEEPTRACKOFUSANDSENDUSALLOFFTOFEMAEDUCATIONCAMPS crowd?
Also what are your thoughts on the possible futility of building a fence?
The security features could be designed so they could not be read remotely, not even from two inches away. There are technical fixes to technical qualms.
A fence would help if patrolled and used along with other measures. There has to be a will to enforce border laws. Absent a will, every measure will fail. With it, when the coastal entry springs a leak, or visa overstays become the problem, that, too, can be addressed in turn.
Even a Berlin-wall style fence, without increased enforcement across the board, would be pointless. What is required is a full-court press, coupled with an amnesty that provides a "path to citizenship" to those who have been here for quite a while and who are already doing their part by learning English, obeying our other laws, and, if they arived as children, getting an education or, if as adults, working for a living.

These people are very odd.
Iran’s Leader Cements Ties on State Visit to Lebanon
It is the Iranian president’s first state visit here since he was first elected in 2005, and it comes at a time of rising tension between Hezbollah and its political rivals. The Shiite group has been waging a campaign against the international tribunal investigating the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, which is expected to indict several of the Shiite group’s members.
Hezbollah’s leaders have warned of disastrous consequences if that happens. They see the tribunal as an Israeli plot aimed at discrediting them and have pressured other factions to publicly disavow it. Even without indictments, some fear the tensions could lead to violence or the collapse of Lebanon’s tenuous unity government, in which Hezbollah and its allies wield veto power.
American officials voiced their disapproval last week of Mr. Ahmadinejad’s visit, which seems timed to embolden Hezbollah and underscore Tehran’s broader influence in Lebanon.

Yeah, but again what would blowing the whistle do? In Europe, it would be interpreted as favoring Israel. And the peacekeepers who tried to do something would be under constant attack. Given some of the mob attacks by civilians Hezbollah has been able to mount, such a force would find itself in a place where they'd have to either surrender or shoot their way out. And if they did the latter, the Western press would report it as a "massacre" and a "war crime", and the unit's officers would find themselves up on charges.

Anyone up to talk sword pr0n?
For today's installment:
I give you reconstructed German longsword techniques of the 15th and 16th century.
There are many who have a notion, due mostly to Hollywood, that only the Asians developed a high degree of martial arts. The reality is that of course there were great Western masters of Fence and they left many books on how to go about it.
[Video]Those who practice things like Kendo and Jujitsu will at once notice a certain familiarity of the moves and of course, major differences in philosophy and the physics required by the type of blades used.
The Romans were brought up short by the Scots use of the Claymore.
Some Roman general wrote that they were convinced that the Highlanders couldn't possibly use those huge and unwieldy blades to any advantage, but that they had been completely wrong and sorely defeated.
Reported in Gibbon, Decline and Fall, I think.

Why are so many people downdinging this post?
I'd do a total solar system for my house, but it would cost 50 grand. If I could do it for 5 or 10 grand, we'd go ahead.
If I could buy a vehicle that could run on natural gas, I'd get one. Only Honda makes a CNG car. I currently live in OK, right in the middle of the natural gas belt. Just think how much more efficient it would be to have people driving vehicles powered by local resources than by oil that's brought over by supertanker, refined in LA, south TX, or CA, and then trucked in.
Lomborg's pretty much on point here, IMHO.
I'd also support a cap on the amount of energy allowed to single family residences, and the same cap should apply to every residence--little house in the barrio gets the same amount of maximum energy as Leo DiCaprio's 25,000 square foot mansion. It would certainly incentivize wealthy entertainment folks to buy green technology. The more they bought, the more money would be available to bring down costs through R & D, so the stuff would become more affordable.

re: #797 Capitalist Tool
The Romans were brought up short by the Scots use of the Claymore.
Some Roman general wrote that they were convinced that the Highlanders couldn't possibly use those huge and unwieldy blades to any advantage, but that they had been completely wrong and sorely defeated.Reported in Gibbon, Decline and Fall, I think.
The Scots actually won a battle in 1746, against the British, in which those things played a part. Falkirk
Not that it did them any good. England had far deeper pockets, both in money and in men, and at Culloden, the matter was settled in England's favor.
