Election 2010, Thread One

Politics • Views: 28,113

Here’s our first thread for live election updates as early results begin to filter in. The chattering classes are chattering away on all the cable news channels, and here’s your chance to put in your $0.02 at LGF.

Registration is open, by the way, so feel free to join up and join in. (But like the sign says, “Trolls Not Welcome Here.”)

No matter what happens, this will go down as the Election of the Disappearing GOP Candidates. Fear of confrontation with the press was a major theme of GOP campaigns across the country.

Remember, keep it clean.

And here we go...

3 jamesfirecat  Tue, Nov 2, 2010 3:41:22pm

Well here we go...

My (obviously partisan) prediction is that unless the GOP gets it head on straight any wins today are probably only to set them up for a greater fall come 2012...

From Combat to Capitol Hill: 27 Vets Running for Office

Today, 27 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan will seek national office. This is nearly four times the number of veterans of those wars currently serving in Congress. Twenty-five are campaigning for House seats and two are running for the Senate. Eighteen are running as Republicans, nine as Democrats. They are as ideologically diverse as the electorate they hope to represent and share only one agenda item: their desire to continue their service.

A 50-50 tie in the Senate would make me so happy.

A 50-50 tie in the Senate would make me so happy.

Yeah except that remember a 50-50 ties goes to the Democrats because they have a vice president.

Oh wait, I'm sorry the filibuster just called, a 50 50 tie goes to whichever side wants to get nothing done...

9 dragonfire1981  Tue, Nov 2, 2010 3:45:53pm

Someone asked me the other day "who is the leader of the GOP?" I couldn't really come up with an answer. Sure there are House and Senate leaders, but I can't think of one person who is the public face of the Republican Party. Sarah Palin possibly, but she's more of a divisive figure than a uniting one.

What the GOP needs most right is unity and an integrated approach. I don't think that will happen anytime soon because of several forces affecting the GOP. The Tea Party, Newt Gingrich, Glenn Beck, Andrew Breitbart and Pamela Geller all wield considerable influence in American right wing politics. At the same time thought they've also alienated a good many people who formerly considered themselves conservative.

I think the GOP best realize if they don't get their act together following tonight, the electorate WILL make them pay come 2012. Don't kid yourselves folks, a GOP win tonight doesn't mean every thing will be rosy tomorrow and there will suddenly be an avalanche of jobs.

If there was a 50-50 split... I don't really think the Democrats would use the filibuster... wait... I'm sorry... I was being sarcastic.

re: #17 Charles

probably not a bad idea

21 dragonfire1981  Tue, Nov 2, 2010 3:48:38pm

I am also curious to see how much of the "Republican support" in this election is actually "Democratic hatred". That is to say, how many people are voting R simply because they don't want to vote D? That happens in a lot of elections. It's not about voting someone IN based on their platform, it's about kicking someone to the curb for a perceived failure.

And personally I think it's one of the most unfortunately common things in elections these days. It's a knee jerk reaction that accomplishes nothing.

Mid-term elections are fascinating to me. I am from Canada where we don't have mid-terms, just one vote every four years. Some might think this system restrictive, but at least it gives the ruling party more than two years to make a case for re-election.

Haven't we learned yet that exit polls might not be all that accurate?

41 ozbloke  Tue, Nov 2, 2010 3:54:52pm

I don't know much about the American electorate, however I get the impression that the votes are not against democratic policy or Obama, as I don't believe many people could tell you what they.he has achieved, or what their specific grievance is.

I think the issue for people is that the economy has not been fixed in two years, and they feel that pain.

I feel sorry for Obama actually, I believe he has achieved a lot despite his parties lack of being unified.

If that's true, that will go down as the biggest Tea Party fail possible. Yeah, Christine O'Donnell is likely to get crushed, but this is Harry Frickin Reid we're talking about. Even a healthy percentage of Dems dislike the guy. And they blow it by running Crazy McLoonypants against him

My ballot was a total snoozer. No truly stand-out wingnuts, a ton of Republican district judges running unopposed, and surprisingly more Green Party candidates than I had heard of (which is to say, there were more than zero Greens). I didn't even get to vote against any SBOE members, because the one from my district isn't up for re-election yet, and besides, she's one of the less insane members anyway.

However, I did vote against Rick Perry super hard. Fat lot of good that'll do, though. Oh well.

If you sincerely believe that doing anything is always better than doing nothing at all, then I won't be supporting your bid for public office.

I voted against a few things today (a clear preference for doing nothing at all) because I believed that the issues were motivated by greed and arrogance.

I am not alone.

Since races are being called so early, I predict that Obama will go back to his native Kenya. Biden will forget that even though he is the VP now, he doesn't get promoted to "P" automatically.

Therefore, it will be Sean Penn versus Glen Beck in a steel cage death match for all the marbles for 2012. The winner will be....

re: #98 theheat

Any vote for Rand Paul was. But thanks for playing, Walter.

(a repost from earlier... just for cuddly little you)...

Wow... you're resident troll just got back from voting... took me two hours... what an adventure... first off... went on over to Jefferson County Elementary School... there were two white New Black Panthers there... outside the polling place entrance... disguised as school crossing guards... brandishing hand held stop signs... I avoided their intimidating shouts ("park on the left... park on the left...")... and went into the polling place.

So... the polling place judges look up my name... AND I'M NOT ON THE VOTER ROLLS... more chicanery... (I've lived in Jefferson Country for 6 years, when I moved from downhill to up here... I forgot to tell the dudes who keep the voters registration that I moved)... so.. they tell me I have to go to Evergreen... to the county annex and get some certified piece of paper and bring it back.

I'm surprised they didn't tell me to drive all the way to Boulder.

So... I drive 14 miles each way to get this piece of paper... when I got to the county annex, there were dozen and dozens of blue uniformed para-military members of the sheriffs department crawling all over the place. And there were signs all over the place... "Park here for the Library... park on the LEFT for polling place" So I wouldn't garner any suspicion, I parked on the left, went inside, got my certificate and quickly got out of Evergreen.

Back at the polling place in Conifer (I had to park on the LEFT again)... I come across the a union thug... working at the polling place as an ELECTION JUDGE. I recognized her... she is a bagger at our local Safeway store. Don't tell me the unions don't have something to do with influencing the vote... I SAW IT WITH MY OWN EYES.

I finally got to vote... thank goodness... but a word of warning to all of you who haven't voted yet... be careful... if you are looking for outrage... you'll find it.

Even if the Republicans don't gain as many seats as some were predicting (maybe his ACORN and union buddies have found enough dead people and non-citizens to keep some of the marginal contests in the 'D' column !), it's still a huge rejection of his loony-left, big government agenda. I know someone quite well who has severe short term memory loss from chronic heavy marijuana use. You are barking up the wrong tree, because this person is functionally disabled. From smoking pot.

Full legalization is probably about as intelligent as full legalization of nicotine products and those containing ethanol. But since we live in a drugged up society, where a majority of adults are using more than one prescription drug (on top of whatever non-prescription ones), I don't hold out much hope.

The GOP has a leader, his name is Rush Limbaugh.

Next question?

Wrong answer. There is no leader. There is no plan. There is only exasperation with what has happened these past two years, and a determination to somehow slow the pace of more of the same. Or roll it back.

The Republicans, as I have opined before, will be taken aback at how little authority they'll have in the wake of this day. They'll be able to stop any more legislation along the lines of Obamacare. But that's about it. They won't be able to write tax law, or rescind Obamacare, or set budget priorities, or hold their breath until the Democrats give them their way.

Both sides will have to compromise, for the good of the nation. Tomorrow it will be time for some grownups on both sides of the aisle to say so, and get to work.

Why would you expect that? It would be entirely out of character. This somewhat off key partying on the public dime, in the face of real problems and a drubbing for his party, is that meltdown, such as it is. It's a retreat, temporary and limited, from a painful reality.

The pomp and ceremony of the visit will ease the pain of the electoral returns, and he'll sort out his thoughts and feelings and chart a new course. The man is neither a fool nor a coward. He knows what he wants and he'll try to bring off as much of it as he can given the new circumstances.

We can add up though, and a government that borrows close to half its annual budget every year isn't going to work for very long.

I'm not so pathetically inclined.

People who abuse drugs to their detriment usually have an underlying factor. Like someone with mental problems might have depression issues and self medicates with pot, etc.

It would seem to be out of character, but it's hard to know what his real character is - he's been pretty successful at hiding what he really thinks. My point is that he doesn't do well under pressure, or even speak very well without a script. He's been heckled a few times during this campaign, and doesn't deal with it very well, to say the least.

A new study in The Lancet rates the harmfulness of 20 psychoactive drugs according to 16 criteria and finds that alcohol comes out on top. Although that conclusion is generating headlines, it is not at all surprising, since alcohol is, by several important measures (including acute toxicity, impairment of driving ability, and the long-term health effects of heavy use), the most dangerous widely used intoxicant, and its abuse is also associated with violence, family breakdown, and social estrangement. A group of British drug experts gathered by the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs (ISCD) rated alcohol higher than most or all of the other drugs for health damage, mortality, impairment of mental functioning, accidental injury, economic cost, loss of relationships, and negative impact on community. Over all, alcohol rated 72 points on a 100-point scale, compared to 55 for heroin, 54 for crack cocaine, and 33 for methamphetamine. Cannabis got a middling score of 20, while MDMA (Ecstasy), LSD, and psilocybin mushrooms were at the low end, with ratings of 9, 7, and 6, respectively.

That's BS. I smoked heavily for the longest time and I don't..............wait, what?

Hell, if we're banning marijuana, let's all get on board the movement to ban unhealthy foods, because those impact a hell of a lot more people than those who will waste their brains smoking way too much pot.

The 2008 deficit was 962 billion, 2009 was 1,785 billion.

You can pin some of the blame for 2009 on Bush, but the stimulus was Obama's, and the slow rate of recovery is all his fault. All a socialist like him has to do to depress investment and economic activity is exist.

So you have a problem with the government trying to stimulate the economy when its in a depression?

Dems are totally in the wilderness in states like KY. The demographics just favor the gop too much: very small minority population, not very urban, culturally still part of the south (though not deep south), and some leftover dead end neoconfederates.

Paul's opposition to the 1964 CRA would have been a fatal blow in many states. KY is not one of those states.

Except it has not always been that way.
My husband is from KY and weeps for what used to be with Wendell Ford and Natcher.
The area my husband is from (Meade County) was a very Democratic area..."Hell there are even Republicans on the Fiscal Court" he just said with disgust in his voice and it is rural.
As it is Paul is not a pick up in the Senate since the seat was already Republican.

Unfortunately, for Republicans, this election was all about electing people who will refuse to even talk to people on the other side of the aisle.

That's the really big question going forward. McConnell and Boner probably are willing to compromise with the WH on a few things so as not to get tagged as a do-nothing Congress. And also because a large majority of Americans want the two sides to compromise.

But the TP rallying cry has been "no compromise" with Obama or the rest of the Dems. So we'll see if the TP has the guts to buck their new leadership, or if they just follow along like robots.

We cannot and must not allow people to make decisions for themselves. While the vast, vast majority will be able to use in moderation or for medicinal purposes, we must for the good of the small percentage ban all use.

So, instead of marijuana, we will prescribe hugely addictive narcotics for pain (I do know about this as my grandfather died of cancer. With pot he would have been coherent and in little pain. With the morphine, not so much. this is what HOSPICE said).

So, again, to make sure we control a few, we must control all.

Freedom shmeedom - unless it is something like beer etc that is more mainstream and brings in lots of dollars.

While we are on the subject of time zones, may I point out that National Treasure (aside from the fact that it was impossible from the word go), had that silliness about the shadow at exactly a certain time and DST, etc. etc.

Standardized times weren't introduced until the railroads. Until then, each town used it's own calculations. The time zones were introduced because the railroads, making transport so much faster, required time to be synchronized from time to time.

So 2: whatever in 1776 probably wouldn't be the exact same time now.

I'm in! I'm in! This is so exciting. The page is colorful with a registration. Anyway, hi everyone, I've been reading since fall of 2009 and am thrilled to be registered. Looks to be an exciting night and brings back memories of election night 1994 when my mother cried and stole an Oliver North sign that someone had attached a traitor banner too. Good times.

Welcome newbie. Keep your head down and never take a Luger from a dead kraut NCO.

Agreed there is no good reason why pot should continue to be illegal.

Heavy, chronic use of either, however, have serious effects. Pot smoke has the same negatives as cigarette smoke. Heart damage or lung cancer - maybe one is worse, I don't know. Both are bad.

Absolutely. But moderate use of either shouldn't cause any issues with anyone. And not everyone abuses alcohol. Lots of people are social drinkers.

Pot is less dangerous than cigs. It doesn't have any chemicals. Well, since you buy pot by unknown sources (if you don't grow your own) you also don't know what's on it. Legalization would make a safer product.

Things have changed quite a bit in that respect. Think of KY as the anti-California. It's not diverse, it's not big, it's socially conservative and it's quite evangelical. In the same way that Republicans (with the exception of movie stars) have a hard time winning in Cali, Dems will have trouble in KY.

Well the good news is that the GOP will not get control of the senate and they will not get control of the White house next election either unless some real scandal rocks this administration. This is because the tea-bags once in the house are going to have to do something other than attack climate scientists to actually hold onto their much more minimal than would have been otherwise, had adult Republicans run. No teabag legislation is going to get through the senate of past a veto.

The bad news is that a whole batch of crazy has just gotten controls of the house and there will be even worse gridlock coupled with endless faux outrages and "investigations" designed more to damage opponents than to actually govern. The worse news is that nothing will get done at all for the next two years about AGW. These are two years that we do not have as a planet to waste.

Idiots who do not understand or appreciate the danger will crow about this. They will even celebrate and think it is some sort of victory - though it is rather like someone celebrating that they have a treatable cancer that won't receive any attention for at least another two years. This is one of the cases where the I told you so is so bad that I, and pretty much every scientist would much rather have been wrong. We aren't.

We will also hear lots and lots of "pious" rumblings about abortion and gay people to be used as wedge issues when ridiculous bills die in the senate.

Worse yet though, is the reflection that this election is on America. The supposed good guys, the Dems, yet again never started fighting or getting organized months ago, when they were in a street fight since the last election. To say they were spineless and anemic would be an understatement. To say they simply could not bring themselves to stand in any unified way against a very well organized propaganda campaign, and that they were too arrogant and stupid to try to fight it, is more close.

But what of the Teabags? We are actually going to see a man who has problems with civil rights get into the senate. What that says about America in 2010, alone is terrifying. When we see that any of these people are taken seriously at all by any large segment of the population, is defacto proof that America has the most ignorant and backwards populace of any nation in the West.

re: #327 brownbagj

Almost anything used to excess is bad for us puny humans. Pot, nor food are not different in this regard.

I agree that if beer is legal, there is no rational argument for maryj to not be.

I would rather spend the money saved from law enforcement, prisons etc in the drug war for the much less expensive cost of rehabilitation for the small fraction that have dependency problems.

Well . . . if we're going to pay for rehab for marijuana dependency, we should pay for alcohol too. Since we're equating the two, as far as damage done.

And yes, of course you're right, anything to excess is bad - food, vitamins, water even. And except for certain jurisdictions dictating what sort of oil restaurants can use in food prep, there isn't much in the way of regulating those things.

Local news was saying that usually Republican candidates are far, far out in the race - like 20-30 points at least by the last couple weeks. So that was actually a good thing for Sink. Rubio took a big lead over the last few weeks.

Look at the unemployment figures between 1929 and WW2. There's a pretty convincing case to be made that FDR prolonged and worsened the depression. Read Thomas Sowell's column today. (And plenty of other "reviisonist talking points", as you'll no doubt refer to them)

So FDR should have continued Hoover's passive policies even though unemployment had shot up to 25% between 1929 and 1932?

If FDR had campaigned on that, Hoover might have kept his job. Why vote for FDR if he's gonna do the same thing as Hoover?

You're scraping the barrel a bit there if you're trying to make the case that "government spending creates jobs". America got out of debt quickly after WW2 because just about every other major industrial nation had been flattened and there was huge demand for rebuilding.

What do you care if someone wants to chill out with some marijuana, to take a break after a hard day at work, rather than with a cold beer?

Actually you are being pathetic with your veiled insult. Take some time out and deal with your own demons.

Look, whoever you are. I don't have any demons, at least not any that you are apparently alluding to. I've lived a good life and I'm in my sixties and in great health: no chronic pains or medical conditions, almost never sick from anything, no arthritis, headaches, etc. What people do with their own lives is what they do.

But when people bandwagon pot as some miracle cure-all, it's really going a bit far. And I'm well aware that there are kinds of pain that it can reduce, and I'm certainly not against that. It's not my doing that tobacco and alcohol or legal or illegal, I've used all three and have no addictions to any, but that doesn't mean that millions of people do themselves significant and occasionally lethal harm from each. And yes, the vast majority of the harm comes from tobacco and alcohol.

So if a drug causes sudden heart attack deaths in only one of 100 thousand users, should we just consider that the cost of business, if the benefits of the drug are relatively benign, and not for end-of-life reasons?

re: #384 really grumpy big dog Johnson

You have some fair points to make.
But from my personal life experiences with family members... alcohol was devastating. My Mother's side of the family was just awful for the most part, and it took such a toll that Mom went full-blown Evangelical which brought about many additional issues for myself and siblings.

Bottom line, let's have adult discussions about usage and revisit laws that I think are not correct or fair.

A very low probability of death due to a substance isn't a good reason to ban its use, in my opinion. It would warrant, IMO, the publication of fair warning that such a consequence is possible with use. After all, a few older men died after taking viagra, but that didn't stop its production nor retail sale.

That said, this last post of yours is thoughtful and well-stated. Previous posts were less so. Often when a post comes across as aggressive or ignorant, the immediate reaction is to respond in kind. Telling you to deal with your own demons *was* presumptuous of me, admittedly.

This is what I mean by it should be illegal to do polling data. And it should also be illegal to call races on the east coast when the west coast isn't finished voting. It's terribly influential.

Meek is my Congressman. He's an awesome politician. I know the man personally. Crist became a very unpopular governor with a 30% approval rating. If he hadn't ran, Meek most certainly could have won.

I know this makes me unpopular here, but I'll say it again. This is where Hillary would have been superior to Obama. She wouldn't have wasted time on impossible dreams of bipartisanship, or sat back as she was getting mercilessly drilled. Nor would she have let the rest of her party make the same mistake of waiting til the last minute to fight back.

What's popular, or unpopular, is what elections are all about. Somehow they figured the real problem with the bush deficit was that it just wasn't big enough. How they got that idea into their heads and how they managed to keep it after all the signs that this was coming for a year now is the real mystery. Because if they don't why are we discussing a hypothetical?

re: #532 jamesfirecat

Its because if we allow pot to be illegal while keeping beer and tobacco legal while they are just as dangerous then on what grounds can you argue for keeping pot illegal?

And we go go in circles either way with this, such as the often-used suggestion that since tobacco and alcohol are so much worse than marijuana, why aren't they illegal?

Of course, everyone knows that alcohol and cigarettes were legal for hundreds or thousands of years before any prohibitions whatsoever were put on them. Marijuana hasn't been illegal all that long, but it's also been relatively unknown until the last half century in the USA.

I'm not some thumping shouter either way about pot. It's relatively irrelevant to me. Those who want my opinion are accomplishing zip, because I simply don't care much about it either way. But I don't see how the world suddenly becomes a better or wiser place if California makes it legal to buy like cigarettes.

Maybe we can buy bottles of meth like vitamins, too.

I don't know. I'm sure there's a head somewhere that has proof it's in the bible.

I think calling Marijuana a schedule one drug is insane.

Yeah...cause Snowe and Collins are hyper partisan extremists. Sure. Keep believing that. They dropped out because the Dems cut them off. Hate to burst your bubble but the more conservative Dems were why the Senate had such a hard time. Did you forget that already? Or are you just being reflexively partisan/Obama fanboy-ist? Really--Hillary is a hyperpartisan and Obama is not according to you?

No, Snowe and Collins are good little soldiers like you and the rest of your party. They don't ask questions or defy their leadership. They march in unison. Congrats, robot.

That's politics. As far as agreeing with you, I'm not sure what your point is. You apparently have assumed that I have taken some stand that is counter to your own. I'm not convinced that is true.

fail. your argument that Hillary CLinton is more partisan than Obama rests on claiming Obama was non-partisan because he failed to pull COllins and Snowe into his coalition?

Pulled the lever--well, marked with marker--in Wisconsin for the medical marijuana initiative. Didn't even know it was on the ballot.

My argument was that Hillary knew the cold hard facts, and wouldn't have wasted as much time with a party that clearly was not going to cooperate.

But hey, bagger boy, if you need to put words in my mouth to have a discussion so be it.

Personally, I don't care about using marijuana myself. I just don't see why it is illegal when we trust people with alcohol. Seems like a waste of law enforcement resources to go after marijuana use.

No need to put words in your mouth. You pounced on my statement that Hillary was more effective at bipartisanship than Obama was, and you could only cite his inability to get Collins and Snowe on board as a counter example. LOL--unthinking fanboy-ism at its finest.

I sure that every Republican vote that was cast today was from a backwards bible thumping racist...

Exactly. I voted for a Republican for Senate (Portman, a non-TP guy who was a very good Representative a few years back), Democrat for Governor (Strickland), and Green for the House (because the incumbent and his challenger, the former Rep, both suck).

Does that make me a partial racist? Do I thump the Bible only two days a week?

Please, someone tell me what stereotype I fit. I so need to be pigeon-holed.

Manchin is far right of the Democrats... he even said he wouldn't caucus with the Dems.

Really? I already knew he was pro-coal (of course, it's West Virginia). Does that mean he would caucus with the republicans or just be an independent? How would that work with committee assignments?

That is such good news. What an unbelievable creep.

He never really stood a chance. He was more of a nominal candidate against Marcy Kaptur, who is fairly popular in her district.

Bleeping John Boehner. Probable Speaker of the House goes to campaign for that a-hole Iott. Damn, I hope the Ohio Legislature redistricts his a** into another district, where he at least would have to stay home and campaign.

You're mixing apples and oranges and apparently unaware of the difference. BOTH Obama and Hillary worked in bipartisan fashion in the Senate. So what?

The presidency is completely different. I doubt if Hillary would have taken so much shit from the supposedly moderate members of the gop (an admittedly small group) before she said, "Screw them." Obama was always trying to court Snowe, Collins, Barasso, Brown, Voinovich and others, usually to no avail whatsoever. If I were an Obama fanboy, why would I be saying Hillary would be a better prez?

But you're doing an obedient job of parroting your Fox talking points. Way to go, teabaggy!

And douche/tea bagger doesn't respond to substance or know when to stop.

Your Fox talking point is the whole "obama is a dangerous hyperpartisan radical." But all you've got to back that up is gop obstructionism and something Hillary did, just like Obama, when a Senator.

Isn't this your big nite? First victory since 2004, shouldn't you celebrating with your fellow teabaggers?

I know someone quite well who has severe short term memory loss from chronic heavy marijuana use. You are barking up the wrong tree, because this person is functionally disabled. From smoking pot.

Full legalization is probably about as intelligent as full legalization of nicotine products and those containing ethanol. But since we live in a drugged up society, where a majority of adults are using more than one prescription drug (on top of whatever non-prescription ones), I don't hold out much hope.

I don't believe you.
