Rachael & I see this really differently. As in Fox’s bad habits are irrelevant to MSNBC policy. No need to take away legitimate rights (donating to the candidate you like) to ensure the appearance of impartiality. Especially from a talent (ahem) like Keith Olberman who vocalizes his preferences with nearly every syllable! It’s utterly senseless to me and intrusive as all get out.
Is there no union to protect the Democratic rights of on air talent?

It is, however, a long-standing policy of NBC News. Olbermann agreed to abide by the policy when he was hired. He broke the rules and will now be punished.

RWC -
Many government employers have requirements in place that employees refrain from public political participation, including making donations; in that case, it’s done as a way to protect employees from politicians who might want to remove them from their jobs for not supporting the “right” candidates (See: Huey Long and his deduct box).
Anyhow - their policy didn’t prohibit the contributions from being made, but said the person “should” report it prior to making it. A bit squishy if you ask me, as to wording (should vs. must - two very different things).
I really can’t help but wonder if there’s something else going on we don’t know about. Just me.

To me, this is just another example of the rule: “all liberals have to fight with one hand tied behind their back.”
But Rachel’s central point is good: MSNBC is not the “liberal FOX.” No other news channel operates like FOX. That’s because FOX isn’t a news channel. It just plays one on TV.

I made the tu quoque as well here but I don’t think it is helping MSNBC or Olberman or even the integrity of journalism in general. Fox News just not produce journalism and does not want to. They simply want to run the Republican Party. And that’s been clear for a long time now. It’s not a very new point.

As Maddow says, the bigger story than the Olbermann contributions and suspension is the vast difference between the operation of a cable news business and a cable news business designed specifically to publicize and elect candidates from the Republican party.
Calling FOX a “cable news business” is just buying into their hype. They’re no more a news network than pro wrestling is a real sport.
What “FOX News” does is the opposite of news. They do not inform; instead, they confuse. They do not report; instead, they lend legitimacy to certain cherry-picked rumors (e.g. Obamas $200M/day trip to India). They have no journalistic standards whatsoever. No fact-checking, no ombudsman, no written editorial policy. They are not journalists, and are therefore not a news organization.
They are a political propaganda arm, nothing more, nothing less.
As much as I’m annoyed at the Olbermann/Griffin tiff escalating into real consequences for viewers, Rachel (as always the voice of reason) has reminded me that this is proof that MSNBC does have real immobile standards, whether FOX does or not. If anything, this situation just highlights how awful FOX is at pretending to be a “news” network.
I think that most folks on both sides of the divide can admit that Olbermann has often gone too far in thinking that he’s the anti-FOX and let his ego get in the way of journalism. Hopefully this episode will serve as a reminder that FOX is the only purported “news” organization that isn’t actually working as a news organization. And in fact, which is the exact opposite of everything that “news” and “journalism” stand for.
You can’t win playing by their rules.

That said, journalists are in a position of influence. Therefore, I believe their ought to be public disclosure. The fact that NBC required their management to be aware of contributions made by their employees is of marginal importance. If the public is not aware of the possible conflict on interest, NBC’s rule is window dressing.

I would agree with the requirement (mentioned by Rachel) that a journalist should mention that they donated to someone if they interview or talk about them, on-air. It would be the equivalent of disclosure standards in print journalism.
FOX “News” states that they have such a standard, but apparently do nothing whatsoever to enforce it.

re: #52 elbruce
I would agree with the requirement (mentioned by Rachel) that a journalist should mention that they donated to someone if they interview or talk about them, on-air. It would be the equivalent of disclosure standards in print journalism.
FOX “News” states that they have such a standard, but apparently do nothing whatsoever to enforce it.
For all we know, FOX has the exact same rule as MSNBC, the difference being their employees did inform management and thus had nothing to report- and therein lies the problem.
If there is no public disclosure, of what use is the rule? I’m sure journalists at CNN, MSNBC and other networks report their contributions. This became news because Olbermann did not report his donations.
Public disclosure across the board.

Court overturns lying politician’s election win
Britain’s shadow immigration minister Phil Woolas has been ordered to forfeit his seat in Parliament after High Court judges ruled he lied during his election campaign.
The judges heard Mr Woolas ran a “risky” campaign, stirring up racial tensions in campaign leaflets by suggesting his opponent Elwyn Watkins was pandering to Muslim militants.

It’s worth mentioning that since the Citizens United SCOTUS case, donating to a political cause is quite clearly a constitutionally protected right for both persons and corporate entities.
It is not legal for an employment contract to require you to give up your constitutional rights. If it were, then indentured servitude would be currently legal. Which it is not.
Olbermann might have an actionable lawsuit on this unless he gets his show back pronto. And don’t think he isn’t the kind of guy who wouldn’t go for suing MSNBC if it came down to it.

True; the vote is the vote. If you could overturn the will of the misguided people, then you don’t have democracy at all.
As an interesting aside, there has been some discussion regarding impeaching Supreme Court justices if it can be demonstrated that they lied during their confirmation hearings. Not that that’s actually going to happen, and not that it’s directly relevant, but…
111 | Eclectic Infidel Fri, Nov 5, 2010 8:22:32pm |
The crowd had demonstrated peacefully at City Hall until about 6:25 p.m., when it began walking southeast on 14th Street. Several in the crowd said they were headed to the Fruitvale BART station, which is about three miles from City Hall. The station is where Mehserle fatally shot Oscar Grant, an unarmed train rider, early Jan. 1, 2009.
About 100 police officers formed a line to stop the march near Laney College at about 6:45 p.m. One protester threw a soda can at the riot-gear-clad police, and within 15 minutes, the crowd had broken through the construction fence at a nearby park and made its way past Lake Merritt.
From there, demonstrators marched along International Boulevard, and then wandered the streets until police trapped them on Sixth Avenue between East 17th and East 18th streets. As they milled about, they smashed about a dozen car windows and jumped on top of taxi cabs.
The situation turned dangerous when a protester ripped the holster and gun from a police officer’s belt, Police Chief Anthony Batts said at a news conference. The protester was swarmed by other officers and arrested.
One police officer was hit by a car - possibly a patrol car - and just past 7 p.m., Batts decided to put an end to the demonstration.
He ordered the march declared an unlawful assembly, based on the incident with the officer’s gun, and at 7:40 p.m. police began arresting people.
By then, the 300 to 500 demonstrators who had been gathered at City Hall had dwindled to about 100 people, corralled on the street in a modest residential neighborhood of apartments and houses. While the police began the arrests, some protesters fled through back yards, others banged on cars, and some lit a trash can fire.
One man confronted protesters after finding a big dent in his car, saying, “That’s justice? It’s anger.”
One protester yelled back, “I’m marching, man!”
BART closed the Fruitvale Station as the marchers headed that way, letting trains through but not letting them stop.

Featuring battles against the Vodka swilling “Hater Princess”, lame songs from the Butthurtmonkey, vile threats at every turn, and a chance to banish Dorkus back to the Fever Swamp for all time, Prince of Blogstalking is sure to entertain. Different kinds of labs.
A bunch of years ago, a huge black lab - a stray - somehow decided he was going to move into my house. Quite literally, I came home from work one day to find this amazingly filthy and mud-caked beast sitting in front of my door. He just sat there like he owned the place. Long story shorter, he kept hanging around like he really thought he belonged there, and after 2 or 3 days of this, the ex and I decided we might as well bring him into the fold.
It turned out to be a good decision. He had his flaws, but he was a remarkably easy dog to train and deal with, especially considering that we acquired him as an adult stray. My brother-in-law at the time had a truly unmanageable jackass 4 year-old kid, and the kid’s parents being the idiots they were, he was allowed to torment my dogs without supervision at all times. I can’t count the number of times that kid performed every action that should have resulted in a mauling: pestering the dog while it’s asleep, screwing around with its food bowl during dinner time, bludgeoning the dog with plastic Fischer-Price toys, etc. Yet this weird black lab endured all of that stoically and without malice. If the kid had done any of that to me, I would probably have backhanded him.

Gus-
A quick search indicates that Hannity- like Maddow- is not a news anchor, but rather a show host.
Therein lies a big part of the problem. The lines between news and entertainment has become more and more blurred. Keith Olbermann is a host, not a news anchor.
On the other hand, all these cable networks do have real journalists and news anchors. Brit Hume is not Hannity and Brian Williams is not Olbermann. Because they are both featured on news networks the lines are further blurred.
That in no way excuses what is a clear FOX tilt, but it does blur the line.
Entertainment can’t be measured in the same way news can.
How to fix it, save for a scroll at the bottom of the screen, I don’t know.

I don’t where these folks get their info. A few of his claims:
1) 35% of tea partiers self-identify as Democrats.
2) Obama wants to “collectivize” everyone’s 401k.
3) Even if AIG, GM and BofA had all collapsed, we would be better off if we hadn’t had TARP, bailouts, stimulus. Unemployment? Credit? Stock market? Consumer confidence? None of these would have been a problem because, again, the rest of the economy would have “absorbed” these losses. Ron Paul!
That part made it even stranger. The guy hated Ron Paul (but was silent about Rand). He called libertarians “anarchists with neckties.” But he seems to agree with the Ron Paul crowd on a lot, even if he wouldn’t admit it.

OT: I just got into a conversation with a tea partier. There are competing protests every Fri. afternoon at the intersection of Ventura Blvd and Laurel Canyon here in LA. I bumped into the guy and we struck up a conversation.
I know many economists have disagreed with both Bush and Obama, but does anyone know of a serious economist who believes this?

The suspension is ridiculous from the perspective of Olbermann being punished for crossing a line journalists shouldn’t cross. His speech promotes his cause far more than his money did.
It only makes sense as punishment for violating an arbitrary policy.
Maddow’s point at the end of the segment was vacuous because this affair was not an example of upholding standards to keep journalism unbiased. MSNBC’s slogan could be: “Still pretending to be news, unlike those bastards at Fox!”
I give them credit for bending the truth and omitting facts less than Fox does. I give them credit for lying much less. I give them credit for treating their audience as if it takes arguments to mold their political opinions, rather than mere shouting as on Fox.

Funny thing, my Mom and Dad voted for Obama. But they still identify with a lot of this cultural shit that you ably and rightfully mock. Like making English (or Amerikun) the official US language.
Actually my Mom did the voting for herself and my father. He has Alzheimer’s so isn’t really capable of filling out the absentee form. I would guess this is pretty common with older couples. But I’m ashamed to think that my mother was involved in ACORN/Black Panther type voter fraud.

Heart attack doesn’t stop guy from voting.
“People in the Election Commission weren’t sure what to do,” Kopplin said in a phone interview Tuesday evening from his St. Joseph’s Hospital bed. “Evidently this was a first - a guy with a heart attack wants to vote.”

I think he’s got enough crazy in him that he is drawn to Paul. It’s called “crank magnetism”.
Sometimes I can tolerate Maher because he goes after tea party extremism and his libertarianism is mostly anti-theocratic and pro-legalizing vice.
But you’re right, he’s got a lot of goofy cranky crazy ideas.

We are neighbors. We may have the same congressman, Berman-D (here)
Yeah, I felt kinda sorry for Berman’s opponent. First, the guy’s name is Merlin Froyd.
Second, on his website, he actually lists being a member of student council at NoHo High as one of his only 4 or 5 qualifications to be a Congressman. Not even president or an officer in student council, but just a member.
Third, he of course had no chance to win, and I don’t think managed to bolster his stature in the CA GOP.

Yeah, Berman gets 80% of the vote. He’s totally safe, the district is too liberal for him to worry. Froyd was nothing more than token opposition. His day job is selling Fords over at the nearest dealership, not that there’s anything wrong with that but it ain’t much of a springboard into politics, at least not to win in a heavily Dem district.

Yeah, this area’s left of center, but it’s not West Hollywood.
I used to get Berman mixed up with Brad Sherman, but he represents another part of the Valley (farther west). The whole think is further complicated by the fact that Brad Sherman represents (at least part of) Sherman Oaks.

I’ll go…
One thing that has always perplexed me is women with daddy issues, or abusive men issues. This seems to manifest in a variety of ways. Some women deal with this by sleeping around prolifically, or otherwise behaving in a wild manner in order to “hurt daddy”. Some seem to look for dominant males that will control them or belittle them, while others seem to look for men that will take care of them and tend to their every need, bend to their every whim. While others still seem to be hardcore manhaters which somehow cannot live without a man in their lives. And then there’s the kind who turn the pettiest of things into the ugliest, most hateful of fights, seemingly stopping at nothing to create a violent confrontation.
I guess if I could boil it all down into just one question, I would ask: What the fuck is this growth on the back of my neck?

Can’t speak to the back of your neck.
As to the women and behavior you described, there are no short answers.
Behavior is dictated by a series of experiences, not events. How we perceive experiences differ in each of us. That said, there are common behaviors because we all participate in the same culture and society.
A short answer: Women (and men) behave the way they do because of self esteem issues.
Now, before you roll your eyes, I’m not talking about the pop culture self esteem crap.
Real self esteem is very easy to understand and describe:
Knowing what you are and are not capable is real self esteem.
If you know who you are and what your potential and limitations are, you are in possession of self esteem. There are happy and unhappy lawyers and doctors and there are happy and unhappy mail clerks and janitors.
The behavior you describe is about people who are stuck- they do not know who they are and what they are capable of or what their limitations are.
They are lost and more often than not, they hang on to the past and refuse to move forward because they fear the unknown.
That’s teh short version. More if you want it.

Does Fox News coverage = GOP campaign contribution?
January 26, 2010 5:41 am ET by Eric Boehlert
With its open and aggressive cheerleading — not to mention on-air fundraising — for Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown last week, Fox News crossed yet another threshold in its unabashed transformation into a purely political entity. Now completely turning its back on producing any semblance of independent journalism, Fox News eagerly flaunts its role as GOP kingmaker.
That relentlessly partisan approach continues to raise fundamental questions about what role Fox News plays in our political culture and, thanks to its shameless GOP boosterism, whether the cable channel and its programming should fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Election Commission. Meaning, does Fox News’ gung-ho GOP campaign coverage double as a contribution to the Republican Party, a contribution that should be regulated?
The Commission defines “contribution” to include any gift of money or “anything of value” made for the express purpose of influencing a federal election. A key Commission exemption for decades, though, has been granted to the news media, since they have been seen as “neutral” and not controlled by political interests. Therefore their editorial product could not be considered a “contribution” or “expenditure” to any campaign.
The exemption was created, in the words of the Commission, to ensure “the unfettered right of the newspapers, TV networks, and other media to cover and comment on political campaigns,” which makes perfect sense, since there’s nothing wrong with newspapers endorsing candidates or columnists berating incumbents. The exception has allowed journalists (and more recently bloggers) to report and pontificate about campaigns without having to worry about federal finance laws and whether their editorial efforts cross the line into candidate contributions.
That approach worked well because for decades there has been both a spoken and unspoken understanding among professional journalists as to what kind of guidelines and standards ought to be upheld in the pursuit of the news. That was especially true of cable and network news broadcasters, who wield so much influence in our TV-centric culture.
As former Federal Communications Commission chairman Reed Hundt once wrote:
Part of this tradition is that broadcasters do not show propaganda for any candidate, no matter how much a station owner may personally favor one or dislike the other. Broadcasters understand that they have a special and conditional role in public discourse… Virtually all broadcasters understand and honor it.
[…]
If you weren’t already aware, Fox News pretty much did all those things on behalf of Scott Brown.
The FEC made the correct, sensible decision in 2006 when it extended its media exemption to include bloggers, even though many of them broadcast a proud partisan voice online. There’s nothing wrong with a strong editorial voice. What Fox News is doing today, however, goes so far beyond broadcasting an editorial voice, skating so close to GOP campaign management, that it should no longer enjoy the distinction of a media exemption.
Indeed, with its radical transformation into a purely political entity, Fox News has changed the rules governing politics and the press. It’s time for the FEC to recognize that, look at Fox News with a fresh set of eyes, and act accordingly.

Yes, there is something referred to as the ‘Impostor Syndrome’.
‘How can I be a success? I’m not smart- I’m the same kid I was in high school/college’. I don’t belong in this nice neighborhood with these highfalutin’ types…’ etc.
It’s more common than you think.

Doesn’t most everyone say “NO EARMARKS!” at one time or another.
This particular phrase seems to on the list of programed ones that you hear when you pull that string with the plastic loop that’s stuck in their backs.
One of the most effective ways to reduce the size of the budget without actually reducing spending at all, is earmarks. Keep in mind, much of the earmarks go to pay for things that we used to budget directly. much of it is total crap.
Earmarks are like budget items, only with less oversight. Remember, however, if you eliminate earmarks, you have to raise on-the-books spending. Too much of the critical infrastructure is paid for with earmarks to not raise on-the-books spending if we cut earmarks.
People like to complain about earmarks, because it sounds good, but the fact is, they persist as such a prominent part of government expenditure precisely because we have done an incredibly shitty job as a nation of accepting the massive expense of running a country as large and technologically advanced as the US. It costs a shitload of money, people, and the alternative SUCKS.

re: #344 Gus 802
They should look at it, and set more stringent rules that all networks must follow. What Fox has done is crap all over the line that the rest of them have been ‘tongue in cheek’ skirting for years.
Fox is a great business model, for making money, but not so good at getting news to the public.

The problem is if you single out one network you will invariably open up a Pandora’s box.
Are editorials ‘things of value’?
Is there a difference between news and entertainment as it relates to ‘value’?
Is there a difference between print and broadcast?
I think the whole approach is problematic.

First things first- do you have any questions so far?
Sure. I get this part:
They are lost and more often than not, they hang on to the past and refuse to move forward…
I’ve had relationships with women who have had negative experiences that go as far back as their adolescence, and seem to engage in a kind of transference no matter how well they are treated now. One example might be me saying “Would you please treat me and my property with respect. You have no right to use me or my property as if you owned them”, the response being “What are you, my daddy now?”
What I don’t quite get is:
…because they fear the unknown.
Would this be a case of someone seeking the familiar? Someone who is so accustomed to conflict that they can’t live peacefully? Or is it a case of misplaced revenge?

Conflict for some people is comfort, because it gives them an excuse not to get close.
You would think the closer you get, the less conflict there might be but usually, it is just the opposite. When someone knows their partner loves them and they trust their partner, they can engage in negative behavior feeling safe they won’t be abandoned. The conflict and knowing of their partners commitment to them actually empowers them.
These issues can be dealt with, though it can be a difficult process. By no means impossible, but it does require commitment.

Except that at this point, an investigation like that would be exactly what Fox would want. They’d have the ‘Oh my god, the liberal fascists are trying to silence us” storyline they dream of, and the right-wing craziness would get even worse. Even the most massive fines probably wouldn’t hurt them, because their mindless viewers would probably start up massive donation campaigns to pay for them.
All that would come of it would be increased craziness, and increased ratings, and massive backlash against Obama and the Dems. Right now, those pricks are untouchable.

George Bush Thinks Sarah Palin Is ‘Unqualified,’ Lost Election For McCain, Says GOP Source
George W. Bush is not a fan of Sarah Palin and thinks that she spoiled the GOP’s best laid plans in 2008 and could potentially do it again, a friend of the former president recently said.
The New York Daily News reported Friday:
“Naming Palin makes Bush think less of McCain as a man,” a Republican official familiar with Bush’s thinking told the Daily News.
“He thinks McCain ran a lousy campaign with an unqualified running mate and destroyed any chance of winning by picking Palin.”
Bush has addressed Palin as a relative non-factor before, characterizing her as a grossly unpolished candidate not ready for the political spotlight.
From a book released last year, former Bush staffer Matt Latimer wrote:
“‘I’m trying to remember if I’ve met her before. I’m sure I must have.’ [Bush’s] eyes twinkled, then he asked, ‘What is she, the governor of Guam?’”
“This woman is being put into a position she is not even remotely prepared for. She hasn’t spent one day on the national level. Neither has her family. Let’s wait and see how she looks five days out.”

Because she’s pointing out the obvious— that Fox isn’t a news organization at all. It’s a political organization. MSNBC, on the other hand, IS a news organization, so the rules that Fox lives by, where they’re blatantly donating to candidates and going to fundraisers and raising money live on the air for Republicans running for office, wouldn’t fly at MSNBC because their rules are different.

But of course, comparing Rachel Maddow to a 6th grader is carefully reasoned and not ridicule at all.

So go ahead and explain to me what I’m seeing that isn’t there. You made ridiculous right wing claims that Maddow was making excuses for Olbermann — and she simply is not. Not at all. She admits right up front that he violated his contract.
And yet, you still insist that she did make excuses. I shouldn’t be surprised any more by this kind of stuff, I guess. It’s how right wingers argue: ignore reality and just cling to those talking points like a drowning man with a life preserver.

Look— just admit that you didn’t understand the point she was making about how Keith’s suspension shows the difference between a news organization like MSNBC (or CNN, who have similar rules in place) and a blatantly political one like Fox News. It’s okay to admit when you’re wrong, or when you didn’t catch what she was saying. Really.

re: #419 Charles
No, I did NOT claim that she was making excuses. Surely your dealings with children have left you with the ability to differentiate between excusing and distracting. An excuse is - here’s my reason for … Distracting is - look over there at Joey!
As I said in my first post, she said Yeah, but look at Fox News, they’re way worse. In my opinion, that’s an attempt to distract people, to change the subject to the wrong-doings of others. It’s typical behavior for children, maybe Maddow’s parents never caught on.

re: #420 Lidane
Why bring it up at all, except to try to burnish their reputation by distracting viewers with what she believes is the wrong-doing of others. There’s a time and a place for pointing out the misdeeds of Fox News. If you believe that it’s in the middle of your own mini-scandal, then you would have 11-year-olds walk all over you.

And just like your first post, this is a ridiculous, blatant mischaracterization.
Your attempt to drag it down to the level of a 6th grade argument is pathetic. She made a very good point, supported by a mountain of evidence, that Fox News actually does engage in exactly the kind of behavior that is prohibited at MSNBC.
That’s the point you don’t want people to see, and that’s why you’re trying to minimize and mock it.

The difference is that your opinion is based on a fantasy version of a Rachel Maddow show that never existed. She doesn’t distract, she doesn’t make excuses, she doesn’t minimize. Anyone can watch and see for themselves that she began with a very clear summation of what happened, acknowledged that Olbermann had violated his contract and that other MSNBC reporters had followed theirs, and basically said he deserved it. No excuses, no distractions. It was clear as day.
Then she proceeded to illustrate, with numerous examples and hard facts, that Fox News has no such ethical standard.
The “facts” part is what you seem to be desperately trying to ignore.

CNN did report on Fox’s contributions:
“‘Fair and Balanced’ has been rendered utterly meaningless,” Hari Sevugan, the DNC’s national press secretary, said in a statement. “Any pretense that may have existed about the ties between Fox News and the Republican Party has been ripped violently away.“No Republican who appears on Fox can be seen as answering to an independent press and all should appear with a disclaimer for who they truly are – the favored candidate of the corporate-friendly network. No Fox News political coverage can be seen as impartial and all of it should have a disclaimer for what it truly is – partisan propaganda.”
News Corporation spokesman Jack Horner defended the donation.
“News Corporation believes in the power of free markets, and the RGA’s pro-business agenda supports our priorities at this most critical time for our economy,” Horner said in a statement to CNN.

That is not a ‘mitigation’ of MSNBC. It is pointing out that, comparatively, Fox is worse.

Okay, you don’t like your own analogy. That isn’t my problem.
It is much more like a woman who who hosts a news show, who herself has not acted in any improper way, pointing out that, although one of her fellow hosts at her channel has committed an error, that this is actually a rarity at her channel— as shown by her own ethical standards— and that another channel doesn’t even have ethical standards, let alone adheres to them.

Okay, well, your analogy was completely flawed to begin with, then, because you don’t stand in loco parentis to MSNBC and not to Fox. Fox and MSNBC hold the same relationship to you. So you simply made a very poor analogy to defend your very strange desire to castigate Maddow for pointing out that Fox news is far more ethically flawed than MSNBC or Olberman.

MSNBC has a set of ethics standards regarding campaign contributions that they enforce. Fox News Channel does not. That was Maddow’s point.
454 | LRonHoover Sat, Nov 6, 2010 12:13:19pm |
I don’t really buy her argument. Suspending Keith is not proof that MSNBC is really just a straight up news operation, unlike FOXNews. The real proof is the actual news coverage they give. When I watch either of the two networks the coverage is very similar. The primetime on both of the channels is pretty unwatchable for me.
We all know Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chirs Mathews, and Lawrence Odonnell are liberal, and want to see Democrats win elections, and the way they cover the news reflects that desire. Just because they have this rule about donations doesn’t really change that.
What I find myself thinking about is this: if a cable news host runs a story or segment that is designed to help one party and hurt the other, should they disclose that to us? Or is that obvious? Do you think they run segments like that? And essentially isn’t that the same thing as donating money?

You rather missed the point of that. MSNBC, which you are claiming is “news for liberals”, has Joe Scarborough, Republican congressman, for three hours in the morning.
To me, MSNBC is still closer to what Fox is than it is to being a news organization, it all seems like the talk radio format moved to cable news channels. I’m not sure who is more accurate, all I know is they are both really bad to watch.

We don’t need “News for Liberals” or “News for Conservatives” we just need better news.
That’s nice. But one of the very important points is, say, the comparison between Beck and Maddow.
Beck spouts insane conspiracy theories, lies a lot, and race-baits.
Maddow reports accurately and invites people to defend their positions.
That you are attempting to equate them is rather foolish of you.

re: #466 Obdicut
Please read what I’m saying before you misinterpret it and then argue against a misrepresentation. Let me quote myself:
“When I watch either of the two networks the coverage is very similar”
You even quoted this
“I was telling why I see MSNBC as largely political in motivation”
“Everytime I watch any of their prime time news lineup of Ed Shultz, Chris Mathews, Keith Olbermann, or Rachel Maddow the goal of these shows seems to be designed to benefit democrats and harm republicans. I see Fox as same, but you know, the other way around ;)”
I’m not equating them in every way, but I am saying that they are the same in that these shows, which are the shows that the majority of people watch, are politically motivated and designed to achieve political goals.
Do you disagree that the shows of Ed Shultz, Chris Mathews, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Lawerence Odonnell are intended to benefit Democrats and harm Republicans?
So if the most important shows on the network are intended to benefit Democrats and harm Republicans, then they are largely a political operation.
I’m not arguing who is more accurate, I agree that MSNBC is probably more accurate than FOX.

Olbermann might have an actionable lawsuit on this unless he gets his show back pronto. And don’t think he isn’t the kind of guy who wouldn’t go for suing MSNBC if it came down to it.
Noon: Olbermann gets his show back.
Noon plus five seconds: MSNBC cancels Olbermann’s show.
Noon plus ten seconds: MSNBC informs Olbermann that under the terms of his contract, he cannot host a show elsewhere without the express written permission of MSNBC so long as they pay him. (I don’t know if this is the case, but there is usually boilerplate language to this effect in the contract of all broadcasting “talent”)
Noon plus thirty seconds: Olbermann’s head explodes.
As for suing MSNBC, I have to ask one question—Who else would have him? Seriously, could he get a job with Fox “News”? CNN? His old pal Hillary Clinton?

John Dickinson: Are you calling me a coward?
John Adams: Yes… coward!
John Dickinson: Madman!
John Adams: Landlord!
John Dickinson: LAWYER!(Riot breaks out)
One of my favorite parts of 1776. My favorite performance of all was one I wasn’t even in. The guy who had played Col. McKean in the production in which I was “Andrew McNair, Congressional Custodian” was playing the same role again. Last night of the production, the riot breaks out, his job is to fire his musket to break it up. He fired and…click. Recocked, fired…click. He was more than a little upset after the show—“It just had to happen on the last night. No chance for redemption…”

I email or chat with his staff from time to time. He’s actually pretty moderate for a guy with 80%. Responsive.
If you got one response from Berman, it’s the same as the total I got from Boehner in the 14 years I lived in his district. I would write an annual letter to him, mostly but not totally about tax law and procedure, and the a-hole wouldn’t even send a form letter back. The one letter I got was as much solicitation for funds as response.
Prick.

Feh. You’re fuckin’ useless. Guess I’ll go speak to an accountant or something.
/If you’re in a mood to type, I’m in a mood to read. Have at it, if you will.
I’m an accountant. You rang? :)
Since it’s November, I’m in one of my “better” moods. If you have a question, believe me, this is the time to ask. (I’ll answer, even in March, but you get faster and less obscene answers now)

It is perhaps possible you really don’t realize that saying it’s a statement of the obvious is yet another insult.
Let me try to explain this to you:
You speculated, negatively, about my parenting skills.
I told you that was rude.
You responded by saying that was obviously a sore point— meaning that your insulting speculation was accurate, that my parenting skills were poor.
So, that was yet another insult.
Do you understand?

I bet Keith was trying to make a point to his bosses who had given over $1,000,000 to candidates. If he loses his job over it, I don’t think he would care. He’s done this before on his show where he lambasted his bosses over the freedom of speech while on the air. Now with Comcast coming into the picture, I’m sure he felt like he needed to do something knowing full well what the consequences were. Once Comcast takes over MSNBC, they’ll try to get Maddow off the air too. The media has never been liberal as some like to say it is, so with the only two liberals off the air, there isn’t one person who can say the media is liberal! Seriously, I don’t think the average American understand what is happening and has been happening to our media in this country. Even the New York Times is leaning far right most days! Gees.

I understand that no amount of apologizing will be sufficient to ease your pain. It’s useless for me to try again.

NYT leaning far right? Wow. If the NYT is far right, (a) then I’m 7’5”, and (b) I’d like to see what’s medium to far left.
I finally made it through the video, and while Maddow finally acknowledges the simple truth—that MSNBC has a policy, that Olbermann violated it, and that he was suspended based on the policy—she also spends most of her time bashing Fox “News” because some of their hosts donate as much or more and don’t acknowledge it.
Guess what, Ms. Maddow? What Fox “News” does is irrelevant in this case (as it is in most others). MSNBC holds itself to be better than that. Olbermann was not suspended because he did what Fox “News” ranters do regularly; he was suspended because he violated MSNBC policy.
Now I’ll admit that I can’t stand Olbermann, mostly because he’s a ranting, hate-filled blowhard a-hole, as obnoxious and spiteful as Hannity is on Fox “News”. However, that’s not why he was suspended. He violated what apparently is clearly stated company policy, and again, it doesn’t matter that the other guys do it, too.

re: #489 ClaudeMonet
Well, the truth is MSNBC does not go by NBC’s rules and if you read the verbiage for the policy in question, it’s not mandatory. More like a suggestion….
“Anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest. Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns or groups that espouse controversial positions. You should report any such potential conflicts in advance to, and obtain prior approval of, the President of NBC News or his designee.”
His only “crime” was he didn’t get permission first. Apparently, it’s okay for the owners of MSNBC (who do they get permission from?) to make $1,000,000 in campaign donations, but it’s not okay for Keith to make a total of $7200 in donation. I could see it if Keith had made $90,000 in donations or even $1,000,000, but $7200? Silly!
Honestly, I understand having this kind of policy in place. All media outlets should have this kind of clause! Fox News doesn’t and they gladly exploit it. Anyway….
I listen to Glenn Beck and Howie Carr out of Boston and almost every week they’re talking about at least one “great article” in the New York Times that supports their position. I don’t get the NYTs, so my statement above is from what I’m hearing coming out of their mouths only. Even Howie Carr has stated that the NYTs is more enjoyable to read which tells me it’s leaning more to the right than left. Agree?

Here is a good article from David Zurawik, the liberal leaning TV critic at the Baltimore Sun:
Free Keith: Watching MSNBC go off the rails…
I promised myself a break this weekend after going deep into the election and hitting the outrageous behavior of MSNBC on election night as hard as I could the last few days.
I still deeply feel the actions of its analysts — Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Lawrence O’Donnell and the Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson — were so egregious in the rude and hectoring handling of conservative politicians invited on for interviews that the entire realm of TV journalism was diminished in the public mind.

re: #490 KayInMaine
I agree, it’s silly that they suspended him. He didn’t jeopardize his standing as an impartial journalist because, with me at least, he never had any standing as an impartial journalist. If someone like say Chuck Todd was doing this it would damage his standing with me.

re: #492 LRonHoover
LOL Well, that’s a matter of opinion about Chuck Todd. :D Anyway, the point is….I think Keith was trying to make a statement towards his higher ups and because of the angry environment in this year’s election, I don’t think he gave a rat’s behind if he got caught or not. He’s gone after Phil Griffin of MSNBC before, so for Keith it was a matter of principle. It will be interesting if the Comcast owner decides to get rid of Maddow too if Keith goes in the end. If he (Comcast) does, then there really will not be a balance in our news shows at all. Sad.
