They call it Boxing Day because mothers in law start fights on the day after Christmas :-)

How disgusting to see Israellycool promoting European fascists Filip DeWinter and Heinz-Christian Strache. I thought he was keeping his head on straight, but apparently the sickness is everywhere on the right.

I'm removing his blog from our RSS feeds -- I will not link to people who promote neo-Nazis and fascists.

Charles, are the posts promoting those figures on the front page? I can't see them, but I'm not particularly familiar with Israellycool.

It's a case study in how mindless fear turns people really, really stupid. Pro-Israel Zionists promoting people who have direct ties to Nazis. What the hell is wrong with these people?

She could call me all that and more and it wouldn't make me any less wrong for choosing not to associate or support those folks. I wont associate with Neo Nazis even if they are temporarily supporting Israel over the Islamists, because their worldview is still odious.

I get that. Sometimes, though, members of minorities display what I would call "Stockholm syndrom for minorities", wherein they defend the majorities or their members or ideologies that actually are hostile to the minorities in question. A prominent example of this was the Weimar Germany League of National-German Jews ("Verband Nationaldeutscher Juden").

I'm starting to feel like Kevin McCarthy in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."

11 Mark Winter  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 11:17:29am

Strache is one of the most disgusting political figures in Europe. He rose to sudden fame in right wing blogs after a speech, in which he railed against Islam and the Turks in Austrian parliament.

He had ties to the Neo Nazi Viking Youth, to the Neo Nazi DVU party and is probably the most xenophobic politician in Austria.

Those right wingers often pretend to be friends of Israel, and unfortunately some get fooled by those token declarations.

In the comments to the article in question on Israellycool, this blew my mind and upset me (as a dual citizen):

I was with this group in Ashkelon and Jerusalem. They are very fine people. They are also anti Nazi. It is very important for Jewish groups to join with them in the fight against all Muslim Brotherhood groups.
Thanks,

Maybe I am just confused, and by 'group' she is not referring to the German Freedom Party and Vlaams Belang?

14 Charles Johnson  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 11:20:52am

But note that the Jewish Defense League is a Kahanist group, so in a way it's not surprising to see them hooking up with fascists.

Has to do with the 'Bunker Mentality'.

As the anti Israel PR campaign flows (and it will eventually ebb) there are those who willingly blind themselves to the reality of their new friends really are. It stems mostly from a misplaced sense of panic/abandonment.

As you pointed out the other day, writers like Glick and Rubin exploit this sentiment and gradually lead the willing down the garden path of their making.

I knew Rubin was flirting with that. I did not know Glick had long since surpassed him until you pointed that out.

In any event, the phenomena is not new. It is not unlike the abused becoming the abuser. The vilification and condemnation so prevalent has been foisted on Israelis for decades. We have been immunized to the ugliness and worse, there are those who do not even realize they are becoming what they hate.

Agreed. After being attacked for years with no end in sight, some people will look for someone, anyone, who is willing to be nice to them and call them friend.

Here's some Sunday Snot Air for you guys. This is a discussion about those dastardly death panels that our pal Palin was promotin' and pushin' against.

1.) That’s why all this talk about Obama’s poll numbers misses the point. He is setting his framework in place for generations of rule by Soviet-style apparatchiks.

He doesn’t care. He’s winning.

PattyJ

2.) How Orwellian. Death by gubmit. Death panels and death ‘counselors’.

This is just the opening gambit of a strategy Obama will use throughout the coming year in order to achieve through regulation what a Democrat-run Congress could not deliver through legislation.

Sharpen the pitchforks.

petefrt

3.) By any means necessary. — Malcom X

itsnotaboutme

4.) I wonder when the military will finally realize they need to protect the Constitution.

darwin

5.) How soon until Obama asks for and receives the dictatorial powers that his buddy Hugo Chávez has? It would only be for a year. What could possibly go wrong?

Tommy_G

6.) It’s Palin in 2012 or we’re finished. That simple. Only she understands. Only she has the balls to take him on. None of the rest do. It’s a congenital failing. They don’t get it, can’t get it, will never get it.

Palin or nothin'??!! PRETTY PLEASE!!!!!! What a bunch of dunce caps!

You are correct. Where Obama was born is not worth discussing, stick a fork in it.

The subject now is why people won't let the fuck go of it and doggedly/mindlessly cling to it. That angle would not be worth discussing if 1% of the population would not let it go, but 25% and even some of elected officials won't let it go. It keeps coming up and is used to detract from the President, which could undermine real progress on real issues.

I'm keeping my mouth shut for now and playing on 'safe' subjects but I have biz acquaintances who are FB friends. I'm wondering if I should have two FB accounts or change it, decision still pending.

I'm wondering if it's worth staying friends with people who are otherwise morons. Will they be that ignorant when an issue regarding our relationship is of any worth?

I really don't care the politics of the other person, if we can agree or disagree but have a reasoned exchange that is what is most valuable. But when dogma and hyperbole is mixed in with ignorance I have a hard time excusing it no matter the political affiliation.

I blew off other ideas as 'that's just their opinion' for years: Beck/Limbaugh 'being entertainers,' Obama's birth certificate, fanboi-sim of AGW deniers, etc. Now I'm wondering if there's a point at which you can't excuse idiocy and need to respond.

Taxation of the wealthy, policy choices, geopolitical war policies, that's opinions. We can agree or not. Ignorance is not an opinion but it sure is a choice.

When people start talking as if actual threats to our freedom, "fema camps", will occur, they are in silly land. For me, I just leave them there and walk away.

That has been my usual tact and probably fine. If it's a rare occurrence and 1% of the population fantacize about it, not a big deal. 25% bringing it up and 'entertainers' that have regular audiences in the millions keeping the meme's alive, that's a problem that left unchecked become a social cancer.

I'm beginning to wonder if the best way to 'do something' is to take all these discussions I previously blew off and engage. Not to win or beat down, but to retort and hold ground. It's about all I can do.

That and the supporting cast are all much finer actors than those in the original.

The reviews all say its much truer to the book. I'll make a note to see it.

I hope Matte doesn't die at the end of the remake..That pissed me off...Damn snakes! I hate snakes..

re: #76 Thanos

Just here a moment, but I will mention that it's certainly not a waste of time to see True Grit, I thought it a vast improvement on the original.

I was just reading about it. The first ad hearing Bridges talk in old grizzled cowboy hooked me. Being a Coen Bros film locked it. I'm going to see it in the theaters.

Chris Harris gets an interception. Barring a miracle, this pick will end the game with a Bears win.

I don't want to wreck it for you but I will mention that everyone speaks in the true vernacular of the time, the Coens are as true there to the actual history as Ridley Scott usually is with period authenticity.

You're not wrecking it for me, you're pumping it up. I haven't been this excited to see a movie for a while. My first western I really liked was "Outlaw Josey Wales."

If you've ever wanted to try to figure out what makes Birthers tick, here's your chance. I've given up. Now I just point and laugh.

I see you missed and hit Philadelphia instead. You might want to keep the stormtroopers away from the Death Star's fire controls. :D

We can try, but it's a "red fish" (that's the troll's nic) so we should probably chargrill it.
