Conservative Writer Warns Glenn Beck Will ‘Blow Apart’

But the bottom line: conservatives love Glenn Beck’s brand of crazy
Wingnuts • Views: 33,265

Commentary’s Peter Wehner says Glenn Beck is The Most Disturbing Personality on Cable Television.

It looks to me like it’s only a matter of time — and I suspect not much time — until he blows apart professionally. If and when that happens, one can only hope that conservatism as a movement will have created enough distance from Beck to mitigate the damage.

Although I agree with Wehner’s point, he’s dreaming if he thinks the conservative movement will denounce Beck. On the contrary, Glenn Beck’s influence on the Tea Party and even on Republican politicians is enormous.

For example, just three days ago, Michele Bachmann (R-Mars) said Beck was the best person to solve America’s economic crisis:

“We need to simply tell people the facts, like Glenn Beck, with that chalkboard, that man can explain anything. I think if we give Glenn Beck the numbers, he can solve this.”

The conservative movement will never distance itself from Glenn Beck.

Beck's an emotional timebomb. He's anywhere from a few days to a few months away from breaking down on camera and being hauled away by the nice gentlemen in white coats.

I can explain anything with a chalkboard as well. My explanation might be utter bullshit, but I will explain it.

Bachmann is partially right, though. He can explain anything. I mean, his explanation will be complete, totally, utterly, and insanely wrong, but, by god, he'll try!

totally agree. I've been thinking he'd go "howard beale" on the air some night.

Glenn Beck is the gasoline the GOP/TP runs on and Fox Noose is the gas station.

There is no way they can distance themselves from Beck. He is part of it.

Oh I don't know. I can easily imagine if Beck has sort of breakdown the right will just forget him and go on as before. There's no shortage of cable TV talk radio rabble rousers to choose from. But a Beck downfall would have to be something like an actual breakdown. I can't imagine his being able to say or do anything that would be considered too over the line for his employers and fans.

I've been watching/listening to Beck the last few months for the absolute hilarity of it. I'm still 50-50 on whether he actually believes the shit he's selling, but I can tell by his tone that he fancies himself as some kind of prophet from on high.

The conservative movement will never distance itself from Glenn Beck.

They will have to eventually throw him under the bus. But his ideas, conspiracy theories and revisionist history will outlast him by a long shot. Beck will implode but the John Birch Society, Ron Paul and Alex Jones have been welcomed back into the conservative movement. Glenn Beck isn't really the problem, he's just a highly visible symptom of a much bigger and pervasive problem.

If dementia were dynamite, Beck's pending blow-up would flatten half of Manhattan. He should be classified as a weapon of mass distraction.

When Beck goes, I just hope they get it on tape. From 6 angles. With stereo surround sound.

14 darthstar  Thu, Feb 24, 2011 10:39:52am

Something I learned this morning: If you take every other word Glenn Beck says and combine them with every other word Muammar (sp?) Qaddafi (sp?) says, you get a speech by Michelle Bachmann.

That would make a great YouTube remix!

Beck's not the only source, just the one with the biggest loudspeaker right now. When he crashes and burns, there will be others to take up the flag. Plenty of loons will to froth at the mouth on TV for a steady paycheck.

20 Gus  Thu, Feb 24, 2011 10:44:12am

When conservatives get serious.
Fox news shouldn't even exist but today's conservatives aren't outraged by the bogus reporting, conspiracy theories and even 9-11 truthers on Fox. As long as conservative tolerate this crap Fox news will keep giving it to them.

They don't tolerate it. They need it.

He's firmly in bed with the conservatives. They love him (or fear to cross him - whatever). They laid down with that dog and will deserve it when he blows apart.

Yeah, this. I think he'd actually have to have a sufficient episode that he wasn't able to return to the air for it to matter.

If he's not a slick con man, which I also hold open some hope for, the man is currently mentally ill, and being given a national forum to express all his conspiracy theories and fears.

This can't be an effective sort of therapy.

I keep up the hope that this is all an act on Beck's part....a skit like Lonesome Rhodes would do for his hick audience?
The perfect conman.

People here have put it simply about Beck. He's not the issue really. It's the people who watch Glenn Beck and take him seriously that are. People who see Glenn Beck comparing Reform Jews to Al Queda and I just fear it won't end well.

28 Phydeaux Speaks  Thu, Feb 24, 2011 11:16:49am

The Right specializes in cognitive dissonance, so when Beck disintegrates they'll just move right along as though he were never a part of anything.

Yeah. I really don't want Temple Beth El to become the new Tides Foundation, if it's OK with Mr. Beck.

We already have enough security problems without Glenn adding to the problem.

Wehner was obviously referring to the "conservative movement" circa 1968, which he seems to believe still exists outside a few think tanks.

And the American people will let them off the hook, too.

National amnesia, how does that work?

This is all assuming he is actually crazy, rather than just extremely craven and willing to do anything for ratings.

I'm not entirely sure he's nuts. He might just be a colossal asshole who plays a crazy man for money.

I bet if he does break down the right accuses the Obama/Soros/commie/muslim new world order of slipping him pills or messing with his food or what have you.

If he has a breakdown??? The guy has an hr long breakdown on national TV nightly......it doesn't matter. He hates Barack Obama, the lone requirement for praise from "conservatives."

Well, yes, this is true. I'm thinking of an actual he-can't-show-up-for-work breakdown.

I think they just don't want to admit that they're all being played

The whole conservative movement is a cult of personality. It is Glenn Beck. It is Rush Limbaugh. There's no distancing conservatism from them. It is them.

I fear that, before Beck breaks down either on air or off, he'll do something completely irresponsible, such as calling on some of his "followers" to do something highly illegal, dangerous or both. Something along the lines of a violent attack on (an) elected official(s), a group vs. group clash against non-violent protesters, a bombing, a riot . . . hell, I'm getting scared just thinking about it.
