Far Right Billionaire David Koch: Obama Deserves No Credit for Bin Laden

The far right steadfastly refuses to show a shred of decency
Wingnuts • Views: 28,585

A few right wing politicians have made graceful statements praising President Obama for the bin Laden operation; John McCain, for example. But if you read right wing blogs, you’ll discover a flood of utter denial and mean-spirited refusal to credit Obama. It’s an almost universal opinion, which is how things always go in the rightie blogs these days; it’s become the Internet’s largest hate-fueled echo chamber.

Far right billionaire David Koch sums up the default wingnut position nicely: David Koch Gives President Obama Zero Credit for Bin Laden’s Death.

Strolling toward the dining area last night at the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Spring Ball, he told us that it was the military and intelligence agencies that deserved all the credit, while “all that Obama did was say ‘yea’ or ‘nay,’ we’re going to take him out or not. I don’t think he contributed much at all.” He continued:

He just made the decision, it was obvious where the guy is. He was one of the worst terrorists organizing attacks on the United States. I mean, no president in his right mind would not approve that decision to go eliminate him. So he’s getting a lot of recognition and his polls have jumped up, but his decision was the easiest of them all. The real hard work was done by the intelligence and the SEALs.

One of the world’s most wanted terrorists is hunted down and killed by the Obama administration, and who is David Koch afraid of?

Obama is “a hardcore socialist,” Koch told us, “and he’s marvelous at pretending to be something other than that, but that is what I believe he truly is, a hardcore socialist. He’s scary to me.”

Wow it must be nice to think that the decision to put people's lives in danger, risk a possible confrontation with pakistan, risk failure and the backlash associated with it are all "easy decisions".

So Mr. Koch, how many men have you sent on missions that could conceivably result in their deaths? How many men have you ordered killed in the past...oh, let's say 5 years?

I have little doubt that these same frakwits who now refuse to give Obama credit would waste little time heaping all the blame on him had this mission gone south and OBL escaped.

8 albusteve  Thu, May 5, 2011 11:50:53am

people this stupid should not comment...the vast majority of Americans have no clue how this stuff works

If anyone is an expert on not contributing much at all, but taking a lot of credit, it's one of the fortunate sons of Fred Koch.

10 Four More Tears  Thu, May 5, 2011 11:51:02am

Had something terrible happened, had we lost a SEAL or a chopper or something even slightly tragic, President Obama would be shouldering every ounce of the blame.

See: Operation Eagle Claw

11 Only The Lurker Knows  Thu, May 5, 2011 11:51:45am

And if this had blown up in the Presidents face like the Iran Hostage rescue attempt blew up in Carters face, you would be hearing nothing but how he screwed it all up by (most likely) interfering in the planning of the operation or some such nonsense.

Koch would do best to shut his ugly crinkly face but he's correct in one respect: Obama doesn't really deserve credit for taking down the most wanted terrorist in the world. He deserves credit for simply selecting people competent to do the job. With Bush, it only mattered if you were a Republican and as recent history so clearly demonstrates, competence and republicanism are exclusionary.

If it was so "obvious" where the guy is... why was he there for the last three years of the Bush Administration? Ever since Bush closed the CIA's Bin Laden unit?

Just a coincidence, I'm sure.

36 SidewaysQuark  Thu, May 5, 2011 12:05:21pm

What utter bullshit.

George W Bush is on record as saying that catching Bin Laden was not his "main priority", that an open-ended "war on terror" was. Fail.

Barrack Obama is on record (before he was elected) saying he'd send forces into Pakistan to get Bin Laden if he had to. And he made good on it. Win.

I'm not an avid Bush-hater, but let's face it - he dropped the ball on this one, and Obama picked it up and made a slam dunk.

You're close, but Obama getting Osama is cause for celebrating...the troops. That's right, we celebrate the SEALs, celebrate the CIA, celebrate everybody but Obama. He just gave the order, they carried it out, so he deserves none of the credit.

Really. So in the end, the simple fact that the sole responsibility for the success or failure of this operation rested squarely on the shoulders of the man who ordered it doesn't earn him any credit? Try again.

By that measure, the fact that Koch has selected underlings who continue to run his business successfully means they're more entitled to the wealth his company produces than he is. Think he'll be taking a massive pay cut anytime soon?

AP, Reuters sitting out S.C. debate

The Associated Press announced Wednesday night that it’s not going to cover tomorrow night’s Republican presidential debate, citing “restrictions placed on media access.”

“The debate sponsors, Fox News Channel and the South Carolina Republican Party, will only allow photos to be taken in the moments ahead of the debate and not during the event itself,” the AP said in an advisory to editors.

“These are restrictions that violate basic demands of news-gathering and differ from other debates where more access was granted. Accordingly, the AP will not staff the event in any format nor will the AP disseminate any pool photos taken by another outlet.”

The buck stops here. Obama was on the hook whether the mission failed or was successful.

Obama should rightfully get the credit for the mission just as surely as if Bush had been the one to seal the deal (at say Tora Bora for example).

So, I wouldn't have a problem with this being Obama got Osama month.

The only reason that the GOP and right wingers are playing this game is because it isn't a GOPer in the White House - and especially because it's Obama to have gotten OBL.

A response to Koch:
[Link: swampland.time.com...]

A senior U.S. military official Monday credited President Obama for having a prominent role in pushing and shaping the plan to get Osama bin Laden. “In the final weeks and really months of this, his personal interest and direction and attention pushed the case to a new level that enabled real action,” the official told reporters. “And I think that role is quite important.”

On Tuesday, White House officials began to offer more details on exactly how Obama had shaped the final assault plan. In particular, the President, they said, urged the Pentagon to revisit the number of helicopters it planned to bring into Pakistani airspace on the mission. One of those extra helicopters later played a role in the mission.

The president made his concerns known in a briefing about 10 days before the assault on the bin Laden compound. According to senior aides, Obama felt that the special operations COA, or course of action, was too risky. Under the COA at that time, only two helicopters would enter Pakistani airspace, leaving little backup if something went wrong. “I don’t want you to plan for an option that doesn’t allow you to fight your way out,” the President told operational planners at the meeting, according to the notes of one participant.

So the plan was revised. Ultimately, four helicopters flew into Pakistani airspace, including two refueling helicopters that carried additional personnel. In the end, the extra forces didn’t need to fight their way out of the compound, but a backup helicopter did play a key role in the operation. One of the two primary assault helicopters, an HH-60 Pave Hawk lost its lift, landed hard and had to be destroyed. The backup landed to lift its passengers to safety.

It does make me wonder if Fox and the Republicans might want to minimize coverage of the debate. Most of the Republican front runners don't want to be in the spotlight these days. Maybe the strategy is to lay low for a while until this whole Bin Laden thing blows over.

71 lawhawk  Thu, May 5, 2011 12:27:51pm

BTW, there was a report that someone in the crowd near Ground Zero was arrested after suspected of pulling a gun out of a backpack near Church and Vesey:

Authorities apprehended a man who witnesses say may have pulled a gun out of a backpack as President Barack Obama's motorcade passed today in New York.

The man, who wore a blue hat, had dark curly hair and appeared to be in his 20s, was wearing a backpack. New York Police Department officers and Secret Service agents shouted, "Get down, get down," and tackled the man at the corner of Church and Vessey Streets in lower Manhattan.

Obama had just left the World Trade Center site and his motorcade was turning from Vessey Street to Church Street when the incident occurred in front of the Church Street Station Post Office.

May turn out to be nothing (like someone getting a camera out of their bag and someone overreacting).

All I can say is that it wasn't me (I was in the crowd, but left before the motorcade went past so I missed out on the commotion).

He claimed that toxic smog is good for you because it blocks out sunlight and therefore prevents skin cancer.

So true. I wouldn't be surprised if Giuliani tried to copyright "9/11".

Oddly enough, I haven't heard a comment from him on Osama's death. But then again, I don't watch a lot of tv.

Don't forget about the President telling Panetta from day one to go get Osama....

Yes, the SEALS and intelligence officials deserve a tremendous amount of credit. It's amazing what they accomplished.

But the guy who makes the final call gets A LOT of credit. As he should

Yes, and getting Ebolavirus prevents you from dying of heart disease.

Bottom line: fighting "terror"™ isn't too important to most Americans. Getting the sonofabitch who murdered thousands of us was. Bush didn't realize that. Obama did. The end.

Heard him on BBC World Service arguing that the photos of Bin Laden should be released to "prove" he's really dead.

re: #54 HappyWarrior

The other right wing meme I am tired of is "Obama is arrogant." I said it a few days ago but you have to be arrogant to want the job Obama has. And besides didn't these same people love Bush's cowboy swagger? Obama doesn't strike me as being more or less cocky than his predecessors. It's shallow bullshit.

He could have easily used that national security team photo as an opportunity to look "Presidential" -- hunched over the desk, barking orders or the like -- but there he was, off to the side, unassuming as all get out.

I like to think it was an acknowledgment that there were a *lot* of people involved in this operation, and Obama was giving credit to them by not upstaging them.

Of course, I voted for the guy, so I'm probably inclined to think more highly of him than some. :-)

Getting Bin Laden has the advantage of being less ambiguous a goal and one that's actually achievable. The War On Terror is just a retread of the War On Drugs, a tool that allows politicians to do whatever they want in its name and can never be won or lost because there is no goal.

Yeah I voted for him too. I really think in the eyes of some there really is nothing the guy can do right. I never would have dreamed that we'd get Bin Laden honest. I'm glad the president didn't give up on this. I think those hating on him are just mad because for years they've wanted to portray the president as an appeaser and weak on terrorism and he just blew up their meme big time.

Wait, was Koch the subject here? Oh well, the same principle applies....

92 Feline Emperor of the Conservative Tears  Thu, May 5, 2011 12:57:14pm

Of course Koch is scared. Obama just used the US military to hunt down and kill a multi-millionaire. When you have the green the politics don't matter. You should be able to do what you want, when you want, to whomever you want. And America won't be right until that is the true law of the land.

Looks like he didn't want a replay of Operation Eagle Claw, and he was right for it. Wonder how long it'll be before the accusations of "micro-managing" come in, though.

One thing I note is that this operation wasn't over planned and used as an internal political power play the way the Iran rescue operation was. Just the SEAL team and their transport.

Every one of the major arms got themselves into the Iran mission. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. It's why it became such a clusterfuck.

Nice to see that this was avoided this time around. The KISS principle was applied.

re: #43 Bubblehead II

I don't need to try again, it's just a fact. I give credit to Obama for bringing in smart people who could do the job, and for letting them do their job. Ultimately, that's the best thing any president can ever really do, as president.

BUT, I give far more blame to Bush for being the incompetent president who single-handedly squandered the opportunity to get the job done early.

It's maddening that it took this long.

96 rabit  Thu, May 5, 2011 2:20:05pm

re: #90 talon_262

I'm sure if you had something witty to add here, you don't. My point stands. I blame Bush more than I credit Obama. The fact that it took this long to track down Bin Laden is an embarrassment and nothing really to get giddy about. I'm sure the next terrorist mastermind will think twice - he might die of old age.

97 theheat  Thu, May 5, 2011 4:13:06pm

Mostly, Obama's vision for America means the Kochs can't rape and pillage the rest of us, unabated. If the Kochs (and the GOP) are supposed to represent freedom and democracy and Obama supposedly represents socialism, I'll take Obama's flavor of socialism any day.

Since Obama also showed himself to be a bit of a dragonslayer, it's freed up the GOP to go back to what they promised:

job creation.

//

That scares the shit out of them. That's why they're going for the soft targets: women's rights, gay rights, attacking the environment, health care, union busting, institutionalized religion, and misspelled ALL CAPS communication.
