Awe-Inspiring Video of Shuttle Endeavor Docked to ISS

All it needs is a Strauss waltz
Science • Views: 37,119

For a change of pace from the nasty details of Anthony Weiner’s creepy “sexting” and Andrew Breitbart’s creepy lies, here’s a simply gorgeous video released today by NASA, shot by astronauts aboard a Soyuz spacecraft that had just undocked from the International Space Station.

Looks so nice and clean up there.

This country's going to miss those shuttles...

I still can't believe that we first went all the way back to capsules and then even abandoned those...

God went down to Eden to see how Adam was getting on.

"What do you think of life Adam"said God.
"Well"said Adam"It's quite hard work and a little boring and, well, just a little lonely too".
"Don't worry"declared God"I've been working on a solution to all these problems.I'm going to create a Woman. She'll wash and cook for you and she'll have sex with you whenever you want.Infact she'll do everything you can imagine".

"That sounds great" said Adam"but how much will this Woman cost me?"

"I was thinking an arm and a leg" answered God

"That sounds a bit steep what can I get for a rib"

God created Earth.

Brilliant. He also then created an Earth that was utterly hostile to life for a pretty frakking long time until methanogenic organisms came along and started producing oxygen as a waste product. Oops! Too much oxygen builds up in the atmosphere and it reacts with all the iron cations in the oceans and falls to the sea bed as a banded iron formation. Wash, rinse and repeat for the next billion years of so until everything that can be oxidized is oxidized and you geta significant build up of free O2 in the atmosphere that starts wiping out all the methanognic organisms. Wonderful! Oxygen is poisonous! But it also allows for a far more efficient cell energy exchange and so God (I guess, according to you) decided it would be good idea to allow critters that process oxygen to start appearing and Bingo! We have the dawn of the Cambrian!

Yep.

His daughter was Sheerah, who built Lower and Upper Beth Horon as well as Uzzen Sheerah.

And like that, this woman disappears on us. Architect? Tribal leader? Hod-carrier extraordinaire? Who knows?

Yeah, I remember some suggestions that the Burgess Shale fauna were actually Ediacarian, but in my Paleontology class last year, I found they are now considered early Cambrian. I am not versed well enough on late Cryptozoic life to really debate this in depth. One interesting thing drifting around is the snowball earth hypothesis where late Pre-Cambrian (or Cryptozoic, if you prefer) Earth was mostly frozen over.

There are many thousands of genuinely educated clergy (as opposed to informally "called" hucksters) and millions of Christians who have no problem at all with the theory of evolution or the age of the Earth. This was in fact the prevailing view in Christian circles for decades, from the early 20th century until the rise of sound bite televangelism in the 80s. It is still the prevailing view among many denominations, including the largest, the Roman Catholic Church.

re: #182 Slumbering Behemoth

I had to cheat, so I'll STFU. That's one tale I have not read.

It's pretty good, and the section that parallels the Biblical flood story is fascinating. The key difference between them, to my eye, is that while in the Sumerian story there is a conflict going on between the gods over the flood, and whether to destroy mankind completely. Enlil is in favor, it's Ea who tips off the Noah figure to get some stuff together and try to ride it out, and Ishtar who promises over the destruction never to permit such a thing to happen again. In the Genesis text, all of this is understood as one God, which either makes less sense, or adds psychological depth to the divine, however you want to see it.

Deucalion and Pyrrha, from the Greeks, is similar in outline, but not as clearly an earlier form of the same story. Biblical text is heavily layered with earlier West Semitic texts, and some turns of phrase remain intact to drive interpreters nuts for generations. Genesis 1:26 and all that jazz.

We all categorize people based on the information we have of them. The more information, the more accurate the placement. Much as we'd like to, we simply don't have the brain capacity to categorize everyone into his own group.

I have a category called creationist where I stuff everyone who discounts evolution. They all get the same treatment from me, but I do give them opportunity to show me I've made mistakes. Many have even been moved from that category, while others have travelled closer to the centre.

That means it is a an Mg rich amphibole (a hydrous mafic mineral class associated with fairly silica rich igneous rocks and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks) that has little crystal symetry.

Totally OT, but fascinating (to me).

I got a call today from a city halfway across the country which I have never visited. A racket club there had found a cell phone, and our cell phone was on it under "Aunt Em."* They figured I would be most likely to know whose phone it was out of all the numbers on it. They were right, of course. Only one person would have me listed as that who lives in this town.

Hopefully, my nephew has nothing scandalous on his phone that the good ladies at the front desk got to view. Snicker.

*I'm sure it shocks you that my nephews and nieces find it hysterical to refer to me as "Auntie Em."

307 Charles Johnson  Wed, Jun 8, 2011 6:59:26pm

The main difference between the Bible and the Koran is that the Bible is better organized.

But both books come from an era in which women were chattel, life was short, and people were often murdered on a whim. And both books reflect that reality.

The Koran is no more brutal than the Bible. Both books contain numerous stories of horrific abuse at the hand of God. And that's because both books were written by people who were confused and awed by a world they didn't understand, and invented supernatural reasons to explain the seemingly random brutality they had to endure.

I've been working on a Page (yeah, one of many unfinished works...) that I've titled "The Magick Book and the American" (or something like that) - I suppose I should finish it.

On one forum the past few days I also have experimented with engaging some creationists with the problem that genetics brings to their belief system. Nothing new (as far as what to expect), but it does reinforce my belief that people will simply avoid anything that challenges their most cherished beliefs, regardless of merit of the challenge.

To the beginning of that--the creation story from Genesis is retold, as I recall. There's also borrowing/incorporation from a range of other sources--the Midrash of God holding Sinai over the heads of the people to coerce them into accepting the Torah is referenced in the Koran.

Probably a lot of stuff I don't recognize, as well.

Any discussion about abortion has to take into consideration both the mother and child first.

Politics and religious ideologies are not of primary concern.

Guttmacher Institute:

That abortion is becoming increasingly concentrated among poor women suggests the need for better contraceptive access and family planning counseling. It certainly appears these women are being underserved,” says study author Rachel K. Jones. “Antiabortion restrictions and cuts to publicly funded family planning services disproportionately affect poor women, making it even more difficult for them to gain access to the contraceptive and abortion services they need.”

Romney draws early fire from conservatives over views on climate change

Romney’s reviews from the right are not positive. His views about climate change in particular put him at odds with many in his party’s base.

“Bye-bye, nomination,” Rush Limbaugh said Tuesday on his radio talk show after playing a clip of Romney’s climate remark. “Another one down. We’re in the midst here of discovering that this is all a hoax. The last year has established that the whole premise of man-made global warming is a hoax and we still have presidential candidates that want to buy into it.”

Then came the Club for Growth, which issued a white paper criticizing Romney. “Governor Romney’s regulatory record as governor contains some flaws,” the report said, “including a significant one — his support of ‘global warming’ policies.”

And Conservatives4Palin.com, a blog run by some of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin’s more active supporters, posted an item charging that Romney is “simpatico” with President Obama after he “totally bought into the man-made global warming hoax.”

My sister's husband took care of it two years later when they talked the squid into giving up his rights (I think it was the money, actually) so that husband could adopt.

Yes, she probably could have severed his rights eventually, with his record, but by then the baby would have been 3 months old, and she knew that she wouldn't be able to by then.

Yes of course. There are far too many women out there who enjoy carrying a fetus for 8 or 10 weeks, then go through the pleasure of abortion, because they simply can't bear the pain of a condom, or other form of preventative birth control.

Sorry, I know that reeked of the theatre of the absurd, but the meme you repeated, and whether you meant it that way or not, the way the anti-abortionists present the argument strongly implies that attitude. I don't care for any of it. I think too many people around here act the same way about atheism that the kids handing out Bibles on campus do about Christianity.

That said, most of them are related to someone who take the Bible as holy text.

The crap notions floating around about the Koran are crap. Trying to throw it into the balance would only make sense if the people moaning about the Bible were Muslims. Which they are not.

Well, evolution (and every other scientific concept, theory and law) will ALWAYS be incomplete. (Not a bad thing - keeps scientists in a job :-) )

I don't take issue with the 'rational religious' type. I don't think freedom could survive without them. In fact, I find the decline of this particular demographic category quite worrysome.

if you don't think that a high percentage of over 4m abortions are due to poor or no judgement at all, avoidable, and are last minute desperation abortions, then you are naive

I'll accept your premise when you can measure poor judgement a quantifiable terms.

..and filter genuine poor personal judgement from environmental effects like insufficient or no sexual education, base failure rate of contraceptives, unintentional error resulting in improper use of contraceptives....

...but you'd also have to create a cross-factor analysis for poor restraint exercised by all varieties of rapists, all situations in which a man can lie about being safe for whatever motive, and all situations in which social connections can be used to coerce a woman into unsafe sex.

...and you'd also need a force-multiplication variable for desperation that measured contextual factors that affect timing and capacity for pursuit of an abortion: you know, everything a woman experiences that might frighten her, mislead her, shame her, threaten her with physical harm, threaten her with spiritual damnation, or threaten her with ostracism.

So yeah.
