He very well could have correctly said “Being homosexual is not a sin”.
Because it isn’t.
What my religion frowns on is sex outside of marriage - whether homosexual or heterosexual. Both are sinful.
But the mere fact that one is homosexual is not in any way a sin.
And besides which, we don’t play God and judge the extent of sinfulness of others.
We know what is legal or illegal, and judge that. But final judgment on the sinfulness (or lack of) in others is not our job.

Romney is just another politician showing contempt for the media. In recent years, this contempt has become especially clear and open on the Republican side.
Unfortunately, some of this contempt is well-deserved. In 2008, Sarah Palin proved that you can be the nominee of a major party for the Vice Presidency, and never have to hold a single press conference.
Even CNN, which I usually like, stoops to the unbearable ritual of “talking heads” spinning against one another. People like Paul Begala and Dana Lasch make me change the channel. So with a media like this, there’s some justification is a politician like Romney contemptuously brushes off the media. The media needs to do more real journalism.

Get government out of “marriage.” It is a loaded term. Make EVERYONE (gay, straight, bi and Baha’i - just cause it rhymed) that wants government benefits for being coupled have a civil union.
Then, if you want the couple to be recognized by a church, have a ceremony in a church that matches your belief. Then, the government would have no right to tell anyone they could not “get married” as it would be a freedom of religion thing.

Let’s face it, homosexuals are a significant chunk of the electorate. Kinsey said 5%, but even if it was say… 2%, that would have been enough to throw the last election if they had all voted as a single bloc.
What Romney’s doing is trying to blow the anti-gay dog whistle as loud as he can, while trying to not let that 2% know what he’s doing.
It’s the same thing with all the other minority groups the Republicans have demonized and ostracized, from atheists/agnostics to Hispanics and African-Americans. The white, straight, anglo-saxon Protestant voting group is doomed to no longer have a plurality, let alone a majority, in the relatively near future, and there is simply no way to reverse that.
All they have left is that dog whistle, and all they can do is blow it harder and harder, trying to increase the turnout of their dwindling base through leveraging more and more fear and anger, in a last-ditch attempt to out-number everyone else at the polls.
It’s just not going to work forever, and when they eventually concede and start trying to pretend they never held the positions they do now, it’s up to folks like LGF to remind the world what they used to stand for.

In the case of R candidates these days, however, they’ve brought this on themselves by turning so far toward their various religions as the basis of their politics, rather than what’s right, proper, ethical, in the best interest of all, etc.

Virginia” apparently agreed that racial separation was God’s will and that mankind must not reverse that principle. He ignored the principle of separation of church and state as well as the equal protection clause in the U.S. Constitution when finding the Loving family guilty of miscegenation. Part of his ruling stated:
“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races show that he did not intend for the races to mix.”

I could see Perry getting the nod. The competition isn’t that great, and he doesn’t have the ideological baggage of a Romney. He’s much closer in philosophy to the tea partiers and the gop base (to the extent that there’s any difference between those two groups).
I would love nothing more than for Rick Perry to get the Republican nomination. Perry refused to participate in any debates during the last Texas GOOBER-NATORIAL election, because any and all of the candidates, including the millionaire kook from Houston (Farouk Shami) would have chewed him up the way the shitty tape deck in your 1984 Toyota Tercel chewed up your Dokken tape right when you were about to finally get to third base with Julie Flannagan during the guitar solo in “Alone Again”.
Perry is everything that Tea Party types supposedly hate about “WORSHINGTON”. He has been a politician his entire adult life, and has never held a private-sector job post-college. He started his career as a Democrat and switched to the GOP as soon as the Texas wind started blowing that way.

We really are going to look back on this the same way we do now opponents of civil rights. There is no reason why under the law gay couples shouldn’t have the same rights as straight couples. The big difference I can think of Romney and Obama on this issue is that Obama doesn’t seem to supporting banning gay marriage. Romney meanwhile seems to have no problem with that. Personally, I think they’re both wrong and pandering on the issue but Obama is more correct on the issue. Now, that said, it would be great if Obama said you know this is a stupid issue, of course gays can marry, who am I to tell two adults in love who they can marry? But you might say I am a dreamer.

It’s a reality that I am frankly surprised to see them acknowledging. Since in the past, I’ve seen gay marriage opponents shrug youth support of gay marriage and equality as products of “youthful liberalism” even though it’s something at least in my experiences that young people of many political backgrounds have a consensus on. Of course, not everyone in my demographic supports gay marriage but support is more widespread throughout ideology in ours than any other one.

I’ve figured that the difference between a legal union and a marriage is that one is done in court while the other is done in a religious institution - and while I support full-rights legal unions I don’t understand why gays would follow up on that to get married when it’s clear that religion clearly does not consider them even human.
Someone here, perhaps Iceweasel, pointed me to a large body of laws spread through the state and Fed governments, that mark real-world things happen only on the condition of ‘marriage’.

You’re wrong about that. These arguments for legalized same sex marriage did not just drop out of the sky. The Metropolitan Community Church and United Church of Christ have been doing same sex marriages since the 1970s. Reform Judaism officially for 15 years.
People should just be direct and say they believe heterosexuals deserve special rights over same sex based on arbitrary characteristics like who one goes to bed with. There is no other explanation for a rationale that government should grant limited rights to one group and full rights to another.

Just saw this.
Two points about marriage:
1. Some gay people are religious. I think religion is nuts, but if straight people can be nuts, why can’t gay people? There are enough modern and inclusive religion streams for them to follow.
2. Marriage is not a religious thing. If a Jewish man can marry a Muslim woman, surely it’s not religious union. I got married to another man in a courtroom in Toronto by a judge. It was and still is marriage.

He says he’s not for it, but is for some type of “separate but equal” (my words) version of it. “Gay Marriage” as an issue doesn’t poll well in the African American community, and I think he was being as calculating as Romney was in trying to squeeze out the last vote.
Correction, doesn’t poll well (what polls?) in the same elements of the African American community than any other community: the Bible-banging bigot element. I’m tired of this old meme.
Prop 8 was passed with Catholic and Mormon carpetbag money - neither of those are Black denominations. In areas with large Black populations, e.g. Bay Area, Prop 8 lost, despite this mythical anti- gay marriage Black vote. In LA county it barely won, 50.1%/49.9%. It passed in ALL the white areas, often with 70%+ [Link: 1.usa.gov…]
Personally, I’m glad Wright wasn’t available. That’s all we need is a crank speaking for us, as if we don’t already have enough problems.

Here’s Mitt Romney making it clear that he separates church and state.
He’s not a spokesman for the Mormon church, as he has explained, and he doesn’t think that theological stances ought to be the deciding factor in how politicians govern.
This is far from pathetic. It’s the same stance Kennedy took. It’s a time honored tradition in the U.S.
Imagine if Obama were put to the same test. What could he say? The Bible isn’t all that ambiguous on the topic, and he’s an avowed Christian. Any answer he might give would necessarily break either with literal believers, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian, or with the secular humanist majority.
And it’s irrelevant, to a politician who separates church and state, what he believes about whether this, that, or the other is a sin. From the mainstream Christian perspective, drunkeness is a sin, but we don’t outlaw it. And he wouldn’t want to.
Gluttony likewise. And sloth. The list is endless. Decisions about which laws to promote, which bills to veto, and so forth, must be made on the basis of what is good for national cohesion, national economics, and so forth. People will have to tend to their own souls.
We could look at peoples’ personal lives and get a clue as to what they believe sinful. Maybe. But people do all sorts of things that they will readily acknowledge to be sinful.
Romney’s personal life is about as clean as you’re going to find, by all evidence currently available. And on the other hand, he has no record at all of any busybody tendencies.
This is basic, beginner American philosophy. And it’s far from “pathetic”.

Just like Obama’s parents wouldn’t have wanted to settle for a civil union either back then.
The POLITICAL issue isn’t whether gay people should be able to get married-married, but whether social security benefits, spousal testimony immunity, and the like should be extended to any pair of men or pair of women who would like to enter into a contract to share their finances, inherit without taxes, and file joint tax returns.
So, Daddy Warbucks and Sonny Warbucks are talking over how to protect the family fortune from the tax man. As things now stand, there’s no way. But change the law, and new options present themselves.
If the law is going to be changed, it would be best to change it in the legislature, and think through these things. A carefully worded law could extend the current federal marriage code to cover the union of exactly two, unrelated, not already married, men, or exactly two, unrelated, not already married, women, while closing off some ways the system could be gamed.

It is absolutely reasonable to demand that people don’t morally judge homosexuals or anyone else based on sex, race, etc.

You know what? I disagree with him that gays couldn’t marry. But as for the “nice try” answer, I don’t have a problem with it. Some questions just shouldn’t be answered. For example, what if (as media once asked Tancredo who gave a terrible response) what should the US do if terrorists attacked us with nuclear weapons. I think most people know exactly what the US would do in that case, but doesn’t make it diplomatic to answer it out loud. As for a moral question, suppose someone asked me if incest was wrong. Well, I know what my personal position is, but I also know not to inject personal opinion into running a country. That Romney knows the difference and knows not to answer divisive questions show he is of more serious material than other Republican candidates. It wouldn’t make it enough for me to vote for him, but I can agree with his appraoch.

We must be working from different definitions of secularism then. Secularism isn’t a synonym for atheism or agnosticism, it just means belief in the separation of church and state. Secularists can be any religion or none at all. There is no contradiction between believing in sin and being a secularist.

I’m sorry, but Romney gave appropriate answers to the questions posed to him and you do not to justice to the context in which Romney said “nice try.”
Romney’s answer was not “evasive,” the reporter simply didn’t like the answer he got.
The reporter asked “Are you in favor of gay marriage?” and Romney replied “I believe a marriage is between a man and a woman.” Thus, the reporter’s subsequent repetition of the question was nonsensical. If one defines marriage as exclusively between a man and a women, then “gay marriage” is nonsensical
Romney clearly answered the reporter’s question and simply refused to give a different answer to the same question oft-repeated.
When Romney gave the same answer to the same question, the reporter should have asked a different question (e.g. why do you define marriage as only being between a man and a woman?) It is the reporter, not Romney, that comes off badly in that exchange.
So far as Romney’s “nice try” response, it in the context of him effectively defending the non-establishment clause of the US Constitution, that one’s personal religious beliefs should not be relevant so long as one does does not attempt to compel others to conform to those beliefs. When Canada’s Prime Minister introduced Canada’s gay marriage law, he said — “as a catholic” — he believed that it was a sin, but he favored it anyway; yet there is no way he would have been so blunt as describing being gay as a “sin” when campaigning.
Once Romney said that his private religious beliefs are not up for discussion, it was inappropriate for the reporter to press the issue. A valid question on the part of the reporter could have been “Would you veto a bill allowing for gay marriage?” That is a valid question probing how one’s private religious views effects one’s public actions, but it is not some equivalent to a Test Oath as the reporter was trying to provoke.

To clarify, on the matter of how one defines marriage, let’s be clear that I believe that permitting gay marriage is good policy and that the overwhelming majority of opposition to gay marriage is rooted in irrational homophobia. (Personally, I can not understand how anyone can rationally call themselves a “social conservative” while opposing a policy that encourages people to enter into stable relationship and raise children.)
However, I do not believe access to marriage for gays is an equality right equivalent fair practices in pay, employment, housing, etc and opposition to gay marriage is not axiomatically a denial of equal rights.
For example, I have a friend (who jokingly refers to me as a “breeder”) who opposes gay marriage because he feels that it has undermined the historic libertine gay culture. While he, grudgingly, admits that marriage may be acceptable for “breeders” like me, he does not want to see the practice extended. I hardly think you could characterize his opposition to gay marriage as a denial of equal Rights is rooted in irrational homophobia.
A society that puts the infringement of equality rights beyond the reach of majorities should nevertheless significantly be able to define marriage as it sees fit because marriage is not a matter of fundamental equality, but a mechanism that we use to to endow privileges, protections, and status to certain social relationships that we believe enhance the functioning of our society.
For those tempted to bring up the analogy of miscegenation laws, please first reflect on the fact that when we had miscegenation laws we also had race segregated bathrooms; to wit, the adoption of interracial marriage was accompanied with the outlawing of race-segregated bathrooms, while the adoption of gay marriage (where it has occurred) has yet to followed with the outlawing of sex-segregated bathrooms. We recognize the complimentary nature of sex that render comparisons to race, religion, etc inappropriate in certain (very limited) circumstances.
As such, it is a reasonable argument, for example, (though not necessarily one I agree with) that marriage should be denied to gays because it is better that children grow up in families with sex complimentary parents and that we accord greater status to such relationships to promote them (thus why even infertile, etc couples are allowed to marry). In context, that argument doesn’t hold water for me given the prevalence of single parents and divorce, abuse, etc amongst married couples and thus preventing gays from marrying seems it like should be at the bottom of anyone’s list of dealing with social “ills.”
Devoid of context, the argument that marriage should be extended to gays is as equally valid as the argument that we should accept polygamous marriages. However, I favor gay marriage and oppose polygamy yet find no inconsistency in that view because, in context, I know that polygamy is overwhelmingly characterized by abuse and exploitation and thus oppose it and do not feel such opposition violates anyones rights, because marriage is not a “right.” If gay marriage was characterized by abuse and exploitation in the way that polygamy is, I would oppose gay marriage.
