Prosser allegedly grabbed fellow justice by the neck

...They say an argument that occurred before the court’s release of a decision upholding a bill to curtail the collective bargaining rights of public employees culminated in a physical altercation in the presence of other justices. Bradley purportedly asked Prosser to leave her office, whereupon Prosser grabbed Bradley by the neck with both hands.

I've been working on bits of code all week, optimizing and refactoring some functions. One change that probably gives the perception of faster loading -- the Featured Pages and Recent Pages are now preloaded along with the rest of the page instead of being called through Ajax after the page loads. So the page will seem to be completely finished loading a bit faster (even though it was still readable even while the Pages sections were loading w/ Ajax).

Once again Charles all the videos on the page have jumped, this thread shows "Altissimo" where "Surf Zapping" should be, "Chute" is where "Altissimo" should be and "Joad" is where "Chute" should be.

This seems to happen every time I use the back button either from a thread or a member page to reach the main page. Not a hugh problem, I just reload the page, still it is kinda annoying.

BTW, if you have any "Borders Books" gift cards use them right now! There may no longer be a Borders after this weekend, they are in bankruptcy and are requesting another 30 million dollars in emergency financing to be approved by the court. The people willing to give them the new money of course want first claim on Border's assets to ensure they are repaid, over all the other debtors that Borders already has.

No the stores wont all be closed on Monday or anything like that, but they sure as hell will not be accepting your gift cards once the business is taken over by the court as insolvent.

Authorities say two explosive devices were found inside a store at the Colorado Mills Mall after an apparent break-in overnight "partially functioned." Notice they use the phrase "net... income". There's a big difference between net income and gross receipts, especially in ag.

I notice that there wasn't much (if any) discussion on one of the bigger news stories that happened this week: the Administration's decision to go ahead and release oil from the SPR, as part of a coordinated move by the OECD countries to release oil worldwide.

There is much to this story, especially under the hood. Not the least of which is Libya, but also that "oil" is not all "oil", that the differential qualities of actual petroleum make a difference to refineries, that KSA may nor may not be able to produce enough of the right kind of petroleum, that the US and the KSA are coordinating policy, etc.

Oh well... off to the gym.

If I were looking for budget cuts I'd start with agribusiness subsidies. Turning fuel into food into fuel was just a dumb idea from the start. Turning microbes (and kudzu) into fuel makes much more sense if it can be done efficiently.

43 Charles Johnson  Sat, Jun 25, 2011 3:12:33pm

For some reason known only to them, someone has been playing with a script of some kind that repeatedly loads the URLs of our shortened links that are posted on Twitter. In effect, they're artificially inflating the numbers that show up in our tweet buttons at top right of each article. I won't even speculate on why.

The last article that got "inflated" like this was the "Fox News Headlines" article, now showing 672 clicks. Here's the bit.ly stats page for it - if you set the drop down menu at the right of the 'clicks' graph to "24 hours, you can see that the script ran last night around 8 pm PDT, adding 570 clicks in that period.

[Link: bitly.com...]

I can't do anything to block them with bit.ly's control panel, so for now I'll just let them pump up the numbers if that's what floats their boats.

Newt, classy as always:

Gingrich: It’s a depression, not a recession

The U.S. is experiencing an economic depression — not a recession, Newt Gingrich said this morning in Indianola.

The former Speaker of the House said the 14 million Americans who are out of work and the climbing national debt prompted him to run for the GOP presidential nomination. [yeah, right, had nothing to do with ego...]

Pres. Ronald Reagan used tax cuts and deregulation to spur economic and job growth in the ‘80s, and the same strategy would work today, Gingrich said.

Obama is the food stamp president,” he told a crowd of roughly 50 at the local Pizza Ranch. “I want to be the pay check president.”

It's a good time to be rich, though:

Merrill Lynch finds rich are getting richer

Despite a gloomy economic outlook, slower-than-expected job creation, fights over the U.S. debt ceiling and turmoil in the Europe, the world’s millionaires are continuing to get richer.

The world’s rich boosted their wealth by almost 10 percent last year to $42.7 trillion. That was down from a 19 percent increase in 2009, according to the annual World Wealth Report by Merrill Lynch and Capgemini.
That’s greater than the growth of the world¹s entire gross domestic product, which grew only 3.9 percent in 2010.

The food's cheap and they have big tables, plus they're quite willing to host private events at low cost. They are also seen as "ordinary people places". If a Republican group held an event in an upscale private dining room, the Democratic response would be to call them "Out of touch elitists, living lives disconnected from the concerns of everyday people. They're the party of the rich." Using a pizza parlor avoids that charge.

Yes, Regan cut taxes, then he raised them...several times.
Newt is a jerk.

Like I said the other day, the real Reagan, as opposed to St. Reagan that the Right now worships, would have been run out of the party for being a "tax-and-spend RINO." Of course, they've been trying to consolidate the two, claiming that Reagan was a firm believer in tax cuts, but the Democrat-controlled Congress overrode him, but that's a load of shit.

Notorious Hacker Group LulzSec Just Announced That It's Finished

LulzSec, the notorious hacker group that's been on a rampage, just announced that it's disbanding.

This follows 50 days chaos during which time it took down several websites (including CIA.gov at one point), exposed passwords, exposed documents of the Arizona penal system, and at one point threatened to hit Too Big To Fail banks.

The Lulz statement can be found at link.

Darth, reading about the Empire St Bldg going rainbow last night. They did it for the gay pride, but they originally had it planned for something else:

They were ready to flick the switch because the lights had been changed or installed more than six months ago when the building was last seen sporting that fabulous purple and red glow. Not for Gay Pride, which is celebrated in June across the United States, but for a Furthur show, according to Phish message boards.

Is a skin cell a human? A blastocyst may be a potential human because it contains the same DNA a skin cell has, but there is a less than 1 probability it will reach maturation. That blastocyst, along with larger collections of cells may contain the same DNA as a human, but the environment it develops in has a huge impact on whether or not it ends up human.

The environment those cells develop in determine cell differentiation and roll, so placing a cell with the same DNA into a different mammal will likely result in an organism neither you nor I would call human.

My point is, that the makeup of the cell, shortly after conception, is not enough to make it a human.

We need to determine not only what makes a human DNA filled cell different than other organisms, but why our actions towards them should be different.

I wouldn't say not human...then again, the eggs we shed each month we're not pregnant are also human, also carry the potential for human life.

So are/do the embryos that so often miscarry. Not everything that's potentially a human being comes to birth.

what does medical abilities have to do with my question? if it is not the beginnings of a human, what is it?

Our medical abilities determine when an embryo becomes viable which is part of determining the embryo's 'humanness'.

A gamete isn't human. A zygote isn't human. A blastocyst isn't human. An embryo at 36 weeks is a human. What's the difference between a blastocyst and a human?

To be blunt... it doesn't matter to me if we define an embryo as a person or not. I will never vote to force a woman to suffer that burden if she wishes to choose not to.

That said, the rate of stillbirths and miscarriages should be enough to prove that birth is not a certainty after conception, potential be damned.

Think back to your vivid memories of your time as a fetus. Remember your chronic headaches, that feeling of having three legs, and that constant dead-animal smell that just wouldn't go away? Remember the agony of doubling in size in less than a month, like a scene in "An American Werewolf in London"?

Bachmann Neck and Neck with Romney in Iowa

Just two weeks after announcing her White House bid, Michele Bachmann is neck and neck with the early favorite for the Republican nomination, Mitt Romney, according to the first Des Moines Register Iowa Poll of the 2012 Republican presidential field.

Romney, who spent about $10 million in Iowa in his 2008 campaign only to come in second, received support from 23 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers, the newspaper reported late Saturday. Bachmann, who will officially launch her campaign in Iowa on Monday, is statistically tied at 22 percent. Herman Cain came in third place with 10 percent.

Twilight of the Cockroaches is an incredibly strange meditation on survival, told from the point of view of a young female cockroach living with her family in the apartment of a complete slob whom they love. Disaster arises when he finds a girlfriend, who starts cleaning. Mostly anime, with live-action segments from the perspective of the human characters. It includes, for reasons that never made any sense to me at all, a German-accented visiting cockroach with blond bangs, and a bizarre encounter with an ancestral cockroach spirit occupying a toy rabbi that's been thrown into an empty lot.

Toy RABBIT. A toy rabbi, however, would not have actually made the whole thing that much more surreal. And, checking, I find that that I've misremembered slightly. Hans, the German cockroach, is actually a brunette.

Seriously right now, LOL. Rabbit v. Rabbi

I watched it a few years ago when they had shows on that showed how to prepare dishes. My sister and I loved to laugh over Sandra Lee. (I've never seen anyone put capers in kid's food before.) But we recently re-engaged cable and I was disappointed to discover you can have crap reality TV even on a cooking channel.

They don't oppose American intervention, they just don't trust Obama to do it. Of course, such a resolution has no chance in the Senate, since Lindsay Graham and John McCain have already announced they'll oppose it.

Sat Night in the Ozarks..
There is a tribute to the American Spirit here...Most of the local media is about Joplin...Local radio Ad's give out business names and people and where they moved and their new phone number..And after seeing what looks like a bombed out city nobody will have the same phone number...
The local news covers the rebuilding and the stories of the day..
Facebook, Twitter and other social media will have a big impact with how this City rebuilds in the future..But more importantly..Their Spirit here is amazing and inspiring
On the lighter side...There is a local news channel that has this most smoking hot blonde weather girl...
I figure she is about 2 years away from either being a Fox weather girl or somebody in the Valley doing P0rn flicks with a bad coke habit..
