I’ll have a post later about my first impressions of Mac OS Lion (nutshell: very favorable overall, with some caveats), but in the meantime here’s a midday open thread, old school, like we used to do it back in the day.

re: #1 dragonfire1981

I actually got some pretty cool stuff when a friend of ours decided to empty out her soon-to-be-ex-husband's storage locker. I felt a little guilty until she told me what a dick he had been, and how he left her with the storage rental bill while he moved out with his (much) younger girlfriend.

I got some antique woodworking tools, old Stanley planes, hand drills.... she also gave away his router, table saw, dremel, and all kinds of motorcycle parts.

Jackpot!

I spent today at Stony Brook University on LI - my wife works for Microsoft, and for the past 5 years she's been running something called 'DigiGirlz Camp,' in which girls from all over the island are brought to the school in an effort to get them interested in jobs in technology.

I did a presentation on Digital Recording. Me and a lecture hall full of high school girls recorded a pretty kick-ass version of Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night.'

Now I have to mix it for distribution to all participants sometime next week. Some of those kids can really sing.

By the way -- you can now pop up the LGF Connect Twitter posting form at any time by typing Control-t. If you're not logged in you'll be given the option to do that session-only authorization thing I described earlier.

re: #4 Cannadian Club Akbar

Craig's List.

I've tried to give stuff away on Craigslist. Wine corks, dinette set, new portable A/C, flute, books, all kinds of things. I have yet to successfully rid myself of one single item. But I have been harassed by phone and e-mail, and had crackheads show up at my house, and one woman even came by and terrorized my roommate - knocking on all the doors and windows for more than 10 minutes while my poor roommate (who had no idea I was offering up an A/C unit) called the cops and locked herself in the bathroom.

No. About six years ago, I went through a move from my in-law's old house to a new one. I love my husband, and his moms, but he comes by his packrat tendencies honestly.

No, no, no. Seriously, I'm just happy if someone can make use of it and it isn't gathering dust in my house. I despise waste.

17 Charles Johnson  Thu, Jul 21, 2011 3:55:51pm

And another small change you might have already noticed -- when you log in with the form at the top of the left sidebar it now reloads the page after authenticating you. That's deliberate -- ensures that all the various parts of everything are working correctly with each other.

With a lot of user customization options it's simpler to let the server-side code handle all the setup, rather than trying to walk through the whole DOM and change things from a logged-out to a logged-in state. So it reloads now (like most other sites).

I wrote a blog post at the time, while I was throwing stuff out, and donating stuff, and generally trying to wrestle with fifteen years of in-law STUFF, to the effect that the reason the Third World is so low on stuff was that all of it was at my house.

Regarding Lion, it's weird how the new default "natural" scrolling direction only feels right on a touch screen iOS device.

One girl who did a couple of the verses asked about autotune because she was concerned that some of her high notes were a little flat.

As you said, it's strange to make that the default setting. We've been using touchscreens for a while and swiping up to scroll down, and at the same time using our scroll wheel the opposite way. Seems like a fix to a problem that never existed.

Whenever I fly, I buy a copy of "Innocents Abroad" by Mark Twain. I read what I can during the flight, then leave it in the magazine pocket on the back of the seat in front of me, hoping someone else will pick it up and enjoy it as much as I do.

49 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Thu, Jul 21, 2011 4:45:32pm

Oh brother...

And by the way, ladies and gentlemen, this is a clear indication that the Left has lost the argument and the debate in public policy. Because name-calling is the first refuge of a man who does not have an argument. As soon as someone starts calling you names, then realize they're out of ammunition, they're out of arguments. They can't reason with you any longer, they don't have facts on their side, they don't have reason on their side, they don't have logic on their side, they don't have history on their side, they don't have research on their side, they don't have science on their side so they start calling you things like a "Nazi gas bag."

It does make sense for Apple to have one consistent default behavior across operating systems, especially for if and when they start marketing touch screens for desktops and powerbooks. What's weird is that I didn't even notice that the two gestures were opposites until Lion made them the same.

How's this for excitement

House across the street from me has been vacant/ for sale for over a year now

Real estate company used to have a professional company come by once every two weeks to mow, edge and weed

To cut back on costs, they now have "amateurs" doing it about once a month

The crew thats over there right now has a small non-commercial riding mower that they can't get started as well as a small push mower that keeps choking out

The front yards of both that house and mine are about the same size. I do mine in about 45 minutes with a riding mower

They've already been there for over 2 hours and it's only about half done!

These girls did just fine. The girl who was concerned about flat notes made me laugh a little, because I've done vocal tracks on stuff that was released that wasn't as true as her track was pitch-wise.

Somebody needs to come up with a version of Rock Band where kids actually learn to read some dang notes. Now that there's those Fender controllers out, might as well go all the way and be the real thing.

I forgot where, but I did see that some company was building Rock Band controllers into 'real' guitars. But it's still the same 4-button controller that does nothing to teach kids to play.

I can play guitar, but put a Rock Band controller in my hands and I just can't do it.

These girls did just fine. The girl who was concerned about flat notes made me laugh a little, because I've done vocal tracks on stuff that was released that wasn't as true as her track was pitch-wise.

I forgot where, but I did see that some company was building Rock Band controllers into 'real' guitars. But it's still the same 4-button controller that does nothing to teach kids to play.

I can play guitar, but put a Rock Band controller in my hands and I just can't do it.

Actually, Rock Band 3 has a mode where you play the real song on a real instrument, midi pickups detect the notes, etc:

I used to buy houses full of stuff and initially tried to sell it, but it takes too long for what it's worth. Dragonforce sucks, mastodon rules :D

Really, for all his perceived speed, Herman Li cannot play what Brent Hinds does. Li just plays really fast box scales. Brent Hinds plays metal like a banjo player, holds his pick AND uses his other fingers to pluck strings. Busts out surf solos, busts out banjo licks, then Gilmour-esque blues solos, he's a golden god

Also, Dragonforce is protools metal, it's all autotuned and massaged. mastodon plays that shit live and fakes nothing

I have another economy/tax question for the more knowledgeable:

When Republicans talk of saving the "rich" from any taxes and say they are the ones who create jobs, without making any distinction between income tax and corporate tax, is not any job creation spending BEFORE tax, not after tax?

So, if someone making $1,000,000 per year in taxable income decides to spend $200,000 on a new business before January 1st, he would only be taxed on $800,000 would he not, because this would immediately become a personal business expense?

No wonder Sarah Palin is taking her time to announce whether of not she is going to be a presidential candidate or not because she's going to be a grandmother again. Her son Track announced his marriage and news of his child's birth. If Daily Kos had not announced this story today or read the Gawker story or read People magazine we would never get to offer congratulations to the newly married future dad. Why didn't Sarah share the good news on her FB page or a Tweet at the very least? It's so unlike her.

re: #144 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

I've been in situations where you get these Pentecostal keyboardists who can only play in two frickin keys, Db and Gb, so everyone has to take what's actually written and transpose it because of them. Annoying.

Never been in that situation. That would annoy the hell out of me.

My favorite gigs nowadays are the ones where I have no control over what's being played. I play in a live karaoke band - 300 songs on the list, and I don't know what I'm playing until the person rom the audienc tells me.

And I play pedal steel on a semi-regular basis with a country swing band - and the band leader insists on not telling anyone what we're playing until we play it.

Those kind of gigs definitely keep me on my toes.

I have known some very good amateur guitarists who have shrugged off learning music theory and reading music because they think it inhibits their creativity. These are usually talented people who have a certain amount of god given talent. However, these people will almost never go pro. Even to be a real working musician (weddings, cuises, night clubs, etc) you have to be able to follow a Real Book (are those still around or am I dating myself?)

By the way -- you can now pop up the LGF Connect Twitter posting form at any time by typing Control-t. If you're not logged in you'll be given the option to do that session-only authorization thing I described earlier.

This collides with the "new tab" shortcut in chrome.

They're not as bad as they used to be. Gibson does a lot of chambering and weight relief on the newer ones.

No doubt. It is a trademark sound.

I have a few Gibsons that use the P-90 style pickups. They're the middle ground between a Strat and a Les Paul.

Their problem is that they're noisy. The Humbucking pickup was developed to duplicate the P-90 sound without 60 cycle hum coming through the amp - but I live with the noise because I love the tone.

Did you mention getting a V-Drum kit earlier (couple weeks ago?) sorry if that was someone else but I thought we might have talked about it. I don't do much electronically at all though I've messed around in old Absynth 2 and 3. My entire rig needs an update. The SY85 still holds things down but the effects are, as you can imagine, very 1992. And it's kind of a tank.

Ideally I'd keep that around as a controller and move to an FP series, speaking of tanks, for real piano feel. I know I'm getting up there because the more I type, the more the thought of setup and teardown just makes me tired lol.
