Do not think me gentle
because I speak in praise
of gentleness, or elegant
because I honor the grace
that keeps this world. I am
a man crude as any,
gross of speech, intolerant,
stubborn, angry, full
of fits and furies. That I
may have spoken well
at times, is not natural.
A wonder is what it is.

I looked at a Droid 3 today.

Looks a lot better than the 2, which is a fine little machine itself.

Probably great for production, too. One less thing to worry about; can sell boatloads of them because demand will be there for more devices, thus for longer.

Nice thought, but I think we're kinda locked in to this thing coming ashore somewhere on LI. Early forecasts had it making landfall in my town, but since yesterday landfall has been moved west.

Not that that's going to make a lot of difference. We're in for a lot of rain and wind, and there are tornado watches up now.

I may be in this thread until the sun comes up or my power goes down, whichever comes first.

Not doing much re: the storm per se

What we are doing is restorals for clients that usually put their signals on satellites from both Florida (QVC,, ION Networks,, Globecomm services which have satellite feeds going from the states to europe and South Africa) and broadcasters in New York (doing work for ABC, NBC and FOX right now)

The storm knocks out their ability to transmit cleanly to satellites, so we're contracted to take over for them in situations like this

I cannot sing at all, by the way. I can scream really loud, but not sing.

We have about 250 songs on the list. Audience members sign up, come up on stage and off we go.

It really is a lot of fun. A lot of those who get up can't really sing, but once they're on stage with us it doesn't matter.

OTOH, there are some people who get up and just amaze me with their talent. We had one guy last week who was a Wall St.-looking type. He meekly got up on stage and then rocked 'Welcome To The Jungle' to death. That happens a lot.

Breaking!

Another Norwegian suspect arrested. Translated from the Dutch Telegraaf Newspaper.

Oslo police arrested a 33-year old man on Friday, after police officers found multiple weapons, ammunition and explosives inside his house. Also found were two police uniforms. This was confirmed by a spokesman this Sunday.

The man allegedly threatened one or more persons. More information about that was not published. The man lives in or close to the city of Hönefoss.

The man was convicted in the nineties before for possession of weapons and the sale of them to right wing extremists and the possession of police uniforms. The man has said that his Nazi past is behind him.

Officially there has not been established a connection between him and the terrorist attack for which Anders Behring Breivik is in custody.

Instapundit is dreaming that the hurricane will destroy Obama.....

ROGER KIMBALL: More irenic thoughts, or Obama as Dukakis.

A friend with a sense of humor sent me this reassuring story: “Obama Takes Charge at Hurricane Center.” “Now you can sleep well tonight,” he said. Hardly that. I mean really: does he look like a man who has a clue about what to do? Ponder the official NOAA name plate emblazoned with “Barack Obama President of the United States.” Why does that seem ridiculous? After all, he isthe President of the United States. Maybe it’s because it put me in mind of that iconic image of Mike Dukakis in his tank. Anyway, if it failed to be reassuring, it did introduce a welcome moment of levity.

Funny how often people with no sense of humor manage to do that.

UPDATE: From Skip Press on Facebook: “Funny how Hurricane Irene was slowing down, then Obama took over the hurricane center and it sped up.” He’s got the magic touch!

Meanwhile, I note that at least Dukakis looked like he was having fun in the tank.

People should be glad that Irene ended up a tropical storm and did not devastate the East Coast as a Cat 1 or higher. They thwarted a bullet. However, historically this area has been walloped in the past. Some day in the future whether near or far the East Coast will be hit with a substantial hurricane resulting in the loss of many lives and widespread damage.

Kindness. I'm just glad this wasn't worse than it was. My parents have lost power in rural Connecticut and are concerned about how long they'll be without power, but no big trees have fallen over. The weeping willow has lost a few more branches.

I was in that house for Hurricane Gloria, and that blew down a lot of big trees. As a kid, it was tons of fun afterwards to explore those mini-caves and instant ponds, left by the cavity of the root system as the tree fell over.

Don't get me started on the media. The news media is in the business of selling fear. Fear creates viewership and generates revenue. Fear sells. Yesterday I was reading an article that quoted a geographer. I don't get my meteorology or climate information from a geography professor but either a meteorologist or a climatologist.

263 RadicalModerate  Sun, Aug 28, 2011 8:12:59am

The northeast coastal area got very lucky because of two things: First - the brief landfall in North Carolina took a lot of energy out of the storm - the dropping from a borderline cat 3 to a mid-level cat 1 is no minor change. Second, the cold front that moved into the area right as the hurricane made New Jersey/New York landfall lowered regional air temperatures as well as caused shear to the storm bands - thus causing loss of organization for the winds.

If those two events hadn't happened the way that they did, this could have been much worse for the area.

We've got this place in Half Moon Bay called the Flying Fish - used to be a beat up shack of a place...never ate there...apparently they had good fish tacos. Last night we went to their new location - fish tacos were actually quite good. And they have a full bar. What I liked about the place though was that they kept their menu simple. Fish tacos, grilled or fried fish & chips, and some fish burritos/wraps. Obviously, they want to stay with the formula that made them successful enough to move into a building with actual windows.

Yep. It was a rather strong tropical storm. It's supposed to suck. Yesterday I was telling my sister that one of the other worst aspects of the storm will be power outages. In some locations it may last for a couple of weeks depending on how swiftly they can get crews out to downed power lines and repairing flooded transformer vaults.

People need to remember though that hurricanes and tropical storms are part of the "lifes blood" of the Earth. Without these storms, even with the devastation it brings, life would not be as it is on this planet.

Recording: "We are aware of your outage. Due to the high volume of calls, an operator may not be available. Power is expected to be restored to your area between 8am and 2pm on Thursday. If power hasn't been restored by between 6pm and 10pm on Friday, please call back during normal business hours."

NYC MTA expecting lengthy recovery, no ETA on resumption of subway service.

It remains unlikely that the city's mass transit system will be back to full-speed for the Monday morning commute, officials said, although they said the damage might have been far worse if the agency had not taken the highly unusual action of preemptively shutting down the entire system.

Many of the low-lying train yards and bus depots expected to be affected by the storm are now underwater, officials said, including subway yards in Coney Island and Upper Manhattan. Subways and buses were removed from those yards on Saturday and stored elsewhere so they would not be damaged by water.

"The actions that we took were the right ones," said Jeremy Soffin, a spokesman for the authority. Had the trains and buses not been removed, "you'd have an enormous problem," he added.

The agency is waiting for high winds to die down before sending workers onto the subway system's elevated tracks to look for damage. And the 13 underwater subway tunnels, where officials expected some degree of flooding, have not been examined yet either, officials said.

The Metro-North Railroad, which serves the suburbs of New York and Connecticut, is reporting problems. The entire New Haven Line is currently without power due to electrical shutdowns in Connecticut. And the railroad's New Canaan branch has lost power because of a tree collapsing onto overhead electrical wires used to run the trains.

It is difficult to convey to normal, sane people who aren't guitar fetishists the abject depravity that stealing a vintage guitar represents.

If your friend finds the culprit, let me know. I may or may not have:
* an unused warehouse in an area where loud noises and bad smells aren't particularly noteworthy
* a dentist's chair
* 37 years of bottled-up anger
* a robust imagination

Right there with you. I take a very dim view of people who steal other people's gear.

He had a few Strats, but no Teles as far as I know. He had a lot of one-offs (NAMM guitars, prototypes) and vintage Japanese guitars (Ibanez Artists), as well as Les Paul Customs, Juniors, Standards.

Over $50K worth of stuff. I'm hoping the unique nature of a lot of the guitars will make them easier to track down.

This hurricane that is coming thorough the East Coast, for anyone who’s in the East Coast and has been listening to me say ‘Food storage!’ ‘Be prepared!’ ‘Be somebody that can help others,’ you’ve heard me say this for years. People have made fun of me. That’s fine, I don’t care. I’ve been telling you, ‘Don’t be in a panic situation.’ If you’ve waited, this hurricane is a blessing. It is a blessing. It is God reminding you — as was the earthquake last week — it’s God reminding you you’re not in control. Things can happen. Be prepared and be someone who can help others so when disaster strikes, God forbid, you’re not panicking.”

Just a fly-by post.

I saw this last night while changing channels on different coverage of the storm. A reporter gets covered in raw sewage sea foam.

Yuck!

MYFOXNY.COM - A local news reporter from Washington, D.C. ended up getting covered in what is probably the remnants of raw sewage as he delivered live hurricane reports from Ocean City, Md.

WTTG-TV reporter Tucker Barnes was providing live updates for stations around the country as a wall of what he described as sea foam poured over him.

Barnes was on the boardwalk as Hurricane Irene hit the coast of Maryland

He noted that he had immersed himself in organic material. That "organic material" was most likely the effects of raw sewage pouring into the water during the storm.

"It doesn't taste great," he said.

Some of FEMA's reputation as a bad bureaucracy that Ron Paul is generalizing about was created specifically by the heads of the Louisiana Field Office during the Katrina response:

FEMA: Toxic Bureaucracy (2009)

CBS News wanted to speak with Doug Whitmer or Jim Stark, his boss. Stark opened up this morning in Washington. He denied there was any intentional slow down of the recovery process.

Douglas Whitmer out as chief of staff at Louisiana's FEMA office

Whitmer's was the only immediate departure announced by Ward, who arrived in New Orleans on Friday with a "tiger team" from FEMA in Washington to assess the morale of the office after accusations of widespread harassment, discrimination and favoritism surfaced in news reports.

Part of their argument seems to be that the DoJ is enforcing "foreign laws," but the Lacey Act seems to cover it.

The Lacey Act provides that it is unlawful for any person to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, or purchase any fish or wildlife or plant taken, possessed, transported, or sold in violation of any law, treaty, or regulation of the United States or in violation of any Indian tribal law whether in interstate or foreign commerce.

re: #296 Obdicut

They'll say Obama only was concerned because it might hit New York, that FEMA is paying attention to liberal areas and not conservative ones, etc. etc.

You just don't understand!

Real America is God's Country! We are entitled to the biggest and best of everything FIRST!! Obama has benefitted from all these programs. So he would not understand, either! This is NOT FAIR!

re: #354 BigPapa

Billy Bob Neck is satire. He kills me every time. I get him on Facebook and he babbles with the hecklers, most of us play into the satire by responding 'al winger.'

Billy Bob's got me listed as a Foul Evil Sodomite. I would not have it any other way, either. Lol we used to have fun with the tcots a couple years ago.

Dumb bigots.

re: #325 HoosierHoops

Let me rephrase that.. Glad you are safe...
Here in Oklahoma we get tornadoes out of the blue or 80mph straight line winds with Hail the size of golf balls..
The highest wind speed ever recorded in history on the the face of the earth was right here.. And people are proud of it..
They are ate up with Weather here..:)

I try and tell people, that "wind sweeping down the plane" is no.joke.

Oh yeah and if you're ever there to visit around October or so, plan for a budget of about $50 for cheap, expendable umbrellas. Because having a nice $40 one snapped up in about a half second makes no sense.
