Circumstances of his death notwithstanding, the people of Libya have one more reason to find today better than yesterday. Khadafi wont be coming back in any form. And at least one of his sons was killed as well.
Some reports indicate that he was hit in a NATO airstrike on a convoy but others indicate that rebels had surrounded a compound and he was caught trying to escape via a culvert. The latter appears to be far more likely as the photos indicate.
He had claimed he would never be taken alive, and the photos indicate that he did attempt to put up a fight (having been shot/injured). His last moments were probably a realization that he was being captured by rebel forces and that he should have taken the despot golden parachute to exile option when proffered.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Security Council Approves ‘No-Fly Zone’ over Libya, Authorizing ‘All Necessary
Measures’ to Protect Civilians, by Vote of 10 in Favour with 5 Abstentions
Demanding an immediate ceasefire in Libya, including an end to the current attacks against civilians, which it said might constitute “crimes against humanity”, the Security Council this evening imposed a ban on all flights in the country’s airspace — a no-fly zone — and tightened sanctions on the Qadhafi regime and its supporters.
Adopting resolution 1973 (2011) by a vote of 10 in favour to none against, with 5 abstentions (Brazil, China, Germany, India, Russian Federation), the Council authorized Member States, acting nationally or through regional organizations or arrangements, to take all necessary measures to protect civilians under threat of attack in the country, including Benghazi, while excluding a foreign occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory — requesting them to immediately inform the Secretary-General of such measures.
...
The Council then adopted resolution 1973 (2011) by a vote of 10 in favour to none against, with 5 abstentions (Brazil, China, Germany, India, Russian Federation).

Letter from the President regarding the commencement of operations in Libya
TEXT OF A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT TO THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE SENATE
March 21, 2011
Dear Mr. Speaker: (Dear Mr. President:)
At approximately 3:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, on March 19, 2011, at my direction, U.S. military forces commenced operations to assist an international effort authorized by the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council and undertaken with the support of European allies and Arab partners, to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and address the threat posed to international peace and security by the crisis in Libya. As part of the multilateral response authorized under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973, U.S. military forces, under the command of Commander, U.S. Africa Command, began a series of strikes against air defense systems and military airfields for the purposes of preparing a no-fly zone. These strikes will be limited in their nature, duration, and scope. Their purpose is to support an international coalition as it takes all necessary measures to enforce the terms of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973. These limited U.S. actions will set the stage for further action by other coalition partners.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973 authorized Member States, under Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter, to take all necessary measures to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in Libya, including the establishment and enforcement of a "no-fly zone" in the airspace of Libya. United States military efforts are discrete and focused on employing unique U.S. military capabilities to set the conditions for our European allies and Arab partners to carry out the measures authorized by the U.N. Security Council Resolution.
Muammar Qadhafi was provided a very clear message that a cease-fire must be implemented immediately. The international community made clear that all attacks against civilians had to stop; Qadhafi had to stop his forces from advancing on Benghazi; pull them back from Ajdabiya, Misrata, and Zawiya; and establish water, electricity, and gas supplies to all areas. Finally, humanitarian assistance had to be allowed to reach the people of Libya.

Mitt Romney was the first candidate to respond to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's death Thursday, saying the world is a better place with the longtime leader gone.

Wingnuts hurt my brain:
Mississippi's Choice: Personhood and the Rights of Zygotes
Led by two baby-faced men in their young 30s, and with photogenic blond Kiessling as their "I survived abortion" spokeswoman, the Personhood movement is working day and night to declare all fertilized eggs — even the zygotes in IVF Petri dishes, or the ones conceived in an overnight fling and are about to eradicate with morning after birth control pill — as "persons," subject to the same civil rights (chiefly not to be murdered, but all other rights might theoretically apply) as born people.
The logistical, legal basis for the personhood movement is a sentence in Roe versus Wade, written by Supreme Court Justice Henry Blackmun in 1973: "The appellee and certain amici [pro-lifers] argue that the fetus is a 'person' within the language and meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment. In support of this, they outline at length and in detail the well-known facts of fetal development. If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant's case, of course, collapses, for the fetus' right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the Amendment."
Kiessling and her supporters have decided to drive a truck into that legal wording, and declare all zygotes "persons." And in a few weeks, on Nov. 8, Mississippians will find on the general election ballot a "Personhood Amendment" to amend the Mississippi Constitution to define the word "person" or "persons" to "include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the functional equivalent thereof." The amendment, proposition 26, was assured of a place on the ballot after the Mississippi Supreme Court rejected the ACLU's challenge to it in a 7-2 ruling in September, prompting Yes on 26 Executive Director Brad Prewitt to crow: "We need Mississippi's pro-life public officials, pastors, and patriots to stand up and be counted in the days ahead as we seek to become the first state in the nation to grant civil rights to the unborn."

Ain't no joke. 30-50% of fertilized eggs don't implant. Many that do implant get no further--a significant percentage of those will end in spontaneous miscarriage in the first trimester, many of them before the woman realizes she's pregnant. They're choosing the most tenuous and impractical possible definition, which, and this is no mistake, leaves the legal field open to harass and persecute women essentially at will.

They really, really don't want to do that. Because if that ballot initiative goes through, then you've just thrown open the door to all sorts of government control over the life of a pregnant woman. Smoking a cigarette, drinking a glass of champagne, even eating a Big Mac, could be construed as "child abuse" under such language and put otherwise innocent women into prison for 9 months or more.

One of the creepiest Qaddafi stories so far...
Dr. Krekshi’s fighters found war prisoners in shipping containers and drawers full of intelligence dossiers on students, not to mention a mysterious office suite near Colonel Qaddafi’s preferred lecture hall. Inside was a queen-size bed, a Jacuzzi and a gynecological examining table, part of what the dean calls evidence that the deposed leader, on campus visits, summoned female students and raped them.
...
He touched on the talk of campus: the strange bedroom suite. He said he had found DVDs of students being sexually assaulted there, corroborating student reports, but had destroyed them to protect victims’ privacy.Ms. Bargan felt bold enough to suggest he should have saved them as evidence. He said she would understand someday.
“Maybe I will be more mature then,” she said with a hint of sarcasm.
Ms. Bargan went to see for herself. The rooms were next to Green Hall, the auditorium where students were indoctrinated. People wandered through, as if at a museum.
There was the gynecological table, seemingly inexplicable; the dean suggested — without citing evidence — it was for abortions, or repairing hymens.

We would have to carry a Certificate of Infertility to smoke a cigarette, be served a drink, go skydiving, take an antidepressant, etc.
Even women who want to bear children might not be able to, because, if they need to get their diabetes or blood pressure under control first, and can't risk pregnancy until they do, they'll have to resort to sterilization to avoid the risk of death by pregnancy before they are ready.

But, the women must have done something to cause that 30-50% to spontaneously abort. As soon as she is sexually active a women must not smoke, drink or even have unpure thoughts--lest she harm her chances of conceiving and bearing a child. We must investigate every possible loss of fertiziled eggs, women's behavior must be put under a microscope --we have to get these numbers down to an acceptable level of zero.

Smoking a cigarette, drinking a glass of champagne, even eating a Big Mac, could be construed as "child abuse" under such language and put otherwise innocent women into prison for 9 months or more.
Of course, all women should be banned from drinking, smoking, and other specified activities because of the potential to harm a zygote.

Oh, I assure you, they really, really do want to do that, for that very reason.
The thread of their logic only goes so far. They want to end abortions and so see this "personhood" BS as the way to do that. But it also allows that bane of their existence, "Big Government," to start nosing into their lives. After all, if it is a "child" from the moment of conception, then we have to strictly regulate the lives of women to ensure that these "children" are not being abused. Pleading ignorance, such as being unaware that you're a couple hours pregnant, won't cut it.

Now Libya has to start rebuilding, recovering assets, punishing those who stole from the country, tortured or killed others, or those that simply profited from being close to Qadaffi. Jails and torture chambers from Qadaffi's era might be appropriate housing for some of these bastards.

I see it largely as vanity legislation--it gives them a wedge for assorted challenges to legal abortion--in fact, it makes legal abortion essentially impossible in the state--but it also allows them to feel extremely pure and virtuous. It also provides an infinite variety of opportunities for harassment and persecution, which will, in turn, up their sense of purity and virtue. They won't monitor everyone--they can't, they don't have the resources, and they won't want to bother. What they WILL do with this is what we've seen already--start an investigation of a woman who comes into the ER miscarrying, prosecute women who attempt suicide while pregnant, that sort of savory little witch-hunting behavior. Small, but devastating to a few lives, and chilling to others.
And meanwhile, BOY do the folks behind this get to feel good about themselves!

Another One Bites The Dust
Ooh, let's go
Steve Obama walks warily down the street
With the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet
Machine guns ready to go
Are you ready, hey, are you ready for this
Are you hangin' on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat - yeah
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone and another one gone
Another one bites the dust, eh
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
How do you think I'm going to get along
Without you when you're gone
You took me for everything that I had
And kicked me out on my own
Are you happy? Are you satisfied?
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Look out
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone and another one gone
Another one bites the dust, eh
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
Hey
Oh take it
Bites the dust - bite the dust hey
Hey
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust, ow
Another one bites the dust, hey hey
Another one bites the dust, heeey
Ooh show down
There are plenty of ways that you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can beat him
You can cheat him
You can treat him bad and leave him
When he's down, yeah
But I'm ready, yes I'm ready for you
I'm standing on my own two feet
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
Repeating to the sound of the beat
Oh yeah
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone and another one gone
Another one bites the dust, yeah
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
Shoot out
Hey, alright

re: #110 Conservative Moonbat
Is that a possibility? Sure. But AQ is more firmly entrenched in the failed states of Yemen and Somalia inside Africa along with Afghanistan and Pakistan in South Asia. Yemen and Somalia both have a long history of terrorist breeding grounds (including homebases for OBL, Awlaki, and others). There's a willing and capable talent pool there. Some with the ancien regime may attempt to link up with AQ, but I don't see that happening. I'm sure the US and NATO will monitor the situation to see if AQ attempts to take advantage of the situation. The political and tribal tensions there are different and are likely to keep AQ from gaining a foothold.
I am cautiously optimistic over the situation in Libya. At the same time, Tunisia is expected to hold elections this weekend, and a moderate Islamist party is expected to win. They've got to fight the perception that they'd impose Sharia, including women wearing the veil, and other misogynist positions, but the party claims they'd do no such thing. There's no doubt that the party has moderates and extremists, and there are concerns that it might turn to be more Islamist than they let on, but for Tunisians their top concern is whether the new government will do something to improve the economy.
It's the economy, stupid is the name of the political game now - can the new governments do anything to improve the sorry state of these economies? It's going to take a whole lot more than platitudes (or imposing Sharia, if that's their true intention). They've got to bring tangible results or else they might find themselves in Ben Ali's position - out on their butt.

I've read stories of maquiladoras where the girls are required to show management their used sanitary napkins every month, to prove they're not pregnant--because if they're pregnant they're out of a job. And they put up with this shit, because they're feeding their families on the crap wages they get.
I am not thrilled that Mississippi seems to think this is a fine way to treat its female citizens.
Never needed physical evidence to determine my female employees' menstrual state.

Sorry, I can't be happy about a defenseless old man being killed in the street.

Top 5 List of things Mumar Khadafi doesn't have to worry about anymore:
(5) Paying off the all girl bodyguards. Don't you know how tough it is to get all that Jeri Curl?
(4) Live free or die hard?
(3) Listening to Justin Bieber.
(2) The hassle of being the world's best-dressed dictator was tougher than you could ever imagine. Coming up with a new over-the-top outfit is hard to do.
(1) No need to worry about the Rapture Harold, I'm good.

Obama to speak on the death of Qaddafi.
Here's the text:
He's not merely dead, he's really most sincerely dead.
Gaddafi is an ex-dictator.

Possibly the last footage of Gadaffi being alive.
You've seen the screenshot of this clip before. Him laying down in a flatbed truck. What you didin't see is him getting out of the truck, walking.
Obviously that comes with a....

Well, I guess that settles the question of whether they took him alive.

Doesn't look much like he was shot in the head (IANA forensic scientist). And then he was walking in the video shown above, so he must not have been shot too badly in the legs, either. His neck looks like he's been strangled, or is that just old man wrinkles?

But you saw from the other footage that he suffered from a massive blood loss. The convoy was bombarded so shrapnel could have been fatal for him.

It is not a matter of "if", it is a matter of when. Chavez previous physician give Chavez less than 18 months to live. The diagnosis is not public but Chavez looks like inflated chit after 4 chemo sessions. Chavez could be very dangerous during this period like a corned wild animal.
Thanks anyway. I prefer corned beef on rye with mustard and a little sauerkraut.
