American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer: God Sent Hitchens to Hell Because He Loved Him

God loves you
Wingnuts • Views: 25,920

Here’s the politically-connected representative of the American “Family” Association again, Bryan Fischer, explaining that God loves Christopher Hitchens so much that He sent Hitchens to burn in hellfire and be tortured by malevolent demons, for all eternity.

I guess the term for that is “tough love.”

In that case (he goes to hell), Hitchens would say, "Move over, there's a new sheriff in town."

Let's assume he didn't repent? He believes that he did?

BTW, the idea of an eternal punishment in hell is, of course, incompatible with a moral, all-loving and omni-benevolent god. It's a devil, not a god that would allow such a thing to exist.

4 jaunte  Sat, Dec 17, 2011 11:52:32am

Torture fantasies rot the mind. Fischer is a good example of the long-term effects.

So if Hitchens went that way, Fischer will go the other?

9 The Questionable Timing of a Flea  Sat, Dec 17, 2011 12:08:57pm

It says a lot about a person when they twist their definition of "love" such that it justifies punitive cruelty and infliction of pain. Even more when they project it all onto their god-concept.

10 wrenchwench  Sat, Dec 17, 2011 12:10:17pm

Fischer is saying God would not be able to make Hitchens happy in heaven, that to allow him in there with all those believers would be cruel to him. Pretty weak interpretation of omnipotence, I think. And if there is a God, and Hitchens met him in person after he died, even he could become a believer, I would think. Although that's too late, from what little I know about Christian theology. When I was becoming a skeptic, I figured any God that I would want to spend eternity with would accept me just on the basis of my being a pretty good person. Now I figure it's most likely an indifferent Universe out there, which is better than being wherever Fischer is going to be.

Anyone talking about how they know that God did this or that creeps me out. Even when they're talking about something positive, but especially when they're talking about the harsh fates of others.

Hitchens would have laughed hysterically at this, were he alive. Since he is dead, he has no reaction at all and that would include not burning in Hell.

22 Gus  Sat, Dec 17, 2011 12:37:44pm

This says it all.

“That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”

We should probably ask Fischer and others of his ilk to prove it then.

[Complete silence would follow.]

Of course we know "their" answer and it would be something akin to having "faith" that Hitchens is indeed "burning in hell."

The fantasy continues.

That's why I find the Mormon eschatology more logical than most mainstream concepts. Most people don't go to the "hell" in it, the murderers do reside in something called "outer darkness", while the rest are sorted through three degrees of celestial glory.

The funny thing for me someone Hitchens could call a believer. (My religious views are close to Jefferson's) has that I've ben defending his legacy most among liberal friends who are atheists yet don't like Hitchens because of the war support. I opposed the war too but I won't hate Hitchens for supporting it any more than I respect Buchanan or Paul for opposing it.

The response of course is a bit of a cliche. Almost like he's been conditioned to make such a comment. The idea of course is absurd that someone would burn in such a human created environment of hell for all of eternity. Seems like it would be a rather harsh punishment for having an opinion and writing books. But there are others in the secular world who are claiming that Hitchens has "blood on his hands" which is itself a form of moral judgement from the living against the dead. Where were these very same people when bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, or Gaddafi died?

tough love

it's time the 'job creators' got some tough love

if we keep coddling them while they fail to create any jobs, we'll just be enabling an expensive welfare overclass

we would only be being merciful if we let them feel the consequences of their failure and took away the big tax breaks we gave them specifically to encourage them to create jobs

how else will they learn not to fail?

52 Romantic Heretic  Sat, Dec 17, 2011 1:05:24pm

What an utterly ignorant scumbag. Who is he to make God into a sadistic child abuser?

Hitchens wasn't against God or Heaven. He didn't believe in them. He was against religion (Not the same thing as God or Heaven) for the same reason I am. Religions often quickly stop being theisms and start being ideologies. Ideology is not about being good but about being right. Plus they become sources of wealth and power to the unscrupulous.

Mr. Fischer is a prime example of that.

53 Kronocide  Sat, Dec 17, 2011 1:07:38pm

I think this was all pretty much inevitable. The spontaneous - grass roots appeal of OWS only goes so far into the agenda of the movement. The organizers and leadership were always in control and there was very little chance of the movement becoming so large that they'd be replaced. The movement will continue in some form or another, just like OWS is a continuation of previous lefty protest movements. They'll be back and the core agenda and direction isn't going to change very much.

"If the scriptures mean anything......."

Hogwash, Fischer. The common vision of Hell as a place of eternal and limitless torment is a myth, a gruesome fairy tale invented to frighten people into accepting Pascal's wager. The scriptures cited to justify this invention are thin on the ground, out of context, and distinctly less specific than the common terror-tale. Even in Dante's time, when the hell-myth had already had several centuries of embellishment, it was not commonly seen as entailing unlimited pain for all the unrepentant. Remember the "virtuous pagans," who lived eternal lives of comfort in the highest level?
Fischer and other fire and brimstone fundamentalists are not above elaborating the scriptures themselves when it suits their never-ending quest for power and money.

I like the shag carpet and the track lighting.

We got the shag from Bachmann's last closed constituency office. Don't worry, we had the tears steam cleaned out.

Good move!

I sent the Saddleback guys who are Twitter stalking me now the following:

Hey, thanks for following me. So, who's up for hookers and blow? You guys can go to Rentboy if you want. No judgements.

I may ask them next if Rick is available to officiate a wedding for two friends of mine. Two of the nicest guys you're ever going to meet.

re: #87 aagcobb

Warren seems to realize his beliefs are incoherent and contradictory. Rather than reach the obvious conclusion that he's wrong, he relies on the old Christian crutch that us mere mortals simply aren't capable of understanding God's master plan.

debating fundamentalists can be interesting. they patiently 'explain' everything to you, since the church has special, inspired knowledge of all of the details of god's reasoning, feelings, and intentions, which they are happy to explain to you in detail since They Know The Truth

your own truth isn't important so shut up and listen

...until you start in with the difficult questions. then they suddenly don't know the answer to everything anymore and it's "we poor mortals aren't capable of understanding god's plan"

Yes, just like there Nader said there was no difference between Gore and Bush.

I'm pretty sure it was the Nader voters that led to Bush winning in 2000. Of course people are free to vote for whomever they please. But it's not rational policy when on considers the alternatives or consequences if one purports to be liberal by any stretch of the imagination. Just like in 2000 if every one of these alleged purists goes out and votes for Nader or Ron Paul that may very well lead to a Republican victory in a close election.

I don't know about that. Gore couldn't win TN. IIRC, he had won his home state that would have been enough.

Christ, even Mondale managed to win MN.

Everyone talks about that but in fairness to Gore, the state had trended right and he had trended left in 2000. That said, I don't blame Nader for Gore's defeat. I think Gore ran a terrible campaign.

My friend Christopher Hitchens has died. I loved & prayed for him constantly & grieve his loss. He knows the Truth now

announcer: "and now, a special comment on atheists and the afterlife from Jerry Falwall, currently burning in hell for eternity. Reverend Falwell, do you think there is any place in Heaven for militant atheists like Christopher Hitchens?"

falwell: "AAARGHHHGHGHGGHGAAARRRHHHAAARRRHHAAARRRHHHAAA!!!"

announcer: "and by the way, Reverend Falwell, now that you are burning in hell for all eternity (ooo, cool red hot pokers doods by thuh way) - do you have any second thoughts on the things you said while you were alive?"

falwell: "AAARGHHHGHGHGGHGAAARRRHHHAAARRRHHAAARRRHHHAAAHELPHELPHELPHELPHELPAAARRRHHHAAARRRHHHAAARRRHHH!!!"

Anyone remember former LGF user "Gordon"? Back when the blog was mostly right-leaning, Gordon was one of the few liberals that posted, with many of his posts rubbing the members the wrong way. He was often labeled as "nordog". I guess that's just some wacky LGF thing that hasn't changed that much over the years.

alt.atheism is still around isn't it? I haven't been there for years so I have no idea but I expected it to fold under the weight of pure hatred being injected.

I think it is and I think Google owns rights or something to that effect. I literally haven't been involved in those contentious debates for a good two decades. Still, I remember the arguments affectionately. Interesting ideas were born from that group: Knights of BAAWA (Bad Assed Atheist With Attitude - the thick skin one has to develop when arguing with fundamentalists), and the Invisible Pink Unicorn (originally an argument unto itself - always used when arguing for the existence of the fundamentalist deity).

What's the origin on spelling his name backwards?

I've seen it used as a convention in places where a poster or subject is being discussed and there are supporters who net search for that term and then show up and comment/troll.

Given the known fanatical support Ron Paul has I would expect that the backwards spelling convention came partially from that.

In that case (he goes to hell), Hitchens would say, "Move over, there's a new sheriff in town."

I must borrow, in regards to Christopher Hitchens, what Nanny Ogg says of Granny Weatherwax: "If he ain't gone to a better place, he'll be working on improving it."

re: #3 Sergey Romanov

Let's assume he didn't repent? He believes that he did?

BTW, the idea of an eternal punishment in hell is, of course, incompatible with a moral, all-loving and omni-benevolent god. It's a devil, not a god that would allow such a thing to exist.

As soon as Hitchens' illness became public knowledge, there were quite a few people who were REALLY hoping for a deathbed conversion.

Like Voltaire's.
