On the video - I like scenes with dark green woody areas. Certainly a break from the desert shrub surroundings in this part of the country.
Which takes me in the direction of a lament - I've come across several stumps of freshly cut trees lately. For some reason taking down trees seems to be in fashion around here. As if we have too many trees.

Lots of reasons for taking down trees
I had one whose roots were pushing up the street in front of my house. I had another that had some sort of disease and if I didn't cut it down it could have spread to other trees in my yard. Had yet another that was hit by lighting and what remained of the tree could have fallen onto others
I have, however, planted more trees on my property than I have cut down in the last decade

White Supremacist Is Held In Ordering Judge's Death
By JODI WILGOREN
Published: January 09, 2003
Glenn Greenwald, a lawyer for Mr. Hale, said the charges filed today might stem from a misinterpretation of a statement by his client on the Internet that ''we are in a state of war with Judge Lefkow.''
''They are probably trying to take things he said along the lines of political advocacy and turn it into a crime,'' Mr. Greenwald said. ''The F.B.I. may have interpreted this protected speech as a threat against a federal judge, but it's probably nothing more than some heated rhetoric.''

Hale was ultimately sent to prison for his misdeeds. Now, that does not in and of itself say something bad about Glen Greenwald, since defending a scumbag in court does not make you a scumbag. But it does provide a useful digging point.

Family of judge targeted by hate group murdered
March 1, 2005 -- The husband and mother of a federal judge who was targeted for assassination by World Church of the Creator (WCOTC) chieftain Matthew Hale were murdered inside her Chicago home, two years after white supremacists publicized her home address and photos of her family on the internet.
U.S. District Court Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow came home from work and discovered the bodies of her husband, Chicago attorney Michael F. Lefkow, 64, and her mother, 89-year-old Donna Grace Humphrey, around 6 p.m. Monday.

A parks spokesman said Barnes was an Iraq war veteran. Authorities recovered his vehicle, which had weapons and body armor inside, Troyer said.
Barnes was also a suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting of four people at a house party in Skway, police said.

For those that may not get it...
The dudes name is right there in Sergey's post. Any way, a few years back, before all the creationists flounced, there was a news story here some dead dude found in a hotel room, died from the ricin that he was making.
Early on in the discussion thread, someone linked a new news report with the dead suspects name. I can't remember it, nor even pronounce it. It was clearly nordic in origin.
So like a good 60 to 80 comments later there were still people cracking off about how they bet the dude has and islamic or middle eastern sounding name, and I was all like "FFS, RTFA!!!"

I've just encountered some amazing price increases at Amazon.
Lately I've been buying my protein and fiber supplements from there. The protein I usually buy Amazon has raised their prices by about 60% since last month! The same product is available by other vendors through Amazon, but even their prices have gone up about 10%.
It's now cheaper to buy locally.
Serious food price inflation? In part, yes. But I suspect the popularity may have driven the price increase too.

I wish I was in that position. Given that I would be demanding a pretty penny for those services. Say in the neighborhood of 100K/year. I'm open to suggestions. Otherwise, I was just thinking about how I used to loathe Arianna Huffington back when she was some kind of born-again wingnut married to her closeted gay Republican congressman/husband. I still think she's a bit of a fraud and ripped off a lot of her old contributors to the Huffington Post. Sold them out for what? Close to 300 million? Another windfall since the last time with her divorce settlement. That and knowing that Andrew Breitbart helped start HuffPo. It's all pretty weird.

Since there was no money (Gus hasn't been paid for this story), there logically should be no conspiracy. But he refused to let logic get between him and a scoop, and thus put his foot right into it.
Or did he? His conspiracy meme will likely spread faster than the truth. So the real question is: Will Politico issue a correction once they are advised of the facts, or will they try for an "OUTRAGEOUS OUTRAGE!!1" short-term traffic surge. I hope and expect that Politico will uphold its standards and do the former

Some years it just wasn't very good. I remember watching it on PBS when Pertwee was the Doctor. He and his successor were my two favorite actors for the part, but the current one is pretty good too.
Until the rebirth of the series in 2005 the writing was strongly geared towards the young. The new production greatly modernized the show - it's hard to compare to the older versions.

Four Attacks in Queens With Homemade Firebombs
A wave of arson attacks spread across eastern Queens on Sunday night, and the police said the firebombings were being investigated as bias crimes — with Muslims as the targets.
No one was hurt in the four attacks, in which homemade firebombs were apparently used. In three of the four attacks, the police said, Molotov cocktails were made with Starbucks bottles.
The first attack occurred just before 8 p.m. at a bodega at 179-40 Hillside Avenue.
Ten minutes later, another crude firebomb was thrown, this time at a private home at 146-62 107th Avenue, and the house caught fire.
Half an hour after that, an Islamic center at 89-89 Van Wyck Expressway was the target. The last attack occurred at a house at 88-20 170th Street, the police said...

Bachmann hides from OWS protestors
Things got a little crazier than usual yesterday at Michele Bachmann's campaign HQ in Iowa. A few dozen people associated with Occupy Iowa turned up to protest outside her offices, and, unwilling to face them, Bachmann did the political equivalent of hiding under the bed.
Because anything she doesn't like must automatically be the work of Barack Obama's socialist devil army, Bachmann gave her theory on where the protesters came from:
The people outside are President Obama's re-election advance team. That's what you're seeing outside. What they recognize is that I'm the greatest threat to Barack Obama's re-election and I intend to be.

And yes, we do have to 'spread the wealth around'. Or rather, when the wealth becomes more and more concentrated in a smaller and smaller segment of society, it is a gigantic problem for our nation. How to solve that is a highly debatable issue. That it's a problem really isn't, or, I've never seen anyone make any sort of coherent argument as to why it's not a problem.

The last attack occurred at a house at 88-20 170th Street, the police said.
The Islamic center, the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation, houses one of the most prominent Shiite mosques in New York. According to its Web site it offers funeral services, counseling and free SAT classes. It lists branches in several cities, including Montreal and Islamabad, Pakistan. Calls to the foundation were not returned Sunday night.
The firebomb, made with a glass Starbucks bottle, was thrown at the door of the center, possibly from a van as it drove it by, the police said. The door was blackened, but the building did not catch fire.
A similar weapon was found at the bodega, the site of the first attack, according to the police. The bomb might have been thrown from inside the store, because the counter sustained some damage, the police said.
It was the second attack, on 107th Avenue, police and fire officials said, that caused the most damage.
Shortly after 8 p.m., someone called 911, saying that a Molotov cocktail had been thrown at their home. The house caught fire, and it took more than 60 firefighters about 40 minutes to bring it under control.
In the fourth attack, two bottles were thrown at the house on 170th Street. A spokesman for the Fire Department said that the person who called 911 said they saw a vehicle drive by as the bottles were hurled toward their home. But the flames quickly fizzled.

re: #243 rwdflynavy
Actually, Obama put it very well, I think, for an off-the-cuff remark when he didn't have time to edit his text. Here is what he said:
"Well," said Obama, "here’s a way of thinking about it. How long have been a plumber?"
Wurzelbacher said 15 years.
Obama says, “Over the last 15 years, when you weren’t making 250, you would have been given a tax cut from me, so you’d actually have more money, which means you would have saved more, which means you would have gotten to the point where you could build your small business quicker than under the current tax code. So there are two ways of looking at it – I mean one way of looking at it is, now that you’ve become more successful through hard work – you don’t want to be taxed as much.”
“Exactly," Wurzelbacher said.
Obama continued, “But another way of looking at it is 95% of folks who are making less than 250, they may be working hard too, but they’re being taxed at a higher rate than they would be under mine. So what I’m doing is, put yourself back 10 years ago when you were only making whatever, 60 or 70. Under my tax plan you would be keeping more of your paycheck, you’d be paying lower taxes, which means you would have saved…Now look, nobody likes high taxes."
"No," said Wurzelbacher.
"Of course not," said Obama. "But what’s happened is that we end up – we’ve cut taxes a lot for folks like me who make a lot more than 250. We haven’t given a break to folks who make less, and as a consequence, the average wage and income for ordinary folks, the vast majority of Americans, has actually gone down over the last eight years. So all I want to do is – I’ve got a tax cut. The only thing that changes, is I’m gonna cut taxes a little bit more for the folks who are most in need and for the 5% of the folks who are doing very well – even though they’ve been working hard and I appreciate that – I just want to make sure they’re paying a little bit more in order to pay for those other tax cuts. Now, I respect the disagreement. I just want you to be clear – it’s not that I want to punish your success – I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you – that they’ve got a chance at success too.”

Person detained in L.A. arson attacks
[Link: www.cbsnews.com...]
LOS ANGELES - Twelve more suspected arson fires broke out early Monday in the Los Angeles area, and a "person of interest" was taken into custody for questioning in connection with the dozens of suspicious car fires that have hit city since last week.
The developments came a day after police distributed DVDs featuring footage of a man between 20 and 30 years old with a receding hairline and a shoulder-length ponytail. He was seen on grainy surveillance video Saturday after emerging on foot from inside an underground parking structure on Hollywood Boulevard where a car fire was reported.
Fire department spokesman Capt. Jaime Moore said it was too soon to say whether the "person of interest" was the man seen on the video footage. "It's still too early to say whether or not this person has any direct correlation to the fires," Moore said.
No arrests had been made.

From Jed York's Wiki
On October 11, 2010, with the 49ers off to a disappointing 0-5 start, Jed York wrote to ESPN's Adam Schefter that the 49ers would win their division and make the playoffs. This proclamation led ESPN Columnist David Fleming to refer to York as "kooky" and "goofy" and to note that York "backs up such bold declarations with a long list of qualifications starting with (1) his lifelong love of the 49ers, (2) his prestigious high school baseball career and (3) the fact that his godfather is Eddie DeBartolo."

I know it was last thread, but a two cent addition to your excellent remark.
In simple, increasing income/wealth disparity shrinks the money supply and thus feeds Keynes' paradox of thrift.
The wealthier you are, the more of your income gets put into "savings": property, capital investments, money accounts, etc. Give a thousand dollars to someone at the poverty level and it's all going to get spent within a couple of weeks. Give a thousand dollars to a millionaire and they're probably not going to purchase an extra thousand dollars of goods and services.
A secondary event is that the economic pool separates as income and wealth separate. That is instead of being one national economy with one gdp it becomes two such. More and more of the money that remains moving stays within two separate 'pools'. An indicator that is beginning to show up is when one segment (differentiated by wealth) has a strong and growing economy while the other segment suffers a recession or even a depression. A later indicator will be a dichotomous inflation. Goods that are peculiar to one class or the other inflate at rates relative to the conditions of that class. Goods that are mutually desirable tend to be influenced more by the wealthy's economic conditions.

Official: 4 Ohio fluid-injection wells cannot open in wake of quake
(CNN) -- State leaders have ordered that four fluid-injection wells in eastern Ohio will be "indefinitely" prohibited from opening in the aftermath of heightened seismic activity in the area, an official said.
Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director James Zehringer had announced on Friday that one such well -- which injects "fluid deep underground into porous rock formations, such as sandstone or limestone, or into or below the shallow soil layer," the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains -- was closed after a series of small earthquakes in and around Youngstown.
Then on Saturday, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck that released at least 40 times more energy than any of the previous 10 or more tremors that had rattled the region in 2011.
Andy Ware, deputy director of Ohio's natural resources department, told CNN on Sunday that Zehringer and Gov. John Kasich subsequently ordered that four nearby injection well projects will not open in the coming weeks, as had previously been planned. They 'll be inoperational until a determination is made in an investigation of a possible link between the earthquakes and the fluid-injection wells, he added.
"They will (not open) until we are satisfied that the process can be safely resumed," said Ware.

Who ends up with the thousand dollars?
Lots of other people who are likely to spend it quickly. Waitresses and pawn shop guys and taxi cab drivers, who likewise spend it quickly.
Money is not money if it's static. A hundred bucks sitting on a shelf does no good. Money is only money if it has velocity, if it's being spent and respent.

Yes, according to basic economic models, but money on the shelf, or in the bank, or under the bed does have a significant effect on people's behavior when it is called savings, and I think there is a spot for it in the models too.

re: #277 Fat Bastard Vegetarian
Who ends up with the thousand dollars?
Generally it tends to recirculate. There are several economic models for that. Plus there are some studies that try to track it (using sampled processes).
Here's a simplistic comparison. Assume two classes, P(oor) and R(ich). Assume P saves zero, and when he spends 100% goes to R. Assume R saves (S) 50%, 25% goes to P, 25% goes to R. We're giving $1,000 (available, we'll call this A) and what we want to measure is total money movement (M).
First version, R gets 1000. A becomes 500, 250 to R, 250 to P. M is 500.
Second iteration, A becomes 375. R sends 125 to S, 62.5 to R, 62.5 to P. P sends 250 to R. 375 is added to M which is now 875. Two iterations is enough.
Second version, P gets 1000. A remains 1000, and 1000 goes to R. M is now 1000.
Second iteration looks like the first iteration of the first version leaving us with an M of 1500.
Reality vs the model includes the facts that there are more than two groups, and that a portion of P's expenditures would go back to the P. These complexities do not change what the model demonstrates: give it to the poor and more money moves through the system over any given time segment.
The model incidentally shows that a mechanism to strip money from S and send it back to P increases money circulation.
Money in savings stagnates. It must move to generate a healthy economy. (balance point: too much movement is bad in its own way. However it's a far less common problem)

No, it doesn't. There are large permanent structures that some of it will wind up in-- say, a house-- but other than that, a cheese sandwich can become a tennis lesson can become a toy for your kids can become a guy doing some brushwork. It never has to stop.

Occupy Rose Parade Leader has Checkered Past
The Tournament of Roses Parade expects an addition this year, Occupy Rose Parade. The parade is a New Year's day tradition in Pasadena, California, starting in 1890. Every year, millions of people tune in to watch the parade, and hundreds of thousands flock to see the spectacle in person. According to the LA Times, security will be "beefed up" to accommodate the group, which promises not to disrupt the traditional parade.
The Occupy Rose Parade will have a post-parade float, which consists of "a giant octopus to represent Wall Street's stranglehold on the economy and the political system," according to organizer Peter Thottam, along with protesters carrying signs. A website dedicated to the event suggests messages for signs, as well as information about the "phases" of the protest.
40-year-old Thottam, a California attorney, is no stranger to activism or the law. A known 9/11 Truther, Thottam has also had bad luck in the investment business, as his family claims that he "burned through" $800,000 from their trust, according to the Pasadena Star News. He was arrested for shoplifting on at least three occasions and convicted in 2004. In a story called, "When Cops are Thugs," the Village Voice describes Thottam's arrest for shoplifting in 2003 in Mexico and placed in a prison cell with 13 others until a friend could bail him out. The 2004 conviction resulted in a temporary suspension of his California license. He has also been fired from at least two positions, according to the Daily Kos.
Thottam does not necessarily represent Occupy's 99%, as he has clearly benefited from his education and additionally, has a substantial amount of money to burn.

October 31, 2008
PETER L. THOTTAM [#206882], 37, of Los Angeles Thottam was convicted in 2004 of petty theft, a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
After practicing law for several years, Thottam enrolled in an MBA program at UC Irvine. He decided to transfer after a year and tried to return his textbooks, worth hundreds of dollars, to the Irvine bookstore for full price. When the bookstore refused, Thottam became upset and took two other books, worth $71 from the store.
At the time, he was under a great deal of stress because his mother had had one leg amputated for gangrene but refused to allow doctors to remove the other diseased leg. She died a few weeks later of septicemia, gangrene of the lower extremities. Thottam admitted taking the books and told police about the stress he was under.
He failed to appear in court for the criminal matter and a bench warrant was issued. He ultimately pleaded guilty to misdemeanor petty theft but did not report the conviction to the State Bar.
In mitigation, he cooperated with the bar’s investigation and was under extreme stress. He received some mitigation for doing thousands of hours of volunteer work in support of various community and public policy causes.

Occupy The Rose Parade!
Submitted by OLA Web Team on Mon, 12/26/2011 - 6:02pm
Description:
Dear Occupy Supporter:
In accordance with their long history of allowing protest, Rose Parade and Pasadena officials have authorized the Occupy the Rose Parade movement to march at the end of the parade, after all the floats have passed and the phalanx of police cars moves through, but while the crowd is still in place. The tea party won't be on hand and Occupy activists said this was a disappointment. Organizer Pete Thottam said "We consider them our brothers and sisters in arms in our fight to take back control of our country. Occupy activists are training at least 40 volunteers, outfitted in brightly colored vests, to talk to marchers and urge them to remain calm."
Continues.

Hackers plan space satellites to combat censorship
Computer hackers plan to take the internet beyond the reach of censors by putting their own communication satellites into orbit.
The scheme was outlined at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin.
The project's organisers said the Hackerspace Global Grid will also involve developing a grid of ground stations to track and communicate with the satellites.
Longer term they hope to help put an amateur astronaut on the moon.
Hackers still seeking volunteers to run the finance committee.

Some 800 Occupy Wall Street protesters began the new year by trying to retake Zuccotti Park last night, starting a massive clash with police in which one officer was stabbed in the hand with a pair of scissors.
A suspect was arrested in the 11:30 p.m. incident, according to a law enforcement source.
Hundreds in the crowd of occupiers then surrounded the ambulance as it tried to leave with the wounded officer, the source said.
The officer, who was not identified, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
Just one person stabbed the cop.
Just one group surrounded the ambulance to keep it from leaving.

re: #481 Sergey Romanov

If one expects any semblance of order, logic, rationality, etc. And most important at least a semblance to normalcy. Fringe movements of course can never speak for the masses. And it's once again proving that they do not speak for the 99% but a small segment of American society. Which is fine itself and they have their 1st Amendment right to do so as long as they obey common law. However, I never expect them to find any popular support. So yes, if you want any movement to take hold it's always a good idea to take responsibility for the crazies -- typically by driving the bus over them which is a common practice in politics.

i don't expect anything good from the decaying remnants of the ows corpse, of course, so throwing select crazies under the bus is not really an option at this point - the ows is mostly chaff now. of course, this is now, and that was then.
i'm sure when you were a supporter, it was a legitimate support of a more or less legitimate movement. and when there were crazies, they weren't representative of the whole. arguing otherwise is possible, of course, but then all those who supported ows and don't now should take their share of the blame.

I'm no economist, but I'm sure a certain level of savings is very important, otherwise one is living day to day, so to speak, and that is very unstable.
Sorry to be so late getting back to this, but this is Keynes' paradox of thrift.
Savings is good for individuals. Savings is not good for the society in which the individual operates - the economy.
