Breaking: Four GOP Candidates Won’t Get on Virginia Ballot, Judge Rules

Incompetence on an unprecedented scale
Politics • Views: 22,870

Ballot box via ShutterstockAstounding. Despite their huge campaign staffs and multi-million dollar budgets, four of the GOP candidates for President of the US have failed to get on the ballot in Virginia.

The hilarious irony in this is that it may be Republican-sponsored new regulations for checking signatures on petitions that caused these candidates to be excluded.

A federal judge has ruled against four GOP presidential candidates seeking a spot on Virginia’s March 6 primary ballot: Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman.

Hah!

Gingrich lives in Virginia. A major candidate failing to win one's own state of residence is one thing, failing to even qualify after months and months of signature gathering is just what is this I don't even?

4 Lidane  Fri, Jan 13, 2012 1:21:21pm

So it's going to be Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in VA?

That will be hilarious to watch.

5 wrenchwench  Fri, Jan 13, 2012 1:22:15pm

To the write-in campaign!!

Oh, wait.

Immediately after his petition was rejected by the Virginia GOP, Gingrich said he would launch a write-in campaign. It was later determined that Virginia specifically prohibits write-in candidates in primary elections.

Better yet, his argument for why he didn't make the ballot? A person working for his campaign to gather signatures provided just enough false ones to keep him below the necessary threshold.

No word yet if the person was a former ACORN employee.//

Gingrich lives in Virginia.

Like many lobbyists and DC insiders.

Oh, how the right wing likes to dump on the (dominantly black) District of Columbia... while they remain smug in their (mostly white neighborhood) northern Virginia faux-mansions.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch. They all knew the requirements of Virginia law, and when they saw that they couldn't comply with the petition requirements, Newt and Perry sought to sue. Joined by Huntsman and Santorum (who would have bowed out but for the NH showing, which was anything but inspiring).

Each state has its own petition requirements to get on the statewide ballot, and you would think that the campaign staff in each state would know what's required.

That tells you all you need to know about all the campaigns other than Paul and Romney (who are on all 50 state ballots). The rest never really had a chance, and that includes Perry who had the biggest warchest other than Romney at the outset.

It really is a clown circus.

That they couldn't manage to get the 400 signatures from each of the districts also tells you plenty about the ground game for those candidates; it was nonexistent and all their talk of support is just that - talk. They simply don't have the ability to get it done and it further speaks to their inability to manage their own campaigns and a fundamental part of the campaign - getting on the ballot.

Oh, and by the by.... how's that helping of states' rights going down in the Perry and Gingrich camps? Not too well I'm sure. How long before they're bleating that there should be uniform election laws across the country?

19 Charles Johnson  Fri, Jan 13, 2012 1:42:56pm
20 lawhawk  Fri, Jan 13, 2012 1:43:29pm

Addendum:
Huntsman and Santorum probably didn't think they'd be sticking around to last through Virginia, so this was an oversight, but now that Romney's supposedly been exposed as being weak, they thought they might be able to sue to get on the ballot. They piggybacked onto the suits by Perry and Newt.

Newt and Perry don't have that excuse - and Newt lives in Virginia and should have known what the requirements are in his own backyard.

The GOP never ceases to find new ways to fuck themselves. Speaking of which...you know that whole Keystone XL pipeline they wanted to "force" Obama into a sixty day decision on? Looks like that pipeline leads straight up the Republican Party's collective sphincter too...

A bill intended to force the Obama administration to make a quick decision on the controversial Keystone XL pipeline is causing confusion and could even slow the pipeline review.

When President Obama signed legislation to extend the payroll tax cut on Dec. 23, he also enacted an amendment, introduced by GOP members of Congress, requiring him to approve or deny the pipeline project within 60 days, or by Feb. 21.

But Nebraska's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), which is trying to reroute the pipeline around Nebraska's sensitive Sandhills, said it will take at least six months to choose and approve the new route.

A sane person will tell you that forcing Obama's hand in this manner means they shouldn't be surprised when he gives the pipeline the axe. But the Republicans aren't sane people, so look for them to scream bloody murder about he should have given approval because it was going to be rerouted anyway.

I'm wondering if Paul will take this opportunity to reiterate his call on the other candidates to drop out and throw their support (and supporters) behind him in the hopes of offering the only "authentic" alternative.

I lived in northern Virginia for 10 years from 2000-2010, and I got to see it as (at least that area) became progressively more blue.

But trust me, the entire bottom two-thirds of that state is Hooterville. In a three person race, Bachman could have gotten 25% of the vote and claimed a moral victory.

That doesn't mean she's any less sailing out there in Neptune's orbit, of course -- just that I think she could have found an awfully sympathetic audience in big chunks of that state.

Ben Stein Suit Says Kyocera Unit Canceled Ads Because of His Climate Views

Actor Ben Stein sued a U.S. unit of Kyocera Corp. (6971), alleging a $300,000 agreement for him to appear in printer commercials and to give a speech at a company event was withdrawn because of his views on global warming.

Stein, a movie actor, television personality and economist known for his role in the 1986 hit movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” said in a complaint filed yesterday in state court in Los Angeles that Kyocera Mita America Inc. backed out of a contract because of what the company called his “official position on various policy issues” and statements “widely attributed to him.”
---
Stein said he told Kyocera “he was by no means certain that global warming was man-made” and “As a matter of religious belief, he believed that God, and not man, controlled the weather.”

Thanks for those child killing tornadoes then, I guess. Anyway, it's not really clear in the article whether or not there was a finalized contract. It seems that there were some details still in negotiation. But that shouldn't stop Ben from suing.

It's also not clear in the article whether Stein held his breath, stamped his little feet, or cried.
