GOP Clown Car Arrives in Florida for Fifth Debate This Month

Still there’ll be more
Politics • Views: 23,533

Watch out, here comes the GOP Clown Car again, disgorging its endless cargo of makeup-laden performers for another fantabulous debate about nothing of consequence.

In the Big Top, the Romney harlequin has no choice but to attack the Gingrich jester like a mad (but hilarious!) dog tonight; you can look forward to squirting boutonnieres, joy buzzers, and whoopee cushions galore as Ron “Zany” Paul and Rick “Madcap” Santorum mug wildly for the crowd on the sidelines. Come one, come all.

Issues you won’t hear any questions about: science, climate change, evolution, education, and Newt Gingrich’s sleazy personal life (the media learned their lesson in that last debate).

At this point it's really just a crazy bicycle. Not enough clowns for a full car.

Let's start up the GOP theme song:

It's a four-person pedal boat down the Sea of Fail. The clown car got left at the docks a while ago.

"Responsibility," my ass. You got ran out of town on a rail.

14 Lidane  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:06:24pm

It's not a GOP debate without the proper soundtrack:

15 freetoken  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:06:27pm

"influence peddler"

Heh, some ... fire??

16 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:06:52pm

Romney breaks out the "influence peddler" line. Bashes Gingrich for believing in climate change.

17 Targetpractice  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:07:10pm

Remember when Obama putting up a site to tackle misinformation was laughed at by the wingnuts?

18 pinkbunny  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:08:00pm

This won't be a real debate unless there are couple moments of "OH NO HE DIDN'T"

19 justaminute  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:08:10pm

Gingrich's forced resignation from office is "trivial politics."

20 Wozza Matter?  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:08:24pm

I missed the part of history where Gingrich *didn't* resign in disgrace, well maybe he didn't feel he was disgraced, but that's not quite the point..

My own take on a theme song for the modern day GOP...

22 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:08:59pm

30 Wozza Matter?  Mon, Jan 23, 2012 6:11:23pm

HoosierHoops, I cannot recommend getting a good CPA highly enough. Lawyers are great for figuring law, but they're not tax specialists. If you're dad's stuff is half as complicated as I recall you talking about (land leases, multiple properties, possibly a pile of stocks/bonds divided among multiple parties...) your lawyer may very well be outgunned. Best quote from their analysis:

"If Mr. Romney wants a truly stark example of diminished military capability, he should compare today’s horse cavalry to that in 1917, or even 1941 when there were still 15 active horse-cavalry regiments in the Army. Today there has been total disarmament of horse cavalry,’ he might say, ‘leaving our nation defenseless in this regard.’ His chosen comparisons are almost as absurd."

Even if you had enough, you always need to build be building more at some nonzero rate. Naval shipbuilding is an industry that requires a certain minimum cash influx to remain worthwhile to the private companies that ply the trade. That capability is functionally impossible to rebuild once it's gone.

Same reason we like to buy military aircraft approximately alternately between Boeing and Lockheed-Martin.

No, we need more because China a Russia are building more. If another nation is building more subs of better quality than before while you do not improve your overall force power, then you are getting weaker.

And as erik_t just pointed out, we'll always building subs, at least at a low rate. Not even Carter stopped submarine construction, because it's something that you will lose it if you shut it down.

Had he shortened the number of rounds to 45, I'm sure that fewer than 13 million people would be out of work. There is a well known correlation between the number of golf rounds the POTUS plays and the number of American unemployed.

There is no way jobs going to China, India, Indonesia and Taiwan has anything to do with it, and the collapse of the monetary system because of poor regulations and unfettered greed is just coincidence.

Because it's about a 1/3-active cycle (workup, deployment, refit), there's one carrier in heavy-effort nuclear refueling, and we have three regions of traditional coverage (Atlantic/Med, East Pacific, Indian Ocean/Gulf). And as previously mentioned, if you build them too slowly, you lose the tradesmen who know how to actually do it (ever try to weld a submarine pressure hull?) and you will never really be able to do it right again.

Honestly, people, these things aren't hard to find.

No offense intended, but that sounds like the answer someone would give in a committee hearing somewhere, while pork-larding congressmen nod their heads sagely. It's like the oil industry's justifications for why they need to get tax breaks in order to drill for oil: "Oh, well, drilling for oil is a technical enterprise, and if you don't give oil companies tax breaks for research and development, Exxon Mobil will stop working to make 40 billion dollars in profit a year because having to pay taxes will prevent them from being able to get out of bed in the morning." The defense industry is a trillion dollar-a-year carnival in this country. I would be willing to bet you that the next time a multi-billion dollar submarine contract comes up for bid, ACME Inc. will somehow be able to find a guy somewhere who knows how to properly do spot welds on a submarine. :-)

Okay, you completely ignored the first reason, so I'll assume you're only talking about the loss of vital industrial skills.

No, you won't find some guy somewhere who can do proper multi-inch-thick man-rated welds of high-tensile steel. That capability exists in submarine production and nowhere else. I love that you'll casually throw a smiley face on the end, but that production capability cannot be reproduced without many years of an entire industry learning on the job, so to speak.

We can have reasonable and rational discussions about whether or not the US Navy needs $CAPABILITY, but it's factually incorrect to suggest that construction holidays cannot have a severely deleterious effect on the relevant industrial base.

Wow that room emptied fast after the debate. Perhaps everyone is off enjoying a good projectile vomit.

Romney breaks out the "influence peddler" line. Bashes Gingrich for believing in climate change.

Newt is a historian in only a marginal and formal sense. Yeah, he has a PhD in history. But peer-reviewed articles has he written? What historical studies? It could be said that he was a historian once, but he no longer is one.
