Not so much about NZ, but rather... Zombies!
After gory incidents, online 'zombie' talk grows
First came Miami: the case of a naked man eating most of another man's face. Then Maryland, a college student telling police he killed a man, then ate his heart and part of his brain.
It was different in New Jersey, where a man stabbed himself 50 times and threw bits of his own intestines at police. They pepper-sprayed him, but he was not easily subdued.

Jesus Tradition in the Acts of the Apostles
In this one I basically agree with Doherty that Ehrman has played fast and loose with Acts as history. IMO it is really hard to accept Acts as having independent pieces of historical evidence, since there are many difficult questions about the book when one starts to pick it apart critically.

Baltimore Authorities Jail Man for Two Months for Video Recording Drunken Brawl
[Link: www.pixiq.com...]
Just when we thought we’ve seen the worst from the Baltimore Police Department, we are now learning they charged a man with attempted murder for doing nothing more than video recording a fight last year.
Jason Fyk, owner of WTF Magazine, ended up incarcerated for 50 days over the charge because a judge denied him bail, even though his video clearly shows he never came close to the purported victim.
In fact, the video shows the purported victim, Brandi Shipley, was actually the aggressor in the altercation, which took place in a parking garage on January 21, 2011.
Shipley also told police that Fyk never attacked her during the fight in which she exchanged punches with a couple of other men who were accompanying Fyk that night, including Steve Pullman of the motorcycle stunt team Adrenaline Crew, whom he was hoping to interview that night for his online magazine.
....
But Goodman went as far as to launch a blog called Fyk the Prick where he continued the threats as you can see in the screenshots contained in this PDF, including a statement Goodman says, "I'm from your government. I'm here to fuck you.".

One bible verse alone, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" (Exodus 22:18) is responsible for the death of tens of thousands, if not millions, of women. Do women and those who care about them need further evidence of the great harm of Christianity, predicated as it has been on these and similar teachings about women?
Church writer Tertullian said "each of you women is an Eve . . . You are the gate of Hell, you are the temptress of the forbidden tree; you are the first deserter of the divine law."
Martin Luther decreed: "If a woman grows weary and at last dies from childbearing, it matters not. Let her die from bearing, she is there to do it."
Such teachings prompted 19th-century feminist Elizabeth Cady Stanton to write: "The Bible and the Church have been the greatest stumbling blocks in the way of woman's emancipation."

It is a matter of viewing the scriptures through the eyes of the people who wrote them: primitive, superstitious nomadic goat herders who had no clue that bacteria cause disease and thought that demonic possession was responsible for mental illness.
Only someone at that mental level can accept the Scriptures as literal.
There is enough good stuff in the Scriptures, it takes only a small amount of God- (or nature-) given wisdom to pick it out and make it part of your life.
I was also badly damaged by a Catholic upbringing. It took a while, but I finally ran into some Christians who made sense to me. Not enough to convert me or anything, but to make me understand that religion does not have to be backward, stupid or superstitions.

Authorities in China have blocked internet access to terms such as "six four", "23", "candle" and "never forget", broadening extensive efforts to silence online chatter about the anniversary.
The effect of censorship appeared on Sina Weibo, the most popular of China's Twitter-like microblogging platforms, where users encountered a message that said the banned search results could not be displayed "due to relevant laws, regulations and policies".
Microbloggers decried the overzealous rash of censorship, complaining that their posts had been "harmonised" - a euphemism for censorship - within minutes.
Censors also prevented microbloggers from changing their display photos in an apparent attempt to prevent them from posting any photo commemorating the anniversary.

There is the quote of the old Rabbi who, when asked to explain the Scriptures, said: "Love thy neighbor, the rest is just elaboration."
But the current emphasis on literalism (and for some reason insisting that the King James translation of the Bible is divinely inspired and also infallible) has been a dangerous trend in Christinanity and is going to move us backwards if we let it continue.
I remember when someone asked GW Bush if he favored posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings. He said he was in favor of it. SOme smart-ass journalist (one who probably had a few semesters of comparative theology under his belt) asked "Which translation?"
To which Bush replied, "The standard one." He did not elaborate on it, but I am sure he meant the KJ version.

The other problem the literalists have is simply understanding what a "testament" is: a statement of faith. These people believe in God/Jesus, etc. because...
A Testament is not a histroy, although it contains historical references, it is certainly not a history, nor is it a science textbook, and although it can serve as the basis for a personal moral code, it is not a code of laws.
A lot of fundamentalists are terribly confused on these points.

I don't think they're confused. They're more or less internally consistent (although they also pick and choose sometimes). That's why they're fundies in the first place. If it's a word of god, and god does not lie, then what the word of god says is literally true, thus while the Bible is not, strictly speaking, "about" history or science, whatever claims about history or science it contains must be correct. Hence 6000 years, etc. It's logical.
Again, I would prefer if there were less fundies, but the liberal interpretation of the Bible, while socially preferable, doesn't make much sense to me.

Which still raises the question of "which one," Exodus or Deuteronomy?
As you said, he didn't answer.

Morning Lizards.
Not-so-good news on the Feline Overlord. He quit eating on Saturday, and basically went into a sleep, drink water, pee, sleep again cycle. Holding his right eye shut, it was oozing goop, and was generally acting uncomfortable. Generally lethargic behavior in general.
I gave him some pain reliever gel on Saturday night so he could sleep comfortably, and that appeared to help. Sunday was more of the same.
So I made a vet appointment for him first thing this morning and took him in. Appears that he developed a corneal ulcer in the right eye that has been bothering him - which I can attest is quite painful and irritating from personal experience. He's also dehydrated and a bit blocked up.
So he's staying at the cat hospital for at least part of the day. IV to get him rehydrated, some ointment for the eye, a bit of pain reliever... and also an enema (or two) to get his colon flushed out. He'll stay on the eye ointment and pain reliever* for a while once he gets home.
* - Fun stuff. It's a topical gel to put on the gums for absorption. Same drug they use nowadays instead of methadone for weaning junkies off of heroin; a pseudo-opiate of some kind. Applied to cat in very small doses.
And the cat hospital staff where also happy to get a donation of a baggie of freshly cut catnip leaves for the resident office cat (who put in an appearance) and whatever other patients are there.

Same vet who saw him when he had the blood pressure spike and the retinal bleeding. Cat was due to go in and have his blood pressure checked this week pertaining to that in any case. (And his blood pressure was good, so the medication dose for that is working well.)
The vet was actually pleased that I'd stopped his eye drops this weekend once he indicated pain in that eye - since that would have irritated the ulcer more. And that I'd given him a dose of pain reliever as well since that was what she would have recommended. I used to guessing wrong about these things and sometimes making things worse.

Here is the story:
Rabid bear attacks in Albemarle; shot dead by victim
An attack by a rabid bear was ended by an Albemarle County farm worker’s point-blank shotgun blast, fired from the roof of a Gator utility vehicle, police said.
The bear killed Tuesday is the first-ever recorded case of a rabid bear in Virginia and only the second case on the East Coast that state officials are aware of, said Jaime Sajecki, bear project leader with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
“It’s almost unheard of,” she said.
Police believe the bear was drawn by the movement of two men, who were using the vehicle to move stones on a large farm northeast of Rockfish Gap, said county police Sgt. Darrell Byers.
The roughly 120-pound female bear first attacked the vehicle itself, biting one of the tires, before pursuing the men, Byers said.
One of the men climbed into the bed of the Gator, then onto its roof, taking a shotgun loaded with birdshot with him, Byers said.
The other man left the cab, but when the vehicle started to roll downhill, he leaned back into the cab to set the parking brake, according to Byers.
The bear had come into the cab and was climbing into the bed when the man atop the Gator put his shotgun to her head and pulled the trigger, Byers said.
No one was injured in the attack or directly exposed to the rabies virus, Byers said.
The bear was decapitated, and its head sent to a state lab, where it tested positive for rabies, according to police.

Israel Deploys Nuclear Weapons on German-Built Submarines
Germany is helping Israel to develop its military nuclear capabilities, SPIEGEL has learned. According to extensive research carried out by the magazine, Israel is equipping submarines that were built in the northern German city of Kiel and largely paid for by the German government with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles. The missiles can be launched using a previously secret hydraulic ejection system. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak told SPIEGEL that Germans should be "proud" that they have secured the existence of the state of Israel "for many years."
In the past, the German government has always stuck to the position that it is unaware of nuclear weapons being deployed on the vessels. Now, however, former high-ranking officials from the German Defense Ministry, including former State Secretary Lothar Rühl and former chief of the planning staff Hans Rühle, have told SPIEGEL that they had always assumed that Israel would deploy nuclear weapons on the submarines. Rühl had even discussed the issue with the military in Tel Aviv.
Israel has a policy of not commenting officially on its nuclear weapons program. Documents from the archives of the German Foreign Ministry make it clear, however, that the German government has known about the program since 1961. The last discussion for which there is evidence took place in 1977, when then-Chancellor Helmut Schmidt spoke to then-Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan about the issue.

I am glad that I am nowhere near the UK at this time. Cannot tolerate anyting to do with royalty, although I would up attending Princess Diana's funeral.
By chance, mostly; we were driving back from Scotland to Dover to catch the ferry and basically, the whole countgry was closed so we said to heck with it, let's go watch the parade.

Once again, the Catholic Church handles the really big scandals
Vatican criticizes US nun's book on sexuality
The Farley critique, signed by the American head of the congregation, Cardinal William Levada, comes amid the Vatican's recent crackdown on the largest umbrella group of American sisters. The Vatican last month essentially imposed martial law on the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, accusing it of undermining church teaching and imposing certain "radical feminist themes" that were incompatible with Catholicism.
It ordered a full-scale overhaul of the group and appointed three bishops to carry it out.
The crackdown on Farley, a top American theologian, will likely fuel greater resentment at Rome among more liberal-minded American sisters.
The Vatican examination of the book began in 2010 and involved seeking Farley's responses to its concerns. After her replies failed to satisfy the Congregation, it moved to a full-fledged "examination in cases of urgency" that concluded Dec. 14.
...
In her statement, Farley said she had aimed to propose a framework for sexual ethics that "uses a criteria of justice" in evaluating sexual relations. She acknowledged that her responses to certain issues do depart from traditional doctrine, but said they nonetheless were coherent in theological and moral traditions.
"The fact that Christians (and others) have achieved new knowledge and deeper understanding of human embodiment and sexuality seems to require that we at least examine the possibility of development in sexual ethics," she wrote.

Pakistan condemns U.S. drone strikes
ISLAMABAD, June 4 (Reuters) - Pakistan on Monday strongly condemned a jump in U.S. drone strikes on its territory, using language that could increase tension between strategic allies already in dispute over military supply routes for NATO that Pakistan has closed.
Three drone strikes in as many days on suspected militants have killed 27 people, Pakistani intelligence officials say.
The foreign ministry called the attacks "illegal" and said they violated the South Asian country's sovereignty.
...The Pakistan government says the CIA drone campaign fuels anti-American sentiment in the country, and is counterproductive because of the collateral damage - civilian deaths - it causes.
The US should send them a letter with "FO" in the title. It's obvious the damn Pakistanis aren't serious about their terrorism problem. We have to do what they should be doing...killing terrorists.

Btw there are nuances of humour in the whole England/Scotland thing (as far s the vast majority of people are concerned) that non-UK folks might not always be aware of - for example this is one of our favourite stand up routines, from English comedian Stuart Lee, on the subject of Braveheart:

I have a hard time understanding anything to do with royalty. Can't stand it either.
Royalty made more sense back in the days where ritual and ceremony (and awesome costuming) reinforced the basic premise the some people are fundamentally better and should control you. Cross culturally and across time, being a ruler involves a lot of performance of being other and better than your subjects. And there's always been a tension about whether that inherent authority is an actual thing or a complex social counterfeit.
It's actually pretty radical that in the past four hundred years humanity has tipped over the concept of inviolable hierarchies of spiritual, intellectual, and moral worth.
Addendum: which is not to say that ritual and social counterfeit have dried up. The techniques are still there, as are the audience longing to be gulled.

The US should send them a letter with "FO" in the title. It's obvious the damn Pakistanis aren't serious about their terrorism problem. We have to do what they should be doing...killing terrorists.
And one wonders if the diplomacy behind the scenes includes a clause saying that the Pakistan govt will bitch about the strikes in public on occasion since it helps keep the lid on. While privately approving in the higher circles since the US is doing their dirty work for them in helping clean out the radicals that they helped create and sponsor.
