WaPo: The Life Cycle of a Right Wing Fake Outrage

PJ Media helps spread a ridiculous conspiracy theory
Politics • Views: 24,795

Congratulations to PJ Media for unlocking a new achievement — being officially noticed by the Washington Post as one of the originators of a crazed anti-Obama conspiracy theory: Reining in the Rumors About EPA ‘Drones’.

It was a blood-boiler of a story, a menacing tale of government gone too far: The Environmental Protection Agency was spying on Midwestern farmers with the same aerial “drones” used to kill terrorists overseas.

This month, the idea has been repeated in TV segments, on multiple blogs and by at least four congressmen. The only trouble is, it isn’t true.

It was never true. The EPA isn’t using drone aircraft — in the Midwest or anywhere else.

The hubbub over nonexistent drones provides a look at something hard to capture in American politics: the vibrant, almost viral, life cycle of a falsehood. This one seems to have been born less than three weeks ago, in tweets and blog posts that twisted the details of a real news story about EPA inspectors flying in small planes. …

First a couple of Twitter users got it wrong. Then, at 2:51 p.m. June 1, the Web site pjmedia.com posted a blog item with the title, “EPA Using Spy Drones to Fly Over Midwestern Farms.” It provided a link to a http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/05/30/hill-lawmakers-from-nebraska-question-epa-aerial-livestock-surveillance/ on the Fox News Web site — which discussed the lawmakers’ letter but didn’t actually mention drones.

That same afternoon, the falsehood spread to television. On a Fox News Channel “ensemble opinion show” called “The Five,” Fox contributor Bob Beckel said,“They are drones, they are flying overhead.”

When I was a kid these kind of idiotic conspiracy stories were hid in newsletters and weird, small run magazines.

Then, late night radio (the most successful of which was Art Bell, but there were others) became the home of loony ideas.

Then... then there came the internet, and Fox News, and finally all the idiocy found a home base, and the fields of online blogs and Youtube videos flourished with conspiracies.

OF COURSE ITS THE EPA DRONES, MAN!

Airplanes are used to do all kinds of aerial mapping, over farms even, for all kinds of very good and beneficial reasons and have been doing so since airplanes were invented. Satellites do this kind of thing to, just from higher up, and mostly they are not manned either (although they probably can't detect pot farms as easily).

I don't get the problem with cheaper to operate drones. What is wrong with these conspiracy loons, do they all belong to the NRA?

Let me take this opportunity to rant:

If one looks at the comments over at the DailyCaller link in the article it becomes evident immediately that the DailyCaller's commenter-community is dominated by socially and emotionally challenged individuals.

As with creationism, I think our society ought to take more seriously the reality that there is a element of mental illness involved. Here I include adaptation disorders in "illness", broadly defined.

Social maladaptation is non-trivial and really does impact us all. Because as a nation we have been so rich in natural resources, and because we have two centuries of military successes, our wealth has afforded us to have so much useless noise in our public discussions.

Distractions have little notice when one is wealthy.

I do wonder, though, as this century progresses and the reality that infinite resources do not lie at our doorstep confronts us, whether we will tolerate such destructive idiocy anymore. Paranoia is bad, but at the group level it can be horribly destructive. Eventually we'll just become too inefficient and unresponsive to world events, and we'll just fall apart locally as we become unable to muster real social (group) action to address what needs to be done.

I contend this is already happening, around me. When I walk around and see infrastructure that is crumbling, when I see homeless people (in large number here in San Diego where it never snows), when I see houses abandoned because payments can't be made and there are no new buyers (and these houses do weather and fall into disrepair), and so on... when I see these things I wonder to myself whether this will spread and get worse, or whether as a community we will work together to make the entire society a better place.

However, if our community is filled with people in fear of each other, paranoid about any authority figure or organization, it will be impossible to make the community better.

To me, the merchants of fear (in this particular instance the DailyCaller) are among the lowest of the lows in our society. It's self-destructive idiocy.

CSM: House panel cites Eric Holder for contempt. Will he go to jail?

Technically speaking, it’s possible he could end up in the slammer. But don’t hold your breath – it almost certainly isn’t going to happen. In the modern era, citing an administration official for contempt is often just a tactical maneuver in a larger Congress-White House dispute. It can put some added pressure on the administration, sure. But the executive branch has lots of ways to delay the resulting legal proceedings.

I'm already hearing wingnuts who are sporting wood over the idea of Boehner throwing Holder in the slammer til November. The odds of it happening, when both he and Cantor wanted Issa to wait til he could get bipartisan support for the contempt motion, tells me that they'd rather just punt to the Senate and be done with it.

Over what? They are refusing to release documents from Feb 2011, after the media broke the story that F&F happened. They have released everything about the planning and implementation of F&F, including the fact that there were similar anti-gunrunning programs in the previous administration. The R's are looking for a conspiracy or a cover-up that can't have happened because the story was out there already.

It's probably similar to Waco, when an ATF operation, planned during the 41 administration, was initiated thirty days after Clinton's inauguration. Everybody blamed it on Big Gay Janet. I doubt she even knew it was happening.

There are lots of things about drones that dishonest people might not like, aside from missiles.

Iran, oil, and reality:

Japan passes law to insure Iran oil imports

Japan's parliament approved government guarantees on insurance for crude oil cargoes from Iran on Wednesday, paving the way for it to become the first of Iran's big Asian oil buyers to get round new European Union sanctions, Reuters reported.

Last month IEA said Iran's oil exports have decreased from 2.5 mbd to less than 2.0 mbd, and this figure is expected to fall even further to 1.5 mbd in the second half of 2012.

The law will take effect on June 27, a government official who requested anonymity said on Tuesday.

It allows the Japanese government, which has succeeded in getting a waiver from U.S. financial sanctions, to provide cover of up to $7.6 billion for each tanker carrying Iranian crude bound for Japan in the event of accidents.

[...]

The big Asian buyers of Iranian petroleum have reduced their imports... by about a fifth. However, I suspect that is about as much as they'll be able to cut.

And, if Iranian exports are reduced to around 1.5 mb/d one has to wonder what oil prices will be if the global economies come out of recession.

CDC report on pregnancies released today:

Estimated Pregnancy Rates and Rates of Pregnancy Outcomes for the United States, 1990–2008

In 2008, an estimated 6,578,000 pregnancies resulted in 4,248,000 live births, 1,212,000 induced abortions, and 1,118,000 fetal losses. The 2008 pregnancy rate of 105.5 pregnancies per 1,000 women aged 15–44 is 9 percent below the 1990 peak of 115.8. The teen pregnancy rate dropped 40 percent from 1990 to 2008, reaching a historic low of 69.8 per 1,000 women aged 15–19. Pregnancy rates have declined significantly for non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and Hispanic teenagers. Rates in 2008 for non-Hispanic black and Hispanic teenagers were two to three times higher than the rates for non-Hispanic white teenagers. Pregnancy rates for women in their early 20s declined to the lowest level in more than three decades, although the declines have been more modest than for teenagers. Pregnancy rates for women aged 25–29 have changed relatively little since 1990, while rates for women in their 30s and early 40s increased.

What many seem to be avoiding is the essential patriarchal nature of not only Mormonism but the specific role of a Mormon Bishop, a role which Mitt played.

Questions still exist on how authoritarian such roles can be, and in Mitt's case, how it played out in the case of pregnant women or women who were somehow found out of place in the supposed Mormon family utopia.

Everything is bigger in Texas Australia:

Australian mega-brothel gets go-ahead

71 Digital Display  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 6:44:09pm

Hi Lizards!

72 freetoken  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 6:46:31pm

Variations on this story have been popping up on the wires the past couple of days:

Killings of environmentalists appear to be on rise

The eulogies called Chut Wutty one of the few remaining activists in Cambodia brave enough to fight massive illegal deforestation by the powerful. The environmental watchdog was shot by a military policeman in April as he probed logging operations in one of the country's last great forests.

Nisio Gomes was the chief of a Brazilian tribe struggling to protect its land from ranchers. Masked men gunned him down in November; his body, quickly dragged into a pickup, has not been seen since.

Around the world, sticking up for the environment can be deadly, and it appears to be getting deadlier.

People who track killings of environmental activists say the numbers have risen dramatically in the last three years. Improved reporting may be one reason, they caution, but they also believe the rising death toll is a consequence of intensifying battles over dwindling supplies of natural resources, particularly in Latin America and Asia.

[...]

Nothing will stand in the way of our glorious capitalist future.

You can tell it's the original writing because all the little letters in it are so consistent.

So drones are another lie ginned up by the Rightwingers? Interesting how they're able to get their lies reported as facts by the mainstream media.
