Fake Outrage of the Day: Obama Confiscated Latino Cutlery!

Wingnuts get even more ridiculous
Wingnuts • Views: 23,232

Another day, another right wing fake outrage, as the entire wingnut blogosphere erupts in idiocy over a Politico Drudge-baiting report that the Secret Service confiscated the forks and knives after dinner at President Obama’s NALEO speech.

It doesn’t take a genius to see how the wingnut crowd is going to spin this one — it’s not the Secret Service doing their jobs, it’s Obama being a racisty racist again, because that’s how racist he is.

Never mind that Obama’s reception from the NALEO audience was overwhelmingly positive — in the closed loop of the wingnut Bizarro universe, this is just more proof that they really hate him. The always effervescent Dan Riehl sums up the dunce point of view:

What was Obama’s security detail thinking? They took away the Latinos’ knives and forks before Obama entered and spoke, but there’s no mention of “shivs.” You know what those people are capable of, … right? Man, his popularity really must be down.

Yeah, that’s it. His popularity must be down among Latinos.

I wouldn't put it past Mitt Romney to wear a giant sombrero to try and appeal to Latino voters.

OT: Anyone else find this image mildly disturbing?

The waitress confiscated my knife and fork after I finished dinner last night too. That's what they do.

WTF? This sounds like a fairly common practice, the only thing different was the announcement beforehand by the host.

I dont understand why politico thinks this is newsworthy.

“The Secret Service coordinates this process with staff and host committee to ensure tables are cleared of material that may be deemed hazardous prior to the arrival of the president,” Special Agent Max Milien told POLITICO. "Any implication that this was unique for this event is completely inaccurate."

In other words, the announcement at the Latino officials’ event may have been unusual, but the removal of the silverware usually takes place without anyone realizing it’s a security measure.

Yeah, Dan. Obama's popularity is down among Latinos, because they're fucking idiots who don't pay attention to Romney's extremist anti-immigrant stance, or his promise to veto the DREAM act, or Obama's latest move to prevent deportation of minors.

Even with all the money being spent by the corporations, I think the racism of the GOP may finally start really costing them elections. This might be the watershed. I hope so, anyway; unless CU gets overturned, the only thing that'll prevent it being severely corruptive is a massive spending cycle without anything much to show for it.

A total non story. Security considerations like this have been going on like this for decades. When I was overseas, Clinton came to visit the base once. The Marine Honor guard had to remove the bolts from their rifles for security reasons. Its SOP for the Secret Service.

re: #7 Kragar

That probably got spun by Limbaugh as some anti-patriotic thing too. It's not like any Marine has ever been a danger to a president.

It looks to me like the politico article was a fair piece of reporting....

A Secret Service spokesman confirmed that the agency made the request, but said such requirements are common at large events where the president speaks at about the same time people are dining.

Still, there are a wide variety of breakfasts, lunches and dinners the president attends where diners still have the full complement of silverware as Obama speaks.

Milien declined to comment on the discrepancy. However, it’s known that the Secret Service adjusts security depending on the size of the crowd and how much officials know about who’s in attendance. At some events, guests must pass through magnetometers. At others, they don’t.

The only thing unusual is they made an announcement out of it. Maybe there was a time constraint and they needed to hurry things along or maybe the organizers just made the announcement unnecessarily.

Look at Sheldon Adelson who has vowed to spend $100 million of his own money to defeat Obama. He operates a casino in China. What would stop a foreigner who wanted to influence American elections to simply push his money across a table at the casino with the agreement from Adelson it would go to the cause. What better place to launder money than at a casino.

But its game on with Citizens United. Good luck stopping Sheldon.

Right. IOW, Politico was "just asking questions." Yes, I saw that but I also read this line several times, "Still, there are a wide variety of breakfasts, lunches and dinners the president attends where diners still have the full complement of silverware as Obama speaks." Followed by an onslaught of wingnuts in the comment section. Basically Politico is engaging in a rather sophisticated form of providing red meat for their audience.

Maybe it's fair reporting, although it has been updated from the original with more comments from SS, but what is newsworthy about it? What was the purpose?

Look at the comments...see how people are interpreting it.

This article is Drudge Report link bait. Politico has become totally shameless about this. They know exactly what they're doing with non-stories like this - pandering to the right wing blogs and Drudge, because a Drudge link sends them millions of hits.

It's about the bottom line. Has nothing to do with news.

Which brings up the point that 'unbiased' reporting is nothing of the sort; the story that's chosen to be reported on is as important as how it's reported on.

If all you do all day long is post stories about black people attacking white people, even if the stories are completely factual, you're driving an obvious agenda.

Red meat to up the audience numbers is the bias. Not pro GOP. Pro controversy. Makes for page hits and that is the reality of the game that is afoot here. You'll see this swing both ways as the election season proceeds.

I recall utensil confiscation happening before. They seem to do it when the President visits a restaurant. I think it happened at this event, too.

Sounds reasonable. Although we know who the biggest market is for this. Drudge bait is the gift that keeps on giving and can provide a deluge of page hits.

Which, IMO helps explain the mistaken impression of partisan bias in many cases. What I'd like to see well studied is why certain media are so RW and others so left leaning. This despite the fact there are programs from both sides in each and every media.

Well, well well....

Finally someone in the conservative movement is questioning the motives of the ambiguous statements of Mitt Romney. Andrew McCartney of PJmedia, is finally seeing the flip-flopping of the Mittens.

Just in case you were thinking there’s no way Romney could blow this thing …

Obama issues an executive order that is his most egregious assault yet on the separation-of-powers foundation of our constitutional system, regardless whether the subject matter was immigration or tiddlywinks, and Mitt Romney’s big problem with it is — wait for it … — that it is a mere “stop-gap measure” not a “permanent solution.” Romney is intentionally ambiguous about his intentions; his advisors — who won’t get their stories straight, probably on purpose — give similarly weasel assurances to the disparate factions they are courting; and the only thing you can really be sure about is that Romney is committed (or, at least, as committed as Romney ever gets) to the Bush/GOP Establishment dream of — all together now –comprehensive immigration reform.
(....)

So the question becomes: Is there anything, other than Romneycare, that Mitt won’t, er, evolve on?

Looks like someone is ready for a rude awakening; discovering Romney is the fraud we already think he is...

That's the key right there. Either Politico had an attack of conscience or the Secret Service called and said they were full of shit.

I'm guessing the latter.
