New Obama Ad: ‘Makes You Wonder’
The new Obama campaign ad is another body blow to Mitt Romney. Romney seems to be on the ropes, unable to come up with a good response.

That one is going to leave a mark. I'm wondering what he's hiding that he feels the need to resist releasing them so hard.

The funny thing to me is, continuing from the last thread, it really might not be anything much. Romney hides from perceived dangers large and small. He's just intrinsically unable to respond to anything other than lapping yes-man adulation.

"But Obama's college transcripts!"
Sure enough Donald Trump brought that up this morning.

He brought it up last Friday too. It's all I've heard the wingnuts go on about, about how Obama isn't "transparent" and so why should Romney be.
They really do believe that the answer to demands for Romney to come clean is just to go "But Obama doesn't do it either!"

I dunno. I think if it were nothing, he'd play his cards a little and then release them, and be like see this was just a smear campaign. I dunno though.

Romney is right in that they would be picked apart and become the total object of media and blogger attention for weeks, overshadowing his VP choice.
If he does release them it will be after his VP announcement and preferably at the height of the Olympics.

I think the most likely explanations are:
- essentially zero taxes on massive income in 2008/09
- some really horrible investment (e.g., Iranian Nuclear Power Inc.)
I think one or both of these is probably the case.

It's the only thin reed they have.
Maybe it was yesterday. Saw the Tweet this morning...
TRUMP TO ROMNEY: Release tax returns when Obama releases college records... drudge.tw/OAcJ2V— DRUDGE REPORT (@DRUDGE_REPORT) July 16, 2012

Romney can't play cards for shit. Any other politician I'd agree with you, but I've just been burned too many times expecting competence from Mitt Romney.
He had to spend a hundred million dollars and six months to put away the likes of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, for fuck's sakes.

I'm of the opinion that there's nothing criminal there, if only because "The Elite" have written the laws to make such things perfectly legal. But what probably is there is proof that, for one or more years, Willard was getting by without paying any taxes while socking away millions into foreign accounts.

I'll bet Trump is still mad about people laughing at him at the Correspondent's Dinner.

Oh I didn't mean to imply I thought there was something criminal, I think it could be something like that which could be politically damaging in the court of public opinion.

Thing is, in the court of public opinion, absence of evidence is every bit as damning as evidence of absence. Just his refusal to release them, with a million and one excuses being offered for why he can't/won't, is doing a shitload of damage.

Yeah that's a good point oto. And speaking of Newt and Santorum, that brings me to why I think Mitt is a paper tiger of a candidate. I mean as you say, he had to spend 100 million to put away a crazy socon nutjob and a has been with literally zero ethics.

Donald is pushing the meme that Obama put "Kenya" on his "place of birth" on the application in order to qualify for, oh I dunno, higher out-of-state tuition fees or something.

I don't really expect Donald Trump (or Mitt Romney, for that matter) to understand the nuances of university tuition.

Obama's transcripts will show he was only retroactively a legal scholar; he actually majored in sports medicine for three years.

Maybe this is a good time for Romney to fly to Europe and watch his dancing horse at the Olympics. Too bad that's not until late next week.

Topics raised by Romney camp so far today: Fast and Furious, Tony Rezko, pot use, Obama's American-ness, Fisker, Solyndra. It's 12:30.

I thought the hope now was that he took Indonesian citizenship, and his stepfather's name.

Either way, this would be an amusing time for Obama to release his entire, rather dull, college applications and transcripts, and watch them scrabble for something to complain about.

No need, in just a few hours, Ol' Sheriff Joe's "Cold Case Posse" is providing "irrefutable proof" that Obama's birth certificate is a fake.
I'll need to remember to grab some popcorn while I'm at the store.

Good, then fuck him. We can make up any opinion of what might be in them we want. Just as they can make up anything about the presidents transcripts they want. Facts are Obama graduated and RMoney seems to have many different stories about his time with/away from Bain and doesn't pay as much of a percentage of his income into taxes as I do.

Yeah, I never see any of these on TV. My vote, statistically, is a foregone conclusion, and no one ever wastes money showing them to me.
Bless the Internet, for allowing me equal access as an American to campaign ads.

I'm going on the record with my guess....
There was a time, during the Bush Administration, when terrorism finance investigations had stumbled across non-terrorist money that tax cheats were hiding abroad. Swiss banks were cooperating and altering their strict privacy policies, turning over records, people were going to be caught.
Congress offered up a limited-time amnesty opportunity for these tax evaders to declare, apologise, pay up with minimal penalty and no criminal prosecution. I think Romney jumped on that amnesty train.
