If you live in the East SF Bay Area there is a cool iPhone app for your Fire District called Pulse Point. It lets you know of Fire Response Incidents, as well as notifies you of local need for CPR, and hopefully you can respond faster than the fire department. That will be an interesting metric to follow.

Glenn Beck: Media and Occupy sit ‘closer to the communists’ than Democratic Party
Creating a spectrum of the “scale of freedom,” he argued that “People are fleeing the parties. And they are standing somewhere in-between.”
On Beck’s spectrum, the Democratic Party stands close to “total government,” which includes fascism, communism, totalitarianism, and the “theocratic state.” The GOP stands slightly farther away from government control. The Constitution is fairly close to total anarchy and freedom, while the tea party, he goes on, lies somewhere between the apparently broad gap between the GOP and the Constitution.

There’s a debate over transportation funding going on in Pennsylvania.
Corbett’s plan rests on one key proposal from a transportation funding advisory commission he put together at the start of his term: lifting a cap built into a longstanding tax on fuel at the wholesale level.
Removing that lid on the so-called oil company tax in the three steps that Corbett proposes over the next five years would generate nearly $2 billion in new funds annually by 2018, when the cap would be totally eliminated. That’s based on current pricing levels.
“It is time for oil and gas companies to pay their fair share of the cost of the infrastructure supporting their industry,” Corbett said in his budget address.
I’m not convinced about Corbett’s newfound evangelism, especially when fracking operators pay such a low tax.
It got the attention of the purity squad, however:
Americans for Tax Reform, the Washington-based group led by antitax leader Grover Norquist that circulated the pledge among members of Congress and state legislatures, issued its decree Wednesday.
“It is a tax,” said spokesman Patrick Gleason.
Unfortunately, even with $2 Billion dollars more in revenue, the state is probably going to let the $6 Million subsidy to the Pittsburgh-Philadelpha rail line wither on the vine.
The great mystery is how much of that cost will be passed onto the consumer.
The plan, as proposed, does not contain any mechanism to prohibit that.
And when the funding commission released its 2011 report, the going estimate was that it could cost as much as 20 cents per gallon of gas, if distributors and retailers passed that entire tab onto motorists.
Oh hey. If you listen to the arguments the state is making, they’re blaming fuel efficient cars for their funding woes, an argument also used in Virginia.

Greets and saluts from the frozen tundra of the NYC metro area. Not nearly as bad as New England, where some spots got 2-3 feet, but plenty bad. 10-12 inches in Northern NJ, much lower amounts in and around the southern part of NYC, but pushing 2-3 feet along Eastern Long Island.
The storm totals are pretty impressive and the range is just as crazy.
Roads are a mess across much of the area, particularly on Long Island where major roads are closed because of abandoned cars and accidents. My own block got plowed out a couple of hours ago and the roads are down to asphalt. Not too shabby.

The Pledgemaster probably will get most of the tax revenue, if not all of it, spiked. State legislators still fear crossing Grover Norquist on what he regards as a major issue.

Only a dusting of snow here in Center City. Didn’t drop below freezing at ground level until pretty late, so we got drizzle for a lot longer.
I presume snow depths are higher in the suburbs and as one proceeds north.
Quiet time with a cup of tea while contemplating whether to cook a full breakfast or not. “Quiet” is relative since Cat A just hid in the bathroom sink and then did a “death from above” bombing attack on Cat B. They are now tearing around the apartment. All in good fun mind you!

So here’s something that’s pretty cool…any SF Bay Area lizards are encouraged to check it out. There’s this grand piano that is in poor condition someone wanted to get rid of, and the local guy who tunes pianos said it wasn’t worth restoring completely, so he built a small platform overlooking the pacific, and he and a few other musicians (standing bass, accordion, violin, etc.) get together every night around 5pm this month and play the same sonata until the sun sets into the Pacific. Once the last of the corona disappears, they stop. We went last night and caught the end of it…quite lovely.
At the end of the month, I think they’re going to do a piano bonfire.

W. suburban Boston: the snow was up so high (2+ feet) against our storm doors that they wouldn’t open. Fortunately we have a sliding door to our deck in the back and I was able to get out that way, shovel out the stairs down to the ground, and then trudge through knee-deep snow to the front to unblock one of the front doors. The alternative would have been to take the glass out of a screen door and get out that way — that, or just call for help.

Not in NYC but in NJ, and just finished clearing away about a foot of snow total. Without the snowblower, I’d still be out there. Gonna warm up a bit before grabbing the camera and shooting the scenes out here. Very pretty and it’s a bright blue sky. Windy though.
Madison Ave and the rest of Manhattan got cleared pretty quick - the Sanitation Department goes to town like you wouldn’t believe - and the City now has an app that lets you track where the plows are or have been. I think it’s something that other metro areas ought to adopt, so you can get an idea of road conditions and when your area will get plowed out.

Let’s see, I went through the blizzard of 78 in NYC - I remember 5-6 foot drifts on my block and it took a couple of days for plows to come through the area. First and only time I can remember them closing schools.
Then, I was up in Albany for the blizzard of 1993. Amazing amounts of snow, but it’s Albany, then they just pushed the snow into the Hudson River and things were up and running a day later. Blizzard of 2003? In NJ, and had to shovel out the car, but not too bad otherwise.
This storm? Not as bad as the others based on where I was at the time, but it definitely put down record snows into New England and parts of Long Island. 30 inches of snow or more is a whole lot of snow.
Oh, and it’s going to be in the 40s this week, so flooding now becomes a concern.

Two Al-Qaeda linked commanders were killed in the U.S. drone strike that targeted a militants’ safe haven in Pakistan’s northwest tribal area last night, local media reported on Saturday.
Quoting unidentified military sources, local TV channel Dawn reported on Saturday that the U.S. drones that pounded a house at the border area of North and South Waziristan agency killed seven people including two Al-Qaeda linked commanders.
The killed leaders were Abu Majid-al-Iraqi and a Yemen national Sheikh Abu Waqas, said the report.
Sheikh Abu Waqas was a bomb and explosives expert, and he was having a very distinguished position in the group.

Not solely owned by Islamists. Just dig into military history and you start finding suicidal behaviors by losing sides. Kamikaze attacks by the Japanese in WW2 is the easy one to find. The Germans had similar stuff going on including a fighter squadron planning on purposefully ramming enemy bombers.

My parents stayed but they’ve often told me about how bad it was. Chicago did open up again faster than Boston, but we had it bad again the next year. In 1979 Chicago got slugged with a huge storm that dump an immense amount of snow on a Friday during the PM rush hour. The lack of progress in clearing the snow from the 79’ blizzard did something not done before or since: It caused the Chicago Machine to lose the mayoral election that year.

Destro was comparing Abu Ghraib with the orders-of-magnitude worse actions of the Bosnian Serbs. Iraqis prison did have rape rooms but that was under another of Destro’s “Middle East Heroes”, Saddam Hussein.
Overall, his comments also made clear he is still suffering from 3rd-stage Bush Derangement Syndrome (BDS).

78 blizzard was just digging out more snow in northern NY. Was one of those winters where it snowed in early November and there was just varying amounts of snow on the ground until the full scale thaw in April.
More memorable to me was getting caught in the Veteran’s Day snow storm in DC in 1987 two days after I moved down there to take up an IT job.
