Kansas Religious Fanatics Set to Enact Most Restrictive Anti-Abortion Law in US

The right is dragging women back into the Dark Ages one state at a time
Wingnuts • Views: 34,022

In what has to be the most direct, broad-ranging attack yet on women’s right to a safe, legal abortion, Kansas right wing lunatics have now passed a measure that would effectively criminalize all abortion, and requires doctors to lie to women about a nonexistent link between abortion and breast cancer. Bad craziness getting out of control: Kansas Set to Enact Law Saying Life Starts at Fertilization.

The religious right is slowly but surely dragging this country back into the Dark Ages, and making women into chattel. I don’t know why we’re overseas fighting the Taliban when we’ve got our own branch of these thuggish fanatics right here in the good ol’ USA.

Lawmakers in Kansas passed an extensive anti-abortion measure Friday night, which Gov. Sam Brownback is expected to sign into law. The bill declares that life begins “at fertilization,” prohibits abortions related to the baby’s sex and blocks tax breaks for health care providers that perform abortions.

The House passed the bill 90-30, hours after the Senate approved it 28-10.

The Associated Press quoted Republican Kansas Sen. Steve Fitzgerald, a supporter of the bill, as saying, “The human is a magnificent piece of work in all stages of development, wondrous in every regard, from the microscopic until full development.”

The bill, called The Women’s Right to Know Act, also requires doctors to provide controversial information to patients either seeking or inquiring about an abortion of a link between the procedure and breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute concluded in 2003 that abortion does not raise the risk for breast cancer, but physicians would have to address the issue as a “potential risk” for women seeking an abortion.

If this bill really does say that life begins at fertilization, can a pregnant woman get benefits treating the embryo as a child? Are they going to begin to count miscarriages as deaths— and since we know a lot of miscarriages go undetected, they’ll have to add in an unknown but significant number of deaths, too.

Are they going to do any of these things that would signify they really believe life begins at conception, or are they just going to stick with the “We believe this in so far as it means that women should be forced to bear children, and not in any other way”?

Do not expect any sort of logical consistency, this is just a way around Roe v. Wade, and in line with Obdi’s statement that “We believe this in so far as it means that women should be forced to bear children, and not in any other way”

It’s not an attack on republicans though, at least it was ot intended to be, it was an attack on Extreme nationalism with America as the country in question that the notationalists are attached to (at least that was what I read dear god no spoilers had to leave for holiday on the 23 of March so will come home with a copy of the game waiting for me) it is just that the Republican Party no longer seems to represent anything but blind nationalism.

“In addition to the provisions on sex-selection abortions and when life begins, the bill also would:

• Establish a statutory mandate that abortion doctors must provide controversial medical information to women who are seeking an abortion, specifically of a link between abortion and breast cancer.

• Ban women from deducting any abortion expenses from their state income taxes.

• Eliminate damage to a woman’s mental health as justification for allowing a mid- to late-term abortion.

• Prohibit paid agents or volunteers connected to abortion providers – including Planned Parenthood – from providing any information on human sexuality to students in public schools.

• Require clinics that perform abortions to provide women with detailed information on gestational development.

• Require abortion providers to provide patients with a directory of abortion-alternative programs.”

From cancer.gov

In February 2003, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) convened a workshop of over 100 of the world’s leading experts who study pregnancy and breast cancer risk. Workshop participants reviewed existing population-based, clinical, and animal studies on the relationship between pregnancy and breast cancer risk, including studies of induced and spontaneous abortions. They concluded that having an abortion or miscarriage does not increase a woman’s subsequent risk of developing breast cancer. A summary of their findings can be found in the Summary Report: Early Reproductive Events and Breast Cancer Workshop.

But what do scientists know; if the world is only 6,000 years old, there just hasn’t been enough time for study.

Native works.

A first language (also native language, mother tongue, arterial language, or L1) is the language(s) a person has learned from birth[1] or within the critical period, or that a person speaks the best and so is often the basis for sociolinguistic identity. In some countries, the terms native language or mother tongue refer to the language of one’s ethnic group rather than one’s first language.[2] Sometimes, there can be more than one mother tongue, (for example, when the child’s parents speak different languages). Those children are usually called bilingual…

TechCrunch Founder Michael Arrington’s History Of Abuse Allegations Includes An Assault Investigation

When TechCrunch founder turned venture capitalist Mike Arrington was accused last week of rape and abuse by an ex-girlfriend, many in Silicon Valley were shocked, but not entirely surprised. This is because rumors that Arrington abused women have circulated almost from the time he started his career in the tech industry. Gawker has learned of two previous instances, a decade apart, in which Arrington was accused of violent, abusive behavior towards women. One—in which a coworker and ex-girlfriend accused him of assaulting her in a hotel room—resulted in an internal investigation by his then-employer. In the other incident, he allegedly threw a different girlfriend against a wall. Neither episode ended in any real fallout for Arrington.

Last week, entrepreneur Jenn Allen, who used to date Arrington, publicly accused him of physical abuse and rape in a Facebook post and in a comment on a subsequent Gawker story. The accusations have been much-discussed, at least in private, at least among the Silicon Valley elite, of which Arrington is a truculent but influential member. And it has opened the floodgates, as former friends and colleagues come forward with their own troubling stories about Arrington’s past.

I have always had great difficulty expressing myself in writing, and my husband usually has to write my letters and official correspondence. This can be very frustrating at times when I am unable to convey my feelings of great horror at these laws and the belief systems that lead to such laws.

These ideas deeply affect our society. It is vital for women to have control over reproduction. This is not just a vague concept. It affects people directly and is easiest to see when you are talking to teenager and her family about an unwanted pregnancy(especially if it comes from a sexual assault). I wish the people making these laws could just actually talk to women and their families in these situations. However, I don’t think really think it would help since they are incapable of empathy.

There is a PERSON/WOMAN involve in these decisions and no one so uninvolved in the situation should have any say in it.

I also wish to emphasize they have absolutely no scientific basis for their beliefs. Both the egg and sperm are already alive before fertilization. Life doesn’t just magically start at fertilization.

English is the native language of some Americans. For some Americans it is Spanish, Chinese, Laotian, Cree, ESL. For lucky ones, it’s multiple languages.

You’re not born knowing any language so ‘native language’ doesn’t actually make a ton of sense, but it kind of indicates what language your parents speak, since that will be your ‘primary’ language even if you’re fluent in English from going to school or Spanish from hanging out with your honcos.

if you study language history, the idea that there is a native language of a place or people becomes more difficult to hold

english has only been the native language of people living in england since sometime after 450 AD. before that, most people in britain seem to have been speaking celtic lanugages. however, celtic culture did not orginate in britain and ireland, but on the continent, it seems originally in the switzerland s.e. france western austria area sometime before 800 bc, and of course grew out of some previous cultures in the area

but people were clearly living in the british isles long before the celts got there, and dna studies seem to show that most brits come from ancient stock. the question of what languages were spoken in the british isles before the continental celts arrived is impossible to answer

however, irish folklore preserves stories of the arrival of the celts, and names cultures that arrived in ireland before then, namely the tuatha da danae and the firbolgs. i wish it were possible to know something about what languages these groups spoke…

Wha?

Schiliro, 38, allegedly turned the Marcus Hook Police Department into a private escort agency, ordering a cop on the late-night shift to bring a 20-year-old man to his house in a marked police vehicle.

He gave the man wine, then allegedly offered 20 to 30 times to perform oral sex on him, according to the report.

When the man repeatedly refused, Schiliro, who as mayor controls the police department, started to pull out handguns, informed the man that he was “going to be a hostage,” fired a 9 mm bullet into the wall and said that he’d ordered police to stay away from the house, the report states.

“The mayor, I believe, has indicated to the press that he has some issues,” said Delaware County District Attorney John Whelan.

Speaking of atavists, I notice that John Hawks, about whose massively open course on human evolution I linked a few days ago, mentions this as he designs the course:

Massive courses: massive opportunity or massive problem?

[…]

Ariely also discusses some of the negatives of a very large student sample: the greater likelihood of disgruntled students looking to draw attention in a public forum, for example.

This is a really concern for me as I prepare my course, “Human Evolution: Past and Future” (which I announced here earlier this week). A fraction of my students may have goals that include promoting creationist or fringe ideas, for example.

One of my favorite Ebert blog posts was one in which he wrote about losing half of his face to cancer, something most of us can’t imagine having to deal with. There’s not the slightest hint of self-pity in it, nor is there fear or despair. There is acceptance (not to be confused with resignation). I find it inspiring.

I’ve written before about how I’ve come to terms with my appearance. The best thing that happened to me was a full-page photo in Esquire, showing exactly how I look today. No point in denying it. No way to hide it. Better for it to be out there. You don’t like it, that’s your problem. I’m happy I don’t look worse. I made a simple decision to just get on with life. I was a writer, so I was lucky. There was no question I would continue reviewing movies. And when I started writing this blog, it gave me even more focus, feedback, satisfaction. I plunged into it with sometimes desperate concentration. I wrote, therefore I lived. Another surgical attempt was proposed, but I said no. Enough is enough. I would look the way I looked, and express myself in print, and I would be content.

They’re going to make a run at overturning Roe and PP of PA v. Casey. They’re gunning for a legal fight, even though restrictions of this kind on their face should be thrown out as unconstitutional restrictions under Casey’s analysis.

Full text of the Kansas HB 2253.

(2) “Unborn children” or “unborn child” shall include all unborn children or the offspring of human beings from the moment of fertilization until birth at every stage of biological development.

State defines abortion as:

(a) “Abortion” means the use or prescription of any instrument, medicine, drug or any other substance or device to terminate the pregnancy of a woman known to be pregnant with an intention other than to increase the probability of a live birth, to preserve the life or health of the child after live birth, or to remove a dead unborn child who died as the result of natural causes in utero, accidental trauma or a criminal assault on the pregnant woman or her unborn child, and which causes the premature termination of the pregnancy.

I have no idea how they’re going to treat unborn children for tax benefits at the state level, and federal language (which gives benefits like the EITC for children of the taxpayer) - and under common usage, would indicate a live baby, not a fetus in utero. But the KS law would seem to extend that right to a fetus upon fertilization, which then runs into a tax question when a pregnancy spans two tax years. Then there are things like welfare and other benefits for children at the state level. And what about a pregnancy that terminates naturally.

This whole thing is rotten to the core. And it undermine’s a woman’s civil rights, as the KS legislature supersedes a woman’s rights to those of an unborn fetus, embryo, and zygote. It’s absurd.

Yes. They have defined unborn child from moment of fertilization of ovum with sperm. That means IVF facilities will be engaging in mass murder. And couples or individuals that want to have kids but need assistance of IVF to accomplish that will leave KS because IVF procedures usually implant several embryos to maximize chances of a successful implantation.

Another big blot on the KS law.

103 freetoken  Sat, Apr 6, 2013 3:30:09pm

NatGeo blogger Virginia Hughes responds to someone with an axe to grind against “the Left”:

Why I Keep Harping on the Dynamic Genome

This week one of my readers, Lauren, suggested that epigenetics is a leftist plot:

The entire concept of epigenetics is being highjacked today for the Left’s eternal propaganda of neo-Lysenkoism — that “Nurture over Nature”, environment and not heredity, is what most significantly determines human qualities.

It’s essential to understand that the “methylome” is NOT — as the Left would like to give us the impression — an alternate kind of biological code created by the environment. It is not a competing genome that can overrule inherited DNA. It’s only a part of the chemical apparatus produced BY the DNA, to operate the cell.

I wouldn’t bother giving Lauren any attention except that the comment gets under my skin. I never said or implied that environmental influences determine human qualities, for one thing. But worse than that, implicit in her remark is the opposite claim, which is just as insidious and, unfortunately, much more commonly argued: that genes determine our fate, that the genome is fixed, that environments don’t matter.

I’ve ranted before about the perils of genetic determinism and how it has contributed to an overblown fear of all things genetic. Where does the idea come from? And why does it have such a stronghold on our culture? Should I blame social Darwinism? Nazis? Gattaca? Or maybe it starts in biology class.

[…]

Yes, a fear of all things genetic. I’ve copied here at times portions of fear-the-genetics stories, that get floated more frequently these days its seems.

Oh, that commenter “Lauren” had more to say on that previous Hughes blog entry:

[…] some Afghans have light eyes because they are partly descended from the original Indo-Iranian tribes from the north who had light eyes, and from Alexander the Great’s soldiers, some of whom had light eyes. Not because, as the Left tries to claim, or insinuate, or blur, or give the impression, race changes quickly in response to climate.

So much wrong in that little paragraph.

The latest flare up of atavism in Kansas is just one instance of a large pool of general throw-back, reaction-ism, against things modern.

A Secret Deal on Drones, Sealed in Blood

Mr. Muhammad and his followers had been killed by the C.I.A., the first time it had deployed a Predator drone in Pakistan to carry out a “targeted killing.” The target was not a top operative of Al Qaeda, but a Pakistani ally of the Taliban who led a tribal rebellion and was marked by Pakistan as an enemy of the state. In a secret deal, the C.I.A. had agreed to kill him in exchange for access to airspace it had long sought so it could use drones to hunt down its own enemies.

That back-room bargain, described in detail for the first time in interviews with more than a dozen officials in Pakistan and the United States, is critical to understanding the origins of a covert drone war that began under the Bush administration, was embraced and expanded by President Obama, and is now the subject of fierce debate. The deal, a month after a blistering internal report about abuses in the C.I.A.’s network of secret prisons, paved the way for the C.I.A. to change its focus from capturing terrorists to killing them, and helped transform an agency that began as a cold war espionage service into a paramilitary organization.

In addition, they are both going way the hell out of their way to intimidate women, in Egypt with the virginity test, here in the United States we have the Republicans promoting the Vaginal Wand issue.

Also, they both tend to be hardcore free market, cutting subsidies and safety nets to the bone. They both use have a bogeyman they use to keep others riled up. The Muslim Brotherhood uses Jewish people, and the Republicans use Muslims.

Be careful of the rewriting of history.

The CIA was into far more than just intelligence gathering, from the beginning. It was authorized to conduct covert operations from the very start. Hillenkoetter did active operations in Italian politics. Counter-espionage operations would include killing operatives and their associates, if necessary.

“Intelligence” was never purely a passive activity.

It’s a “wall gun”, used to fire from a mount on the wall of your stronghold when a large group of zombies show up. A modern round chambered for that gun will destroy a zombie’s brain with one shot, and the round will keep going to knock down and damage the zombie right behind the destroyed one.

I find it comical, though in an ugly sort of way, that people are so concerned about drones today, as if the US (via the CIA or some other organization) hasn’t been actively meddling all around the world since WWII.

The point of using drones is so one doesn’t have to insert larger operational units (special forces) or full scaled war (Iraq I and II).

Nevertheless, the meddling remains.

The US uses force to change the world into what we want. (Though it backfires now and then.)

I’m reminded of Mitt Romney’s bald faced lying and denial in the “debates” when this issue was raised in a roundabout way. Romney denied the US ever involves itself in other countries’ affairs. It was a classic window into what it means to be “Mitt Romney”.

Alaska trims expectations for North Slope oil output

Oil production from Alaska’s North Slope has fallen faster than expected, even though the fiscal impact was offset by higher prices, according to a semiannual forecast released on Friday by the Alaska Department of Revenue.

[…]

North Slope production will continue its steady decline through the foreseeable future, dropping to 526,600 bpd in fiscal 2014, before sliding to 344,500 by fiscal 2022, according to the forecast. North Slope oil output is far below peak production of about 2.1 million bpd reached in 1988.

I don’t think I’d want a rifle as my primary anti-zombie weapon. If it turned out that a .22 could reliably put down a walker, I might make an exception for the Marlin model 60. I had one of those as a wee lad, and it was amazingly accurate out to fairly long (for .22 LR) distances. Much more accurate than the Ruger 10/22. It’s relatively quiet, and you can carry hundreds of rounds with comparatively little weight. The 60’s cons for zombie defense are the really stupid tube magazine, and the extreme difficulty of field stripping it for cleaning.

I think the best way to go is to try to find defensible high ground, and establish barriers and booby traps for medium range / perimeter defense. Be careful to plan fall-back positions ahead of time, in case of a breech. Know your exits. Consider flame to be the only thing more dangerous than the zombies.

The thing is, those estimated production values for the future includes new production from the much larger NPR. Those estimates also include production from Point Thompson, described by the Alaska DNR as “Alaska’s largest undeveloped oil and gas field.”

While ANWR gets all the attention, part of that is due to how it became a token for political football.

Good catch. That was a bit of editorializing from NYT and, of course, it’s not really true. The article is an interesting piece of journalism but the usual caveats should apply: Anonymous sources should be taken with a grain of salt and if the sources are accurate they have been given approval to talk to reporters. Very few things show up in the NYT (or any other news outlet) by accident.
Just like rendition, new administrations rearrange the furniture and shuffle the cards but very little actually changes.

Furthermore, just like many other states, their state legislature is overwhelmingly male (75-80%) so there’s not significant balance there as far as perspective on the entire issue of abortion/reproductive rights.

Like my sis-in-law, a nurse, likes to say, “If men could get pregnant, abortions would be available at 7-11.”

7 Reasons Marriage Is Falling Apart in America

[…]

5) Increased Economic Options For Women: There was a time when the surest path to economic security for women was to get married. Today, that’s not necessarily true. Women on the low end of the pay scale can have the government step in to pay many of their bills. Women with college degrees or in demand skills can make just as much as a man if they’re willing to put in the same hours. Those additional economic options make marriage — and staying in a difficult marriage — less attractive to women.

Starving Sea Lion Pups Still Washing Up by the Hundreds in California

There’s no indication the ocean plans to stop littering Southern California’s shores with the tiny bodies of starving sea lion pups any time soon.

For three months, these frail animals have been found stranded along California’s waterfront. As of Apr. 4, roughly 1,100 pups have entered marine mammal rehabilitation centers in the area. They likely represent a fraction of the animals in trouble offshore.

“We’re still getting strandings of animals at kind of equal rates to what they had been,” said Sarah Wilkin, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s marine mammal stranding coordinator for the state of California. “We don’t know how long the event is going to go on.”

Last week, NOAA declared the mass stranding an “Unusual Mortality Event.” Now, teams of investigators are assembling, ready to tackle the mystery surrounding the event. So far, no one knows what’s causing the sea lion pups to starve. The magnitude of the stranding resembles what has been seen during El Niño years, when warm waters cause ocean productivity to decrease and the sea lions’ food supply to disappear.
But there hasn’t been an El Niño event in years.

At this point, centers from Santa Barbara to San Diego are at capacity. In the past two weeks, pups not in need of critical care have been left for observation on the beaches until space opens up in a rehab center.

Boiled down, the list basically lays out the reality that marriage has declined as male dominance has. As men have ceased to be the sole breadwinners, have shared the workplace with female workers, and ceased being the undisputed lord and master of their household, marriage rates have dropped off. No-fault’s thrown in there, but it’s an effect rather than a cause, the result of rising numbers of couples in the 60s who were perjuring themselves on the stand just to get a divorce.

Rick Perry and Texas are where its at. North Dakota, too. Even if Alaska doesn’t yield as much oil as thought, we’re finding more from other sources now. The production within CONUS is especially good because it also gives us an abundance of natural gas, which we can liquify and sell to Europe.

I moved halfway across town recently, and more than once during the process I found myself wishing I had a truck. My ‘People’s Wagon’ can only haul so much at a time. It’s also not very dog-friendly (incidentally, I feel I must point out that I hold in very low regard people who allow their dog to ride in the bed of a pickup.) But it’s paid for, and the gas mileage is about as good as I can hope to get without negating the savings by taking on a new car payment.

During the 2008 election, one particular branch of my family tree somewhat surprisingly caught Palin Fever and thereafter went Full Metal Wingnut. I’m not asserting a causal relationship, but at exactly the same time, a few of them bought new SUVs even though they are exclusively urban commuters who only rarely take on more than 1 or 2 passengers. Each one of them independently claimed that part of the reason they bought these giant glorified station wagons is because they perceived them to be somehow “safer” than sedans. My personal preference would be that they simply pay attention to the road and the other vehicles around them, but apparently that’s wussified anti-Murrican talk, or something.

Global production of petroleum the past 8 years has roughly plateaued, even though prices have risen to pay for the exploration of ever increasingly difficult to produce regions.

ND petroleum production is peaking as the Bakken production is from rapid decline wells … Texas petroleum production is very well past peak and on its eternal decline….

Global production of petroleum the past 8 years has roughly plateaued, even though prices have risen to pay for the exploration of ever increasingly difficult to produce regions.

The truth is simply this - petroleum is now in its golden years. It may take a century or two to wind down the whole endeavor, but the big boom time in humanity due to petroleum is over.

That’s not what Austin Blue was saying. He was talking about a big new field coming online there.

re: #211 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

Gas prices have sucked for quite awhile. I look at people who buy gas hogs today, as fools. All their disposable income going into their macho tank.

Yes, I do.

They killed that building?

Yes..It took only a few days to raze and now they are prepping to build a new building. They needed it. It was old.
Be well..

Big pickups and SUVs give the people inside a false sense of security. They are safer in some ways — more mass and sturdier construction gives you some advantages in a collision, but not safer in others — higher centers of gravity make it easier to roll the vehicle over, greater mass means longer stopping distances.

Plus, they suck your wallet dry everytime you fill the 38-gallon tank.

re: #21 Sol Berdinowitz

This is just a blueprint of what the GOP would foist on all of America if we vote them in nationally.

Well lets hope it gets overturned ( which its very unlikely not to be ) and the people behind these laws lose come next election, since most likely that’s going to happen someday, and that way they’ll be less likely to try it, if they know very few people will support it, and it will be likely to get them to lose their power.

This is kind of like the gun control argument.

It’s a constitutional right but how far can you regulate it.

220 CriticalDragon1177  Sat, Apr 6, 2013 6:59:49pm

re: #219 worknhard

Thing is, its obvious that Republicans in states like Kansas aren’t trying to regulate it, they’re trying to out right ban it.

FTW? I’m slow.

I think that’s “Ft. Worth”, if only because “For The Win” doesn’t work in context.

Looks like a small squirrel.

Is that a live squirrel or a taxidermed one like the mice in Dinner For Shmucks?

Well, it is the Gateway to Oz.

(The new Oz movie is surprisingly decent, though 3 seats and goodies cost about $40.)

My youngest and I went and saw it in 3D. We both enjoyed it. I liked the way they stayed true to the original by filming in black and white while in Kansas and color in Oz. I’d recommend it.

Or an American red squirrel.

Incredibly rare these days.

Republican leadership to female voters: “The GOP has your back.”

Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress vote against anti-domestic violence legislation,

… the governor of Wisconsin repeals “equal pay for women” legislation,

… conservative pundits and politicians claim that men deserve higher pay for equal work because “men need the added income more than do women” or because “men know more stuff than do women”,

… Congressional GOP leadership vow to “kill ObamaCare”, including all of the components within the ACA that provide affordable preventative health care for women and children,

… Congressional and state Republican legislators strive to make affordable access to contraception and breast cancer screenings more difficult with their assault on PP and employee health insurance coverage,

… female state legislators are shunned and silenced for uttering the word “vagina” (gasp) during an abortion debate,

… GOP-controlled state legislatures mandate that women seeking an abortion provide social conservative politicians with “a womb with a view”,

… several Republican politicians utter a commonly-held view among conservatives that some rapes are inherently “rapier” than are other rapes, and that women won’t get pregnant from rape if they are REALLY being raped,

… previously, Paul Ryan advocated a federal ban on abortion, in-vitro fertilization, and most forms of birth control, as well as a national mandate on the forced ultrasound requirement for women.

Several Republican-controlled state governments enact or propose “personhood” legislation, which would not only outlaw ALL abortions but also the standard birth control pill.

And not to be outdone, Rand “Small Government” Paul steps up to the plate with his own effort to micromanage the medical affairs of women and sidestep the decision handed down by the SCOTUS in Roe vs. Wade.

Indeed, abortions performed in certified medical clinics must be banned, no matter the circumstances of the pregnancy. Because the GOP doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the rights and well-being of rape and incest victims.

Much better to have said procedure performed with a wire coat hanger in a back alley, or with a chemical coat hanger provided by a non-accredited physician in a dingy third world doctor’s office.

So much for the tea party/conservative movement’s mantra: “small, non-intrusive government”.

A key goal of numerous Republican-controlled state legislatures during 2013: A chicken in every pot and a spy-cam in every uterus.

American women to Republican Party: “WE will decide whether or not our rights are being assaulted by conservative policies, thank you very much.”
