The dangers of consolidating gun permitting into the DMV in the post-Tea Party era:

This week in Missouri, state legislators voted to cut funding for the state’s divers license bureau because it had been tasked in 2003 with also overseeing concealed-carry permits. The wife of state Rep. Kenneth Wilson explained – in the words of the Columbia Tribune – that the bureau “was part of a plot to impose United Nations policies in this country. ‘I have been doing some study on U.N. Agenda 21,’ Melissa Wilson… told the committee. ‘With this information going to the federal government, I feel that I will be a target. With Agenda 21, I will be someone who will be put on a watch list.’” She added that Agenda 21 is being pushed through in part because of a mass brainwashing known as the Delphi Technique.

Pretty much…poor spy just couldn’t catch a break.

Seeing as that was filmed almost entirely here in Nashville, I was having fun picking out places that I recognized, most of them in or around downtown; I saw Legislative Plaza, 16th Avenue South over by Belmont University and Music Row, the Woodland Street pedestrian bridge beside LP Field, and a good chunk of the Nashville skyline (slightly OOF to hide the fact that it was not PA, of course).

Speaking of pastries, assuming garlic bread sticks qualify, a friend and I did our Friday night out-to-dinner last night at Olive Garden. Her choice - I’d never actually been to one before. Waaaay overpriced and not very good but watching Buddy the dog eat chewy chunks of left-over bread stick today was about funny enough to make it worth it.

Heh, I can identify. My late husband was almost 14 years my senior. He gave me (well deserved) hell when I hit those milestones, like the first time I had to stretch my arm out to read something. To really piss him off, start plucking out his white chest hairs when he gets amorous.

My husband has 17 years on me. It’s a fun game to ID what he owns that’s older than me.

Oh, I completely understand. It’s the same for us. It doesn’t happen too often, because he looks fairly young and most people tend to overestimate my age, especially with him. So we look to be in our mid-30s together.

Russia had wiretap on Boston suspect, discussing jihad with mom

In early 2011, the Russian FSB internal security service intercepted a conversation between Tamerlan and his mother vaguely discussing jihad, according to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation with reporters.

The two discussed the possibility of Tamerlan going to Palestine, but he told his mother he didn’t speak the language there, according to the officials, who reviewed the information Russia shared with the U.S.

In a second call, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva spoke with a man in the Caucasus region of Russia who was under FBI investigation. Jacqueline Maguire, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Washington Field Office, where that investigation was based, declined to comment.

re: #102 Varek Raith

I’m not sure it’s even that. Russia is not really a democracy right now, in my estimation (Sergey, wherefore art thou, Sergey) or at least a deeply troubled one. They might not bother to tell us shit not because we’re their old enemy, but because they just don’t have any real strategic interest in doing so. It seems like they asked us to look into him but didn’t share their own info on him even when we asked. They might just not give a shit enough. It’s not like Japan or Germany where they’re a strong democracy and we have a lot of shared interests. I don’t think the Russian leaders and intelligence dudes— not average Russians, but the types that have flourished under Putin— care about US casualties at all.

No. They asked us to check him out but didn’t really tell us why. And hell, I’m being unfair, even this recording sounds pretty vague and insipid. But they still could have shared it with us.

Also, this is again some officials talking off the record because they’re not allowed to discuss it, so they’ve probably got a motive in revealing this too. They’re not supposed to talk about it, after all, and yet they are.

re: #104 allegro

I’m not sure. There are a couple factors to consider. The first thing that came to my mind is the Russians were asking the FBI to check on him. The FBI is a domestic organization and accepting information from Russian Intelligence about wiretaps might cross some legal lines. If the CIA (NSA or Other Government Agency) was doing the checking the wiretap info might not be a big deal.

re: #104 allegro

Didn’t I read somewhere that Russia did give us the info along with a request to check him out?

The Russians told us as little as possible about what they knew, while asking State for as much info as possible when Tamerlan took his trip to Russia in, what was it, 2009 or 2010?:

After receiving the narrow tip from Russia in March 2011, the FBI opened a preliminary investigation into Tamerlan and his mother. But the scope was extremely limited under the FBI’s internal procedures.

After a few months, they found no evidence Tamerlan or his mother were involved in terrorism.

The FBI asked Russia for more information. After hearing nothing, it closed the case in June 2011.

In the fall of 2011, the FSB contacted the CIA with the same information. Again the FBI asked Russia for more details and never heard back.

At that time, however, the CIA asked that Tamerlan’s and his mother’s name be entered into a massive U.S. terrorism database.

The CIA declined to comment Saturday.

Pamela Geller suggests that the Park51 people may have deliberately kept that airplane landing gear secret because they wanted it as a “gruesome” trophy.

Now they are finding more of the plane at the Ground Zero Mosque? Why now? Why wasn’t it turned over earlier? Did Gamal intend for it to be part of the mega-mosque he has once again resurrected? It is too gruesome to consider.

I refuse to blame the gin. Gin is tasty. Gin doesn’t do that to people.

In moderation gin doesn’t do that to people. Drink too much gin, and it can be quite damaging, including to the brain.

Most likely no one involved in the Park 51 project even knew it was there. It wasn’t in a visible place.

It was between the back of the building and the back of the building on the next street over. In a space barely wide enough for a person to squeeze into if they were skinny. In with a bunch of other trash.

No, they were keeping it there on purpose.

My Mom’s day yesterday: the hospice people were supposed to have the stuff to take care of my dad in the house by 9am yesterday, they showed up around noon. They then told her my dad’s prescriptions would be deliver to the house no later between 7 and 8pm last night. Still no sign of them at 9:30, We each called, plus our neighbor called, to track them down, and we called again at 10pm to see what progress was made and were told the pharmacy closed at 9pm and there was no chance they would be delivered till this morning, right around the time my Mom was supposed to be picking up my Dad. We called them back and arranged for the neighbor to sign for them in the morning. The delivery guy then showed up at my mom’s front door at 10:45 pm last night.

So no stress or anything there at all.

Adding to my earlier response, Kragar, make sure you are taking care of yourself through all of this.

My dad lost his father and then his mother in slightly over a year - Grandpa went from fine to passed away in less than 24 hours, and I’m not sure Grandma ever really recovered. Do NOT feel guilty about whatever time you take for this, and remember that your family is there for you too. I stayed with my dad after Grandma’s funeral (family obligations meant my mom and sisters couldn’t) and I was so glad that there was something I could do to help. I would have gone before, when it was clear we were just waiting, but he told me not to.

May I make a suggestion? It may sound silly and trivial, but your mom is buried under details right now, even if she doesn’t yet know it, and it’s going to get much more intense on every level. Get a small spiral notebook or the like and start recording information like phone numbers, insurance information, even their social security numbers, bank account and investment information… everything you can think of so it will all be in one place and she can jot down more as it comes.

The day my husband died (no preparation - he died suddenly in his sleep), a friend came over and saw me writing notes on bits of paper, lost and overwhelmed. She made me go find a notebook and get it all together. It was the best advice I have ever gotten. That little notebook was essential for the next year or more.

Hang in there - the ride will not be getting easier for a while. I know your mom is so very grateful for you and the rest of her supportive family.

this guy?

Since January 2007, Hovind has been serving a ten-year prison sentence after being convicted of 58 federal counts, including 12 tax offenses, one count of obstructing federal agents, and 45 counts of structuring cash transactions. He is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution at Berlin, New Hampshire

Before his recent stint as jailhouse bitch he was an influential member of the creationist misinformation brigade.

Late to the thread but I loved this film. I saw Steve Taylor in concert back in the early 1980’s if memory serves. He was a bit of of an anomaly - Christian punk(ish) artist with a great sense of humor.

He might try the truth, that we in the US can expect several minor leaks and spills, and at least one major spill, during the lifetime of this pipeline. That Canada wishes to gamble with our fresh water supply so that they can pipe their noxious sludge across our territory and to refineries that will sell their products in Europe and Asia.

And yet the Conservatives under Harper have a majority in Parliament.

In other words setting the bar at a majority of the popular vote is ridiculous.

As was the case for the right in the past, the left vote was split between too many parties.

…why did I make the idiotic mistake of reading someone’s account of having to let their kitty go? Even just like 3 paragraphs of it and now I’m tearing up already.

Both my current cats are “boomerangs” who were adopted and returned to the shelter. With the one that is sort of not surprising given she is a bit neurotic and has a few behaviors that will throw people off*. Why someone would return L.C. is odd, he’s very laid back. Perhaps someone wanting a lap cat, and he’s not one of those yet.

And neither of these cats understand “human territory space”. The table in the dining room is simply higher ground to them.

* - Puffin is a social lick-biter. Licks you as part of the social interaction and then decides to follow it up by biting (hard, but doesn’t break skin). Plus a few other behaviors regarding wanting to be watched eating; e.g. she comes and meows at me, leads me over to the food dish, and then eats. Regular bundle of nerves this cat.

I know this behavior. We have Problem Cat, who is either charming or horrible. He likes to eat hair.
