Glenn Beck’s Crazy Crypto-Racist Rant of the Day: Whites Lynched by KKK Would Be Tea Partiers Today

Why you so crazy?
Wingnuts • Views: 29,073

On his radio program today, Glenn Beck uncorked a bizarre rant about the NAACP and Martin Luther King and Booker T. Washington and by the way, 20 PERCENT OF KKK LYNCHINGS WERE OF WHITE PEOPLE! AND THEY’D BE TEA PARTIERS TODAY!

Beck’s strategy for defending himself against charges of racism seems to be to confuse the issues so thoroughly that nobody can figure out what the hell he’s trying to say. But yeah, he’s still a racist pig.

“They are a joke,” Beck said of the NAACP, calling them “an affront” to everything that Martin Luther King, Frederick Douglass, and Booker T. Washington stood for. “You are an affront to their memory. You really are.”

Somehow, that discussion then prompted Beck to declare that “20% of the lynchings [carried out] by the KKK were of white people … and you know what, I contend [that] the white people that were lynched are exactly the kind of people that would be in the Tea Party today.”

Glenn, buddy, the Tea Partiers of today would have been the ones grabbing the torches. These are people who cheer along when Rand Paul says that a private club should be allowed to legally tack “Whites Only” above its front door.

Well, actually, a private club should be able to do so. Public accommodations have to be non-discriminatory.

Well, actually, a private club should be able to do so. Public accommodations have to be non-discriminatory.

Private clubs can have exclusive criteria, but that criteria can’t simply be “no blacks.”

WHEN IS A PRIVATE CLUB NOT A ‘PRIVATE CLUB’?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 10, 2009

PHILADELPHIA - In the wake of allegations that the Valley Swim Club, a private membership club, sent away dozens of children from the Creative Steps Day Camp because they are African American, the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania explained, in response to media inquiries, that the Valley Swim Club is not exempt from anti-discrimination laws as a “private club.”

“The confusion comes from our everyday use of the term ‘private club,’” explained ACLU staff attorney Mary Catherine Roper. “Many people understand a ‘private club’ to be one that only members and their guests can use, but the phrase has a much more specific meaning under the civil rights laws.” To the ACLU’s knowledge, the Valley Swim Club has not claimed that it is a “private club” allowed to discriminate under the civil rights laws.

In order to be exempt from the civil rights laws, a “private” club must truly reserve its facilities for members, and must have genuinely exclusive membership criteria - a club that will admit anyone who is not African American does not qualify. Courts deciding whether a club is “private” in this sense will consider the history and purpose of the club (including whether it was created to circumvent desegregation), the club advertises for members, it is directly controlled by its members and operated solely for their benefit, and the club is operated for profit.

So what if 20% of the lynchings were of white people! Whites historically made up about 80% of the population, so if they were only one fifth of the victims, they were still hardly ever targeted. Blacks were overwhelmingly the victims of this violence.

I don’t know this for sure, but I would bet that white victims were typically criminals that vigilantes got hold of, or “suspect” ethnic groups——-Jews, Italians, Irish, Germans, Poles…———depending on the community doing the lynching.

I’m mixing various series here, but some cross between a Ferengi, a tribble and a Khan wannabe seems to be a better fit to Glenn Beck than any of the original main characters.

It is also not clear that conservative groups were being targeted by the IRS. They were looking at seemingly political groups that were requesting tax exemptions. Using the word “patriot” or “constitution” is something people of any political persuasion could have adopted——-he’ll, I’m a patriot and support the constitution but I’m a liberal. The point was to make sure that political organizations were not I properly filing for exemptions. The fact that many (most) of the new organizations seeking the exemptions happened to be conservative is neither here nor there. The IRS should make sure that the exemptions are not fraudulently,or mistakenly, utilized.

Reminds me of the funniest family cat incident I had growing up.

One of the cats was fat and a bit clumsy. We had a couch with a folded up ping pong table stored between the couch and the wall. A bookcase was up against the wall and next to the couch, but there was a gap between the ping pong table and the bookcase.

This cat was peering into this gap, slipped and fell into the gap, getting stuck in an ass over head position. All that could be seen from above was the lashing tail.

IMO, there is an element of inevitability to all of this. The tea partiers have a rabidly extreme anti-tax and anti-government agenda. For them, the IRS in particular is a boogyman. It would be strange indeed to give no extra scrutiny to their tax-exempt status, since fudging that would appear to be almost required by their stated ideology.

It is the kind of rational idea that should have been proposed at the civil service level in the IRS, and then (IMO) killed by IRS political appointees at the top who realize that some policies that can be rationally justified are not worth the political grief.
