Hong Kong Wants to Keep Edward Snowden as a Symbol of “China’s Growing Power”

Tonight, Chinese state newspaper Global Times is calling for Edward Snowden to remain in China: Snowden Extradition Would ‘Tarnish Hong Kong’s Image’, Says China State Media | South China Morning Post.

A state-backed Chinese newspaper on Monday said extraditing former spy Edward Snowden to the United States would be a “betrayal” of his trust and a “face-losing outcome” for Beijing.

The comments are among the strongest to be put forward by domestic media against extraditing Snowden, a former National Security Agency subcontractor who is hiding in Hong Kong.

The US has launched a criminal investigation into Snowden after he exposed a massive internet surveillance operation - including claims of hacking directed at China - amid tensions between Washington and Beijing over online espionage.

Beijing has been tightlipped on Snowden, with the foreign ministry saying last week it had “no information to offer”. But Chinese media have previously said Beijing should be governed by public opinion in refusing to send him back.

Monday’s Global Times editorial went into detail about the “face-losing outcome” for China if he was returned.

“Unlike a common criminal, Snowden did not hurt anybody. His ‘crime’ was that he blew the whistle on the US government’s violation of civil rights,” it said.

“Extraditing Snowden back to the US would not only be a betrayal of Snowden’s trust, but a disappointment for expectations around the world.

“The image of Hong Kong would be forever tarnished.”

The editorial also said that “Snowden believes in the democracy and freedom of Hong Kong”, adding: “China’s growing power is attracting people to seek asylum in China”.

FREEDOM AND LIBERTY!

Seriously, the irony in China portraying itself as some sort of rising symbol of freedom and liberty on the world stage is a might like North Korea portraying itself as the bread basket of the Far East.

The Chinese Communist Party has no sense of irony.

However, Global Times is not necessarily a mouthpiece of the rulers of the country. If an editorial saying the same thing appears on CCTV or in China Daily, then I’ll pay attention.

Could this perhaps be a trial balloon on the part of the government, seeing how the US will react?

Hong Kong (i.i., Beijing behind the scenes) will keep Snowdon there until he does not serve their needs anymore. RIght now, Snowdon is making the US government look bad, therefore he is serving their needs quite well. If played correctly, Snowdon could draw out his leaks/stolen info for quite a long period of time and end up residing in Hong Kong semi-permanently.

Keep in mind that HK is actually a great place to live (at least in the mid of this Urbanphile), and Snowdon could certainly make a living just off of speaking engagements alone.

IMHO, escaping to HK was actually a pretty smart move for him rather than a dumb or curious one.

I suspect the foreign ministry has a pretty clear idea how the US would react, because such discussions between Beijing and Washington have most likely already happened.

If Snowden really has stuff that China’s spy agencies did not already know, they’ll keep him long enough to extract that intel, then cut him loose. But I don’t think his revelations (at least, the ones that have been reported) are that earth-shattering. Really? The USA has hacked Chinese computer systems, and listened to Medvedev’ conversations? I am shocked, shocked, I say!

8 Cheechako  Sun, Jun 16, 2013 11:15:28pm

Now, if Wal Mart is a true, red-blooded, American company, they could just pick up the phone, call China, and tell them to send Snowden back to the USA or they would outsource their manufacturing to another country. Snowden would be on the first available flight to the US.

Money talks.

It’s too late to change all our used-to-be-secrets… but it’s not too late to take a second look at whether it’s really a good idea to have half a million low-level 20-something IT folks with all kinds of access to every goddamn thing.

This means pretty much nothing. Those papers are well known foe their anti-Western vitriol - and this opinion piece is tame in comparison. But what they do is set the actual politicians up to seem reasonable to the outside world.
The piece doesn’t suggest to me in the slightest that “Hong Kong” or China wants what the opinion piece suggests is the right course of action.
I’m totally with you with regards to this entire issue, Charles - except this. You seem to have fallen for a rather transparent ploy.

Now if only something could spook Snowden into trying to leave; then we’d see which country is the “biggest prison state on earth.” China will make it seem like he’s staying of his own free will… until he isn’t.

I’m sure the Chinese would love to pick Snowden’s brain. Unfortunately for him, he may not be able to bullshit his way out of their questions as he did Glennzilla who was just looking for a “scoop” anyway and obviously didn’t check Snowden’s background, as he was so intent on “exposing” the US govt and contributing to his bona fides as a glibertarian.

Grace University’s code of conduct for its students is strict: No kissing, no prolonged hugs and certainly no premarital sex. The school even monitors students’ television habits, forbidding HBO, MTV, Comedy Central and several other channels “because of the values they promote.” The rules are laid out in a student handbook and signed by students every year.

I am a Christian and have issues with this. There is little to be gained by trying to hide the world from people. Exposure and guidance is a far better route.

Following up on my Page from the other day, Apple has now released their data request numbers:

Like several other companies, we have asked the U.S. government for permission to report how many requests we receive related to national security and how we handle them. We have been authorized to share some of that data, and we are providing it here in the interest of transparency.

From December 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013, Apple received between 4,000 and 5,000 requests from U.S. law enforcement for customer data. Between 9,000 and 10,000 accounts or devices were specified in those requests, which came from federal, state and local authorities and included both criminal investigations and national security matters. The most common form of request comes from police investigating robberies and other crimes, searching for missing children, trying to locate a patient with Alzheimer’s disease, or hoping to prevent a suicide.

Regardless of the circumstances, our Legal team conducts an evaluation of each request and, only if appropriate, we retrieve and deliver the narrowest possible set of information to the authorities. In fact, from time to time when we see inconsistencies or inaccuracies in a request, we will refuse to fulfill it.

Eric Cantor: Obama trust dip ‘troubling’

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Monday called new poll numbers showing a decline in trust of President Barack Obama a “troubling” sign for the administration.

[…]

Cantor was responding to a new CNN poll out Monday that showed Americans’ belief in Obama’s honesty below 50 percent for the first time in his presidency.
Cantor said that it highlighted the importance of Congress.

“Congress’s role is oversight, and we are engaged in a very rigorous oversight of many of these agencies that have committed this violation of trust in the American people,” Cantor said, highlighting especially committee investigations of the IRS.

Is that the same Congress whose own popularity is at a record low?

Everyone this morning is trying to make something out of the CNN poll that asserts that the President’s approval took a nose dive.

Perhaps it did, though polling in the way it is done almost daily these days is a tool for distortion more than enlightenment.

The phenomenon we’re dealing with here is the same one drug addicts discover, when they have to increase dosage over time.

I propose, repeating myself here, is what we’re seeing is a knock-on effect of “ratings erosion”, about which the media industry (of all sorts) is quite concerned. More and more extreme programming and sensationalism is needed to counter how the media consumer can adapt quickly to the old levels of stimulation.

That’s what Detroit did when it had some big conference here. They hung up banners over the windows of the much vacated high-rises to make it look like lights were on.

Detroit breaks my heart. This is the largest city near where I am now and seeing its decline saddens me to no end.

Detroit needs a Mayor Daley (father or son…love them or hate them, they both did great things for Chicago) in a really big way.

When you agree to take a job without any benefits you are helping your employer put the companies who do provide their employees with good pay and benefits (and you would like to work for) out of business. Just like your employer, you have a cost to provide your services. If you are not making enough money to have health insurance, a retirement plan, a short term disability plan, savings for times of unemployment and savings to pay for the education of your children, you are selling your services below your costs. The term for people who work below their cost is a wage slaves. Never let anyone ever tell you that your skills are so poor you have to live in this paycheck to paycheck existence. All the money is going to the top.

Which means Roberts and Scalia joined Teh LeftTM.

ScotusBlog provides some handy dandy statistics to see who votes with who.

scotusblog.com

Thomas aligns with Scalia in 90% of the cases.

Roberts aligns with Thomas and Alito in 90% and 91% of the cases decided thus far (86% with Scalia).

Ginsberg aligns with Sotomayor and Kagan 95% of the time (highest concurrence).

Lowest amount of cases where justices align? Alito and Sotomayor - just 69% of the time.

In other words, despite splits ideologically, the court is in agreement more often than one would otherwise think. But when there are splits, the divisions run real deep and passions run real high.

Those numbers reflect where parties join in decision or concur in part.

The Guardian continues to give press to Snowden’s shenanigans; now purporting to have “documents” which show the UK spying on G20 participants. The Guardian only shows “fragments” of said “documents”.

GCHQ intercepted foreign politicians’ communications at G20 summits

Exclusive: phones were monitored and fake internet cafes set up to gather information from allies in London in 2009

guardian.co.uk

How would a low-level worker like Snowden have obtained such documents? Was he hacking into something he shouldn’t? And the Guardian still calls him a “whistle blower”?

Funny that this is released right after the last G20 in Moscow, and before the next G8, hosted by the UK at Lough Erne in Northern Ireland 17-18 June.

More from Snowden:

More detail on how direct NSA’s accesses are is coming, but in general, the reality is this: if an NSA, FBI, CIA, DIA, etc analyst has access to query raw SIGINT databases, they can enter and get results for anything they want. Phone number, email, user id, cell phone handset id (IMEI), and so on - it’s all the same. The restrictions against this are policy based, not technically based, and can change at any time.

This makes me wonder if Snowden circumvented restrictions and did a query himself of the SIGINT db. If he did, and succeeded in retrieving information, he and the NSA are in a world of trouble.

Snooping around foes and friends can help figure out if something is afoot that could pose a threat currently or into the future. Spying can reduce chances of an all-out conflict by enabling policymakers to have an idea of what’s going on inside the governments of other nations that isn’t public knowledge.

It can act as a stabilizing element in foreign relations.

But there are times when spying can be destabilizing, when intel isn’t solid, or revelations are so inflammatory that they can lead regimes to take steps to shore up their support domestically or abroad.

China is busy engaging in espionage. They’d be idiots not to. I’m sure they’re spying on the US, as well as Russia, India, and Japan (among others). They want to get their own intel sources, and not just rely on the news reports, which themselves can be biased and prone to error.

It’s idiotic to think that the US isn’t doing the same - and it would undermine US national security if the US wasn’t engaging in that to keep tabs on what China is doing - like say vis-a-vis North Korea. Knowing what they’re saying in private to North Korea could be hugely beneficial to the US in dealing with the North Korean nuclear threats and standoff with the South.

But to hear Snowden’s take, the US is somehow immoral or trampling on Americans’ rights?

And who the heck is going to take a $80k pay cut to work at the NSA, unless they have ulterior motives?

Next question, if he took the $80k cut, who was his prior employer and can we get a verification on that salary - since Snowden makes the claims, it’s easy to open that line of inquiry.

There isn’t a nation of any consequence that doesn’t have a spy establishment. Some are more electronic than others, but it’s part of being a nation-state.

Yet among the delayed-adulthood crowd that seems to be some giant revelation.

The young are typically idealistic, and these days it appears as if the media companies have discovered that the only way to make money is to appeal to the 17-24 y.o. market.

I am very sure each nation’s spy agency is aware that every other nations’ spy agencies are in fact spying on them. Maybe the actual details are unclear, but mutual spying is (I presume) acceptable even between allies. So, I am not so impressed by what Snowden et alia have revealed so far. He paints it as some kind of American effort to take over the world (muhahaha!), while it’s probably just SOP.

The VOA chimes right in:

Scandals Hit Obama’s Standing With US Voters

Controversies are taking a toll on U.S. President Barack Obama’s popularity with Americans, according to a public opinion poll published by CNN.

The data show Obama’s approval rating fell eight percentage points over the past month, to 45 percent. CNN said that is the lowest approval rating in a year and a half.

The poll follows revelations about government surveillance of Americans, unfair treatment of conservative groups by the tax agency, government snooping into reporters’ phone records, and questions about the way the administration handled an attack on a U.S. diplomatic facility in Libya.

[…]

To mix up those 4 rather unrelated things and to try and make a single complaint is something that NRO et. al. have been doing. Why is VOA following suit?

Can we conclude that the lame-duck status has kicked in by now?

Snowden, defending his assertion that he could tap anyone, anytime:

Yes, he stands by it. Only policy prevents NSA from tapping citizens’ communications … and policy can change …

More fundamentally, the “US Persons” protection in general is a distraction from the power and danger of this system. Suspicionless surveillance does not become okay simply because it’s only victimizing 95% of the world instead of 100%. Our founders did not write that “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all US Persons are created equal.”

So, basically, he is saying the USA has no right to listen in on anyone’s phone conversations, ever.

In a perfect world, I could agree with him. But there was that whole thing about planes flying into tall buildings I remember from a few years ago. It’s unquestionably clear that some people out there just don’t like us, and it would be wise to know about attacks before they happen.

Oh, I love this one:

Question:
Edward, there is rampant speculation, outpacing facts, that you have or will provide classified US information to the Chinese or other governments in exchange for asylum. Have/will you?

Answer:

This is a predictable smear that I anticipated before going public, as the US media has a knee-jerk “RED CHINA!” reaction to anything involving HK or the PRC, and is intended to distract from the issue of US government misconduct. Ask yourself: if I were a Chinese spy, why wouldn’t I have flown directly into Beijing? I could be living in a palace petting a phoenix by now.

If he were a spy, he wouldn’t be doing an effing Q&A on the Internet with the bloody Guardian. The question didn’t ask if he was a spy. It asked if he would be seeking asylum, and he didn’t answer it.

Virginia Gov. Uses Taxpayer Dollars To Pay For Detox Cleanses, Dry Cleaning

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and his wife used taxpayer dollars to pay for a variety of personal items and errands, the Washington Post reported Sunday.

Spending records obtained by the Post show that among the McDonnells’ personal expenses billed to the state are purchases of body wash, sunscreen, dog vitamins and a “detox cleanse” for the digestive system. State employees were also dispatched to pick up the family’s dry cleaning and tailoring.

I need someone to recap the Greenwald and the Snowden Affair for me.

The Guardian UK/Greenwald and the WaPo release stories within in minutes of one another claiming the NSA has unrestricted access to major tech companies, with the money quote being that they “can see your thoughts being formed in real time”, or some such. The program is called PRISM.

All of the major companies deny either hearing of the program or allowing direct access. While the scope of what the NSA is doing domestically is cause for debate, the reality turns out to be that they’re more restricted in both what they can request or use.

When this comes to light, the Post and Guardian semi-walk back the claims of direct access, while Greenwald sticks with his story.

The leaker turns out to be Edward Snowden, who skipped to Hong Kong a month ago. He is making claims that he had unfettered access to the nation’s security apparatus, insisting he could order a wiretap on Obama. Snowden then reveals “bombshells” like the US is cyber spying on China.

Snowden’s past employment history (high school dropout who in 9 years is powerful enough to spy on the POTUS) starts to come into question.

Did I miss anything?

I really think Mr. Snowden is so wrapped up in his ideals he hasn’t learned how the world works yet.

That’s obvious in the fact that he fled to China.

re: #276 Mattand

Snowden is a plant.

Watching Microsoft commit ritual sacrifice of their brand over the past month or so has been both hilarious and depressing. I can’t think of any other industry where the head of a division (Don Mattrick in this case) could even conceive of making a statement along the lines of “Don’t have Thing X that isn’t necessary for the functioning of our device in any way? Screw you, don’t buy it”.

This is the exact same death spiral Sony did when releasing the PS3. Talk about not learning from history.

If there’s a silver lining in any of this for MS, it’s that the PS3 actually has done fairly well. Stupidly, Sony let MS and Nintendo (who ambushed everyone with the Wii) get out front early, and never really caught up.

I think the XBox One is definitely interesting, and I wouldn’t count them out. But the $500 price point, the always-on Kinect, the restrictive DRM? Major league WTF.

And for the record, I think both new consoles are ugly. Particularly in light of the new Mac Pro, aka what if Darth Vader designed a PC?

As silly as the “get a second job to pay for your PS3” stuff was, it still wasn’t quite in the same league as Mattrick’s stuff this go-around. The PS3 was expensive as hell, but at least it worked when you shelled out that dosh. Mattrick’s “No internet? The 360 is for you” statement was a pretty blunt “Don’t buy our product” statement — Sony wanted you to buy the PS3 as long as you had the money for it, Microsoft wants you to have the money AND the connection before you can even consider it — to say nothing of consumer rights concerns.

Oh, I love this one:

If he were a spy, he wouldn’t be doing an effing Q&A on the Internet with the bloody Guardian. The question didn’t ask if he was a spy. It asked if he would be seeking asylum, and he didn’t answer it.

Obfuscation 101. That’s what he’s doing. Sounds like he’s gotten coaching from Greenwald and others to play spin with the Q&A, but that’s not surprising either.

The whole point of the Q&A isn’t to answer questions posed, but to get your message out.

The sum of his message is that the US government is bad, and Snowden is the person who made the determination that the intel gathered should be outed as well as identifying that the US is spying on other countries.

Final answer from Snowden:

“Thanks to everyone for their support, and remember that just because you are not the target of a surveillance program does not make it okay. The US Person / foreigner distinction is not a reasonable substitute for individualized suspicion, and is only applied to improve support for the program. This is the precise reason that NSA provides Congress with a special immunity to its surveillance.”

“individualized suspicion”? Is that from Ayn Rand? Or the Stalinist Soviets? And no, Congress is not immune from surveillance. If it were, none of the crooks would be caught.

Chinese Academy in Climate Change Uproar

Basically Bratbart publishes a story about how the Chinese Science Academy published a Hearland doc with their usual refrain of denial, claiming that the CSA translation implied endorsement.

However, that in turn forced the CSA to come right out and deny that, saying it was only translated to show example how some in the US don’t agree with the science.

Interesting. Snowden answered a “direct access” question:

guardian.co.uk

Anthony De Rosa
17 June 2013 2:18pm
1) Define in as much detail as you can what “direct access” means.

1) More detail on how direct NSA’s accesses are is coming, but in general, the reality is this: if an NSA, FBI, CIA, DIA, etc analyst has access to query raw SIGINT databases, they can enter and get results for anything they want. Phone number, email, user id, cell phone handset id (IMEI), and so on - it’s all the same. The restrictions against this are policy based, not technically based, and can change at any time. Additionally, audits are cursory, incomplete, and easily fooled by fake justifications. For at least GCHQ, the number of audited queries is only 5% of those performed.

Talk about moving the goal posts.

So he’s saying if an analyst breaks policy and is for some reason allowed to run queries directly on “raw” agency databases, they can have unfettered access to… and here he lists a bunch of metadata as his examples.

The “Direct Access” claim was never about directly accessing NSA metadata databases. It was a misread on the leaked PowerPoint slides that analysts had real-time, unfettered access to internet companies’ servers —

Greenwald:

“With this program, the NSA is able to reach directly into the servers of the participating companies and obtain both stored communications as well as perform real-time collection on targeted users.”

Snowden:

“They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type.”

Christ Matthews was hilarious this morning, saying something to the effect of, Look at this Snowden with his shaded glasses and fashion stubble…he’s all about becoming a celebrity.

Can’t remember his exact words, but it made me guffaw…GUFFAW I say!

EXACTLY.

“Direct access” to the servers for Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook, et al means that the government can plug into their servers and data mine at will, rule of law be damned.

If you put Snowden & Manning together in a cell, which one would request a move to solitary first?

387 lawhawk  Mon, Jun 17, 2013 10:59:48am

So, to recap. He claims that $200k job was his max salary at some point before taking the NSA contracting job through Booz Allen.

Easy to refute. Let’s see who the prior employers were who gave him such a salary as someone who had little more than a GED to his name.

Claims that he fully expected that people would make the Red China assertions. Well, Snowden did opt to make his presence known only after he arrived in Hong Kong where he’s hiding out. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his smarts though. But he also didn’t deny that he might be working on a deal with the Chinese government.

Making empty claims that the US government will off him (shades of paranoia, but when you’re this deep into spycraft and national security leaks, not unexpected). This will play well to the usual suspects.

He still thinks that he’s more free in Hong Kong and China than here in the US, which is, in a word - delusional, considering that the Chinese to this day continue to block any and all references to The Tienanmen Square massacre and violent and brutal crackdown against anyone expressing free speech rights thereafter.

Wasn’t that the premise of “The Handmaid’s Tale” written in the ‘80’s?

If This Goes On—(published 1940)

The story is set in a future theocratic American society, ruled by the latest in a series of fundamentalist Christian “Prophets.” The First Prophet was Nehemiah Scudder, a backwoods preacher turned President (elected in 2012), then dictator (no elections were held in 2016 or later).

Part of Robert Heinlein’s “Future History Series,’ in which he characterized this time period as “The Crazy Years.”

Are the graphic cards user replaceable? If Apple is going to release a semi-proprietary form-factor, they’d better have a better upgrade solution than selling 3 year old 5870s at $450.

Yes, replaceable and standard. Same with memory, storage and processor. Everything will be upgradeable as with every other tower Apple has built since the G3.
