RNC Chair Priebus: Don’t Worry, Bigots, the GOP Is Not Embracing “Tolerance”

Rebranding

Here’s Reince Priebus in an interview with the extreme religious right outfit CBN, dropping all the pretense and openly admitting that the RNC’s “rebranding” initiative was simply a scam.

Which, of course, was already blindingly obvious.

Speaking with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network posted today, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus confirmed that the party will try to reach out to groups like gays and lesbians by simply appearing to be more respectful without actually changing its views on issues such as marriage equality.

After Brody said conservative evangelical voters are nervous that the GOP thinks “we have to be more tolerant,” Priebus said there is nothing to worry about. “I don’t know if I’ve used the word ‘tolerance,’ I don’t really care for that word myself. I don’t have a problem with it, I just think it has another meaning politically that can go the other direction,” the party chairman said.

“It’s not what you say, I think, it’s sometimes - like our moms used to tell us - it’s how you say it. And I think that’s really the issue. And quite frankly, I think some of that has been overblown.”

Priebus assured Brody that the GOP will continue to represent “things that are very square with our beliefs as Christians” and recognize that “there’s only one sovereign God.”

So, let me get this straight - the RNC outreach consisted solely of no longer calling gays, women, blacks, and hispanics fags, feminazis, n*ggers, and wetbacks?

Ah, but which God is the correct sovereign God?

Also, I can’t possibly be the only person bothered by a political party openly choosing one correct religion. At least I hope not.

RNC outreach just meant finding newer buzzwords for each of them.

Honestly though, I am hopeful more and more daily that the GOP and like minded individuals on this issue are going to look just like the people who held up signs in the years of the civil rights era. I guess the worst that will happen then is we’ll see right wing nuts on Twitter of whatever claiming that they actually championed GLBT rights but I guess it will beat the demon crap we hear now.

I just had to fix that since it’s a funny pun and true. As to your question, it’s not even about Christians, it’s about a certain type of Christianity. Liberal Christians, Jews, etc need not apply.

It’s enough to make my mind self destruct. This kind of stuff should be parody or satire, not ACTUAL POLITICAL DISCOURSE.

Moderate types who still vote GOP these days, perhaps out of some belief that the GOP can be reformed from within, need to show some evidence that such reform is possible.

The best possible spur for reform is losing on an epic scale, which will not happen with enough severity if the sane GOP leaning voters continue to vote for this GOP.

They’ve got to cater to the last remaining bigots and bitter old white men, so they’re dropping all pretenses of having a big tent.

When you’ve got the RNC Chairman busy yakking away on TV that the GOP “… will continue to represent “things that are very square with our beliefs as Christians” and recognize that “there’s only one sovereign God.”“, that’s an indication that they are folding the big tent and looking to retain what few folks are still buying their nonsense.

They don’t want you if you’re not Christian (and yes, I know CBN is a Christian media network and this interview is largely to pander to the masses), but he’s going to have to reconcile this with his other statements - and knowing Rience, he’s going to make hash of it - if he apologizes or expands the value commitment he pisses off the Christians he’s courting, but if he tries to stick to just the “Christian” values, he’s going to piss off everyone else.

And there’s a growing number of “everyone else”.

He might be more correct than he knows. A lot of the mythology surrounding Jesus seems to be lifted from the Greeks, particularly the part about God becoming a man. You don’t see that happening in the Jewish scriptures, but it’s common in Greek mythology.

I’ve also read that the image of Jesus we all know (think John McNaughton) was just borrowed from Greek portrayals of Zeus.

It was lagging because Princess Dumbass of the Northwoods lost the 2008 election. Reince had to do something to get the religious bigots back on board.

Well that and RRR- rich religious right. What they’re doing stupid is totally alienating parts of the American electorate that are growing e.g. hispanics, young people(and by that I mean they’re ignoring issues important to young people), and single women. If Texas starts to become purple in presidential elections, it just may be time for them to totally start over as a party because without Texas, they’re totally fucked as a party. Their only real growth in formerly Democratic areas the past decade are in places like West Virginia that are old and losing populatoin.

I know Anti-Semitism was by no means unique to Germany in the 20th century but the fact that Neo-Nazisim is prevalent in areas of Europe that the NSADP wanted to exterminate is just fucked up. It’s a fucked up wonderful world we live in though.

Even more ironic? The ex-girlfriend I explained it to was part Polish, and she was about 60% sure she’d had a Jewish great-grandmother. Granted, she looked Germanic, but if she’d been asked about her lineage in, let’s say, 1942 - oh yeah, she’d be in a lot of trouble to put it mildly.

You know the Onion is going to have a great story about a powerless heir having his first powerless heir being born. I don’t dislike the Windsors but the obsession some of our fellow Americans have with them is just weird. William and Kate as I said sound like a nice couple and I wish them happiness on having their first child but other than that, it really is really bland news. I’d almost rather hear about Amanda Bynes being in trouble again so I can tell you oldsters :) about how I used to watch her on Nickeledeon as a kid. (God it was surreal seeing her at age 10 with Dr. Joyce Brothers the other night on All That)

Then I will wait to hear from the garage about whether the other car was emitting that odor because of some minor and inexpensive issue, or because the radiator fell out and I didn’t notice or something.
Then, maybe, I’ll have time to destroy civilization before I clean the bathrooms and vacuum.

Yes, it is an exciting life that flips off those social norms that keep things humming along for everyone.

We wouldn’t have gone through that anyway. This baby is third in line. When the Queen dies, Charles will be the heir, then William, then this child.

Of course, Charles could simply abdicate when the Queen dies and let his son take over. Charles is already in his 60’s and would be even older when ever QE2 finally keels over. Might as well let the son take over sooner.

Yeah, the Roma are pretty much hated universally.

Here’s there a lot of Vietnamese as a result of Cold War politics and “socialist solidarity” between the former communist Czechoslovakia and Vietnam. Many Vietnamese came here for technical training and what have you, and after the fall of communism, they just stayed.

Lots of Vietnamese still arrive every year as well; they’ve formed an impressive merchant class here, small business owners, etc. They usually own textile stores, convenience stores and small groceries. Their primary business strategy: staying open longer, having less expensive goods and being open on weekends and holidays when the Czechs typically close their stores.

I can buy things a lot cheaper at a Vietnamese-owned store than even IKEA.

IMO, it is factually incorrect to say that the US far right is presently fascist/neo-Nazi. There is a large difference between the US far right and fascists/Nazis at this point in time.

However, I also think it is fair to say that the observable trend at this time within the US far right is for these differences to decrease.

The US hard right embrace of historical revisionism, and their obvious search for a suitable scapegoat, seem to be the clearest danger signals to me.

The US hard right embrace of historical revisionism, and their obvious search for a suitable scapegoat, seem to be the clearest danger signals to me.

Oh I am not calling them fascist and neo-Nazi. I was just observing that they like the Nazis say absolutely hateful and vile things about those whose rights they wish to deny while claiming that those tehy’re seeking to deny are teh real hateful ones i.e. likening support of SSM to supporting slavery. The Nazis called the Jews oppressors too. I don’t think the American far right are Nazis. Just so that’s clear. I do think they engage in the same pattern of scapegoating though.

The oldest name on his chart is Rognvald:

Image: Viking-Norman_descent_of_the_British_royal_family.png

The House of Windsor was not royally descended form the Kings of England of old.

Yes - it’s actually the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, if I’m not mistaken. They changed it Windsor during WWI.

And I do believe that ‘Rognvald’ is where the modern name Ronald comes from.

They did and I believe George VI, Nicholas II, and Wilhelm were all first cousins. It’s kind of funny to me how we in the US equate incest and stuff with the rural and impoverished but Queen Victoria got that grandmother of Europe moniker for good reason.

So, yeah I find the monarchy hilariously outdated and even more hilarious an obsession with it by our fellow Americans but there’s some pity for them too. But then again, the perks would be nice. It’s enough to make my mind self destruct. This kind of stuff should be parody or satire, not ACTUAL POLITICAL DISCOURSE.

Understand I am not railroading all conservatives here, but I think there’s an enormous difference between actual conservatism and whatever the heck the GOP is peddling these days.

That statement and Priebus’ face need to be plastered on billboards all around the country.

Oh, I absolutely am railroading all ‘conservatives’. ‘Conservative’ is politician-ese for “I’m a Republican, but I’m embarrassed to be associated with Republicans, so let’s pretend I’m something else”.

It is not possible, unless one is a craven supplicant to the altar of Mammon, to square the idea of supporting fiscal conservatism so much that you’re willing to throw away the rights and civil liberties of your fellow citizens. There is no such thing as a “conservative” that wants the fiscal policy of the GOP but cannot support the agenda of social repression and theocracy. If it walks like a Republican, talks like a Republican, campaigns like a Republican and votes like a Republican, it’s a fucking Republican. No “conservative” I know has ever voted Democratic out of principle on the social front; to an individual they are willing to sacrifice civil rights if they can get a few more pennies out of the deal.

Fuck all of them.

He and pretty much everyone else believed he really, really needed a male heir to avoid the kind of dynastic war the England had just gotten out of with the death of Richard III and the ascension of Henry VII. That cooked Catherine of Aragon’s goose, after a girl and a bunch of stillborn boys, and when Anne Boleyn delivered a girl and a stillborn boy, well…..

thinking about it, though, i wonder - since h viii’s son edward was then followed by his daughters mary and then elizabeth, what would have happened if edward had never been born and h viii had died w only female heirs? wouldn’t mary have become queen like she did anyway?

Really, so what?

I’m just not getting all the vitriol I’m seeing on the blogs, twitter and Facebook about this.

It’s a baby. So what if it got born into privilege? It’s not the first one, won’t be the last. There are more celebrity babies born into more hoopla this this child. (Beyonce’s baby comes to mind…and then there’s that Palin nonsense…)

Personally, I like what I’ve been hearing about how Kate & William will be raising this child (and others as they may or may not come along) to a more “normal” childhood than royal children were raised before Diana stepped in to trying to normalize the childhoods of William and Harry, as compared to how Charles was raised.

Good for them, I say, and I hope it works out.

There’s more celebrity royalty that grifts off of their fans without paying anything back. At least Kate & William and some of the other British “royalty” do real work.

Yes, but it was not at all clear that a war might not have broken out, rather than allowing a woman to take the throne. Or that a woman might take the throne only to be perceived as so weak that others would vie for the throne. They were, after all, just out of the Middle Ages, and the War of the Roses took place despite a reasonably clear succession.

Jesus wasn’t a Christian, he was a Jew. Jesus believed that the world of man was about to end, to be replaced by God’s kingdom on earth ruled by the Son of Man. That’s why he emphasized his followers give away their earthly belongings, because they weren’t going to need them any more.

When none of his predictions came to pass, his followers chose to create a religion about Jesus, not continue to teach the religion of Jesus.

Limbaugh on white guilt: ‘It’s preposterous that Caucasians are blamed for slavery’

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Monday said that he was done with “white guilt” because white people had done more to end slavery “than any other race.”

“This, this white guilt, it’s time for all this white guilt to end,” Limbaugh told his listeners. “If any race of people should not have guilt about slavery, it’s Caucasians. The white race has probably had fewer slaves and for a briefer period of time than any other in the history of the world.”

“Now, sadly, we’re not talking about the rest of the world when the civil rights coalition gets ginned up. They’re talking about America and slavery,” he continued. “And that can’t be denied; it happened. But, compared to the kind of slavery that still exists in the rest of the world and has existed, by no means was it anywhere near the worst.”

Limbaugh went on to say that slaves were the “primary reason” that Arabs, “black Africans” and American Indians went to war.

Limbaugh is, of course, ignoring that modern European slavery innovated in two ways:

1. The use of race to demarcate slaves as inhuman or less-than-human, and thus to void existing societal norms about humane treatment and social justice.
2. The idea of cradle-to-grave slavery that was heritable across generations.

There a blushingly few parts of the world where slavery hasn’t been a part of “civilization,” but two above two features demarcate not only the unique quality of modern European slavery, but also the framework upon which other racist, exploitative systems (such as colonialism, Jim Crow, and most of the pseudo-intellectual assertions that form “race realism”) have persisted.

I can thank Ellis Peters’ “Brother Cadfael” mysteries for making me look it up.

I have all the Brother Cafael books…love them.

I’m usually all about the fun and frolicking, but for some reason the whole monarchy thing makes me curmudgeonly.

Well, sure, that’s why we went to war with them. I agree that it’s anachronistic and somewhat surreal, but, meh, it’s them not us.

“You despise me, don’t you.”

“I probably would, if I gave you any thought.”

It was the pictures of little Elizabeth helping recover victims in the bombed out rubble of WW2 London that gave me pause and to appreciate that the monarchy gave the Britons a sense of place in the world, a uniqueness that history has bequeathed.
