Russian Newspaper: Snowden Stayed at the Russian Consulate in Hong Kong

Russia was always the destination
World • Views: 30,984

The Washington Post has more details today on that Russian newspaper article we noted last night; according to Kommersant, Edward Snowden did more than contact the Russian embassy when he was in Hong Kong — he actually lived there for several days: Snowden Stayed at Russian Consulate While in Hong Kong, Report Says.

MOSCOW — Before American fugitive Edward Snowden arrived in Moscow in June — an arrival that Russian officials have said caught them by surprise — he spent several days living at the Russian Consulate in Hong Kong, a Moscow newspaper reported Monday.

The article in Kommersant, based on accounts from several unnamed sources, did not state clearly when Snowden decided to seek Russian help in leaving Hong Kong, where he was in hiding in order to evade arrest by U.S. authorities on charges that he leaked top-secret documents about U.S. surveillance programs.

The article also states that the reason Snowden didn’t go to Cuba was because Cuba said, “No way.”

Kommersant quoted unnamed Russian officials as saying the Cubans decided to refuse Snowden entry under U.S. pressure, leaving him stranded. That version stands in contrast to widespread speculation that the Russians never intended to let the former CIA employee travel onward.

And, more details on the Russia-Wikileaks connections in this mess:

The article implies that Snowden’s decision to seek Russian help came after he was joined in Hong Kong by Sarah Harrison, a WikiLeaks staffer who became his adviser and later flew to Moscow with him.

Harrison, the article suggests, had a role in the making the plans. The article noted a statement released by WikiLeaks on June 23, shortly after the Aeroflot flight left Chinese airspace, which said Snowden was heading to a destination where his safety could be guaranteed.

But Obama forced him to stay in the Russian Consulate, after he fled to the Peoples’ Republic of China!!

Any place that the FSB can “guarantee my safety” sounds, um, lovely.

Interesting little piece of trivia, the picture of the “white” boy on Patty Griffins “American Kid” album was actually a freed negro slave child.
There were lots of freed “negro” slaves after the Civil war, who looked just as white or whiter, with very little African ancestry at all. A lot were freed throughout the centuries, which is why so many whites have African slave ancestors, but don’t know it.

LOL Hope I didn’t confuse the hell out of y’all, I was talking about the Amazon featured album here.

From the Sarah Harrison profile this story links to:

articles.washingtonpost.com

Harrison would become the intense, 31-year-old emissary of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the mystery woman sent to spirit former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden from Hong Kong to Moscow, where she is now aiding his quest to evade U.S. authorities.

[A]ccording to two people with direct knowledge of the situation and who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Harrison and Assange became intimately involved. They cautioned that the relationship was not Harrison’s prime motivation in championing the WikiLeaks cause.

A short biography on the WikiLeaks Web site describes her as a member of the group’s “legal defence team.” But Harrison is not a lawyer and studied English while at Queen Mary, University of London.

By 2011, however, Harrison had risen through the WikiLeaks ranks, becoming what some describe as “Julian’s gatekeeper.” She stepped in for Assange to conduct at least one WikiLeaks news conference, coming off as good-natured and self-assured. In a conversation with two Washington Post reporters in February 2011 at the Frontline Club for journalists in London, Harrison, who was sitting with Assange at the time, appeared fiercely loyal, criticizing a media outlet she felt had betrayed his trust.

“She was at first in an incredibly vulnerable position, put in a job without any kind of mentoring, and then basically became Julian’s assistant,” said Heather Brooke, an American journalist who investigated WikiLeaks for her book “The Revolution Will Be Digitized.” “She is one of the cult of the faithful to Julian now, his gatekeeper, someone who ended up managing who did and didn’t get access.”

Vaughan Smith — who gave Assange refuge inside his sprawling English estate, Ellingham Hall, for 17 months while he fought a Swedish extradition order — recalled Harrison as deeply involved not only in WikiLeaks-related tasks, but also as a researcher on Assange’s legal case. Assange was fighting a request by Swedish authorities to question him on sexual assault allegations, which he has called a politically motivated smear campaign. Harrison, Smith said, quickly became part of a small group of WikiLeaks lieutenants who regularly strategized his defense from inside Smith’s country home, which Assange left in June 2012 to seek asylum.

re: #39 simoom

From Wikileaks’ Aug 1st statement:

wikileaks.org

Today, Thursday 1st August at 15:50 MSK, Edward Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia. He left Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow with WikiLeaks staffer and legal advisor Sarah Harrison who has accompanied him during his 39 day stay in the transit zone and continues to do so. Ms Harrison has remained with Mr Snowden at all times to protect his safety and security, including during his exit from Hong Kong. They departed from the airport together in a taxi and are headed to a secure, confidential place.

Mr Snowden and Ms Harrison have been staying in the airport for almost six weeks, having landed on an Aeroflot flight from Hong Kong on the 23rd June. They had been booked on a connecting flight the following day. Mr Snowden intended to request asylum in Latin America. However, after Mr Snowden’s departure was made public, the United States government canceled his passport, which rendered onward travel impossible.

From within the transit zone of the airport, Mr Snowden and Ms Harrison spent a number of weeks prior to his Russian application assessing the options available to him to ensure his future safety.

Ha!

But boy oh boy did it get us some web traffic. Which is why I, Meredith Artley, managing editor of CNN.com, put the story in our top spot. Those of us watching on Google Analytics saw the number of homepage visits skyrocket the second we put up that salacious image of Miley Cyrus dancing half nude on the VMA stage. But here’s where it gets great: We don’t just do a top story on the VMA performance and call it a day. No, no. We also throw in a slideshow called “Evolution of Miley,” which, for those of you who don’t know, is just a way for you to mindlessly click through 13 more photos of Miley Cyrus. And if we get 500,000 of you to do that, well, 500,000 multiplied by 13 means we can get 6.5 million page views on that slideshow alone. Throw in another slideshow titled “6 ‘don’t miss’ VMA moments,” and it’s starting to look like a pretty goddamned good Monday, numbers-wise. Also, there are two videos—one of the event and then some bullshit two-minute clip featuring our “entertainment experts” talking about the performance.

Never heard that

spud is a potato to me

But from the urban dictionary; several alternatives that would fit, especially the last one.

A particularly ineffective person, thing or action. Usually in the sporting arena but can be used for a variety of professions.

A boy, especially around ages 13-14, whose balls haven’t dropped yet. This phrase comes from the book “Spud”.

A guy who is a complete jack ass but in his own warped mind believes otherwise. A spud is thoroughly inept but is manipulative enough to advance in the workplace. A spud is a weasely and unscrupulous individual who will propagate misinformation and slander about others to promote himself in an orginazation.

Christ allmighty, what a whiny little bitch he’s become! I remember reading well-reasoned articles from him 8 or so years ago. I guess, like Miley Cyrus, fame has not been good for his psyche.

You know who is TEH MOAST pissed off at Miley right now?

Lady Gaga.

Because Miley just pushed Gaga’s “Shocking Song!” right off Teh Internets.

All I know is that Lady Gaga performed Something Shocking! but I don’t even know what it was because Miley grabbed all Teh Attentions and ran away.

Something with fake blood something something.

All we have is Will Smith’s family’s reaction, which everybody thinks is All About Miley.

You’ve got to love a mindless on-line game with lines like “Elder gods from the whole cosmos have awoken to taste your cookies”

O’Keefe claims “spud” is a racial term for the Irish?
Never heard that

spud is a potato to me

But from the urban dictionary; several alternatives that would fit, especially the last one.

Spud isn’t colloquial Irish for a pratie.

I agree with the many, many, many points made about Snowden, Assange and Greenwald. I certainly object to lionizing Assange and Greenwald in any way and I am grateful people are pointing out Assange’s insane political views. I will defer to Daniel Ellsburg’s view on Snowden because he, if anyone, has earned the right to make that call.

All that said I would like to also draw attention to what Charlie Pierce wrote today:

“I remind folks who get caught up in the vessel and miss what’s inside that, on November 3, 1986, there was an oddball story in an obscure Lebanese weekly newspaper called al-Shiraa about arms transfers in the Middle East. This story was flatly denied by everyone in this country — including President Ronald Reagan — and al Shiraa was treated as though it was being put out by two guys with a mimeograph machine in their mother’s basement. This, boys and girls, was how the Iran-Contra scandal began. The government “hit back.” It didn’t matter. The story remained the story. And, it could be argued, the country never really caught up with what al Shiraa reported.”

The story is not the vessel, it’s the contents.

Any minute now - “Edward Snowden isn’t the issue! He’s irrelevant!”

Took a little more than a minute, but sure enough.

The story is not the vessel, it’s the contents.

And the “contents” have been consistently distorted, exaggerated, and lied about from the very start, by “vessels” with a very clear anarchist agenda.

I think ‘anarchist’ is arguable, in that I don’t think Greenwald has anything like a coherent ideology. He wouldn’t be a libertarian, I think, if he weren’t in a position of privilege.

re: #207 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut

I’ve decided to refer to him as an anarchist, because Greenwald has no real apparent ideology at all - I’ve never seen him make a single constructive policy suggestion. His whole schtick is tearing things down — and his target is always the United States. He seems to be a pure anarchist for anarchy’s sake.

re: #208 Charles Johnson

Heh. I just have more respect for various forms of anarchism as ideologies than I do for Greenwald’s kneejerk contrarianism.

I wonder how many anarchists realize that Guy Fawkes, whose mask they have adopted as their symbol, was actually a Roman Catholic dominionist.
