The media know that the US public has an obsession with superficial gestures that arises from a total lack of understanding or interest in the deeper issues.
They are just doing their job, which is attracting viewers so they can sell advertising time more profitably.

I’m not sure that the cuts to education are at fault. MY personal view is that it goes back to Nixon and Agnew and the Southern Strategy. Consider that under Kennedy, we talked about having an Administration staffed by “The Best And The Brightest”, and by the end of that decade the Vice President was talking about ‘an effete corps of intellectual snobs’. The Southern Strategy is all about resentment, and for the ignorant boobs whose ancestors were duped into fighting a war so rich men could own black people, there’s nothing that stirs up as much resentment as someone who knows more than they do.
So, the GOP set about devaluing expertise, education, knowledge and critical thought. In the end, they managed to devalue reality itself.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that 7” by 30” was an option; I’ll only lose a little bit from the top because that doesn’t quite fit the proportion of the photo, but I can preserve most of it. They also do 12” by 36”, but that doesn’t work for this photo at all.
It’s not listed anywhere on their size listing though; I didn’t find it until I had it uploaded and was looking. It’s only $50 for the size I’m getting, which seems incredibly reasonable.

Perhaps one of the reasons I’m looking forward to the new Godzilla film is because thematically, it harkens back to the 1954 Japanese original. The idea of the Big G as a destructive force, not the friend of weird seven-year old kids named Ken wearing bizarre shorts. Mother Nature’s revenge, wrath of God, whatever you want to call it. Things like that make for great disaster films.

Good King Wenceslas looked out
on the feast of Stephen,
when the snow lay round about,
deep and crisp and even.
Brightly shone the moon that night,
though the frost was cruel,

Lucky you.
And since it’s due to atomics that Godzilla came out it will be America, and therefore… Obama’s fault!

I don’t think this time it’s necessarily atomic.
When I watched the trailer, I noticed that there a couple of scenes where characters appear in what seems to be either a nuclear plant, or perhaps some kind of research facility. In particular, there are two scenes with Juliette Binoche, one of which she’s wearing a respirator with mask, but not what I’d expect in a nuclear facility, and another with her and Bryan Cranston, where she seems to be being shut in to some kind of isolation or quarantine chamber. There’s also a scene with Ken Watanabe wearing what looks to be like some kind of biohazard suit. Perhaps some kind of bioengineering gone wrong?

I like them at that age as long as they belong to someone else and I can just enjoy pictures and the occasional 5 minute interaction.

The only problem is it involves selling your soul first.
Either that or all self-respect.
Well, I don’t know about my soul. RIght now it’s kind of tied up in escrow regarding this 3 cornered sale / lease back /sub-divide / rent to own scheme I entered into because of a hot blonde I knew in the day. Nobody is quite sure what it’s status is, looks like it may have also been bundled in (at least part of it) to form part of a “Salvation Backed Securities” instrument. (Yea, mine was definitely sub-prime)

I also want the power strip with the orange on/off button and the white label on the other cord pictured (the one not connected to the laptop). I would be ok with just a bunch of electrical cords in general, but I would really love these specific ones that are located behind my mother’s desk next to the air-conditioner (whose cord I also want).

Stone Circles! The Druids demand Stone Circles!
The Georgia Guidestones, “American Stonehenge,” is a granite monument in Elbert County, Georgia, USA. A message clearly conveying a set of ten guidelines is inscribed on the structure in eight modern languages, and a shorter message is inscribed at the top of the structure in four ancient languages’ scripts: Babylonian, Classical Greek, Sanskrit and Egyptian hieroglyphs.
There is no public record of who commissioned this structure.

Sounds like my nieces and nephews, sadly.
Of my parent’s 9 grandchildren, 4 are very likely to remain childless, based on age and/or lack of dating. 3 more are currently young men in their 20s, of whom 2 are On The Spectrum, which doesn’t mean they won’t date and/or find a wife, but it complicates it.
The remaining 2 have 2 of their own kids each, plus 1 of them has adopted 4 Ethiopian boys. Like my sister who’s thrice-divorced, she seems to be trying to bring us up to the national average!

Sorry…late to the thread with #208.
I was on a chat session with the techs at Comodo fighting to get a stupid logo into a store site I’ve been working on. The last tech did a decent job and found the problem I’ve been fighting for three days!!!
And all it was was three letter! Yes, three letters in the code for three days. And it was Comodo’s fault, they had an automatic code generator that put out the bad code and no other support person that was working with me in emails caught it.
Also, the entire site is PHP. They wanted me to put one section of code in the “header” and another bit in the “body”…if anyone knows code, there is no header and body in PHP code as in classic HTML.
I admit, I am new to it all, and don’t know it all. I always call myself a rank amateur. Certainly no Charles as far as his bang-up coding of this site. But, when I know more than a tech working as a tech supporter and he says “try it” I am left wondering WTF?
Since PHP and XHTML are being used together in many new sites and is the future, you would think a company like Comodo selling Site Security Licenses would be up on it?
Another day, another lesson…more hours that I can’t charge the client.
Sigh. Okay, I’m done bitching. Time to read to catch up with the Lizards.

re: #228 GeneJockey
I thought, “Too bloody right! When guys like him come into a store, most folks head for the checkout, or figure they didn’t really need anything!”
One million years ago, I worked at a place that offered various printing and binding services, some of which were DIY (think Kinkos, but this wasn’t Kinkos).
There was a very old guy known only as “Harold” who called himself a “preacher”, and often came in to photocopy his latest sermons. Harold’s primary trait was that he obviously didn’t believe in any sort of personal hygiene.
Trying to breathe in the vicinity of Harold was an act of strength as well as technique. The air around him was hot, dense, and greasy. It was like trying to inhale an entire bus. You had to resort to taking a big breath before you got within his area of effect, and hoping the oxygen would be enough to keep you from blacking out until you could once again retreat to a safe distance. In the cold months, he was very slightly less malodorous, but he compensated for it by having an eternally runny nose. He would frequently drip watery snot onto the plate glass of the copy machines.
Harold unknowingly became a force for good in the world one day when a particularly belligerent customer had decided that she was not going to be satisfied with anything under any circumstances, and because of that she was going to make all of her copies for free, whether we liked it or not. Well it just so happened that immediately after she started her enormous copy job, Harold lumbered in and chose the copier right next to Mean-ass Mildred. He loaded up his materials and pressed “START”. After a couple of minutes, Harold’s essence began to assert itself, as it always did. Soon enough, Grumpy Gladys came over to complain about Harold’s aroma. Much to my delight, the manager refused to ask Harold to leave, because he was a paying customer after all. Grumpy Gladys’ copy job finished several long minutes later, and she left without saying another word. I bet she still has scar tissue in her airway.

On the one hand, I sort of want to see some polling on how many Americans are in any way offended or hurt that Obama shook the hand of Castro (aside from the 27%ers, which are a given). My guess/hope is very, very few.
You know, pulling out reams of photos of Reagan and the Bushtards shaking hands with all kinds of vile people, and Bush kissing the cheek of one of his Ay-rab buddies, and then forcibly gluing those pictures to the eyelids of all these butthurt fucksticks, would probably be a good start. It would be better, though, if we made sure they were printed on sheets of aluminum about 7000 feet fucking high, so that those people could literally not ignore what was in front of them.
