They jumped on out of context snippets leaked from the book.

he’s obviously been tainted since he’s worked in the Dark One’s administration…..

The Republican purity purges will continue unabated until they burn a liberal at the stake in the name of Jeebus, after they riddle him with AK-47’s with the 30 bullet clips. They’ll justify it by saying that they were an atheist who was coming to take their guns and relocate them to a UN refugee camp where they would be taught Sharia Law.

Peggy Noonan will then write a column indicating that it’s good to see patriots exercising their second amendment privileges and Andrew Sullivan will reference David Brooks lauding our social progress by stating that at least the liberal was shot humanely.

A “devastating criticism” is probably a better characterization of Gates’ description of most Congress members.

“I saw most of Congress as uncivil, incompetent at fulfilling their basic constitutional responsibilities (such as timely appropriations), micromanagerial, parochial, hypocritical, egotistical, thin-skinned and prone to put self (and re-election) before country.”

Clearly the Obamadrones got to him and his family. This is yet more evidence of the stunning conspiracy to shout down criticism and alternate opinions of the President, and I for one don’t understand why the media isn’t covering this.

And don’t forget about water treatment plants. There is no telling what they are putting in the water. I’ve read that they have barrels of chemicals to make people passive and easy to control. They are under orders to put them in the water in the event that Obama decides to move against us.

re: #37 Snarknado!

Is this an argument against the NSA or against the “Christie for President” movement? If the latter, I agree.

I’m sure that president Obama isn’t ordering politically friendly NSA and FBI supporters to find damaging information against his political rivals. And I’m sure he isn’t even hinting that he is, even in a joking fashion, when he is engaged in important legislative negotiations. But somebody could. Chris Christie could. And I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Chris Christie, under political pressure, could easily order the surveillance of dissenters. And think about this: he is a former US Attorney, with friends throughout federal law enforcement. I’m sure most of them are as honest as the day is long. And I’m also sure there are a few who aren’t.

Finally, since the NSA cannot even point to any terrorist plots that have been successfully foiled with this massive collection, this little demonstration in political thuggishness up in New Jersey this week from the new chairman of the Republican Governors Association and an early favorite for the GOP presidential nomination should make even the supporters ask themselves whether or not these programs are really worth it. Just because the technology exists to keep this information doesn’t mean we should do it.

re: #37 Snarknado!

Is this an argument against the NSA or against the “Christie for President” movement? If the latter, I agree.

The problem is that the argument’s absurd. The entire structure of the NSA is designed so that no one person will ever have the power to direct its surveillance efforts. Even if Christie becomes President, the idea that he could just use the NSA like a personal spy agency is beyond ludicrous. It does not work that way.

My problem with Gates’ book is not the content so much as the timing. I find it distasteful, if not quite harmful to be commenting on private issues in Afghanistan while troops are still there.

The “revelation” that Obama “can’t stand” Karzai for example; no secret I am sure, but is this helpful in getting a SOFA? Just seems wrong for a Secretary of Defense to be engaged in such petty, gossipy things that could have an effect on the outcome. It is not helpful, that’s for sure.

I haven’t read the book. Only the excerpts that have been released to date. Did see part of his appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, and from the look of it, he had far more harsh things to say about Congress and the poisonous and acrimonious atmosphere there than any differences he may have had with White House officials.

There was quite a bit of candor, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had differences with the WH - Bush or Obama. I wasn’t surprised to hear it either. I wouldn’t want any Cabinet level person to be a yes man. I’d want them to have their own ideas and to honestly appraise the situation.

Gates may have thought the President wasn’t sure of his course of action in Afghanistan, and I’m sure that mirrored what a lot of people. Gates may have had a point that the President needed to do more than just sell that he was behind the decision than he did since he was putting 50,000 Americans into the firing line as part of the Afghan surge.

Gates took his job seriously and from the sound of it, he did a credible job despite the harsh conditions of trying to improve US safety/security in Iraq as part of a drawdown, as well as in Afghanistan.

I heard just how tough Gates had it trying to get MRAPs into service. Not surprising how problematic the appropriation and acquisitions process is. That’s one area that must change. We simply can’t afford to continue business as usual on that front.

But it’s no surprise pundits and media outlets are going to take snippets and blow them out of proportion or misrepresent what he had to say about his time as SecDef.

Also, he’s got the FBI. The FBI that actually does tons of domestic infiltration shit. It still boggles my mind that people are freaking out about the NSA when the FBI will actually send undercover agents to infiltrate your organization.

Absolutely - the FBI has far more intrusive powers than the NSA as far as US civilians go. But even there, the days when a president could direct the FBI to go dig up some dirt on a political opponent are long gone.

Brit Hume is a 70-year old man who looks 80 and sounds drunk. For fuck’s sake, he’s been “semi-retired” for 5 years now, and doesn’t even host his own show anymore. He just pops up now to add commentary to push the same Fox line he’s adhered to since day one. Point is, he and his ideas are old and less relevant with each day.

You’re not gonna get anywhere, except with southerners and the nursing home crowd, with complaints of America becoming “feminized.” It’s the bullshit Limbaugh rhetoric of old white guys who pine for the back of daddy’s sedan in the 1950’s. It’s a little bit like the term I heard growing up in the south, “Negrified”, as if something (schools, restaurants, college football) was getting ruined because blacks now were on equal footing with whites (in theory, at least).

re: #42 Charles Johnson

The problem is that the argument’s absurd. The entire structure of the NSA is designed so that no one person will ever have the power to direct its surveillance efforts. Even if Christie becomes President, the idea that he could just use the NSA like a personal spy agency is beyond ludicrous. It does not work that way.

I was thinking as much about the general powers of the office as the NSA in particular, but also, unscrupulous people are frighteningly good at finding unexpected ways to use and abuse powers, and the rest of us are always playing catchup.

(I’m not as sanguine as you about the harmlessness of the NSA, either.)

re: #16 Charles Johnson

Yup.

From Greenwald’s cryptome e-mail Q&A pdf:

(8) For me, “activism” is about effects and outcomes. Successful activism means successful outcomes, and that in turn takes resources. It’s very easy to maintain a perception of purity by remaining resource-starved and thus unable to really challenge large institutions in a comprehensive and sustained way. I know there are some people on the left who are so suspicious of anyone who is called “billionaire” that they think you’re fully and instantly guilty by virtue of any association with such a person.

That’s fine: there’s no arguing against that view, though I would hope they’d apply it consistently to everyone who takes funding from very rich people or who works with media outlets and organizations funded by rich people - including their friends and other journalists and groups they admire (or even themselves).

But I view it differently: I see resources as a thing needed to be exploited for a successful outcome, to effectively vindicate the political and journalistic values I believe in. And I’ve seen - particularly over the last six months - how vital serious resources are to doing something like this aggressively and without fear, and not allowing institutional constraints to impede what you want to do. At the end of the day, the choice we’re making is to make our form of journalism as potent and effective as it can be.

“Journalism” for Greenwald is all just a means to an end. The hundreds of thousands of stolen documents just a resource to be exploited in pursuit of that end.

The way some dudebros put it you are exactly right. The troublesome part of the matter is the kind of thing the Church committee found so long ago. Those lessons still matter. I have a more reasonable scenario.

President Future Conservative unleashes the NSA via the FBI onto a renewed war on drugs by a rationale like cartels are as big a threat as terrorists.

Or we take another big hit and the public again demands the President Do Something. With a few congressional meetings and the stroke of a pen it’s there.

We have a history of over reacting to a threat, real or just perceived and once or twice flat out invented. Our rough history backs a more cautious approach.

They’ll justify it by saying that they were an atheist who was coming to take their guns and relocate them to a UN refugee camp where they would be taught Sharia Law.

Target CEO defends 4-day wait to disclose massive data hack

cnbc.com

“Since Target’s original announcement that up to 40 million customer credit and debit card accounts had been hacked, critics have questioned why it took the retailer four days to come clean on the data breach.

“Now, for the first time since the security breach was announced on Dec. 19, Target Chairman and CEO Gregg Steinhafel is speaking out. While four days may seem like a long time for consumers to learn their sensitive account information was at risk, Steinhafel argued that it was lightning speed from Target’s perspective.

(snip)

“While Steinfhafel said the full extent of what transpired is not yet known, what Target does know is that malware was installed on the company’ point of sale registers. Target is working with law enforcement to try and determine who did it, and when and it was done. “

A very legitimate argument, to my eyes: if they had found in that time that it was possible to co-opt the hack without the perpetrators being aware, they might have been able to catch them and perhaps mitigate the damage.

Iran State media: Snowden Documents Proving “US-Alien-Hitler” Link Stun Russia

In Snowden’s own words, this report continues, he outlined to Greenwald the reason for his highly secretive group obtaining and releasing these documents by warning that that there “were actually two governments in the US, the one that was elected, and the other, secret regime, governing in the dark.”

As to who is running this “secret regime” Snowden and his cohorts were warning about, FSB experts in this report say, was confirmed this past weekend by former Canadian defense minister Paul Hellyer who was given access to all of Snowden’s documents by Russian intelligence services and stated they were, indeed, “accurate.”

Even though Defense Minister Hellyer’s exact statements to the FSB in regards to Snowden’s documents remain classified, shortly after his “extensive electronic interview” by the FSB he was allowed to appear on Russia Today’s program SophieCo this past fortnight where he shockingly admitted that aliens have “been visiting our planet for thousands of years” and described several types of these extraterrestrials, including “Tall Whites” who are working with the US Air Force in Nevada.

Snowden’s documents further confirm, this report says, the “Tall Whites” (Nordic) meetings in 1954 with US President Dwight D. Eisenhower where the “secret regime” currently ruling over America was established.

Most disturbingly, this FSB report warns, is that the “Tall White” agenda being implemented by the “secret regime” ruling the United States calls for the creation of a global electronic surveillance system meant to hide all true information about their presence here on earth as they enter into what one of Snowden’s documents calls the “final phase” of their end plan for total assimilation and world rule.

Unbeknownst to the FSB, this report confirms, are those still in the US government backing Snowden, but whose presence Russian intelligence experts note is “unmistakable” and shows a cataclysmic power struggle is currently underway against this “secret regime” now headed by Obama by “forces unknown.”

Most to be feared by Russian policy makers and authorities, this report concludes, is if those opposing the “Tall White” “secret regime” ruled over by Obama have themselves aligned with another alien-extraterrestrial power themselves.

Heh, Sounds a bit like Oliver Stone.

It’s almost like the telephone game. One person says they were not really all that positive for the president based on a few small quotes they saw released. But if you aren’t into her, or her show, she will say that it’s your problem, and to me, that comes rather close to bullying to make you see her point. It’s sort of like, hit me over the head with a hammer so I’ll want to watch.

However I don’t see ignoring her as a problem at all. I have never seen that show, and don’t particularly want to if a 27 yr old is going to be going around naked a lot of the time, as I have heard. Why would I want to see that? Is it part of the story line or something? Nothing wrong with nudity, but it’s rather impractical if you’re going to be going out anywhere. If it’s just going to be used for purposes of angst and/or voyeurism, or just plain “showing off”, forget about it. I mean, it’s not like I really want to get intimate with her or anything. Maybe if she left something to the imagination and there was a little more respect for the audience, instead of just attitude…

I think the whole thing is a great example of the overly politicized point that Gates made. Those last week who were outraged about the Gates quotes criticizing Obama labeled Gates a wingnut, a traitor, a criminal (because of Iran Contra) and claimed he had no credibility at all. Today, upon learning that the quotes were out of context (or a least there’s more to the story), the same people hail him as a hero and patriot because the quotes now fit the political agenda.
Nothing has changed. Gates is still himself, his opinions haven’t changed, he’s still the same person but he becomes a new hero to some and a new villain to others but nothing in reality has actually changed. Very few people will actually read his book or care what he says unless it furthers their agenda.

Yes it’s part of the story line… there’s a lot of sex, and the dialogue in the sex scenes is well-written enough that those scenes aren’t “only” about sex… and apparently it’s feminist and empowering and some fancy academic word I can’t remember that shlubby-looking overweight people with bad haircuts and bad makeup (and ugly clothes when they’re dressed) should be totally comfortable with their bodies and confident and secure and have satisfying sex lives. Or something. (even while everything else about their lives is anything but satisfying. And her boyfriend’s kind of an asshole, so the sex is the only good thing about the relationship. It happens to all of us. This is how the press manipulates the public, they do it because we fall for it most of the time. Salacious headlines of a few scandalous soundbites to generate partisan traffic about discord in the White House, now they switch to “gates loves Obama” to generate more partisan traffic. They manufactured a lot news and headlines out of the Gates book and hardly noticed any of the interesting content about how the White House functions or what’s really going on in the world.

re: #259 Killgore Trout

It happens to all of us. This is how the press manipulates the public, they do it because we fall for it most of the time. Salacious headlines of a few scandalous soundbites to generate partisan traffic about discord in the White House, now they switch to “gates loves Obama” to generate more partisan traffic. They manufactured a lot news and headlines out of the Gates book and hardly noticed any of the interesting content about how the White House functions or what’s really going on in the world.

And when someone tries to get beyond that—like Rachel Maddow, doing actual in-depth reporting and often demystifying things and showing a reasonable take, they get derided by contrarian morons who need to believe in a ‘truth lies somewhere in the middle’ philosophy for a variety of idiotic reasons. There are some people for whom anyone displaying an honest partisan affiliation are somehow automatically just shills. Black and white thinking used to criticize supposed black and white thinking, without a hint of irony.

Without the censorship we grew up with. These shows (I’m totally into Shameless on Showtime) are more to the truth than we’ve ever seen on the small screen.

There is another option. Downton Abbey. Check your local PBS listings. It is much better than watching a bunch of “shlubby-looking overweight people.” Keep in mind that Julian Fellowes writes very well and Maggie Smith delivers her “zingers” with style.

OK, what’s the agenda here? Why is this group almost duplicating the task force assigned by the WH to study the issue of meta data collection?

The “New America Foundation”, which did the “study” was founded by anointed dudebro, Ted Halstead. Ted Who?

Exactly. A real leader should seek out and give weight to dissenting opinions and thoughts when forming a policy. To do otherwise is to live in an echo chamber. It was my understanding that was part of Obama’s leadership style, decision making practice.

There is a term for a leader surrounded by yes men and the horrible results that emanate from them: incestuous amplification.

re: #258 sagehen

There aren’t any nice people in this show. That’s what makes it funny. Like the Seinfeld people, but younger and less attractive.)

OK, if I want to observe The Millennial in his or her natural habitat, I have 2 grandchildren that I can get some insight from, I suppose.

I know both have had, and continue to have, sex, because they each have a child to prove it. I don’t need to watch them in the act or running around naked either, thanks. So why would I want to watch it on TV?

re: #191 Feline Fearless Leader

Hmm. Could be cold and dark of winter. However, any chance that there’s something like carbon monoxide or another chemical building up due to rooms being sealed and furnace or heaters running a lot?

good thoughts, we have a carbon monoxide detector and the doors are open often enough because of the dogs, we have a weird heating system —runs off the hot water heater. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.

First off, I see that DF spanked you with the diff between a clip and a magazine…good thing, because I would have overlooked it.

Second, they’d never use a Soviet-designed weapon like a Kalashnikov, would they? I realize that the right is perhaps on better terms with Russia than with the rest of the US right now, but I’m pretty sure they’d still want to be thought of as ‘All-American’, so it almost has to be an M-16 or an M-4 Carbine they’re using to riddle their enemies with bullets, dunnit? :-P

You can now drag and drop up to five images at once into the comment posting box for uploading. When it’s finished uploading all of them it steps through each one and lets you add a caption, tweet it, insert the code into the comment, or cancel. When the comment is posted, the multiple images are all automagically turned into a slideshow when you click on any of them.

Very Kewl Kitteh Family

Those are big kittehs!

Lions will always be a prominent feature on Zooborns. The cubs look cute and the antics fun, the adults are photogenic, and lions are the felines where the male plays a role in protecting and raising the young.

Isn’t that contribution enough for Ryan?
