Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better. But average wages have barely budged. Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled. The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by - let alone get ahead. And too many still aren’t working at all.Our job is to reverse these trends. It won’t happen right away, and we won’t agree on everything. But what I offer tonight is a set of concrete, practical proposals to speed up growth, strengthen the middle class, and build new ladders of opportunity into the middle class. Some require Congressional action, and I’m eager to work with all of you. But America does not stand still - and neither will I. So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that’s what I’m going to do.

We know that the nation that goes all-in on innovation today will own the global economy tomorrow. This is an edge America cannot surrender. Federally-funded research helped lead to the ideas and inventions behind Google and smartphones. That’s why Congress should undo the damage done by last year’s cuts to basic research so we can unleash the next great American discovery - whether it’s vaccines that stay ahead of drug-resistant bacteria, or paper-thin material that’s stronger than steel. And let’s pass a patent reform bill that allows our businesses to stay focused on innovation, not costly, needless litigation.
The anti-Science GOP will go for this? Really? They are going full-metal creationist in science classrooms across the country. How’s that going to improve our competitiveness in the future when we’re handicapping our students now by pushing nonsensical concepts into science classrooms.

Glenn Greenwald will be furious. He hasn’t said a word about Edward.
What’s going to bake Greenwald’s noodle is that the President goes ahead and talks about reforming the intel gathering apparatus, but then not only talks about how important it is to defending US interests, but then segues into a discussion of how that helps the US deal with Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile and then the Palestinian-Israel peace talks.
It’s a trifecta that would drive him nuts.

That’s why, tomorrow, I will direct the Treasury to create a new way for working Americans to start their own retirement savings: MyRA. It’s a new savings bond that encourages folks to build a nest egg. MyRA guarantees a decent return with no risk of losing what you put in. And if this Congress wants to help, work with me to fix an upside-down tax code that gives big tax breaks to help the wealthy save, but does little to nothing for middle-class Americans. Offer every American access to an automatic IRA on the job, so they can save at work just like everyone in this chamber can.

President Obama. Here’s my boom stick:
Now, I don’t expect to convince my Republican friends on the merits of this law. But I know that the American people aren’t interested in refighting old battles. So again, if you have specific plans to cut costs, cover more people, and increase choice - tell America what you’d do differently. Let’s see if the numbers add up. But let’s not have another forty-something votes to repeal a law that’s already helping millions of Americans like Amanda.
The first forty were plenty.
We all owe it to the American people to say what we’re for, not just what we’re against. And if you want to know the real impact this law is having, just talk to Governor Steve Beshear of Kentucky, who’s here tonight. Kentucky’s not the most liberal part of the country, but he’s like a man possessed when it comes to covering his commonwealth’s families. “They are our friends and neighbors,” he said. “They are people we shop and go to church with…farmers out on the tractors…grocery clerks…they are people who go to work every morning praying they don’t get sick. No one deserves to live that way.” Steve’s right.

Like, you do understand that this is part of it, right? It’s not just “oh, our salary is less,” it’s that even when the job description is exactly the same, the salary is less.
Simply putting up the median salary says *nothing* because it includes nothing about job titles, distribution of people in those positions, none of the information required to actually evaluate this.
You should be better than that.

Half true.
In the broadest sense, the Romney campaign is on solid ground when it says that “women in Barack Obama’s White House are earning less than men.” But the closer you look at the data, the less striking this conclusion becomes.
First, the Obama White House has more equitable pay rates than the economy as a whole. And second, when you look at employees who have the same titles, only a small fraction of women are out-earned by men, a difference that might be explainable by differences in experience and longevity rather than discrimination. The statement is accurate but needs clarification or additional information, so we rate it Half True.

Mike Lee’s teabagger response is truly bizarre. Check out this excerpt. He is agreeing inequality is a problem. But disagrees about its form and origins.
But where does this new inequality come from? From government - every time it takes rights and opportunities away from the American people and gives them instead to politicians, bureaucrats, and special interests.
Inequality - real inequality - is trapping poor children in failing schools to benefit bureaucrats and union bosses. It’s penalizing low-income parents for getting married, or getting better jobs.
It’s guaranteeing insurance companies taxpayer bailouts if Obamacare cuts into their profits.
Inequality is blocking thousands of middle-class jobs in the energy industry as a favor to partisan donors and radical environmental activists.
Inequality is denying viable, unborn children any protection under the law, while exempting unsanitary, late-term abortion clinics from basic safety standards.
It’s denying citizens their right to define marriage in their states as traditionally or as broadly as their diverse values dictate.
It’s the federal government hurting rural communities, especially in the west, by controlling and mismanaging public lands.
It’s changing laws without congressional approval, and spying on American citizens without constitutional authority.
And of course, Obamacare - all by itself - is an inequality Godzilla that has robbed working families of their insurance, their doctors, their wages and their jobs. Many Americans are now seeing why some of us fought so hard to stop this train-wreck over the last four years.
Government-driven inequality is the reason why, as hard-working families across the country struggle to make ends meet, six of the ten wealthiest counties in America are now suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Well, that’s…good? Kinda scary since they’re mostly nuts. Calm before the storm.
I do think they’re doing talking points, though. Tomorrow we’ll hear the same shit regurgitated by every GOPer on the morning circuit.

Two points…and I am out. It’s been a very trying day due to work/career issues. So, if any of my comments tonight were too snarky, please forgive me.
Overall there should be no problem with anyone asking members here to stay classy. The general tone of the board is probably what attracted many to the site. However we should all wish that the same could be asked of the politicians. Ask yourselves if the politicians you support is capable of staying classy. We have seen a lot of classless comments over the years of Obama’s presidency. Just reflect back on some of them, and the next time you hear them spout off something out of bounds write them and ask them to stay classy too. They are supposed to be a cut above us.
This is a political blog correct? Why would you not want to listen to the President make a speech like this? Even if you don’t like him, you would think as a political junky you’d want to give him that little bit of time so that you could discuss why you agree or disagree with what he said. We are all in this together.
Good evening all, it was fun following along with you all this night.

I believe I’ve heard it applied homophobically. It doesn’t apply, in any event. I’m neither gay nor young.

re: #378 NJDhockeyfan
You’re a sub-Jim Hoft level tool, reflexively cutting and pasting without actually thinking about things like facts or context.
Probably didn’t occur to you that: (a) those numbers are much closer to equal pay than the private sector at large; or (b) that those numbers are an improvement over previous administrations; or c) that the disparity is not because the WH is pulling a cost saving measure by screwing women workers, rather that the disparity is the result of comparing apples to oranges, i.e., people with different jobs in the WH.
Name a president who’s done more for women’s rights than Obama. I’ll wait, but try to do something besides cut, copy and paste. You’re not even very good at that.

If every one of Obama’s speeches were televised, we wouldn’t have the “Obama doesn’t talk about X” complaints, where X is everything that matters to the country, because he’s talked about it.

Even if it’s not a slur, it’s a very specific word for a type of young gay man. Why would you even go there? Sounds like you got pissed off and then threw a low blow.
“Twink” is clearly irrelevant to the discussion. And totally undercuts any authority you imagine yourself having over the “tone” and decency of comments on this board.

re: #526 austin_blue
I’ve tried making similar comments to my fellow conservatives, with similar results.
From time to time I quote Ben Franklin’s remark that at some point a people deteriorates to the point at which despotic government is the only recourse. It’s in his speech to the Constitutional Convention. The link is easy to google…sorry, I’m off to bed with a bad cold.
