So, I’m wondering how Noah got all the different versions (European, African, Asian) of human lactase persistence mutations on the ark….
Genetic Data Suggests Convergent Evolution for Milk Digestion
An international team of scientists led by Alessia Ranciaro and Sarah Tishkoff of the University of Pennsylvania has investigated the genetic origins of lactose tolerance in geographically diverse populations of Africans in Kenya, Tanzania, and Sudan. The scientists collected blood samples from pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, agriculturalists, and hunter-gatherers, who also took a lactose test by fasting overnight, having their blood sugar measured, drinking a sweet beverage containing a high level of lactose, and then having their blood sugar tested at set intervals. The research team found that the geographic patterns in which a genetic variant for milk digestion were present often correlated with historic human migrations and the spread of domestic cattle, camels, and sheep. “Our results are showing different mutations arising in different places that are under selection and rising to high frequencies and then reintroduced by migration to new areas and new populations,” Tishkoff told Science Daily. She suspects that there are other genetic variants for the digestion of milk that have not yet been discovered, and that commensal bacteria in the gut could also help adult humans digest milk.
See:
Genetic Origins of Lactase Persistence and the Spread of Pastoralism in Africa
In humans, the ability to digest lactose, the sugar in milk, declines after weaning because of decreasing levels of the enzyme lactase-phlorizin hydrolase, encoded by LCT. However, some individuals maintain high enzyme amounts and are able to digest lactose into adulthood (i.e., they have the lactase-persistence [LP] trait). It is thought that selection has played a major role in maintaining this genetically determined phenotypic trait in different human populations that practice pastoralism. To identify variants associated with the LP trait and to study its evolutionary history in Africa, we sequenced MCM6 introns 9 and 13 and 𢏂 kb of the LCT promoter region in 819 individuals from 63 African populations and in 154 non-Africans from nine populations. We also genotyped four microsatellites in an 𢏁98 kb region in a subset of 252 individuals to reconstruct the origin and spread of LP-associated variants in Africa. Additionally, we examined the association between LP and genetic variability at candidate regulatory regions in 513 individuals from eastern Africa. Our analyses confirmed the association between the LP trait and three common variants in intron 13 (C-14010, G-13907, and G-13915). Furthermore, we identified two additional LP-associated SNPs in intron 13 and the promoter region (G-12962 and T-956, respectively). Using neutrality tests based on the allele frequency spectrum and long-range linkage disequilibrium, we detected strong signatures of recent positive selection in eastern African populations and the Fulani from central Africa. In addition, haplotype analysis supported an eastern African origin of the C-14010 LP-associated mutation in southern Africa.

Stop worrying so much, Frank, we’ve already got the answer to hand. Voltrons have relatively poor radar, so we can counter them by restarting F-22 production and accelerating F-35 production. Granted we’ll have to dismantle some social programs to find the money, but Voltrons are enough of a threat that Grover Norquist will allow a 1% increase in taxes make up some of the costs.

Obama Confidante’s ‘Screaming Siren’: Dems Could Face Another 2010
I’m really not sure how I feel about these kinds of stories. Part of me thinks it’s a bit of Chicken Little and a bit of typical pundit bloviating.
Part of me wants to believe Americans aren’t stupid enough to give more control of the government to the GOP, after all of the damage they’ve been causing since Scary Black Man took over the White House*.
Part of me also knows these are basically the same people who looked at Gore vs Bush and said “Sure, Gore was VP during one of the biggest economic booms in our country’s history.
“But we’re mad at Clinton for being a horn dog, so let’s vote in the rich wannabe cowboy who’s barely worked a day in his life. What could possibly go wrong?”
Honestly, if people vote to give Republicans majorities in both the House and Senate in October, there’s just no hope for this country.
And that rests solely on the American voting public having the collective long term memory of a fucking house fly.
*Yes, the modern GOP is driven in part by barely concealed racism. Deal with it.

Farah described what he learned about Wilson and his beliefs from the call:
Wilson claimed he can’t be sued because he’s not running the race on public roads in the United States, he’s running the race on public roads in America.
The United States only exists in the District of Columbia, and everything else is “America,” so the rest of the country isn’t covered by statutory regulations affecting “The United States.”
He can’t be sued or held liable for anything non-violent because he refuses to acknowledge the existence of anyone that would sue him. He also claims he can’t get tickets, and doesn’t pay any taxes. This, presumably, is also why he thinks it’s okay to violate Brock Yates’s Copyright on the term “Cannonball.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says Vice President Joe Biden will travel next week to Poland and Lithuania amid tensions in nearby Ukraine.
(snip)
“Biden will depart on Monday. That’s the day after a planned vote in Crimea about whether to split off from Ukraine and possibly join Russia. The U.S. says the vote shouldn’t take place.
“Biden will meet with Poland’s president and prime minister, plus the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The White House says the leaders plan to discuss ways to support Ukraine’s sovereignty. They’ll also discuss the defense commitments that NATO allies have to one another.”

FWIW, last night the iPad Mini my boss gave me for Xmas suddenly started freaking out when I tried to watch The Rachel Maddow Show using Chrome. It started to load the page, then suddenly rebooted itself, got past the Apple logo, got stuck on the spinner for several minutes, then flashed a BSOD (I didn’t even know Apple devices had one), and rebooted again. It went on & on like that in a loop no matter how many times I did the hard reset Frank mentioned.
I ended up having to restore it to its factory settings using iTunes, which was a PITA because it meant I had to reinstall all my apps and redo all my settings & other customizations (I’m still not done).
Right before I tried to watch Maddow I’d noticed there were app updates and I hit “Update All” without really paying attention, so it’s possible the problem could’ve been related to the iOS update (which I didn’t realize was going to happen till I also checked my iPod Touch).

What I ended up doing to fix that problem by the way, is this:

The code just checks to make sure the global twttr object has been created before trying to call the twttr.widgets.load() method to render embedded tweets. If no twttr object exists it just skips the call and the tweet displays as a plain text blockquote.

Last Sunday the Village Voice published an amusing article about the right-wing’s “Obama is weak” meme (emphasis added):
Rightbloggers Find the Real Issue in Ukraine: Obama’s a Sissy
We’ve had about a week of Crisis in the Crimea, as crypto-Russian troops patrol the streets of Sevastopol, Kiev digs in, and Obama and the EU try a strategy of diplomatic “de-escalation.” There’s some disagreement among observers as to how this will play out.
Among rightbloggers, though, while there is some diversity of opinion as to how big a badass Vladimir Putin is, there is great consensus on the conclusion that Russia is in Ukraine because Obama is a sissy.
At this writing Putin remains intransigent and Obama plans to meet with the Ukraine interim prime minister on Wednesday.
This may go on awhile, so let us stipulate that despite all the argh-blargh over the issue, almost no one on either side has proposed that the U.S. invade the Crimea or even threaten. Yet conservatives suggest that Obama’s failure to do something butch is the reason for the crisis. […]

Oh, I’m sure they’re out there. It’s just that I haven’t seen any of them up until now. Probably easier for them to burrow through the snow than to try to run along on top of it.

That’ll teach me to skim over a story like that…
Heh, we all do it from time to time. Joseph is always the first person I think of when I hear the name Farah (usually immediately followed by the exiled former Shah’s last wife).

Gah! *grabs throat, makes gagging noises*
One of my half-sisters used to say the same thing. She’d pick up puppies and hold their mouths right up to her nose.

On the topic of cute animals, I saw my first bunneh of the spring this morning. It was crossing the road. I had the passing thought that stew would be delicious for dinner. Hippity hoppity, Easter’s on its way…
That reminds me of one of my all-time favorite Easter Bunny cartoons, heh:

Could the right wing please make up their fucking minds? Either Obama is a weak, milquetoast mom jeans wearing laughingstock and coward that Putin is walking all over or he’s an evil, petty tyrant who forcibly silences his critics with IRS audits and drones and is running a criminal administration. HE CAN’T BE BOTH.
It’s the same sort of bullshit dichotomy the Code Pink/ANSWER types tried to push about George W. Bush during his two terms, that, somehow, W was an evil mastermind who pulled the US into two wars in order to enrich himself and his oil industry/Halliburton/KBR buddies AND that he was a mental midget that couldn’t tie his own shoelaces without Darth Cheney’s help.
Nowadays, I don’t look back favorably on W’s presidency, even though I voted for him in 2004, but that sort of shit is fucking illogical and ridiculous.

I am really tired this evening. I don’t know who at Microsoft thinks that it’s a good idea to put almost 1000 pages of content into a class designed to be taught in 5 days. (an Intro to T-SQL 2012). I spent most of the week not ‘editing’ as I taught it, I was taking a chainsaw to whole sections at a whack. My students agreed with me, it was WAY too much stuff, they were brain-dead by Wednesday.

The historical trend is that the party out of the White House eventually takes over congress. Republicans probably would have taken over long ago if they hadn’t been Tea Partying and running nutty candidates. No, it’s not the end of the world.
True. However, I’d like to see the historical trend reversed this time.
It may not be the end of the world, but the nitwits who run the GOP have demonstrated they’re willing to fuck over the country because SCARY BLACK MAN IN WHITE HOUSE.
Call me crazy, but people who govern like that shouldn’t be allowed to drive the agenda.

um… this Nixon they want to turn Obama into? Would that be the Nixon who brought us EPA, OSHA, Affirmative Action, Title IX, Titlx X, took over an unpopular Asian land war started six years before he took office and ended said war in his second term, put universal health care in front of Congress, supported and was supported by unions….
Is that the Nixon they want to compare him to? ‘Cause, um… maybe they have a point?

In Farrah Fawcett, yeah, but not in the original Arabic name as it’s not a rolling “r” sound.
BTW, thanks for the suggestion about The Americans series a few weeks back. I watched all the episodes the weekend after you mentioned it. I’m looking forward to the next season.
