Breaking News: The NSA Is Spying on Foreign Countries

Don’t look now, but it’s their job
World • Views: 18,038

The new Barton Gellman story at the Washington Post shows that the NSA is pretty damned good at collecting intelligence from foreign countries: NSA Surveillance Program Reaches ‘Into the Past’ to Retrieve, Replay Phone Calls.

In the initial deployment, collection systems are recording “every single” conversation nationwide, storing billions of them in a 30-day rolling buffer that clears the oldest calls as new ones arrive, according to a classified summary.

The call buffer opens a door “into the past,” the summary says, enabling users to “retrieve audio of interest that was not tasked at the time of the original call.” Analysts listen to only a fraction of 1 percent of the calls, but the absolute numbers are high. Each month, they send millions of voice clippings, or “cuts,” for processing and long-term storage.

At the request of U.S. officials, The Washington Post is withholding details that could be used to identify the country where the system is being employed or other countries where its use was envisioned.

Note: this program is targeted against a specific foreign country, probably because it’s one of those nations that tacitly — or openly — supports terrorism against the US.

Also note: there’s absolutely nothing unlawful about this, and foreign intelligence gathering has always involved collecting content, through wiretaps, bugs, hacking, etc. This is what the NSA was created to do, and they’re doing it to protect US citizens.

And it’s an absolute certainty that other countries have similar operations.

I remember the days when Snowden’s apologists pretended they were exposing wrongdoing against US citizens. Now that excuse is totally gone, and they’re simply exposing perfectly legal intelligence programs designed to protect Americans.

UPDATE at 3/18/14 11:03:38 am

I should note that even though the entire premise of publishing an article like this is flawed, in my opinion, at least the Washington Post was responsible enough not to reveal the country being monitored by this program.

Glenn Greenwald, on the other hand, has made it very clear that he won’t be bound by such quaint notions of responsibility. Here’s his reply when asked if he agreed with redacting these details:

And again, to be really, really super explicit about this:

Nationwide of a foreign nation.

Not here.

Spies doing spy things.

From a technical perspective, it’s actually pretty impressive. That’s a buttload of data to collect and store.

Good. The NSA leadership should be prosecuted if they are NOT spying on foreign countries.

I don’t know. I really think a lot aren’t aware though even though the Rosenberg spying happened when the US and USSR were technically allies.

51 goddamnedfrank  Tue, Mar 18, 2014 11:04:55am

Just try to figure out how difficult it would be to actually capture 100% of a country’s inside and outside telephone traffic. Think about North Korea, who were actually technically still at war with. It might be a good candidate for the country in question until you figure out that they share a border with China, are insular and famously inscrutable. Tapping all the telephone lines between those two countries isn’t something I’d ever be anything near 100% certain of.

The only real remaining candidates are Afghanistan where we still operate militarily and could tap the official civilian infrastructure, and strong allies like the UK and Australia who might conceivably just give us such access freely as part of their own counter terrorism operations.

Western sanctions could propel Russia’s own pivot to Asia

If Western sanctions do toughen, experts say, Russia is likely simply to speed efforts to pivot its industrial and energy focus toward customers in Asia, such as China, who tend to be far less critical of Moscow on human rights and geopolitical issues than those in the West.

“Our Asian energy markets are already expanding nicely,” says Grigory Birg, an analyst with Investcafe, a Moscow investment consultancy. “Both Gazprom and Transneft are building new pipelines to China, and there is talk of extending our network of gas pipelines all the way to South Korea. This is where the big future markets for Russia are in any case.”

True enough. It is about who is executing the power. Ukraine authorizes use of weapons

Ukrainian forces have been authorized to use weapons to defend themselves, Reuters reports, citing acting President Turchynov’s press service. Other sources have confirmed with Ukrainian military sources.

Update: The Ukrainian government has issued a statement authorizing use of arms, which also confirms that a junior officer has been killed and a captain injured in the neck.

Rogozin said the “search for accounts and property of people who cannot have them by definition is some angry joke,” he said, referring to the ban on Russian state officials holding assets abroad, Interfax reported.

Greenwald denies that he supported the invasion of Iraq on the grounds that he was an apathetic, passive consumer of news, despite having written that:

I believed then that the president was entitled to have his national security judgment deferred to, and to the extent that I was able to develop a definitive view, I accepted his judgment that American security really would be enhanced by the invasion of this sovereign country.

It gets better, in the same rebuttal (full paragraph included just to be clear):

It is true that, like 90% of Americans, I did support the war in Afghanistan and, living in New York, believed the rhetoric about the threat of Islamic extremism: those were obvious mistakes. It’s also true that one can legitimately criticize me for not having actively opposed the Iraq War at a time when many people were doing so. Martin Luther King, in his 1967 speech explaining why his activism against the Vietnam War was indispensable to his civil rights work, acknowledged that he had been too slow to pay attention to or oppose the war and that he thus felt obligated to work with particular vigor against it once he realized the need (“Over the past two years, as I have moved to break the betrayal of my own silences and to speak from the burnings of my own heart, as I have called for radical departures from the destruction of Vietnam”).

So, being an apathetic 36-year-old attorney trying to make a living in New York is just like being a full-time civil rights activist for a decade, at a time when this was so dangerous that many people got killed. How could we have failed to notice the similarity?

Ugh. I really hope we clearly explained to the new Ukrainian government how much “support” we’re going to lend them. I hope this isn’t like when we encouraged the Kurds to rise up against Sadam and then changed our minds about supporting them. We did the same thing more recently with the Syrian rebels.

You know for a fact that we hung all of the Syrian rebels out to dry? I know we did the deal with Russia to cut back on the use of gas weapons, but I don’t think it is so cut and dry that we have completely stopped backing some of the rebel groups through back channels, etc.

I understand the awful frustration people are feeling about Crimea, but social media shouldn’t determine what the Ukrainian govt should do right now. Without outside support and aid, Ukraine can do virtually nothing about the situation in Crimea, and even then, it would be very risky. Let Crimea go, and try to get the rest of Ukraine together as a united country; that’s going to take time even without a large amount of bloodshed and destruction. Winning hearts and minds is about all the Rada can do at this point.

Don’t people understand that in this instance Putin saw his opportunity to go in quickly without repercussions and take what he wanted? It was like a seasoned shoplifter brazenly walking out of an exclusive store in their most expensive coat and never looking back—and never being caught, either.

I’ll start with consent.

Was she legally able to give consent when she was 15 and impregnated? If not, how can someone not able to consent to sex be held responsible for the outcome of the pregnancy.

Maybe if the social media types had it explained to them Russia moved like a flash mob into a convenience store and ripped off what they wanted as the store employees watched helplessly they might get it.

If you’ve got an electrical fire or loss of primary power systems, you may need to either power down the unit or conserve meager reserves by shutting down non-flight-critical systems.

Ultimately, it’s baked into our fundamental aviation mindset/infrastructure that the pilot in command has the final authority to do essentially whatever he deems necessary to protect those entrusted to him.

Pilots mention that a) in an emergency, you WANT to switch off an electrical system that could be the source of a fire. and b) transponders get out of whack sometimes. How to fix? Well, you go through a power cycle….just like a PC.

Bullshit.

2 employees, making the current minimum wage. So lets say one gets a raise to $15 and the other gets let go.

The first employee now has more disposable income to use purchasing goods and services. He’s not just going to sit on the money, he’s going to spend it on his family.

Businesses looking to fill the increase in demand are going to expand, hiring employees so they can cash in. Employee 2 gets a new job.

That is the Jewish belief.

In Islam, abortion up to four months is permissible, if haram, but it is not held to be an offense for which there are criminal or even civil sanctions. Certainly, in the case of the woman’s life being in danger;

On the issue of the life of the woman, Muslims universally agree that her life takes precedence over the life of the fetus. This is because the woman is considered the “original source of life”, while the fetus is only “potential” life. Muslim jurists agree that abortion is allowed based on the principle that “the greater evil [the woman’s death] should be warded off by the lesser evil [abortion].” In these cases the physician is considered a better judge than the scholar.

So, they record all voice calls of Lower Slobbovia — fill in the blanks as to which country this might be — and then, since they couldn’t possibly listen to all calls — you’d need roughly the population of the said country to do so — they put it on a big, searchable TiVo. Cool!

And, having all of the calls in Somalia for a… month… stored is bad how? When we find out which call might yield a bit of important information, I think we should know.

I wonder if we’ve got a lot of info on what Putin is doing now? Gee, I sure hope so.
