If you think Neanderthals were stupid and primitive, it’s time to think again.

The widely held notion that Neanderthals were dimwitted and that their inferior intelligence allowed them to be driven to extinction by the much brighter ancestors of modern humans is not supported by scientific evidence, according to a researcher at the University of Colorado Boulder.

[…]

But they go on:

“Researchers were comparing Neanderthals not to their contemporaries on other continents but to their successors,” Villa said. “It would be like comparing the performance of Model T Fords, widely used in America and Europe in the early part of the last century, to the performance of a modern-day Ferrari and conclude that Henry Ford was cognitively inferior to Enzo Ferrari.

Former NSA contractor Snowden expects to remain in Russia

reuters.com

(Reuters) - Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, who fled to Moscow last year after revealing details of massive U.S. intelligence-gathering programs, expects his asylum status in Russia to be renewed before it expires this summer, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

“Snowden and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras, who worked with Snowden to reveal NSA documents he took from his job, were given the Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling, an award to promote transparency and whistle-blowing, at a ceremony in Washington on Wednesday. Snowden appeared on a video link-up from Russia and Poitras appeared from Berlin.

“Jesselyn Radack, an attorney for Snowden, said his temporary asylum in Russia will expire at the end of June but that “prospects are good” for it to be renewed.” More

And Snowden himself and his motives are as transparent as a pane of glass. “Truth-telling”, my ass.

And people say that Sarah Palin’s time as a D list celebrity is coming to an end.

Pshaw! She’s still in demand. So her recent pole dance in Iowa didn’t do so well.

When Palin took the stage at the Hy-Vee Conference Center under a banner that read “Heels On, Gloves Off” on Sunday at an event for Senate candidate Joni Ernst, the ballroom was half-full, with a couple of hundred attendees scattered in clumps. Three people held signs and, while Palin was received warmly, only about 50 people stayed after to shake her hand on the rope line as Shania Twain’s “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face” blared from the speakers.

That means nothing. People just can’t get enough of Our Sarah.

Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska and vice presidential candidate, will be in Williston in October to be the keynote speaker for a Trinity Christian School fundraiser.

Palin will speak Oct. 13 at The Well at Williston State College for the school’s annual fundraising banquet. The theme of the banquet is the oil industry and Christian education, according to the school’s website.

Williston is the eight largest city in North Dakota (suck it, Wahpeton, you losers!).

You see: Sarah Palin is still big, it’s the venues she appears at that got smaller…

Now we’re in real big trouble with the old guy upstairs:

Louie Gohmert Fears John Kerry Is A Wizard Who Has Cursed Israel And Will Bring God’s Wrath Upon U.S.

Why does God always pick on us? Why not the Palestinians, Egyptians, Syrians, Iranians, Russians, North Koreans, Chinese?

But no, it’s always us. Or, maybe it’s just because God destroying the US is the thing RWNjs like Louie wish for when they blow out the birthday candles.

This meme baffles the hell outta me. They really think that families were kept together during slavery? I knew what happened in the slave trade in 7th freaking grade, it’s not like this isn’t common knowledge. Now, their kids may not be taught it, but they sure as hell were. They’re lying AND full of shit, what a combo platter.

Wonder what old Sam would think of Governor Secession. Probably not too highly.

Then-governor Sam Houston, upon refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy:

Fellow-Citizens, in the name of your rights and liberties, which I believe have been trampled upon, I refuse to take this oath. In the name of the nationality of Texas, which has been betrayed by the Convention, I refuse to take this oath. In the name of the Constitution of Texas, I refuse to take this oath. In the name of my own conscience and manhood, which this Convention would degrade by dragging me before it, to pander to the malice of my enemies, I refuse to take this oath. I deny the power of this Convention to speak for Texas….I protest….against all the acts and doings of this convention and I declare them null and void

The convention was the special convention that had voted for secession, and whose legality was upheld by the legislature but rejected by Houston. Houston was removed from office and retired to his home in Huntsville, where he died two years later.

I’m pretty sure Twitter won’t be dead until the heat death of the universe. Or until transcendence renders social media irrelevant.

You would think Walter Williams would know better. What a fucking tool.

We definitely were. There’s no excuse for that kind of crap but Williams is a hack with an agenda. Him and Thomas Sowell both like to claim the welfare state is worse than slavery and then their white conservative fellow assholes can go “See, a black guy thinks the welfare state is worse than slavery so therefore it is!” He’s also the guy who as I got at above coined the term “Feminazi.” It’s sad that this guy is an academic.

Yep, that’s why I was getting at actually. I remember reading that very speech when I read Profiles In Courage a few years back.

U.S. officials say Syria is using remaining chemical weapons stockpile as leverage

The months-long effort to dismantle Syria’s chemical weapons program has ground to a halt because Syria is holding on to 27 tons of sarin precursor chemicals as leverage in a dispute with the international community over the future of facilities used to store the deadly agents, according to U.S. officials.

“They’re just stalling for time to hold on to some of these facilities,” said a U.S. official familiar with the matter who would discuss the issue only on the condition of anonymity.

HURR HURR!!!! IF TEH BLAH TEENAGERS JUST ONLY WORKED IN TEH COTTON FIELDS FOR NO PAY THEY COULD HAVE ALL TEH JRRBS!!!!!!!

[Embedded content]

Hey, “Janie”, let me explain it to you:

Jobs are created when people buy stuff. The stuff they buy has to be made, distributed, sold, and serviced by other people, who in turn use their pay to buy stuff.

Raise the minimum wage, and more people will be able to buy more stuff, which will create more jobs for people to make, distribute, sell, and service that stuff.

Give a poor guy more money and he’ll spend it buying stuff, pumping that money right into the economy. Give a rich guy more money, and he’ll put it in a bank or gamble with it (they call it ‘investing’) most of which does not do dick to create jobs.

Right now, our economy is giving less and less money to more and more people and more and more money to fewer and fewer people.

I suspect this speech will put an end to McCain’s defense of her.

Aside from the deeply offensive content, her delivery is getting more and more bizarre. Her voice is getting ever more Phyllis Schlafly-like, her gestures are weird and disconnected with what she is saying, and what’s with those random pauses?
