Eh, not bad. But I’ve got Paul Anka doing Van Halen’s Jump on at the moment and that bit of weirdness out weirds just about anything else imaginable.

Stranger still is the fact that it … well… Works…

That’s something I’ve been rolling around in my head for awhile now, the possibility that the “inevitability” of her nomination proves to be anything but. In such a scenario, the GOP’s pretty well fucked. They have nobody in their stable that isn’t either batshit insane or will sound it by the time their own primaries have ended, so all they really have is character attacks on who they think is the most likely target.

074:49:41 Borman: Houston, Apollo 8. Are you still there?
074:49:43 Collins: You’re still loud and clear, Frank. [Long pause.]

074:50:01 Collins: Apollo 8, Houston. Go ahead, Frank, with your message.

074:50:07 Borman: Okay. This is to Rod Rose and the people at St. Christopher’s, actually to people everywhere. Give us, O God, the vision which can see thy love in the world in spite of human failure. Give us the faith to trust the goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness. Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts, and show us what each one of us can do to set forth the coming of the day of universal peace. Amen.

074:50:35 Collins: Amen.

074:50:36 Borman: I was supposed to lay-read tonight, and I couldn’t quite make it.

re: #14 freetoken

Airline ticketing, seating, boarding, and in-flight service has to be, collectively, one of the most obvious examples of the embedded hierarchical primate nature still residing in us humans.

The boarding procedure has to be one of the most inefficient processes known to humanity. You have 200 or more passengers, each with carry-on luggage that must be stowed before they take their seats. The airplane has at least two useful exits on each side. So, logically, the best way to board them is: (1) open only one hatchway (2) board forward passengers first, by rows or sections. That way, aft passengers toting bags have to squeeze past the forward passengers still stowing their bags, and while those aft passengers are stowing their shit, board the passengers sitting behind them.

I have been on exactly one flight for which the ground crew opened up the forward and aft hatchways, which made the process somewhat smoother.

But, airline boarding is miles above the typical Chinese train boarding experience, which can best be compared to a cattle stampede — without all the mooing.

Actually, the Prussian Stechschritt (the goose-step’s proper name) is still used here in the Czech Republic by the Presidential Honor Guard, though it’s a much milder variant. You still see it in Poland from time to time as well in the Honor Guard, but it’s becoming more infrequent there. Most militaries in Europe long ago abandoned it, but it still remains in the aforementioned countries in a ceremonial capacity as a vestigial example of Germano-Prussian military influence.

Stay Classy, Kim:

North Korea insults Obama with racist barbs, South Korea’s Park with sexist ones

Vitriolic insults hurled by North Korea’s state-run media are so frequent that they’re usually not news.

But recent KCNA articles use such racially-charged rhetoric that they have drawn criticism from the White House’s National Security Council, which called them “particularly ugly and disrespectful.”

North Korea’s state media KCNA described President Barack Obama using racial epithets and likened him to a “wicked black monkey.”

The most offensive piece, published in Korean on May 2 under the title “Divine punishment to the world’s one and only delinquent Obama,” repeatedly refers to him as a monkey.

“You can also tell this by his appearance and behavior, and while it may be because he is a crossbreed, one cannot help thinking the more one sees him that he has escaped from a monkey’s body,” it stated.

I fully expect North Korea to be praised on Stormfront for throwing this shit. It won’t get traction outside of openly racist sites, if only because its too blatant for most wingnut sites.

Meanwhile, in Plzen:

This was something a salesman at a supermarket in Tᖞmošné in Pilsen certainly did not expect! Out of a box with bananas a huge exotic spider climbed. It arrived in a cardboard box with fruit halfway across the globe and now it is recovering from a busy trip in a quarantine terrarium.

“Employees of the supermarket were scared of the spider at first, but then it they caught in a jar and handed it over to me,” said animal rescuer Karel Makoň .

The spider is not dangerous, although its bite would be painful.” It’s kind of a miracle that it survived not only transport in the crate with bananas, but also all the various chemical treatments that accompany the import of bananas ,” said spider specialist Vitezslav Honsa, in whose care the spider is now.

The spider arrived in Plzen from the French island of Martinique in the Caribbean. They live there in large numbers and it is a common spider. This particular spider brought an egg-sac with it. Experts expect they will be able to incubate the eggs and hatch them successfully.

Morning!

Nice to wake up to a couple of cool and fun images in this thread.

The absolutely cute image FemNazi posted in #18 and the three Afghan badass boarders in #26.

#26 shows one thing that I have always felt would be the string that joins the world together. Pop culture on TV/Net. I’ve said it before…Levis Jeans, Rock Music and Coca-Cola would be the downfall of the wall(s). I absolutely love the young lady on the right with the skater pose. Nice colorful clothing too.

I sincerely hope that the younger folks of some of the Mid-Eastern countries bring about the change needed. Maybe those young women will figure out a way to take down some Taliban ass from within.

As far as the Kangaroo court Trey Gowdy and The Repubs will be performing in the Congressional Drama Class, Targetpractice said he thought Rep Cummings would be good as the only Dem. That’s kind of a fun thought. However, he was shown addressing congress in a clip on MSNBC last evening I had yakking away in the background as I was working on some wood trim. I think he said he wouldn’t have anything to do with it, and that the Dems should not take part. I may be wrong, I was not paying strict attention.

In line with that, I’m gonna post up again a little ‘shop I did last evening to go to that whole Boehner-led, Tea Party driven sham.

Trey Gowdy ready for court

73 Rightwingconspirator  May 9, 2014 6:02:02am

Uh Oh.

FBI agents violated the rights of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev by continuously questioning him while he lay in pain in a hospital bed, even after he had asked for a lawyer 10 times and authorities had determined there were no other bombs or threats to public safety, defense lawyers argued in court documents filed Wednesday.

The attorneys asked a Boston federal judge to suppress all statements Tsarnaev made to law enforcement while he was hospitalized at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

“The questioning continued for hours, in what was obviously an effort to extract as much incriminating information as possible, without regard for the protections of the Fifth Amendment,” his lawyers wrote in the 21-page filing. At the time, Tsarnaev could not talk because of his injuries, so he answered questions in writing.

The lawyers also say that his hospital statements should be suppressed because they were involuntary. Tsarnaev was heavily drugged and in pain while he was being interviewed, they argue. His left eye was sutured shut, his jaw was wired closed and he was unable to hear out of his left ear. At times, his pen trailed off the page, indicating that he fell asleep or lost motor control.

re: #73 Rightwingconspirator

Uh Oh.

I think there was some brouhaha about this at the time and honestly, if what is alleged can be proven, then it’s hard to argue that the statements should stay in.

re: #72 ObserverArt

According to Politico, Cummings is one of those who’s most adamant about a Democrat being appointed to the committee, if only to keep Gowdy and the rest of the Peanut Gallery honest. I’m not sure if he’s said something elsewhere about how he doesn’t wish to be a part of this committee, but if he’s open to it, he seems the best candidate for the job. Just appointing him and him alone, an outspoken critic of this witch-hunt, would send a powerful message that Democrats don’t expect Republicans to conduct a fair and impartial investigation.

As much as we might think it is a pain in the ass to do these things by the book (law), he still has his rights and they should be respected. I would hope they have enough without the bedside interrogation to convict.

re: #73 Rightwingconspirator

Uh Oh.

The reporter jumps to a conclusion with that headline since there has not been a ruling on what his lawyers say, namely, that there was no “public threat”.

“FBI questioned Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in hospital even after public safety threat was ruled out, his lawyers say”

This is speculation about how the judge will rule.

“There’s some probability” that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s lawyers will win latest motion, a legal expert says

ETA: Even the article concludes with the fact that the govt has not filed a response to the defendant’s motion. This is just pro forma for defense lawyers to raise these issues, if they’re worth their salt.

re: #73 Rightwingconspirator

Uh Oh.

I think this may be a case of lousy reporting. I seem to recall there was some discussion at the time about when they mirandized him. I think they are allowed to question subjects without a lawyer is there’s the possibility of an imminent threat or something. I’m not surprised that defense lawyers are complaining about it but I hope the law was written in such a way that the judge won’t throw out the evidence. Either way, I’m pretty sure there’s enough evidence to get a conviction without it.

See my ETA. The story is speculative, at best, since there has been no ruling and the govt hasn’t even filed a response yet. The judge won’t rule until pleadings have all been submitted and he has read everything and done his own research.

85 lawhawk  May 9, 2014 6:26:37am

re: #73 Rightwingconspirator

The confessions/statements may be thrown out after the imminent threat passed, but it is possible that the prosecutors might be able to bring them in in other ways. There’s sufficient other evidence linking the bombs to the duo, and that’s what the prosecutors will have to focus on if the statements are excluded.

Separately, the FBI had better reexamine its methods to make sure this kind of event doesn’t happen again. Countless prosecutions have been botched because of shoddy procedure and violations of defendant rights, overcoming whatever evidence linking the defendants to the crime.

That’s a possibility here, though there’s enough evidence linking them to the crime that they’ll still spend a considerable amount of time in prison, though it may likely spur a plea deal that lets them spend less time that otherwise had the statements been taken properly.

re: #75 Targetpractice

According to Politico, Cummings is one of those who’s most adamant about a Democrat being appointed to the committee, if only to keep Gowdy and the rest of the Peanut Gallery honest. I’m not sure if he’s said something elsewhere about how he doesn’t wish to be a part of this committee, but if he’s open to it, he seems the best candidate for the job. Just appointing him and him alone, an outspoken critic of this witch-hunt, would send a powerful message that Democrats don’t expect Republicans to conduct a fair and impartial investigation.

You may be right. Like I said, I wasn’t paying attention…but I know one thing…he was not a happy camper. Anyway it goes down it is going to be a mess. That is why I use the Kangaroo Court reference. Hell, it can’t possibly be any bigger a sham.

re: #76 Eventual Carrion

As much as we might think it is a pain in the ass to do these things by the book (law), he still has his rights and they should be respected. I would hope they have enough without the bedside interrogation to convict.

I would think/hope the video of him being shown walking into the crowd and dropping his bag and walking off would be enough. Added to all the other vids. His hiding in the boat with wounds, etc. There is a lot of evidence.

Yeah, I knew when I read Gowdy refer to this committee as a “trial” that the fix was in. Sort of surprised the GOP decided to show its hand so soon, before the gavel has even come down on the first hearing. And having thought on the matter, I’ve decided that a single Democrat sitting on the committee is the best compromise between boycotting and total participation.

Because with immediate effort we can help 200 girls not be dead. Nothing we do will bring four men back to life.

Nothing we could have done during the day of the Benghazi attack could have saved those 4 Americans either, short of having a TARDIS. We simply didn’t have forces at the ready to respond that could do so in a location close enough to respond with force sufficient to rescue them, and the earlier Benghazi hearings indicated as much.

The President’s response to the earlier report? Create a rapid reaction force to improve the DoD’s response to these kinds of events so that we could potentially save those lives.

But the TP/GOP would rather exploit those four deaths for political points, fundraising, and hobbling the Administration rather than fix the broken system or actually govern (because that would expose the fact that they’re a bunch of empty suits).

Brunei sharia laws sparking outrage in Hollywood…

Beverly Hills tells Brunei to get out of town, sell stake in famous hotel

Beverly Hills, California (CNN) — The Beverly Hills City Council has condemned the government of Brunei for its “extreme and inhumane” Sharia laws and urged the nation’s sultan to sell ownership of the landmark Beverly Hills Hotel and any other property the Asian country and its ruler may own in the exclusive community.

The council made the declaration in a 5-0 vote Tuesday night, despite 125 workers from the hotel packing the council chambers and expressing concern about their jobs.

…The council vote came a day after Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis, led several celebrities in a demonstration across from the famed Sunset Boulevard hotel. They protested the hotel’s ownership, which is an investment group controlled by the Sultan of Brunei.

In late April, the small Muslim nation on the northern coast of the island of Borneo implemented Sharia law, marked by strong punishments for those found guilty of homosexuality or adultery — including stoning to death those convicted.

The law was praised by the sultan, who isn’t just the country’s ruler but also a major political and cultural figure.

“We’re just making people aware,” Leno told CNN. “It’s not a political issue. This is not something that’s debatable. … It’s people being stoned to death.”

Also, and I’m sort of embarrassed to ask this, but what is Behnghazi about again? Is it that the GOP thinks this was an Al Queda attack and Obama is covering it up by saying it was about that YouTube video?

Or are they saying that Obama heard about the attack and for whatever reason told our forces not intervene?

Nigeria Had 4-Hour Warning on School Raid, Amnesty International Says

Nigerian authorities failed to act on warnings about Boko Haram’s imminent raid on a boarding school where it abducted more than 240 girls last month, according to Amnesty international.

The London-based human rights group, after verifying the information with “credible sources,” said Nigerian security forces knew of the attack four hours before Boko Haram struck.

“The fact that Nigerian security forces knew about Boko Haram’s impending raid, but failed to take the immediate action needed to stop it, will only amplify the national and international outcry at this horrific crime,” Netsanet Belay, Amnesty International’s Africa director, research and advocacy, said today in a statement.

“It amounts to a gross dereliction of Nigeria’s duty to protect civilians, who remain sitting ducks for such attacks. The Nigerian leadership must now use all lawful means at their disposal to secure the girls’ safe release and ensure nothing like this can happen again.”

Younger cat has figured it out and gets extra treats, while older cat just sniffs at it and then ignores it. Antiwar: Everything Is A Threat: The Fear-Mongering and Hysteria Over Boko Haram

U.S. politicians, military officials, foreign policy wonks, and news anchors are trained to see every violent non-state group anywhere in the world as a direct threat to America. They use their soapboxes in the media to get that point across to an unsuspecting American population. It helps politicians appear strong, helps military bureaucrats get funding, helps wonks appear knowledgeable, and helps news anchors feel important.

In reality, Boko Haram does not present a threat to the U.S. and U.S. intervention of any kind is not needed, nor would it do any good. What should be obvious, though, is that the burden of proof for the supposed threat and potential intervention is on those who assert it. Evidence-free fear mongering shouldn’t be enough.

Hindu Prayer Interrupted In Senate By Christians
Youtube Video

Christian activists briefly disrupted a Hindu invocation in the U.S Senate on Thursday, marring a historic first for the chamber and showing that fundamentalism is present and shouting in the U.S too.

Invited by the Senate to offer Hindu prayers in place of the usual Christian invocation, Rajan Zed, a Hindu priest from Reno, Nevada, had just stepped up to the podium for the landmark occasion when three protesters, said to belong to the Christian Right anti-abortion group Operation Save America, interrupted him by loudly asking for God’s forgiveness for allowing the ”false prayer” of a Hindu in the Senate chamber.

Prelude to the protest
AFA and David Barton
Several days prior to the scheduled prayer the American Family Association (AFA) called on its membership to phone and email their Senators “expressing your disappointment in the Senate decision to invite a Hindu to open the session with prayer.” In the Action Alerts to their membership the AFA cited self-styled historian David Barton saying he wonders “why the U.S. government is seeking the invocation of a non-monotheistic god. Barton points out that since Hindus worship multiple gods, the prayer will be completely outside the American paradigm, flying in the face of the American motto ‘One Nation Under God’.

United States Representative for Idaho Bill Sali viewed Zed’s prayer and the election of U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (a Muslim from Minnesota) as changes which “are not what was envisioned by the Founding Fathers”. He held that the US was made on principles derived from Christian scriptures, and that the only way the nation had been allowed to continue in a world hostile to such principles was because of “the protective hand of God.” Saying that when a Hindu prays “that’s a different god” and that act may remove the protective hand and thereby “creates problems for the longevity of this country.”

Pope demands ‘legitimate redistribution’ of wealth

Pope Francis called Friday for governments to redistribute wealth to the poor in a new spirit of generosity to help curb the “economy of exclusion” that is taking hold today.

Francis made the appeal during a speech to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the heads of major U.N. agencies who met in Rome this week.

Latin America’s first pope has frequently lashed out at the injustices of capitalism and the global economic system that excludes so much of humanity, though his predecessors have voiced similar concerns.

On Friday, Francis called for the United Nations to promote a “worldwide ethical mobilization” of solidarity with the poor in a new spirit of generosity.

I’m glad there is some public condemnation happening right now without worrying about any PC backlash. Here are some of the people and groups boycotting that hotel:

…Over the past several days, 20 events have been canceled at the Beverly Hills property—a loss of about $2 million in revenue for the hotel, according to Dorchester. Local politicians and celebrities are also boycotting the nearby Hotel Bel Air in Los Angeles, the hotel’s more subdued sister property.

Big names like Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres are urging boycotts, and the Beverly Hills mayor and council are calling for Dorchester to sell the famed hotel.

Dorchester, which runs 10 hotels world-wide, is looking to expand globally and has said it is seeking to acquire a luxury property in New York. Hotel analysts say the publicity surrounding protests against the company could complicate efforts to operate a Manhattan hotel, where there is also opposition to the new law.

The participation of Hollywood’s A-list in the boycott has been painful because the hotel has long been a see-and-be-seen spot to eat, sleep and fundraise. The hotel’s Polo Lounge restaurant is one of this city’s prime power-lunch spots. One event earlier this year attracted stars including Will Smith and Sandra Bullock.

“When we heard what was going on in Brunei, we said that doesn’t fit with our philosophy,” said Elaine Leader, head of a teen support organization that abruptly moved a fundraising event for 500 people honoring Sony Pictures Co-Chairman Amy Pascal from the Beverly Hills Hotel to the Sony Pictures lot this week.

British billionaire Richard Branson took to Twitter over the weekend to declare that no Virgin employee or Branson family member will stay at Dorchester hotel “until the Sultan abides by basic human rights.”

Coming events like a “Women in Entertainment” breakfast thrown by the Hollywood Reporter in December, and a “Night Before the Oscars” fundraiser held by the Motion Picture & Television Fund, have been moved from the hotel.

I occasionally see this happening, from the likes of Tony Campolo, Bishop John Shelby Spong, Brendan Manning and others (seems that Pope Francis is doing so in some ways as well), but the problem from a “media attention” perspective is that “moderate” Christians don’t yell, interrupt Senate hearings and stand on street corners near abortion clinics yelling “Baby Killer.” Their politics are not as crystallized as the evangelical fundamentalist right is either.

I watched all this happen in the Southern Baptist Convention over many years. The denomination, while not exactly progressive, was far less reactionary before the 1970s. The “liberal” SBC wing was caught completely off-guard by the fire-breathing zealots who came in and, through parliamentary maneuvers, basically drove them out of the temple. It’s very akin to what conservatives have done in local government bodies across the country.

Feline overlords are jumpy today since there are men on ropes working on the building (re-pointing).

Younger overlord is handling his asthma treatment well so far. Not much struggle when I use the inhaler with him twice a day. And he is taking his pill since it appears I have a cat that likes the Greenies pill pocket treats.

I also installed a “interactive game” thing that is a bunch of tubes you can stick treats or kibble in and the cats have to fish them out to eat them. Younger cat has figured it out and gets extra treats, while older cat just sniffs at it and then ignores it. Though they also both seem to enjoy the new “hunt the treat” activity where I place Greenies around the apartment in various places for them to find.

My daughter’s cat likes Greenies so much that when a pill fell out of the pill pocket, he actually ate the pill off the floor (you know, the same pill that he would go to any lengths to avoid if it weren’t offered in a Greenie) because if it is associated with a Greenie it is delicious.
As for the interactive treat ball, he figured out that if he just sat and rocked it back and forth with his paw long enough the treat would fall out. Lazy cat.

Again I have to ask what religion is it that this pompous buffoon pretends to follow?

In Matthew 17:24-27 we learn that Jesus did indeed pay taxes:

After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”

“Yes, he does,” he replied.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?”

“From others,” Peter answered.

“Then the sons are exempt,” Jesus said to him. “But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.” (NIV)

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke each tell of another account, when the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus in his words, and find a reason to accuse him. In Matthew 22:15-22 we read:

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away. (NIV)

This same incident is also recorded in Mark 12:13-17 and Luke 20:20-26.

So the gospels leave no doubt that Jesus taught his followers not only in words, but by example, to give to the government any taxes that are owed.

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Florida town’s choice: Violate Supreme Court ruling or open meeting with Satanic prayer

Less than three days after the Supreme Court ruled in Town of Greece v. Galloway that prayers before town meetings did not violate the Constitution’s ban on endorsing religion, a self-styled Satanist in Deerfield Beach, Florida has asked city officials to let him open a meeting with a Satanic prayer.

Chaz Stevens — who made headlines last December when he forced Florida Governor Rick Scott to allow him to erect an 8-foot-tall Festivus pole made of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer cans next to Deerfield Beach’s nativity manger — told the New Times that he recently converted from “Pabstfestidian” because “Satan is a cool dude.”

“Think of all the people he’s in charge of,” Stevens said. “Do you want to be stuck listening to harp music in the afterlife? Hell no. I want to drink beer and hang with hookers.”

Spent about 20 minutes or so almost blowing a gasket at Verizon. Mutherf0ckers. I’ve purchased the baseball package from Verizon the last two years but refused it, or tried to refuse it, for this year. Well, I guess you can imagine how this turned out. When I tried to to refuse it online in March, I was unable to do so. So I called them directly and VERY SPECIFICALLY refused the package for this year. But today I see it on my bill. And when I contact Verizon I’m told they don’t have a record of my having canceled the package. Yeah.

And naturally I don’t have a written confirmation of my refusing the package, just a couple of generic emails from Verizon related to other changes to my service.

Four Pinocchios for Obama’s claim that Republicans have ‘filibustered about 500 pieces of legislation’

…On just about every level, this claim is ridiculous.

We realize that Senate rules are complex and difficult to understand, but the president did serve in the Senate and should be familiar with its terms and procedures. Looking at the numbers, he might have been able to make a case that Republicans have blocked about 50 bills that he had wanted passed, such as an increase in the minimum wage. But instead he inflated the numbers to such an extent that he even included votes in which he, as senator, supported a filibuster.

It was just a decimal point error. Coulda happened to anyone.

I thought the families asked that the names of the girls not be released.

Here’s where the tweeter is getting the names from.

Update #2: Upon further reflection and having read Jina Moore’s piece exploring the internal Nigerian politics of releasing the names and the specific concerns brought up by the governor of Borno state, we’ve decided to adjust this list to include the first names of the girls only.

Update #1: Some readers have expressed concern that posting these names may put the girls at further risk. We take that concern seriously, but given that the list has been released by a Nigerian organization and has been reported on by both the Nigerian and US media, we feel comfortable keeping it up here. We hope that the good that comes from putting names to this injustice outweighs any potential harm caused by their release.

180 names there, some of which are duplicates of course. The piece by Jina Moore (link above in the quote) is interesting.

Obama, at Wal-Mart, touts efficiency; angers labor

The White House chose Wal-Mart because the company has committed to doubling the number of solar energy projects at its stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centers.

But in choosing the giant retailer as the backdrop for his announcement, Obama triggered a backlash from labor unions and pay equity advocates who say Wal-Mart pays low wages and who archly noted that Obama has made pay equity a central issue of his presidency.

“What numbskull in the White House arranged this?” former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, who served in the Bill Clinton administration, said in a posting on Facebook on Thursday.

WalMart has how many locations nationally? Between distribution centers, WalMart centers, Sams Clubs, etc., you’ve got more than 4,800 locations nationally. if you get them to go solar, you’d have a significant reduction in emissions. It’s an economy of scale.

Moreover, Walmart is now open to supporting minimum wage hikes (the fact that their stores suck the life out of employees and customers because they don’t pay workers enough and work rules inure all the benefits to the company)

Damn you lawhawk…always with the making sense of things comments. I think sometimes people forget there are many political battles to wage, some you lose some you win. Getting new energy policy in place has been a hallmark of Obama.

So yeah, I can see him giving them credit for this deal. I can also see him getting some of the big Walmart honchos aside while he is there and saying, hey what about some of these other issues?

That is how politics works for a pragmatist/realist like Obama.

I think what is even worse than Walmart & McD’s paying their workers minimum wage, is their business model of hiring PART TIME workers but demanding a FULL TIME 24/7 rotation availability, making it impossible for them to work at a second job or attend school.
