Dave Brat’s Campaign Manager Scrubs Facebook Page of Extremist Comments After Election

Hiding the evidence

Would you be surprised to learn that Tea Party heartthrob Dave Brat’s campaign manager has a Facebook page with loony comments about abortion, racism, and links to extreme right wing websites?

Well, it did before yesterday, when he scrubbed it.

From comparing George Zimmerman’s shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin to abortion to calling for the abolition of the Food and Drug Administration and encouraging the adoption of the silver monetary standard, Zachary Werrell - one of just two paid staffers for the upstart campaign of Randolph-Macon College economics professor Brat - in 2012 and 2013 sought to build a public profile as a socially conservative libertarian voice. The Facebook postings were either taken down or made private overnight Tuesday in the wake of Brat’s win, but Yahoo News took screeshots of some of the remarks before they were removed from view. A cached version of Werrell’s page remained available on Google as of mid-Wednesday.

“Can someone who was outraged that George Zimmerman was found not guilty of ‘SOMETHING ANYTHING’ and who is simultaneously pro-choice explain the logical dissonance there? Ie. Why its not ok to kill someone who is banging your head into concrete but its ok to kill someone for simply existing who, through your conscious actions, you brought into the world?” Werrell had written in an Oct. 24, 2013 posting.

The month before, the campaign manager for the likely next congressman for Virginia’s 7th District - no Democrat has represented that district since 1971 - questioned whether existing state lines were defensible. “Should sections of States be allowed to secede from a State if they feel they are un/underrepresented in the State Government?” Werrell asked. “I say yes. I derive that opinion from our first foundational document - the Declaration of Independence. What say you?”

On Oct. 25, 2013, he called for an end to the regulation of prescription drugs, citing a story from the Ludwig von Mises Institute. “Abolish the FDA!” he wrote.

On Oct. 29 of that year, it was a piece by Fred Reed from Lew Rockwell’s website on “The Wussification of Boys” that set him off. “There is a war on boys!” Werrell wrote. “Rough housing, playing soldier, etc, are all punished or medicated away. And we wonder why there is gender inequality in the classroom and in college/attendance/graduation rates.”

The Reed piece called for the end of women teachers in co-ed or boys’ schools. “It is time to get women out of the schooling of boys,” wrote Fred Reed. “It is way past time. Women in our feminized classrooms are consigning generations of our sons to years of misery and diminished future.” The piece further argued that “women should not be allowed within fifty feet of a school where boys are taught” and that “Women are totalitarian. Men are happy to let boys be boys and girls be girls. Women want all children to be girls.”

But don’t worry! Dave Brat may be anti-gay, anti-immigrant, and anti-choice, but Vox Media’s Timothy Lee says he’s going to be fantastic for civil liberties because NSA.

More religious zealots over here:

This week, an Oklahoma magazine discovered that last summer, Tea Party state House candidate Scott Esk endorsed stoning gay people to death: “I think we would be totally in the right to do it,” he said in a Facebook post. Esk went on to add nuance to his position:

“That [stoning gay people to death] goes against some parts of libertarianism, I realize, and I’m largely libertarian, but ignoring as a nation things that are worthy of death is very remiss.”

So, Cantor, who was busy scheming to get the Speaker’s seat, couldn’t hold on to his own seat in a primary against a guy who’s just to the right of him - because Cantor wasn’t extreme enough. That’s even though Cantor and Brat have ||this much daylight between the two on pretty much everything.

Of course, now that Cantor’s internal polling was done by Unskewed Poll-guys, we know why he’s in the position he was, and that no one else thought there was an issue until after the results started flowing in.

What brought Cantor down? Hubris? Ego? Or that the guy who beat him was even more brazen and extreme than Cantor was?

It’s probably a mix of those, but how many warning signs should be going up when he’s getting his site scrubbed of anything that might resemble what we’ve come to expect from GOP positions - misogynist, racist, bat-crap crazy, and economically illiterate (which is particularly entertaining since he’s an economics professor and refuses to state a position on the minimum wage, which he’s all but indicated should be abolished, even though all the statistical evidence points to the minimum wage being a net positive for the economy and for workers’ rights.

Cantor can’t be on the ballot as an independent because the deadline for filling as an independent is close of business on primary day.

As for write-in, you can write-in anybody you want on (general) election day, but they only count write-ins if above a certain percentage (>10% I believe).

Which ignores the fact that opposition research exists. If the Brat campaign thinks that they can scrub everything they’re idiots. Someone on the Democratic side has been keeping records of every batshit thing he’s posted on FB, tweeted, written, and said. They’ve got videos and transcripts of all his interviews.

None of that guarantees a Democratic win, obviously. Cantor’s district is a solid red. But it doesn’t do Brat any favors, either.

What’s funny about Cantor’s campaign claims is that the GOP has in the past here in Va used conventions to nominate their candidates. It’s how we got E.W Jackson nominated for Lt. Governor and why Bill Bolling decided not to even bother running against Cuccinelli. And you know what, even if Dem voters did have a role in Cantor’s defeat. I doubt it given the low turnout and the fact that there really wasn’t much of an effort at all in Va Dem circles to poison the well so to speak, this is an open primary state. And what Cantor’s team refuses to admit is that there are a lot of reliable GOP voters who may not be actual registered Republicans but will vote GOP none the less.

Oh, look at who also has been scrubbing their Facebook page:

Joni Ernst condemns husband’s comments

A joke about shooting an ex and a reference to a female federal official as a “traitorous skank” remained on a Facebook page belonging to the husband of U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst for months.

Democratic operatives took screen shots of the comments made by Republican Gail Ernst and shared them with The Des Moines Register on Tuesday, a day after national news outlets reported that he called Hillary Clinton a “hag” in a Facebook post in May 2013.

Gail Ernst has since deleted all the inflammatory posts and apologized for them in a written statement to the Register on Tuesday.

His wife condemned the posts.

“I’m appalled by my husband’s remarks,” said Joni Ernst, a state senator from Red Oak who beat four other Republicans last week to become the GOP nominee for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat. “They are uncalled for and clearly inappropriate. I’ve addressed this issue with my husband, and that’s between us.”

[…]

Democratic operatives took screen shots last year; Gail Ernst switched privacy settings Monday.

[…]

We can now joke about Joni castrating her husband in all earnest.

… and that’s between us.” [eds. she said, holding his testicles in one hand and a knife in the other.]

If you ask me, it seems that Cantor was too focused on being Mr. National GOP/TP Suck-Up that he neglected his district at home. As Tip O’Neill all politics is local. They’re saying that his constituent services were among the worst in the state which if Cantor were as smart as he liked to act would have been fixed if Cantor ever had his ambition on higher office like Speaker. Even a bigoted ass like Jesse Helms realized how important constituent services were as a means of forging voter loyalty.

Okay time to fess up. that was the NSA last Friday.

In a remarkable legal filing on Friday afternoon, the NSA told a federal court that its spying operations are too massive and technically complex to comply with an order to preserve evidence. Fact of the matter is there is a part of the South that really hasn’t changed much since the Civil Rights movement. I say this as a Virginian who has heard some uh let’s say very fucked up shit about racial minorities by Southern whites when they think they’re in the comfort of sympathetic ears. I knew Justice Roberts had never really tried to look at the South at all when he claimed that the VRA was “punishment” and “discrimination” against the South for past ways. The fact of the matter is while segregation died here, a lot of the bigoted spirit behind Jim Crow never left us. It’s been that spirit that has made up many Southern GOP affiliates for years now. It’s how Jesse Helms never had to worry about being called out on his bigoted bullshit. It’s how Rand Paul can say he would have opposed the CRA of ‘64 and still get nominated. It’s how George Allen gets to slur an Indian American and get a second chance by GOP voters for the U.S Senate. It’s how an open Neo-Confederate like Chris McDaniel could end up being the Republican nominee for Senate in Mississippi. The South isn’t what it once was thankfully but a lot of that does have to do with Northern transplants.

Sounds like the ‘military’ was more interested in paychecks than doing their jobs, which if the numbers are accurate, would have indicated that the security forces would have been able to smother this nonsense pretty quickly and effectively with even a modest amount of effort. Instead, they tucked tail and ran, and have left open the barn door to allowing this group to glad hand all the military treats they’ve left behind.

The French were simply outmanuevered in WWII for a variety of reasons, including a failure of political leadership.

I will criticize Petain for besmirching France by choosing collaboration with the Nazis; a dark chapter in France’s history, to be sure.

But I would never criticize the average French soldier. They fought for the country and their freedom, and though they lost that temporarily, it doesn’t minimize their effort.

Which is really the responsible thing to do. There are plenty of ways to deter burglars—lights, noise (both, esp when you’re away), a dog who will bark. Thieves want darkness and quiet. Also, decent locks on windows and doors. Just sensible stuff. I was lucky that my son who worked installing the systems put them in the 2 houses I had in Charlotte. Sometimes, just having the “security” decals on windows and doors is helpful, also.

I haven’t suffered a burglary in 73 yrs.

So in the end, the “professional” force that we spent zillions training and equipping melts away just as quickly as the Soviet-armed Ba’athist force did when facing us in 1991. Of course, we had Abrams tanks and A-10s and B-52s in 1991. That would scare the shit out of any soldier. What the hell does ISIS have, beyond some RPGs and Toyota pickups?

And you know what will happen next: it will be up to Shi’a death squads to stand and fight, and this will degenerate into a battle between the most fanatical, homicidal elements of both Sunni and Shi’a. Suicide bombings and beheadings all around! Wheeeeee!!!!

“House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s surprising loss to a tea party activist in Tuesday night’s Virginia primary also rattled investors, with some wondering if it heralded the return of gridlock on Capitol Hill.

The Real Republicans…the money men…will not be liking this development. As some said earlier around here today…the money from those money men will not be as readily available.

But then again, they seem to be wasting it on politics anyway. So, that leads me to believe even they are running around today wandering what the Tea Party has done and what they are going to be doing about it.

By the way, has anyone talked to Republican ‘Bag Man’ Dick Armey about the Tea Party taking down Cantor and creating all kinds of hell for the party? He was the guy that drummed up funding to buy the Tea Party astroturf. Or, like many a bag men, has he come up missing?

Iraq Army Capitulates to Isis Militants in Four Cities

Mission accomplished.

Mission accomplished indeed.

What annoys me is that Iraq had an experienced, battle hardened army that was disbanded in 2003, when Paul Bremer was essentially serving as Iraq’s head of state. I remember hearing an American military officer on TV talk about what a wrong decision that was. He basically said (and I’m paraphrasing from memory), “What would I do? I’m a career military guy. What if I was just suddenly kicked out, no more Army, unemployed, no way to take care of my family, no other skills—what would I do if someone came and offered me $$ to fight as an insurgent? Would I take it? Hell yeah I would! I have a family to take care of and all my other options have been taken away. I’d do whatever I needed to do to survive.”

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to how many of the old army guys are either among the ISIS fighters or are assisting by sharing their expertise? //

From the NY Times in 2008, five years into the war:

Fateful Choice on Iraq Army Bypassed Debate

BAGHDAD — When President Bush convened a meeting of his National Security Council on May 22, 2003, his special envoy in Iraq made a statement that caught many of the participants by surprise. In a video presentation from Baghdad, L. Paul Bremer III informed the president and his aides that he was about to issue an order formally dissolving Iraq’s Army. The account that emerges from those interviews, and from access to previously unpublished documents, makes clear that Mr. Bremer’s decree reversed an earlier plan — one that would have relied on the Iraqi military to help secure and rebuild the country, and had been approved at a White House meeting that Mr. Bush convened just 10 weeks earlier. […]

The interviews show that while Mr. Bush endorsed Mr. Bremer’s plan in the May 22 meeting, the decision was made without thorough consultations within government, and without the counsel of the secretary of state or the senior American commander in Iraq, said the commander, Lt. Gen. David D. McKiernan. The decree by Mr. Bremer, who is known as Jerry, prompted bitter infighting within the government and the military, with recriminations continuing to this day.

Colin L. Powell, the secretary of state and a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he was never asked for advice, and was in Paris when the May 22 meeting was held.

Mr. Powell, who views the decree as a major blunder, later asked Condoleezza Rice, who was serving as Mr. Bush’s national security adviser, for an explanation.

“I talked to Rice and said, ‘Condi, what happened?’ ” he recalled. “And her reaction was: ‘I was surprised too, but it is a decision that has been made and the president is standing behind Jerry’s decision. Jerry is the guy on the ground.’ And there was no further debate about it.” […]
