We had a homeowner in Pico Rivera killed by “friendly fire” earlier this month and a female bank teller hostage killed by “friendly fire” last spring.
BTW, when did it become acceptable for police to promiscuously fire with handguns at a car with a confirmed hostage inside?? I take it that backing off and waiting for the negotiator is just too 1988?

(CNN) — A 9-year-old girl learning to fire a submachine gun accidentally killed her instructor at a shooting range when the weapon recoiled over her shoulder, according to Arizona authorities.
The instructor, 39-year-old Charles Vacca, died at a hospital Monday night after he was shot in the head.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said the girl was with her parents. The three reside in New Jersey. The website of Bullets and Burgers, the shooting range where the accident happened, says children between the ages of 8 and 17 can shoot a weapon if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Police Arrest, Mock Disabled Woman For Having Bloodshot Eyes
When the police called her father, Steve Olsen, to inform him of her arrest, he also told them that she had a disability. Their only response was to tell him that he could pick her up in six to eight hours.
“It’s like arresting a 5-year-old kid,” Steve Olsen said. “If the guy could not figure out that she has disabilities he is just an idiot. This one is so obvious.”
Olsen tested negative for her drug test. Her father says she’s never even taken a sip of alcohol before, let alone used drugs.
“I’m a retired fire captain and this is just the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” her father said. “I am a total supporter of law enforcement, but this was wrong. This was out of control.”

Interesting bit from that article:
This is just another example of the police not understanding how to deal with people with disabilities. In many cases, their lack of training and empathy is fatal, because they assume that anyone resisting them has full mental capacity and immediately respond with violence. In fact, a 2012 study shows that about half of the people shot and killed by police are mentally ill. In many of these cases, police officers knew that the “subjects were unstable,” but went ahead and pulled the trigger.

Last I checked, most cops are trained to shoot for center mass, as that is the largest target and generally the easiest to hit. There is really no place on the human body that can be shot that won’t give arise to complications.

On the guy with sprinkler case I mentioned:
SANTA ANA — After a day of deliberations, a jury Thursday found Long Beach police officers violated the civil rights of a man who was shot and killed without warning in 2010, awarding his family $6.5 million in damages.
Officers Jeffrey Shurtleff and Victor Ortiz were found liable in the death of Douglas Zerby, 35, who was killed without warning as he sat on the stoop of a friend’s apartment playing with a pistol-grip hose nozzle that police mistook for a gun.
In a unanimous verdict in federal civil court, the jury of women and two men found not only that the officers violated Zerby’s 4th Amendment Constitutional rights, but that they committed a battery on Zerby and were negligent.
Attorneys for the Zerby family had asked for $21.5 million in damages, and received about a third of that. Zerby’s son, River, was awarded $3.5 million, his father, Mark, $2 million, and his mother, Pam Amici, $1 million.
Brian Claypool, an attorney who has been with the Zerby family from the outset, saw large implications in the verdict, saying it was much bigger than Zerby.
“This to me is a public confirmation of the fact that the Long Beach Police Department was unjustified, reckless and careless in failing to give Doug a command,” Claypool said. “The use of deadly force was categorically excessive, unjust and unreasonable. “
Claypool said from the beginning the case resonated with him because Zerby could have been anyone. He had not committed a crime, was unarmed, was never a threat to anyone and was killed probably without ever knowing he was being watched.

All three of my stepkids are/were FAS children. I raised them from the ages of 12-14 (and after the first month, I called my mother and apologized for every single “bad” thing I had done in my life up to that point).
The oldest died six years ago at age 47 from brain cancer, she had the major behavioral issues that are sometimes associated with FAS. The youngest had minor behavioral issues, which were effectively dealt with by enlisting in the USAF, which provided a highly structured environment and he thrived there during the course of his more than 20-year military career (he retired as a TSgt). The middle child had no behavioral issues, but got the physical abnormalities, which are now full-blown life-threatening at the age of 52.
Interacting with some people with disabilities can be a challenge on any given day for many people. Police really need better training.

I don’t care if someone wants to teach their kids to shoot at a young age. My cousins learned to shoot when they were young so they could go hunting. I learned a little bit at that age too. But it was done with the fact that we were kids in mind. We weren’t handed Uzis.

Saudi Arabia must recognize that it will eventually become the primary target of ISIS. It controls the most holy sites of Islam, and by its adherence to, promotion and export of extremist interpretations of Islam, Saudi Arabia is uniquely vulnerable to the ISIS’s moral suasion.
Massive purchases of Western arms will help only if the Saudi armed forces and populace remain loyal to the Saudi government. For Saudi Arabia, this time, there’s no safety in underwriting the services of others from outside the region. Ultimately, it will have to be the Saudi people themselves, their ruling family and their clergy who rally to defeat the threat of ISIS.

This is one of my biggest nightmares. My son is autistic, what if he can’t look a cop in the eye or gets scared and shuts down or runs? He has long hair and looks like a stoner (though he’s not) he could be stopped just on appearances.
The changes in how policing is done has happened gradually and right under our noses. I’m not sure how to fix it, but something needs to change and quickly. The cops are acting like anyone who’s not a cop is an enemy, that’s the root of this madness.
And bless you for raising those kids up to adulthood, it’s the work of angels, seriously. Sorry for your losses too, I’m glad they had you as a mom.

Yeah, imagine that, just treat anyone, disabled or not like a human being. What a novel concept. I think some of what we’ve been seeing with the cops is just the symptom of a much larger cultural/societal problem. A lack of empathy and a complete disregard for anything that you personally don’t experience directly. Poor people are poor because they’re lazy, everyone has the same opportunities. Minorities need to assimilate better, then no one would bother them and racism would go away. If you’re sick and aren’t insured well, you should have been saving up for such an emergency. The list is endless and it’s not getting any better.

All you need to hear is that woman on Fox say it is not fair to describe Mike Brown as an unarmed teenager.
Because what should be said is he was big and black and deserved to be shot?!?!?!?!
Like all the other big and black teens that lack good manners. ?!?!?!?!
How do these people’s brains work that they can’t hear the unabashed racism in their own sentences.
It really does tell you all you need to know about FOX that they’re upset that the truth is being presented. It bears repeating that Ailes did get his start working for Nixon when Nixon perfected the Southern Strategy and was H.W Bush’s top strategist when the Willie Horton ad was pushed. It’s not a surprise at all that race baiting is part of the culture at FNC.

OK, I was looking at this first photo this morning. I don’t know the first thing about how ejection seats work, but I had noticed a very thin smoke line off to the left of the main plume. I enlarged the picture and it goes all the way to the ground. Could that be it?

Seems legit:
ATLANTA—During a press event at Arby’s headquarters last week, the company officially launched its new $2.99 Grab-N-Go Meal Deal, which allows patrons to go behind the counter at any franchise location and grab as much roast beef as they can with their bare hands.
“We’re thrilled to announce an exciting new dining option that lets customers step right into our kitchen and dig hands-first into our famous slow-roasted beef,” spokesman Gavin Milne said while standing in front of a cardboard cutout that depicted Oven Mitt—the Arby’s mascot—cupping a steaming mound of beef slices. “As soon as we ring up your transaction, you have 15 seconds to grab all the meat you can carry, and however much you manage to bring back across the counter is yours to eat—all for under $3! Who could resist?”
…
“Letting people sprint around the counter and take as much roast beef as they are physically able to pick up was really the next logical step in our business model,” CEO Hala Moddelmog said. “We’ve found most Arby’s customers would rather not hassle with vegetables, buns, or trays. They just want beef, and they want it fast, fresh, and wadded up in their mouths.
…
“I’ve come here every day since they started this,” said Kansas City customer Roy Arnold, 41, as he enjoyed two dripping handfuls of roast beef while standing over one of the numerous garbage cans that have replaced tables at most Arby’s locations. “After a few times through, you really get the hang of how to use your chin and hands together to keep a big mound from falling over.”/blockquote>

Freaking gun nuts, I swear. If you were really a non crazy responsible gun owner you’d have no problem with proper testing, licensing and background checks. It’s harder to get and drive a car than it is to own and operate a gun. I don’t hear anyone bitching about what you have to do to drive, ever. All the way to the horizon.
Odds are the F15 pilot ejected a good ways off from the crash itself. If he had engine trouble he’d probably have ejected and the plane then went into a ballistic trajectory from there, could have covered several miles from the punch out point.

Yeah I’ve come to loathe it too. Since I’ve lost weight and stopped eating it as much. I’ve wondered what the hell I was doing to my body. It’s tough though since fast food is so cheap and quick. My favorite place to eat in D.C while I was working there though was a Mediterranean place in the style of Chipolte. Draw an imaginary line normal / perpendicular to the horizon. You’ll see that the smoke from the crash drifts left to right, indicating a breeze. A left to right wind motion would deflect the contrail similarly if it extends to higher altitudes, so that the older portions are moved progressively further rightward, creating an apparent curve.

When my stepmother was here, she lamented the lack of chain restaurants.
On the other hand, we have great New Mexican food here, but that’s ALL we have. No Italian, no Thai, no Greek, no Korean, no Japanese, the Chinese options are deadly… There is a place that does German food once a week.
Up through the cold War, living near Army bases always assured great foreign restaurants. Ft. Rucker AL had two very good German places and several Korean and Thai. No one seems to be bringing brides or food home from SWA.

I’ve said it here before but what I’ve loved about where I’ve lived is the variety. But your point about your stepmother reminds me of a joke my Dad has about my grandmother and it’s that she considers Olive Garden ethnic. There’s an inverse square law relating restaurant quality in California from the distance to San Francisco. There’s a brief pick up around LA but it’s pretty much all in food truck form and super expensive yuppie hellholes. The mission towns usually have a couple really good local hole in the wall Mexican places, but the other options are hit and miss at best. It’s fucked up.

Think debtors’ prisons are a thing of the past? Think again.
The Expanding World of Poverty Capitalism
“Poverty capitalism and government policy are now working on their own and in tandem to shift costs to those least equipped to pay and in particular to the least politically influential segment of the poor: criminal defendants and those delinquent in paying fines.
“Last year, Ferguson, Mo., the site of recent protests over the shooting of Michael Brown, used escalating municipal court fines to pay 20.2 percent of the city’s $12.75 million budget. Just two years earlier, municipal court fines had accounted for only 12.3 percent of the city’s revenues.
“What should be done to interrupt the dangerous feedback loop between low-level crime and extortionate punishment? First, local governments should bring private sector collection charges, court-imposed administrative fees and the dollar amount of traffic fines (which often double and triple when they go unpaid) into line with the economic resources of poor offenders. But larger reforms are needed and those will not come about unless the poor begin to exercise their latent political power. In many ways, everything is working against them. But the public outpouring spurred by the shooting of Michael Brown provides an indication of a possible path to the future. It was, after all, just 50 years ago — not too distant in historical terms — that collective action and social solidarity produced tangible results.”

I feel ya. The good news around here is that more and more restaurants are following the lead of the smaller pubs and going in for good micros and imports on tap. Long Island in general is in the midst of a restaurant boom, with lots of new places with really creative chefs.

When I went to pick up the munchkin from his pre-K class at the daycare today, I noticed there was quite a diversity of kids in the class, which made my spirits rise. He was napping, worn out by his first day (and not the only one).
The classes have 18 kids in each, this facility runs 2 pre-K classes, and I think the teachers who run it should be making at least $1800/wk, $100 for each child. But, of course, daycare workers get some of the worst pay out there, paid little for assuming responsibility for all that human potential.

I used to do that job. It’s not at all easy and certainly underpaid, usually with no health insurance or paid leave/vacation of any kind. I’ll never get why people object to teachers of any age class being paid good money. And then in the next breath many of those same people talk about their “family values”.

Teachers and daycare workers should be one of the better paid professions out there, in my opinion.

Guns are not supposed to be ‘fun’.
Ok, as someone who used to hunt and used to shoot (in a sandpit in near my house in the middle of nowhere and now at a gun range on occasion) shooting and guns are fun. HOWEVER handling them comes with big responsibility.

Exclusive: GM moving some production between Mexico and Tennessee http://t.co/0N7D1cXOec
— Reuters Top News (@Reuters) August 27, 2014
(Reuters) - General Motors Co is shifting some production of the Cadillac SRX from Mexico to Tennessee, but will partly offset that by moving some Chevrolet Equinox manufacturing from Tennessee to Mexico, an industry source told Reuters.

A GM spokesman said the production changes at Spring Hill likely would result in the creation of more U.S. jobs but declined to say how many.

Mike McFadden commercial (running against Al Franken for MN Senator): “Al Franken cast the deciding vote for Obamacare.” He says that like it’s a bad thing! MN’s health care exchange was relatively well received; I don’t think that line is going to have the desired effect. Talk about tone deaf.

Well, we enjoyed our anniversary dinner at the new steak house in town. I hope it stays open. Sadly, kosher restaurants tend to not flourish in Detroit. It’s said that we are cheapskates & shitty tippers, but I think it has more to do with the fact that we get no tourists, unlike Chicago, LA, New York, Miami & Toronto.
There was a party (middle aged couple treating their 175-year-old mom) at the other table SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS. We got to “enjoy” every word of their conversation and learned all about Noranne & Daniel’s trip to Israel & they are planning on visiting China for their next vacation, and Al’s son’s Bar Mitzvah in Chicago. Maybe Mom is hard of hearing so they have to shout when she’s with them.
People at least had the sense to not SCREAM AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS on their cell phones, because this was a classy joint.
But, Noranne & Dan & your mom: you suck.

I was out at Death Valley a few years back, and rented a 4x4 to do the off-road trip to Racetrack Playa. Photos don’t ever do it justice. It was amazing. You see these rocks sitting there, and you just wonder how did they ever move with the trails that stretch on for hundreds of feet. Not small ones - the big rocks.
Half the fun was just getting there - the rest was enjoying the near solitude and desolate beauty of the place.
